You managed to extract some terrific sound from those worn grooves! ... It always seems to me that the drummer is the single most defining element of an orchestra's sound -- and I notice this with the Goodman crew more than any other. Hamp swings the band in his own unique way on this one.
Thanks - I spent over an hour physically cleaning this record alone. And yet, I was caught completely off guard at what exploded out of grooves that looked nearly worn smooth - poor thing has **no** shine whatsoever on the playing surface. It looks like it was, literally either sand blasted or caught the entire brunt of a desert dust storm. I've had this one for 4 years, constantly dreading trying to do anything with it because it looked like it was going to be an exercise in complete futility - but both tunes on this record are so damn hot that I took a long shot with it. And it paid off in spades - the flip side, BG's version of "Topsy", is even a little better! But yeah - **everyone** in this recording is right in the pocket. Not one note out of place, yet the flavor and soul just bursts right through. Rarely have I heard Harry James so expressive and emotive - like the fever was boiling inside him.
One of my favorite BG sides.

@@SwingMan1938 It was worth the effort thank you
This is an awesome piece and at first thought Dave Tough but nope.. it's Lionel Hampton according to the label.. sounding great.. TY
Thanks. :)
Yeah, Dave Tough was gone by this time - this was between the transition to Buddy Schutz on drums.
@@SwingMan1938 Would have been a lot more cymbal if this was Tough.
