    Hi Claire, lovely video as usual! I’m in the UK and have planted my courgettes and beans outside already, so hope it’s not too early. My toms are screaming to get out of their pots too, I think they’ll get up and leave if I don’t plant them very soon. Take care and stay safe.

      I've looked at the weather forecast where I live and the night time temperatures look good, so I think I will plant mine out later this week, got a few other things to do first. If you are due a cold night, cover with fleece or bubble wrap. Take care xx

    I have very limited indoor/covered space, so I think I might be 2 weeks ahead. I watch for frosts, and did fleece various bits the other week. Unfortunately the last 3 days have seen 50+mph winds. Snapped my tomatoes, shook the flowers off the blueberries and strawberries, sent all the leaves on the sunflowers black. I am beyond gutted. I think the raspberries were a little more resilient. The dwarf apple and pear trees (in pots), don't look happy either. Some leaves are wrinkly and black. Managed to bring in everything else as they weren't planted out or were small enough to come inside the house. Grrrrrr. Wouldn't mind, but we didn't get any rain to make up for it. 😟

    • @clairesallotment
      @clairesallotment  4 года назад

      Oh no, that's terrible. Wind can do so much damage. The plants will recover, but if the main growing tip of your tomatoes has gone, then you could have a problem. You could always see if a side shoot appears and then train that as the main stem. Maybe someone near you has a few plants they can spare. I'd give you some of mine, but I don't think they'd post well.

    This is so helpful! As a beginner the bit I struggle with is spacing, I love your technique of using the trowel! Thanks 😁

    • @clairesallotment
      @clairesallotment  4 года назад

      You can space them a little further apart if you like. Books tell you to space them way apart, but who has that amount of space to waste. It's always worked for me doing it this way, so I stick with it. Others have a different point of view, but that's fine with me. If we were all the same, it would be boring xx

    Hi Clare. Thanks for another very interesting video. Love the show. Just a word of caution on the use of grey water and washing machine water. I was always advised only to use 'grey' water on non-edible plants for health reasons. Could I gently suggest a little research? Don't want anyone to have an upset tummy! Looking forward to your next show. Take care.

    • @clairesallotment

      When I was little and living at home, there was a really hot summer in the mid 80s, ended with an enormous thunder storm. We had a hosepipe ban, and my parents used all the washing machine and bath water on the garden, veggies included and we were all fine. They now live in Spain, and still do the same as they're not on the mains water and have to get water delivered, so they have to conserve as much water as possible. As long as you use your own grey water, and not neighbours' grey water then you are fine. They're your germs, so your body can cope. Ok don't use the water if someone has had a nasty virus, like chicken pox, flu, or Covid etc, but otherwise there shouldn't be a problem. I've been doing that for years and we've all be fine. I've got a sensitive tum tum, and if anyone will suffer it's me. If you don't wish to use it on your veggies, then don't. Advice changes all the time. Root veggies have been in the soil, and you're going to wash it before you eat it anyway.

      @@clairesallotment Thanks for your reply, Clare, but I'll continue to only use my grey water on my 'non-edibles' and follow the scientific advice and we'll agree to differ but I'll continue to enjoy your channel. :)

    Claire, wow, it sure looks extremely dry there. It's a bit dry here as well. We are not getting the Spring time rains that come in April and May. I have set out the tomatoes, peppers, and many flowers. I'm planting cucumbers, sweet corn and squash in a few days. I have the steel wire fence up around the sweet corn and am ready to string the electric fence. It's the only way I'm able to keep out the critters. My garden is a come back garden this year from a couple years of neglect. So far it's going fairly well. I'm not going to be able to bring back the entire garden this year but I'll keep chipping away at it. Hopefully, in a couple more years it will be back in full production.
    Have a great day in the garden.

      We've not had any decent rain in the SE of the UK for quite some time, and some of the plants are struggling a little. Using the bath and washing machine water is a start, but it's not enough, so I still have to water some bits with the hose. I'm very conscious about using water as we're on a metre. Sounds like you're keeping busy on your plot. We have a few unwanted visitors come in our garden at night, and I'm still trying to find a way to keep them out. I will succeed, but I think it's going to be an ongoing problem. Take care xx

    Dibbing holes with your trowel handle doesnt seem a great idea to me Claire, it's blunt and you could possible injure your hand on the blade as you push down. I use a pointy bit of dowel especially fashioned to plant my leeks. I also trim the roots to make pushing them in the hole easier. I guess this may delay them a bit but they still grow. Otherwise a great and useful video as usual.

    • @clairesallotment
      @clairesallotment  4 года назад

      I usually use a broom handle which works very well. However it's too long to fit in the cage and I don't want to cut it in half. Having to queue to visit a garden centre, I had to improvise, and my trowel handle seemed to work perfectly. They all seem to be growing rather happily in the soil. If the soil has been dug well, then it won't be too hard. I've never trimmed my leeks roots. When I had an allotment when we lived in Surrey I asked other plot holders if they trimmed their roots. One plot holder what had been on the site for over 40 years never did. If it's something you like to do, then by all means trim the roots, but personally I don't. Take care and stay safe and well.

    Hi Claire, just came across your videos here and they are really great. I have an allotment here in Dublin in a beautiful place at the foot of the Wicklow mountains. I love growing from seed and two weeks ago I planted out many sprouting green broccoli plants from.my beds. I am a little concerned as they've produced little yellow flowers but the plants are growing quite well.
    Have they bolted? Will they keep going and produce the green sprouts I an/was so looking forward to?
    Thanks.

      My husband Mark and I went to Dublin last August for a few days. What a beautiful city. Mark was at World Con, and I went exploring. I really would have liked to have spent more time there, but we had to catch a flight home. Hopefully in the not too distant future we'll be able to holiday in Dublin again.I rang the church bells at both of the cathedrals and another little tower nearby. The yellow flowers mean they've bolted, which is unusual for this early on. Cut off the sprouting section, water well and hopefully they'll be ok.

      Good for the rain to fill in the holes, not good for the wind to do the same. Don't worry, the soil will be lose around them, so the leeks should expand ok.

    Can I ask for help please. For years I have grown sweet peas mixed up with my climbing beans. My grandfather told many decades ago this was good for bee and other insect pollination. But a neighbour says poo as they are both fighting for the same nitrogen. What would be your thinking?

    • @clairesallotment
      @clairesallotment  4 года назад

      Growing one or two sweet peas with your beans isn't going to be a problem at all. You could always try nasturtiums instead if you like, and you can eat the flowers. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but others think they're better than everyone else. If your granddad said it was ok, then I would stick to that.
