Thank you for playing the calming music while you were steaking. It really helped while I watched in horror. ; )
Hahaha! I've seen people take a shot of whiskey right before they cut a steek. So funny! ~Kim
Thank you so much! You are amazing! I had to turn off the video for a few minutes to gather myself while you were using your scissors. Cutting your knitting is something I can't imagine!
Thank you. again.
😂 It was a little scary for me too, but I practiced on my swatch first. :) Kim
Goodness you are such a brilliant knitter and planner, just on a whole other level! But the agony i felt when you said, "if i can do it, anyone can!" Was excrutiating 😂
Yes Kim, you truly ARE A KNITTER! Just brilliant calculations and I love the facing on the inside of the cardigan. I have sewed all my life and I too feel the inside should look as great as the outside! Wear your sweater every time as I will never tire of admiring it! You have inspired me to take on one of Marie Wallin's beautiful designs and thank you so much for sharing all the tips and tricks you did to make it an easier project. Having the center perfectly is the most important thing and yours is brilliant. I have a steek sweater in process from a few years back and I have most of it done but you know how things get set aside....I am going to pull it out to finish. It is the Hedgerow Cardigan and I changed all the colors so it would have a more Southwest vibe and spit splice most of my color changes as they did not go the full row. Something the teacher at the time should have told me would make it so much easier. Arne always puts a facing inside, and I like that more than just a ribbon to cover the steek. Thanks for the inspiration and hopefully I can finish mine. I have the sleeves done, just need to be sewn under the armholes, and just a few rows left at the sweater top. Bad habit of mine setting things aside when they are near finished. Also, Jonna, I Iove the colors of your Soldatna. I printed out my pattern and am going to go in stash and start pulling colors. I am glad you found each other as I am alone and it is the You Tube Knitting Podcasts that have kept me sane while in isolation. In the end of October 2021, I lost my Shepherd Sonja suddenly, and my little black dog who loved her so much passed the middle of December as he was heartbroken without her. I have never had two dogs that just lived and loved for each other so much. They were both strays and were my babies. They were my family and brought so much joy and light into my life. So, it has been hard for me now really being alone as I miss them so much, but your podcast I just found today and you are so fun to watch and have brought new life into my home. I am so glad I found you, and thank you so much for taking the time to podcast. Happy Knitting! Sandy
Wow! Sandy, I’m so happy you found us too! Please pull your Hedgerow out and finish it!!! And if you’re on Instagram, use #showkimandjonna so we can see it! And your future Soldotna too! Jonna has made 2 of them and they are both gorgeous!
I’m so sorry to hear about your wonderful dogs. It must be so lonely without them. 😢 If you lived near us, we could meet and knit together in person to keep you company, but for now, our channel will have to do.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. ❤️ Kim
wow....i totally had a panic attack when you picked up the scissors and starting cutting..... Beautiful!!!!!
Haha! I’ve actually seen people take shots right before they cut their first steek. It’s definitely stressful. ❤️ Kim
“We value each other’s strengths and completely overlook each other’s weaknesses.” Oh my gosh, I just love this ! 💕💕💕
Absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for this! I've knitted many of Marie Wallin's designs and I absolutely love them... going to start my Orkney soon and and there's no way I'm going to purl that much. This was a very helpful video!
We're glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Kim & Jonna - I have been watching your podcast for months and somehow I missed this episode. This explanation of your methodology Kim is intense and yet if I were to endeavour to do that cardigan or another complex colour work knit I would probably do something similar. Because the analysis & planning is my MO for challenging projects, etc. That said, while I knit I get into the process…so I have a hint of Jonna too.
Cheers to you both!
Thanks, Fiona.
Happy knitting😍
Thank you! You too. 😉
That sweater is an amazing achievement!
Yes it is!!! I still can’t believe I knitted it!!!
I am in awe. That is a gorgeous sweater Kim. This has been a tutorial of sorts which I so appreciate. I love pink Jonna and I love your sweater. I am pink with envy! Take care girls.
Thank you! Someday, when we figure out the technology, we would like to do some tutorials. We're so glad you enjoyed the episode!
It was funny that you mentioned Arne as if you were with them....I feel the same, but was REALLY SHOCKED during Vlogmas when they were reading comments before seeing their gift and I heard Arne READ MY NAME and then my comment! It was a real thrill for me!!!!
