    You forgot to mention the fact the subscription comes with access to Google Play Music which is a music streaming service like Spotify. Hank Green pointed this out, and said that the price for Spotify and RUclips Red are the same. So as long as you don't mind the slight differences between Google Play Music and Spotify (though the majority of the same content), you could just replace your Spotify subscription for RUclips Red and get a music streaming service and all of the other RUclips Red rewards.
    Personally, I cannot afford $10 a month subscriptions (I also cannot afford things like Netflix) so it's not for me. But I was convinced by Hank's argument.

      +Dixavd Hank makes a very good point! Something I should have said - anyway for me the main selling point is being able to get rid of ads and allow teachers and parents to do the same.

    • @CrackBaby3
      @CrackBaby3 8 лет назад +5

      +Ted Fitzpatrick I beg to differ. While Spotify may have more music than Google Play, the addition of RUclips with Google Play adds far more content than their competitors.

    • @headinthecloudsful
      @headinthecloudsful 8 лет назад +14

      +Jacob Garner in low quality though, Spotify has full album rips but RUclips has amateur 240p wankstain quality singles and Google play is probably one of the worst paid services I've ever seen with its content. Spotify has David Toop's rare albums and strange avant garde singles that I consistently can't find anywhere else.

    The only concern I have is that certain channels will start to purely produce content for youtube red and we'll see good free content dry up.

    • @LeiosLabs

      +nekogod even if they make onlyl few videos for youtube red still sucks ! if i am sub to some 1 and want to watch his videos then i want all his videos and not watch some and then some do not ! maybe if only the pay thing is just for special project movies and shows like netflix then maybe caus i wont care then ! but thiis is just the start and once there is $ in the game it will get deeper and deeper

    • @Thehopsalot
      @Thehopsalot 8 лет назад +2

      +nekogod Well if they do it would be a bad idea for the creators. They will actually make more money if they allow non RUclips Red subscribers to watch videos. Thats because they'd be making money from both subscribers and advertisements. While shutting your videos off to Red subscribers will only give you the Red money.

    RUclips Red is a great concept, except fo the whole human propensity for greed thing. Being a paid premium service with the ability to display RUclips Red only content, it seems like it may well be a death knell for high quality and accessible "free" content on regular RUclips.

    • @derek
      @derek  8 лет назад +60

      +Youblixuous I understand this concern but I hope that RUclips remains free for everyone forever in its current ad-supported form. I think there would be a backlash, that I would join if the high quality content became exclusively available behind a paywall.

    • @origamikatakana
      @origamikatakana 8 лет назад +9

      Communism is what happens when you try to take human greed out of economics.

    • @SebastianBlix
      @SebastianBlix 8 лет назад +30

      +2veritasium Thank you for responding to my comment. I too believe there would be a backlash if more and more high-quality content became exclusively available behind a paywall, but I feel that backlash would come from content consumers and would mostly fall deafly on the money muffled ears of content creators. RUclips Red provides a nice incentive to create RUclips Red exclusive content as opposed to regular RUclips, which is rightfully necessary for the model to work. If the incentive is there, however, people being people will attempt to maximize its usage to maximize their profits. This means lower quality content and more intrusive advertisements on regular RUclips. I do hope I'm wrong in this regard, but history has shown us otherwise time and time again.

    • @Utrilus
      @Utrilus 8 лет назад +6

      Its like saying you shouldn't get paid for doing what you love. Just naive. Work is work. And getting paid means more reward and incentive.
      Anyways to add, I would imagine that the youtube red exclusives would be more like Timed exclusives. If you aren't a youtube red user you won't know that the video came out a week ago so it will be procrastinating as usual, nothing changed.

