I think Setoyama already had an eye for Kuroda on their first encounter and you can see it in his gaze. Setoyama was known to brush off other girls from the school but talks to her. During their Karaoke outing, he moves towards her and even followed her to get a drink and to go home. The sealed deal that he found out she is his crush was the handwriting comparison when Setomaya borrowed Erino's textbook and when Kuroda introduced them to each other.

There is a similar Bollywood movie made back in 2002
So basically A boy and 2 grls were friends but the Dude shifted Abroad.
Lets say X sort of liked the boy and wrote emails to him everday like she promised but instead of adding her name she added her bestfriend's name without telling her.
The boy fell in love with the writer.
Many yrs later he returned and stuff and X asked Y to fake that she was the one writing it.
