    Skinchangers are probably my favorite of the Kimerian "magical" being as I've always liked the concept of a person being able to shapeshift into animal. I wonder for how long on can a skinchanger maintain animal form? Are there any limits (I suspect there probably are) and does it depend on the individual's health, physical shape and experience?

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  2 года назад +17

      The transformation process itself can be quite strenuous and to do it an individual must be in good shape but more importantly have a healthy heart and lungs. It’s a super demanding process. Once transformed though they can remain indefinitely. There are accounts of skin changers in animal form with their simplified thoughts that went too long and forgot how to turn back, basically trapping themselves, so most try not to stay in fur for too long but for mental reasons not because it’s difficult to maintain. More intelligent forms like the indrakai, which are almost sapient, don’t run into this problem since their minds remain pretty much unchanged.

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  2 года назад +17

      Probably should have mentioned that the physiological transformation includes a brain size and function matching the animal form thats a pretty important component. Oops lol

    • @Andrey.Ivanov
      @Andrey.Ivanov 2 года назад +9

      @@TalesofKaimere Thank you for the detailed reply! You ended up also answering another question that I was going to ask about how the transformation affects their brain and mind. The fact that they can get trapped in animal form forever makes it quite dangerous to use this ability for prolonged periods. Also since they need to have a healthy lungs and heart does it mean that at a certain age it's better for the person to stop or atleast minimize transformation? Not that Kaimerians have to worry too much about that since their lives are quite long anyways.

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  2 года назад +8

      @@Andrey.Ivanov that is absolutely correct. Elder skin changers are often in much better shape than their peers and can often skin change as long as they’re in good health, but unfortunately heart attacks can drop shifters of any age so they are usually more careful with it than younger shifters, letting the process be more meditative and easing into it over the course of several minutes.

      That could work, although to safely use an artifact you have to attune your it (basically let the magic into your system slowly and create a bond so your body doesn’t have an allergic reaction). Most artifacts don’t like to share a host so you’d be playing a dangerous game.

      @@PaleoAnalysis yes, but only if the witch is strong enough to overpower the magic of the artifact or develop a bond with it so it doesn’t take them over and basically just make them a host. That’s why only witches are advised to bond with artifacts. It wasn't until my native races independently discovered the process of metamorphosis that they had to rethink shapeshifting's place in the world.

    Okay, this is very cool. One thing, can they transform only partially? Say, like developing the nose of a wolf but maintainin the rest of the body, or to develop teratorn wings while in human form (while losing your arms, of course).

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  2 года назад +2

      Yup! It takes a lot of experience and control to do it though. In Truth Seeker, Declan shifts his eyes for better night vision and his nose to track to try and find someone that he thinks might attack Faith. He remarks that it’s not as effective (his vision and sense of smell isn’t quite as keen as if he fully shifted but can improve it). Growing fangs and claws is a pretty popular partial transformation, but again, it takes a lot of control to not fully transform and if you’re stressed, usually you just fully shift.

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  2 года назад +2

      Some homunculi are believed to be skin changers that were locked in a partial shift.

    • @TalesofKaimere

      Also some shifters have permanent partial transformations, like werewolves often permanently are colorblind but have good night vision in human form.

    Question, how fast do the skin changers well change into the animal forms? Like is it a slow process or instantly or somewhere between?

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  2 года назад +5

      Another thing I should have brought up! It’s usually a pretty long process. A minute or two, although if you’re in great shape and are experienced you can trim it down, but if you go too fast your body can go into shock. In Lost in the Woods, I make a point of showing Declan’s skin change taking a while and being pretty shocked when his brother Liam is aided by his partner, a witch, who uses a spell to aid and it only takes a few seconds. Their magic has to be familiar with each other though or the shifter’s body might have an allergic reaction to the witch’s magic which could kill the skin changer.

  • @izukumidoriya1424
    @izukumidoriya1424 2 года назад +5

    Are the skin changers innate endemic magical ability there power to shapeshift alone? Or can other magical hives coexist with the existing skin changing magic and allow a skin changer to shapeshifit and manipulate there environment (through the use of having a non skin changing magic)?

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  2 года назад +2

      I get more into this in Halloween’s witch video and she short answer is yes, with a big ol caveat. Magic tends to specialize in its function and doesn’t share well. There is a lot of versatility, but if you don’t want to exhaust your magic, best to stick to a smaller specialization. If you overdo it you can kill some of your magic and will need a long time to repopulate. If you introduce a ew hive to one host you can risk them combating each other which can result in an allergic reaction that kills both strains and the host. Experienced witches say that it’s wise to have a few things you focus on rather than trying to diversify too much, but there are witches who have multiple things they can do including skin changing. The most common skin changers are the hereditary ones described here, and their magic usually fight off other magic that tries to enter the host. They have extremely powerful hives and it’s almost impossible to overpower their magic (making body and mind control spells quite ineffective against hereditary skin changers) but a downside of this strength is that most skin changers have shapeshifting as their only function of magic.