Whaaaaaat???? That's AMAZING!! We adore them.
Wow, I never would have thought to steek the sleeves. Kim, that is Brilliant! I can’t get over that and then to top it off you had a video… wow 😱🥳🥳. Like Jonna said, no sleeve island! To add to that you ensure the pattern is more in line… that’s brilliant. Love it!! 💕you are a rockstar 🥳🥳🥳🥳.
😊 Thank you, but it wasn’t my idea. I think I first heard of it from Andrea of Fruity Knitting. But I definitely wanted to try it because I prefer knitting both sleeves at the same time even when not steeking. Happy knitting! ❤️ Kim
Stunning sweater
Thank you!
Still catching up on all your videos. This was a great and very informative one. Kim, you have mentioned in several episodes how you use your journal to record everything you do. I would love to see a more detailed (tutorial) to be able to apply it to my own knitting. Also Jonna, I would really like to learn more about ways to use Ravelry. I realize I should be able to "run" with what you have mentioned in previous episodes, it is just difficult for me to capture it all and apply it. Perhaps there are more people who would be interested as well. I am aware that is a tall order, so no worries if it doesn't work for you. In any case I truly appreciate and enjoy the two of you! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! We would like to do some tutorials!
Wow! Kim! What a feat of sweater engineering. Thanks so much for going through this project in so much detail. It was good to know that converting a flat pattern to an in-the-round pattern is not always as simple as we think especially in colourwork. So many of Marie Wallin's patterns are designed flat - there is one I have been considering converting (also sizing up as it is not size-inclusive) so you tips are super (!) helpful for if/when I ever get to the project.
Thank you for listening to my Orkney love letter! This was my favorite knit ever, and I love talking about it to whoever will listen. ❤️ Kim
Wowza! Had to come back and take another look at that amazing Orkney! Did you use the original colors? For some reason my Felted Tweed always looks so dull, but your colors are so vibrant and beautiful! Have purchased the pattern, and added it to my ever-growing queue of Marie Wallin projects. Fabulous, fabulous knitting, Kim!
Ha! Great minds. I'm just finishing up a Fair Isle pullover for my husband (late Christmas gift) and I'm doing my sleeves the same way. I hate having all that weight of the sweater as you're knitting the sleeves and I like doing them both at the same time. Your Orkney is GORGEOUS. It's on my list and I also plan on knitting in the round, so I appreciate all your notes and advice!
Yay! I haven’t knitted a sweater for my hubby yet, but he wants an Arne & Carlos design, so maybe in the near future. And sleeves two at a time are a must, right? Then when you’re done, you’re done! Thanks for watching and commenting! ❤️ Kim
beautiful Kim. You are amazing! I'd never figure it out in the round. Congrats.
Thank you! And yes you could. Maybe even faster than me. It took me two years to think about it and plan it out! But it was so worth it. :)
No, Lol, I don't even swatch. I just thank God for the yarn and knitting and then run with my needles! Jonna is that more like you?
I am happy you found such great friendship, truly blessed! I continue to believe for the same. Heart!
Hi Kimmie! Thank you so much for your sweet comment. As far as swatching goes, I usually just dive in because I am so anxious to get started. This said, once I had to frog a whole sweater because it was SO big! This was before I really knew anything about my knitting gauge. I tension my yarn differently now. I use Ravelry a lot to keep track of the needle sizes I use with various yarns, so now I have some reference, too, if I need it. Thank you for tuning in! Jonna
Omg Kim, you are had some baff makin your cardigan. I dinna Ken if coulda made yon lik yon wye. He is a beauty, though. Much love fae Shetland xxx
Thank you for watching! I had so much fun knitting every single row of my Orkney. It’s not perfect, but I made it with my own two hands and that makes me so happy! Much love from New York! ❤️
Spectacular accomplishment! I better start planning today if i want to finish it in the next 20 years. You are a master with your knitting projects. Thanks for sharing.
