I once read that Andrew Eldritch said his singing style is essentially working around the fact he can't sing. Probably why I love it.. I can sing along lol
Ah, the Sisters of Mercy - I still remember their cover of "Jolene". That was a very interesting and enjoyable performance, always did wonder happen to the Sisters. Great review and very informative!
@@rpvee unlikely remastered for broadcast, no. but yes the specific episode of the original show (the grab in the video here is from a different show). they've been re-running Top of the Pops chronologically for years on a channel in the UK, two eps per week and they've caught up to this one now. The best you can hope for re. remastering is that the capture of this one was done years ago, so if someone recaptures the new broadcast they'll presumably do a better job.
I just discovered this channel and I absolutely love your approach. I enjoy the interpretation of the lyrics especially! It's deep and not just superficial
Goth songs frequently have two voices, check out Grendel in Pax Psychosis. Usually one voice is a raspy talking voice that represent some evil and the other represents you, either the victim of evil or its combatant. So yes a spiritual and mundane theme are present. This is best danced to at a Goth club, where the emotional impact is tangible and which is dark, smoky and lit with lasers.
My lord ... I missed this one🔥😎 what a pain to have DJ Steve Wright interupt and voice over Ofra and the Sisters ... 🤦🏻♂️🙄 Driving kicking gothic dancing track but equally a storytelling river with Ofra lifting you out of the torrent of words.
absolutely 100 percent agree.... us HK die hard Sisters of Mercy Goths hated this version originally (it grew on me with time) - i think the original 1982 12 inch was the very first Sisters anything i ever heard and it will always be one of my all time favourite songs
Michal. I've got a challenging for you if you like sister's of mercy. Then I have got two tracks for you to check out. Because back during the 80s and 90s our type of music was considered as rubbish by mainstream before the sister's. So my gothic music challenging has to do with vocal range. Listen to KILLING MIRANDA The deviant. And Boy meets Gun. Only 3 albums released Because of musical difference between the Sony company and artists Because of what the last song boy meets Gun Because of the lyrics. So that's my challenging to you. Chris from the uk home of goth .
Well, I think Eldritch does have a great voice but he isn't a great singer. - Out there are so many (technical) great singers - TV makes a whole lot of money with it - without a voice. How many great voices have killed "Hallelujah"? How many voices like Cohen's are out there?
If you read comments out of nowhere that are intended to create fear and are written in the imperative, then perhaps there is something to the concept of hell.
The 8 minute version - "touched by the hand of Ofra Haza" is outstanding
What a monster dance floor song. One of the most powerful songs of my youth!

I taped this version from the TV and wore the VHS out... thankfully (in the UK) it's about to be rerun this weekend - after 20 years!
Wow, this specific episode? Would it be remastered?

@@andybarratt5185 Fingers crossed! Would love to see this in better quality after all these years of it being on RUclips in this current shape.

Hearing Ofra Haza sing is like the heavens open and, woah, you suddenly got religion! ❤

Holy... he is singing for real. On TV shows usually he did playback (Remember "More" 2 years earlier same show)
Now we got some goth loved it in highschool good band still listen today oldschool
All Eldritch’s lyrics are metaphorical.
Better listen to 1959 from the Floodland Album, displays his Baritone way better
Please do Marian from Sisters of Mercy
Mon époque magnifique

Prefer the original, just Eldritch singing.

It should just be a poem doesnt need music

this is a song about drugs and two people locking their selves up to do drugs. it's about the ups and downs of drug use.

We all know what ofra haza is doing . Why are you trying to imitate it and butcher the hell outta it ?
Hell is REAL. Repent of your sins and turn to God. Believe in his Son Jesus and be saved. God loves you.
