First of all: WHAAAT?? You're a grandma? You look so young!!! I'm so happy I found this video from you! I totally missed it when you posted it! I made sunscreen with tallow from a different YT creator before, but it turned out to be not really usable because the white cast was there for hours and it was so thick that you are not even able to really work it into your skin. I am super excited to try your recipe!
Born and raised in Arizona, so I am "tan" but, I have to try this for my soon to be daughter in-law who also born and raised in AZ but is red head with extremely light skin tone. I told her one day I was going to make her some sun block lotion! Thank you for sharing Ellen, many blessings!
If you put a little more beeswax in a sunscreen product it will make it waterproof if you are going swimming and will also will last longer if you are sweating outside. Thank you for all the SPF properties of different oils. Can't wait to play around with them.
Everything is a controversy when it's on the internet. Thank you for the disclaimer. I spoke to my physician and she stated the same thing. She recommended some sun but not at midday for Vitamin D production .
Hi! Just had a quick question what would be a good starting point to make a spf type lip balm? How much zinc should I start with? Thank you sharing all you do💜
Thank you so much for this recipe! I've wanted something safe for my littles. I'll be making this ASAP! I've been looking up different recipes on how to make this. One lady I seen, added a pink clay to help with the white cast which I thought was a neat idea. Again, you're always fabulous!
You are awesome Ellen.i lrarn soooo much from you.noe all my skin care products are made by me thanks to you. God bless your generosity in sharing your formulations❤❤❤
Hi again! So I tried your recipe but my melted beeswax immediately created tiny clumps when I added it to the room temperature tallow/oil mix. … any tips to avoid this in a cold processed cream recipe? Thanks for your help! ❤
Hi Ellen, nice video. I recently just purchased beef tallow from the Fat Lady and it’s fabulous. I have heard great things about this being a good moisturizer and other properties. Have you ever made a face cream with your beef tallow?
I will definitely make this for my babies. But also, I’ve commented before about how great your skin looks. Maybe one video or a series you could show us your products you use…with recipes 😊
Awesome! Fair hair and skin, along with red headed hubby and toddler. Commercial stuff just doesnt cut it. We basically have to use pure zinc oxide. I will be trying this out. Side note: Ellen, could you please show what your soap curing area looks like? Love your soap videos and starting it out myself, but wondering how much ventilation you need in your curing area.
Great suggestion. I use perforated baking sheets lined with parchment, on a wire rack for curing. As long as air can circulate around the bars, they're good.
@@EllenRuthSoapHi, Ellen! I've made this recipe twice now and I get a lot of beeswax chunks. What am I doing wrong? The first time I melted the wax in the microwave. It solidified almost immediately when I started mixing (I thought maybe I got the wax too hot). Second time I allowed the tallow, coconut oil, and liquid oils to come to room temp (75) while I melted the beeswax in a water bath on the stove. It took a little longer for chunking, but I still got pieces of beeswax. How did you get yours so creamy?
Hi Ellen. Thank you for the recipe. I tried it today and it was not as easy as you make it seem. Firstly, when I added my hot wax into the cold oils, the wax turned solid and lumpy straight away. I couldnt mix it using the electric mixer. So I had to put the bowl into the microwave for 30 seconds. This then resulted in an oily runny mixture which took ages to cool and start to solidify. Then I added the zinc oxide. Creamy and now very thick, so thought I better add a little more avocado oil, about 10ml. Put my cream into aluminium tins because I expect the lotion to remain very thick. Tried some and its really lovely but does leave a slight white cast. So what I wanted to know is how did you prevent your wax from going solid when impacting the cold oils? Why is yours more liquidy? Is it ok to add some oil at a later stage and beat into mixture? To avoid white cast should I use less zinc oxide? First time making sunscreen lol
It's okay to warm all the oils so that the wax blends smoothly, then cool the whole thing. And you can adjust the zinc oxide and liquid oils as needed.
Thanks again for a GREAT & IMFORMATIVE video. You did great job talking about not making SPF claims. I will try this and may send it with my husband next year when he flies to the Oshkosh fly-in. You are rhe best. I may use lard since I have a great person to get it from. Bless you! 😊❤
In Cuba we take the babies outside at 9:00 am to the sun. You will see all the mamas hinging there and getting sun themselves d the babies. We need sun for vit D mainly but not only. Everything is with moderation. Personally I walk everyday in the morning around 5:30 am since it’s to hot here in AZ and use sun block, sometimes just some of the oils that have good level of protection specially for my face along with my face tallow cream( don’t like sunscreen for my face, idk why. Anyhow Ellen, great video and wonderful recipe. I am going to try it just with other oils. You know I love tallow all the way.
Hi Ellen. I really like your videos. I have a question, would the percentage of lard be the same as the tallow? I've never used either, but it seems like lard is a little softer than tallow. Thanks.
Very nice:) love tallow! I made a whipped slave with rose hip oil and use it on my face at night a few times a week:) Did you test this out in the sun? I’m curious 🧐 I’d be willing to make it for my grandbabies🥰
@@EllenRuthSoap A tip for you, the shrink wrap bands, I cut mine in half the long way. I found too often on my jars that there’s a lot of wasted shrink band so when you cut it in half the long way you end up with two bands versus just one!
I have a link for a good source of tallow in the description box 😉. For the butters as a replacement, I suggest trying a small test batch and see how you like it ☀️
@EllenRuthSoap Thanks so much! I've had some non-nano zinc oxide for a while, your video is giving me the confidence to give it a try! Thx for the link!!💜

I think it’s more controversial that you used tallow/fat in a sunblock, people used to lather themselves in animal fats, tallow/lard and or vegetable oils to promote tanning cause the oil makes you burn and the tan you build is your bodies way of protecting itself by turning darker….. 🤔

Yes, a face cream with tallow
Hi❤❤ love lobe your videos. Just wanted to confirm, I am a bit confused, the 20% zinc oxide, is it the 20% of the total volume of the oils or water?
I do my % off the total volume, water and oils.

Good Morning, do you render your own beef fat into tallow? If so would you please do a video on your process? Thank you so much.
Yes I do, and that's a great suggestion for a video☀️
Ellen if I wanted to use the carrot oil would I substitute it for one of the oils?
Yes, that would be part of or all of your liquid oil portion☀️
Ps: I don’t understand why but it doesn’t leave a white cast on my arms but for some weird reasons, I always get one on my face. 🤷🏽♀️
If you up the amount of tallow and coconut oil, would you decrease the other oils?
You could increase them and keep the rest, it would be a bit thicker finish.
Hi Ellen. I really like your videos. I have a question, would the percentage of lard be the same as the tallow? I've never used either, but it seems like lard is a little softer than tallow. Thanks.
