Valley of the Kikbeekbron, Hoge Kempen National Park Maasmechelen

The Valley of the Kikbeekbron is a 120-hectare nature reserve in and around a former sand and gravel quarry in Maasmechelen (Belgian Limburg), where seepages supply a pond with water, which then feeds the Kikbeek and flows to the Meuse. The valley is part of the Hoge Kempen National Park.
The Kikbeekbron is located to the west of the small urban area of ​​Maasmechelen (Municipal Spatial Structure Plan 2009). The nature reserve with an extensive pond is located in an excavated part of the steep edge of the Meuse valley to the Kempens Plateau. The valley is located south of the E314 motorway, north of the Weg naar Zutendaal near the village of Opgrimbie. The Ecoduct Kikbeek, completed in 2006, connects the Valley of the Kikbeekbron with the Mechelse Heide nature reserve to the north of the highway.[1] The valley is European protected as part of a Natura 2000 area (Habitats Directive area BE2200035 and overlapping Birds Directive area BE2200727 'Mechelse heath and valley of the Ziepbeek').
The Kikbeek once provided the driving force for the Kikmolen at the Kikvijver, now a recreational lake in Camping De Kikmolen, which was allowed to wear a blue pennant for years because of the excellent water quality. The corn water mill is indicated on the Ferraris cards as Kiekens mill. The Kikvijver is already mentioned in the 13th century as a gift from the chapter of Saint Servatius of Maastricht to the abbess of the abbey of Hocht.[2]
