- Welcome to a ride on Germany’s steepest mainline adhesion railway, the Höllentalbahn.
Literally translated, Höllentalbahn would be "hell’s valley railway" in english. The origins of the name are not clear. One theory is that French soldiers, who often had to march through the deep dark valley may have given it this name. At the exit of the valley, there is a town called “Himmelreich” or “heaven” in english - which may have been named as a result of the relief of having passed through.
Another theory is that the name stems from the word “Höhle”, meaning cave. Whatever the origin, it’s definitely an interesting part of the German black forest.
The railway also has a very interesting history which actually went on to influence France’s implementation of their 25 kV 50 Hz power system.
Construction of the line from Freiburg to Neustadt was completed in 1887. Due to the steep gradients, portions of the line operated as a rack railway until 1933. The racks were removed with the introduction of improved brakes and more capable steam engines in 1933, namely the heaviest tank engines in German service at the time.
The line we’re starting on, the “Dreiseenbahn” was opened in 1926, after construction delays due to World War I. It was electrified in 1936, together with a section of the Höllentalbahn to Freiburg. At that time, electrified lines were still quite rare in Germany. What made it even more notable, was the experimental electrification with 20 kV and 50 Hz - the first 50 Hz system worldwide (operating at the same frequency as household electricity). This required specially adapted locomotives.
After the defeat of Germany at the end of World War 2, south western Germany was largely occupied by the French. After evaluating the 20 kV, 50 Hz system of electrification of the Höllentalbahn, France also electrified a line with the same system, which served as a basis for the later electrification of their current 25 kV 50 Hz network.
About a year before this was filmed, many of the original catenary posts were replaced, however many of the original posts and elements from 1936 are still in use to this day!
Unfortunately a few stations closed in the late 70’s and early 80’s on the line. Posthalde & Höllsteig formerly had a passing loop and were equipped with mechanical signals. Today, practically the whole line uses the modern Ks signal system.

6:22 Aha! Da kommt also unser Erstaunen her!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Mountains are cool! Great landscapes! 🎉
Hollentabahn (Hell's Valley Railway) is showing us some really beautiful regions of Germany. Germany's black forest is AWESOME. 🌴 🌲 🌴😊
the name has nothing to do with "Hölle" (= hell)... the name comes from the verb "höhlen, aushöhlen" (=to erode, hollow out).
The uploader of this video said in the description that "Hollentabahn" would be translated Hell's Valley Railway in english. That's where I got it from.
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful travel route video after work. I wish you a happy and smooth work.
Thank you - that brought back lovely memories. We have taken the train from Titisee to Freiburg several times and driven around the Schluchsee so was interesting watching that part of the journey as well.
Good morning, nice video 🚈
Have a nice day, greetings Janusz from Warsaw Poland ✌️🇵🇱🖐️
Thank you, you too!
Excellent video my friends awesome like 👍🏻 Greeting 😊
Another amazing video from you. At Titisee, time stamp 25 minutes, there is a heritage train to our left with an old electric motor, what I believe is called a crocodile, leading a collection of old coaching stock.
Correctly discovered 😊: The old electric locomotive is the so-called "German crocodile" - the E 94 series
But more famous and probably better known is the stronger Swiss crocodile, the Ce 6/8" series 😀
Crocodile because the two front sections with the bogies were movable and could turn away from the main locomotive body when cornering in order to be able to negotiate tighter curves...
This and the green coloring probably led to this nickname
Thank you, I love your content.
I appreciate it
Amicalement.
I have got to watching cab rides at x2 speeds, it doesn't remove any enjoyment. Just means I can watch more of them!
Muito obrigado. Adorei.
Sehr gut!
Complimenti per il video. Il panorama è fantastico, mi piacciono molto video come questi.
Grazie
That was an interesting ride through a very scenic part of southern Germany.
Good job, thanks for sharing!
Beautiful !!
thank you for sharing this video
Excellent content, as always

Mach weiter so. Super Filme die du machst
Strictly speaking, this trip is NOT the "Höllentalbahn", but the so-called "Dreiseenbahn" from Seebrugg to Freiburg!
During the trip to Freiburg, the three lakes "Titisee", "Windgfällweiher" and "Schluchsee" can be seen several times 😊
The actual "Höllentalbahn" runs from Freiburg to Donaueschingen and branches off at Titisee station, as can be seen in the video.
In any case, an interesting, very nice trip in the best weather - thank you very much 👍🙏
The respective railways are already labelled in the video as you mentioned.
That's right - everything is in your video description... but I hadn't read it before because I knew the route and live in the German state that is home to this route... I'm sorry, I only went by the video title in my post ☺️
Thanks for the new video!I was pleased to see the mountains and the forest!Tell me, aren't you shooting a video this year?
Nice video. Found my neighbor's car in the video 🙃

In English: 🇬🇧🇺🇸
How very nice. How very lovely. Germany is a wonderful country through and through.
Video interessante!
Passenger only? The start down to Titisee is a very light weight track build. The use of VAV type track supports/sleepers know for use on poor ground to improve side load distribution and acceleration/braking loads into the ballast. (which looks thin.?). Nice views following the river.
As far as I know, there is no longer any freight traffic on the "Dreiseenbahn" shown here between Freiburg and Seebrugg, but on the "Höllentalbahn" between Freiburg and Donaueschingen, which branches off from the "Dreiseenbahn" at the Titisee station shown in the video! There is a paper factory in Neustadt which is served several times 😀
By the way, the train does not run along a river!!! In keeping with the name "Dreiseenbahn", which means translated „Three lake railway“, the three lakes are called "Titisee", "Windgfällweiher" and "Schluchsee" 😊
Hello. Video Super Klasse 🛤️🚅🚃👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks.......FIM🚂👮🏻🤚🏻

Actually I had a holiday there in around 2019 (before the pandemic though) and I remember there being double-deck trains on the line. Do they still use those?
Not anymore.
Thank you. This was recorded in July 2022 (see the title).
Does anyone know what the yellow V signs(1 forward facing one facing the reverse side) mean?
They are for snow plows, for raising and lowering the plow so track equipement isn't damaged
@@lorirocks777 thanks for the explanation :) mercivielmal :)
😀👍
Aha!
🥸
Camera angle was a bad idea. 👎🏼
Huh? 😂
@@lorirocks777 I’m sorry. That’s on me. It must have been my device. Evidently I was getting only the top half of the shot. This iPad is now officially obsolete and my new iPad should be here today. I may be your biggest fan!
@@franklinbrooks9506 Oh right. Well, glad it's sorted now.
'Aha'? Seriously?
🙂The Old German word Aha, Middle High German Ahe, means nothing else than spring or water. It can be assumed that the settlement was named by its founders as a "settlement on the water, at the source of the Aha Stream". See also Aach, the name of several rivers, or the German city Aachen.
I would like to see comments in praise of the content of your videos using proper descriptive words other than "cool". Lazy "Americanisms" are creeping into everyday use at the risk of losing proper English!
