How about 4WD 24-7 challenge any hybrid/EV 4x4 manufacturer to put one of their so called "capable" vehicles through the $1000 track or do the Tele track at the start of the season. That would be a true test of their product.

If they took those “allegedly capable” vehicles down to the $1000 track i reckon the first bog hole would probably put them out of action. They would need a lot of aftermarket accessories fitted to them to attempt that track that’s for sure.

No doubt the VK56 is a great engine, very very durable. But it has variable valve timing, high pressure direct injection etc....10 years ago everyone was saying it was a soft roader and would not last, independent suspension all round...ten years on and they are up the Cape over the Simpson and all over, nuff said. Australia is not he only harsh environment in the world. The Patrol is a legend in the middle east and much like the Y62, the Y63 will have had extensive development time in these areas and conditions. The middle east is a massive market compared to Australia and they will not jeopardise that. And can you buy a Landcruiser a Turbo? Cannot see anyone whining about the twin turbos under a 200 or 300 series, why whine about this? It will be tough, but you wont see it for while, at least in OZ

    I’m gonna speak for both the Y63 and the ranger hybrid here;
This unfortunately involves a lot of government legislation and even if you don’t buy it new legislations will come that will force every person to buy them, that be either continuing to up the cost of owning non hybrid/ thirsty engines, or at worst making them illegal. The fact that Nissan didn’t make it hybrid really shows they don’t want to go down that path and holding off on their 4wds as much as they can on the regulations and emissions side of it. This is where the people need to band together and really push the government back from making such attempts.
Now it may sound like I’m all negative here but personally a hybrid 4wd is still better than a Cybertruck any day of the week they have there place in our society and roads, just not in our hard 4wding society (both tracking and touring). What we must stand against is them making what we drive already more difficult or illegal to own and drive, heck start getting our beloved rigs onto club plates to make sure it can still be driven at all.

  • @JamesSmullins

It's happening in the states too. Going with smaller engines then putting turbos on them which just increases failure points and maintenance costs go up. Or the EV itself could just SELF Extinguish the fire. The latest batteries are designed with fire resistant foam or putty between the cells. Then also far Less PLASTIC is used now mainly changing to metal or ceramic sheets for packaging. You end up having a battery that will self extinguish in many cases of fire, leaving HALF burnt battery pack. Who'd a thunk you could design a battery with less fire risk.

Honestly designers nowadays should be taking notes from engines like the legendary 1HD-FTE, big displacement, capable of big power but detuned for longevity!
And that ties into the whole V8 thing, the old Cruisers (like the 80 and 100/105) and Patrols (GQ/GU with the TD42) with Inline 6's are awesome so I don't see how going to a V6 is a disadvantage, least they didn't do a 70 and go to a 4 cylinder tbh

The question regarding splicing tickled my interest as someone that has spliced this type of rope for over 15years In my career. Hot tip from me is never tie a knot in this type of rope it actually weakens it dramatically. It must be hitched or spliced 😊 the technique Jessie uses, I don’t wanna say wrong but it’s not the correct way. And funny thing is most winch ropes come that way.
U need a bremil lock and a tapered berry. Doesn’t take much longer but the strength of the splice is considerably stronger this way.
Hope this helps big love guys!

Electric vehicles are the future and what we are seeing these days in the current offerings isn’t the answer. But this same evolution happened the same way when we went from the horse and cart to the petrol vehicle. Cars weren’t just instantly the better option. They were a novelty at first and as the technology got better and cars slowly over took the cart and became the norm. The power capable of electric motors is insane compared to what a combustion engine. If and when we came establish a better storage source of more efficient way to create electricity then you’ll see Ev take over.

With Jessy now driving a BMW powered Patrol, has he also thought to adopt proper BMW driving habits?
As for EV/hybrids, even just in general, not specifically 4wd, I'm quite on the fence about them. If I would be forced to go for fomething like that, I would go with a Hybrid that charges off the on-board petrol engine. Partly because just like with a normal ICE vehicle 5-10 minutes at the pump when it's low on go-go juice, and you've got full range again.
And partly because of the (perceived?) reasurance that if either motor goes cactus, if something still works, you could potentially still limp it to a mechanic.
And if it's just for on road use, I think a vehicle that alternates between the electric and petrol motors depending on battery charge/power needed/... can be acceptable.
Dad's got a Toyota C-HR hybrid like that since two years, Says if not treated too harsh, he can get 4-liters per 100 out of it on the highway. And that's not holding back on speed. Just consistent driving.
And as the time is coming closer when he'll be able to retire, he's thinking about getting rid of one of our vehicles when it's time. And he already said if he has to pick between the Yota and mom's Peugeot 2008 with just ICE, most likely the Yota is staying.
Only thing that's been wrong with it so far was a rattle in the driver's door, that even the mechanic couldn't find what it was, or why it eventually went away, despite driving the car extensively for a day.