    • @888SpinR
      @888SpinR 8 лет назад +4

      +Youblixuous It may be the case, but as I recall RUclips Red distributes the money based on, at least in part, watch time, so I guess it depends also on how many people sign up for the service, if 90% of your subscriber base are Free-To-Watch (FTW, which should totally be a thing!), I'd think you would benefit more by producing higher quality free content.
      My main concern is availability of the premium content in different regions. Since it's only in the US now, it means the rest of the world is excluded from said content, which in turn poses the same problem as the old-school TV distribution. Even after they do a global roll-out, would a premium subscription in, say, Thailand, have the same amount of (premium) content available compared to one in the US?

    $10/month is too expensive. $0.01/video is a lot more attractive. That would be 1,000 videos. I don't watch anywhere near that number.

    • @YipYapYoup
      @YipYapYoup 8 лет назад +31

      +Russ Abbott But then it would force channels to make longer videos because people wouldn't want to pay any amount (yes, even a penny) to watch for instance 5 seconds film. It would majorly fuck a lot of channels.

    • @stoltheds7698
      @stoltheds7698 8 лет назад

      The beauty of youtube is that it's free for all and that it's content is shared worldwide.
      RUclips will soon lose it's beauty and soul ; youtubers priority will be to make the exclusive content for youtubered ,maybe not at the beginning but after a while it will happen for sure.
      I am from a country of modest means and I won't be able to subscribe to this shit even if wanted to (not everyone is from the US) .
      I wouldn't mind if this was just to get rid of the ads , then it's optional , but the problem is in all the other bullshit.

    yes i and many other people hate ads, but i would hate paying $9.99 a month for what was originally a free service even more. Having used youtube for many years the number of ads and their show times have dramatically increased over the years, since the unveiling of youtube red, ive only seen that number increase. More people need to treat youtube as a hobby/passion and not a reliable source of income, it doesnt improve content, it only makes us free users put up with more ads. Having to sit through a 30 second ad for a 2 minute or less video would have been ridiculous a couple years ago, yet it happens today all the time... with people making youtube their source of income, they have essentially been put on a dog lead.. wouldnt you support a premium service if it increased your income? we need to voice our complaint now before they force even more ads on us free users in an effort to get us rolling out $10 bills/month for something which was originally free to use.

      Koby Dunham Not at all, because Netflix doesn't have a free alternative, and the content can't be produced by anyone. RUclips is for everyone, and you wouldn't expect movies or TV shows on it, so I have no clue why you're comparing the two.

      YipYapYoup RUclips already has TV shows on it. You also have to pay for those. RUclips also has movies, so I think I already expect movies & TV shows on RUclips. I'm comparing the two because Netflix is funding TV shows that are only available on their platform with their subscription. What is RUclips doing? Funding TV shows that are only available on their platform with their subscription. They both have funded movie projects too. What's the difference between the two, sir?

    Dude, the problem is what this symbolizes. It's moving RUclips to a worse direction. To a more money grabbing, greed perpetuating, exclusivist path. it's just not right maaan. i hope someday we can find an alternative to youtube, but its practically impossible at this point with the amount of videos youtube has. lets not make things work and too corporate. As it is, youtube has been adopting that corporate mentality with the Finebros thing. Please make RUclips democractically friendly and less greedy.

    • @satoshinakamoto5710
      @satoshinakamoto5710 8 лет назад +1

      You clearly have no idea about the mindset of corporations. There is one universal truth to all corporations and that's to make a profit. Any and all actions by any corporation must have a profitable outcome. If they suddenly started supporting "favorite creators", what happens to small youtubers? What happens to the organic and authentic culture of youtube? How can smaller circles get bigger?

    • @kobathor
      @kobathor 8 лет назад

      ***** Small RUclips creators are already at a disadvantage, this doesn't put them lower or higher. RUclips doesn't generate views out of nothing, they don't endorse "favorite" creators to get them more views, not right now at least. Of course RUclips operates like a business, working to turn a profit. Why is it okay for companies like Microsoft to do that, but not okay for RUclips to do that?
      Quick question- what point are you trying to make? You seem mad at RUclips for releasing new, exclusive content and putting it behind a pay wall- kind of like Netflix does with their exclusive series. Is it bad for Netflix to do it, too?