☺️ Thank you. But a master? I have just been knitting a very long time. I follow the instructions. I make mistakes. I modify if I feel so inclined. But I love every minute of every stitch of every row. I guess the ❤️ shines through? ~ Kim
I'm knitting a Marie Wallin cardigan in the round and mildly freaking out . . . . up to mid armhole and need to figure out the shoulder/neck set up. I was going to be forced to purl color work, but am now going to brave your method. Scary stuff. I want this to fit!!! So fun to knit . . . . surprisedly so. Love you gals
You can do it! And so much easier and more fun than I thought it would be. ❤️ Kim
I can't imagine doing a sweater like that. SCARY
Haha, Kim definitely isn't afraid of anything!
I love that you are both so brave in your knitting!
The cardigan is gorgeous! 💖
The photography throughout the video is beautifully done. 💕
Thank you so much! We’re trying. ❤️ Kim
Incredible Kim! What a masterpiece you have created. It would be an epic project knit as instructed but with all the modifications you’ve made it is even more awe inspiring. I’m not sure I’d have the patience and dedication you have to finish it! Also, I’d wear it everyday too because it’s so magnificent 😜 and I’d make sure everyone knew if made it myself.
Thank you so much! I still can’t believe I knitted it. And now I can’t wait to knit more masterpieces! ❤️ Kim
The opening song is such a vibe! I love it!
Yay!!! Really? I’m so happy you like it! :)
I learned of your podcast yesterday and I'm now binge watching the episodes. This is just the kind of knitting and the type of podcast I like. I'm impressed with your Orkney. I went stash diving and found that I have enough to make one, except for one ball of yarn! Did you use the same colors as Marie? I made her Lovage sweater and will have to do some surgery as the sleeves are too long. I hope you'll continue to podcast for a very, very long time! Thank you. Joanne (JConklin on Ravelry)
Hi Joanne,
Sorry for this very delayed response, but the last month and a half have been difficult over here.
Anyway, yes, I used the exact same colors as Marie except for two that were discontinued so I replaced them with other colors that matched as closely as possible. Are you going to knit an Orkney with your stash yarn? Which color do you need?
Thanks for watching! ~Kim
Love this sweater. Amazing work 👏👏
Your planning paid off - beautifully executed!
Brilliant! Thank you for sharing so many details about your process for converting a flat color work pattern to knitting in the round. Your cardigan is beautiful!
Thank you! It was so fun to knit and it's even more fun to wear! ~ Kim
Omg - I found the gold at the end of the rainbow. You guyz are amazing 🤩
Wow! I’m so impressed…..😍
I think you are genius to have figured out how to steek, not only the front but the sleeve holes. Your brain definitely works better than mine. 😜
😂 Genius? I thought about it for two years before I dove in. And I researched and planned. I’m sure you could do it too. ❤️ Kim
Great video! I have never seen the steeking between sleeves, that is brilliant. I hate color work on small circumferences.
Agreed!!
I never leave comments on videos but just have to commend you for your great work on this sweater! As a fellow knitter, I appreciate the way you’ve explained your methodical planning process. You’ve inspired me to use my bullet journals to plan out and document my process in the future. I also absolutely love watching your friendship and how you complement each other. If I lived in your area (I’m further north in Maine), I would be trying to join your knitting group! Looking forward to future podcasts :).
Thank you, Sheila!
I am a planner by nature. But right now I’m knitting a quick sweater and haven’t taken any notes. It’s stressing me out! Eek! And yes, if you lived near us, we would love to have you in our knitting group!
Happy knitting! ❤️ Kim
I found this so interesting as I have the pattern and have looked at it many times. I have attempted a small amount of colour work flat and remember abandoning the project !
Your cardigan is beautiful and I would certainly be wearing it as often as possible!
That is a beautiful sweater and a very challenging project. Love it
Before I knit a pattern from a publication, I usually look for errata on the website. Then print it out and tape it in the book
I don’t usually do that (too lazy! 😂) but it’s a great idea. However in this case, in doing my 2 year planning for the project, I found out that there were mistakes in the charts, so I asked Rowan to send me corrected charts. Which they did. But there were still mistakes. Oh well. I found them and fixed them so it all worked out in the end. ❤️ ~Kim
These videos are so relaxing. Thanks for also explaining some of the "knitting lingo".
Awwww… Thank you so much! And yes, knitters love to use lingo, but then non-knitters or new knitters have no idea what they’re talking about. We want everyone to feel welcome! :)
@@KnitTogetherwithKimJonna You're welcome!! 🙂
OMG I got anxiety when you were cutting. I know everything turned out amazing but I have never done this type of stitch before and I could see myself freaking out at that step. Its like magic to me.
