If more people travel by train and less people travel by road, the wear and tear on the roads, caused by tires slapping the road should go down and the bills for repairing pot holes should reduce. Modal shift from road to rail will also reduce traffic jams and make journey times for the remaining motorists better. So an investment in rail is also an investment in roads.
I remember going to Derry via Dungannon in 1964 I think, just before it closed, you could see all the infrastructure being pulled down along the way. It was a disgrace! Cheers from Australia.