    • @satoshinakamoto5710
      @satoshinakamoto5710 8 лет назад +1

      "Not right now at least." Exactly. I don't like where this is heading.
      Microsoft is a company that sells an OS, Netflix sells shows, but social media companies like RUclips and Twitter sell their audiences to advertisers. RUclips has grown to be a valuable democratic platform for the world at large. Any movement towards greed could have heavy negative repercussions.

      Adrian Fahrenheit That is absolutely fine. But most pages and videos a visit/watch I do because they offer me something, either free knowledge, fun, or just games. If everyone turned ads off those pages would close because they wouldn't pay themselves up, and I don't want that to happen, so I don't care about getting a few ads as long as the people who benefit me get something on exchange. That is one reason not to use adblock

    A non-existent problem: does waiting 5 seconds harm you THAT much? Like seriously if you're paying money to save 5 seconds of time I find that spoilt.
    On a different note, I think "snatoms" are also a non existent problem: instead invest money in making computer simulations or projections, they would be much more useful. Let's be honest nobody learns solid chemistry using snatoms and ball-and-stick models.

    "Oh but it's just $10 and it's optional....", except it is actually $120 yearly, and not optional when creators go with red which is something YT is pushing for.
    And as with every service the following years will just get worse, only $15, only $20, only $25,... and then slowly not optional at all because most content got moved over.
    But hey what is $10 to you, well it is 10 on this site, then the next site asks for 10, and 10 on one after that, then the next game asks for 15, and then some software for a measly 25,..... and if you dare add it all up you realize these "small fees" are bleeding you for thousands of dollars yearly which should be going toward better things that actually matter.

    Hm... comment is also conflict of interest. Love your channel and started to get back into physics with over 30, even though I hated in in high school.
    So, I loved to watch the Uranium documentary last year on arte, even though I totally get your argument and think it's a very valid point to make. The option to watch videos without ads is nice. I would totally support that. The option to either pay to watch the awesome, more cost-intensive stuff you make or not being able to watch it at all sucks though.
    And that's pretty much my point: If I would still be able to see all your content without having to pay, I would totally be pro that choice. But this way, I am forced to pay a ridiculously high amount for just being able to watch your premium stuff. Next step will be promo videos where you will advertise your premium videos. Or regular videos where the meat of the stuff is only in the premium video. Given this, I actually like the old TV way. At least it's affordable for everyone, not just those who can pay $10 a month... I am really sad right now and don't think that this particular step is the right direction - for RUclips or your channel. :/

  • @felixkakashi1449

    The one thing that I want to see is some sort metric that lets users determine what sort of support that they giving to content providers. Something that would let us compare the value of watching ads, skipping ads, subscriptions to paid channels, RUclips Red, Patreon, etc. How much value is a "like" or "favorite" to a channel? Since things change from channel to channel, I have found it hard to really determine what the best way to support people. Some sort of measurable system that lets a user compare and contrast their options and the resulting "support value"(assuming the value is impartial) would be really helpful.

    I remember when Hulu had no ads. Then it added 1 or 2 adds. Then it added 3 to 4 ads. Then it offered a paid service without ads. Then it put 1 or 2 ads on the paid service. Now they are slowly increasing the number of ads on Hulu plus. Then they bought the rights to all the South Park episodes that used to be free. Yeah this sounds like a great model for youtube red...

I think when you're around something often enough you get used to it, and waiting 5 seconds to click away from an ad has become part of my normal RUclips experience for many years now, those few videos that have no ads are simply a nice bonus to find sometimes. The only thing that bothers me is exclusive content. This creates a wall of seperation, both in content and geography, when although the premium subscribers expect it, it is not needed. Making sure that creators are correctly rewarded and as you point out, educators don't have to worry about ads, that would be a better neutral model, and better for the growth of online content.