It was actually fun! I was so excited to finally try it on. ~ Kim
Great job on steeking your cardi. You ladies both are awesome its my first time watching your podcast. 💖😘 i enjoyed and im looking forward for more podcasting.
Thank you, Patricia! We’re so happy you enjoyed watching. We’re having so much fun filming. Editing, not so much fun, but filming? Yes! We could do that all day long. 😂
Fantastic job on your Fair Isle sweater. Holding 3 strands of yarn it a bit much for me at this time, 2 is my limit.
Thank you! And 3 strands was a bit much for me too. Took so much longer. I was so happy when those sections were behind me and I could go back to 2 strands. 😂
~Kim
Thanks so much it was wonderful to see it close up! You are so clever to work out how to steek it. Now I will need to try to find the sleeve mistakes!😊
If you message Kim on Instagram, she can tell you where the chart mistakes are!
@@KnitTogetherwithKimJonna thank you 😊
Thanks for this great video and all the details on the sweater. I love Marie Wallin's patterns but have not yet been brave enough to tackle one. All your tips were very helpful. The sweater is gorgeous and I love the colours you choose.
Beautiful sweater!♥️♥️
an easy way to do the graphics is to photocopy the graphics increasing the size a 200% for example and then coloring .
Thank you so much for the suggestion! And I actually tried that, but the symbols were taking up so much of the teeny tiny boxes, that even blown up there wasn’t any “white” left to color. Hence my graph paper hack. 😂
~Kim
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I so appreciate the details.
Yay! So happy you appreciate the details!
Beautiful work! I’d love to knit a Marie Walin sweater.
You should definitely do it! Pick one out, buy the yarn, and cast on. ❤️
This sweater is gorgeous!❤ what an achievement! I may be contacting you about it.
Please do!
Wow
Very interesting video! Thanks for sharing your experience with this sweater. I was just wondering if you ever used KnitCompanion. I find it very helpful for following charts.
I actually haven't used Knit Companion, but maybe I'll try it out.
Thanks for watching! ~Kim
Thank you for this podcast...very helpful! I recently discovered your podcast and am catching up on all of them! I have steeked only once before and well worth it. I have to admit, I am a bit intimidated by level of colorwork (although it does look fun!). I am curious if Jonna is also planning on steeking her sweater when she does the same pattern?
Hi! Yes, I will definitely steek! Have you watched Mel Makes Stuff on YT? She just finished a different Marie Wallin sweater with steeks. She is an excellent knitter!
@@KnitTogetherwithKimJonna I have not seen that YT video! Will definitely look at it for sure! Were sweater yarns purchased as a kit..or did you just order recommended yarns?
THAT is amazing a lot of work, to much work for me.
Haha! It was much easier than I (Kim) thought it would be. You could totally do it. :)
Me again! 😀 Thank you so much for the detailed information! My dream knitting is lots of MW designs but I don't want to knit it flat either! How did you seam the sleeves? That is such a brilliant idea of knitting them together, as small circumference colourwork is not easy the way I knit it with magic loop! Adele
BTW I just finished binge watching all your episodes! 😀
I seamed the sleeves on the edge of the steeks using mattress stitch. Super easy. Just like a regular seamed sleeve. And YAY to binge watching! We will release a new video every Friday at 10:00 am EST. ❤️
This was great. What needles did you use? They look extra pointy.
I used my Knitter’s Pride Gratitude set of interchangeable needles. ~Kim
mindful.knitterspride.com/product/the-gratitude-set
Great episode! Kim, did you mention how long it took to make your gorgeous cardigan, after you made created your plan? If so, I missed it. Btw, I often draw and graph out pattern too. I find it easier to follow.
Hi Maureen!
I forgot to mention it in this video, but I did say it in Episode 1. The knitting took me 6 weeks and the finishing took me 1 week. And drawing and graphing the chart, especially for color work, is so helpful!!! I knew I couldn’t be the only one who does it. Thank you so much for your support!!!
What kind of thread to reinforce socks heel?
I've heard people using mohair, silk, or nylon. I know some sock yarns come with thread for heel reinforcement. I've never tried it. Keep us posted!
