Europe: Timeline of National Flags: 1 AD - 1000

- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2019
- See a millennium of European history from the rise of Rome to the year 1000 A.D. with flags. Also see the rise and fall of many other empires such as the Romans, Bulgarians, Franks, Avars, and the Byzantines. While seeing many other kingdoms such as the Germanic kingdoms,
and many others.
A few notes:
Some flags such as the Frankish Flag, Lombard Flag, Visigothic Flag, Odoacer's flag, Kingdom of Italy's flag, Byzantine flag, (610) etc. are my educated guesses based on symbolism from that era.
The black, and white standards are standards used by the Islamic Caliphates, and many other Islamic emirates, and empires. So in 756, the Umayyad Caliphate isn't restricted to stay in Spain, it splits and becomes the Emirate of Cordoba. The Fihrids in northern Africa was conquered by the Abbasid Caliphate, but later they split and became the Aghlabids. In the 900s, the white flag in Africa isn't the caliphate of Cordoba conquering the area, that is supposed to be the Fatimid Caliphate.
The Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish Kingdoms are represented with their royal standards.
The concept of a national flag didn't exist back then, these flags were often symbols of the ruling dynasty of a certain kingdom or empire.
The states of the Holy Roman Empire is shown with the imperial standard.
Thank you if you read this.

It would be East Francia/Germany at that time. The imperial title went from one Carolingian ruler to another. So at times either France or Italy could have been called "Holy Roman Empire" technically
Hi. I'm your 10,000th Subscriber
14:45 Interesting choice of the Rus' Lion as the flag of Kyivan Rus'. I suppose I understand why you may have picked it, as it was the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Rus'. I would have sooner picked, say, the Tryzub or Trident, as that has evidence of usage since at least the reign of Volodymyr the Great. The Rus' Lion, if I remember correctly, was only adopted around the time of either Danylo the Great of Halych-Volhynia and the Kingdom of Rus' or his grandson Yuriy I. I am not totally confident about that, but if anyone has any better sources, feel free to point me in the right direction :)
its was not Kievan Rus. It was simply called Rus.
@@yonzerYY That is very true. Only in our more modern secondary sources is it called «Kyivan Rus'»

Great video
Golden Lion on the Blue Field was not a flag of Kievan Rus but, specifically, the Galicia-Volhynia Kingdom that existed in the 13-14th centuries.
Yup, Kievan Rus flag it was an ornament of Rurik's dinasty.
the video starts wrong because the Dacian kingdom (dacians) already had a flag which u didnt mention it in the video
their first flag was the dacian draco (which later on it became their emblem) and after burebista united all dacian tribes into one,
their flag changed into 3 big circles and 3 smaller circles on yellow background
the dacian flag is even displayed in games like Rome total war and you can find it in many historical sources

In 1008, Gurgen died, and Bagrat succeeded him as "King of the Iberians", thus becoming the first King of a unified realm of Abkhazia - and Iberia. (Georgia) After he had secured his patrimony, Bagrat proceeded’ to press a claim to the eastern oso Georgian kingdom of Kakheti-Hereti. and annexed it in or around 1010, after two years of fighting and... aggressive diplomacy. Anxious to create more stable’ and centralized monarchy, Bagrat eliminated or at least diminished the autonomy of the dynastic princes. In his eyes, the most possible internal danger.
