The Casio PX-5S synth nails the Pink Floyd sound!

- The Casio PX-5 could have been legendary but like so many of it's peers from 2005-2015, it was let down by a terrible operating system that left the user stranded with a great sound and no idea how they got there. Or where to go.
The Hex-layers aren't 6 patches combined, but 6 waveforms where you have to edit each filter and envelope yourself.
Yes that's a more accurate way of defining it
Wow!
I want one.
I bought it for the piano sounds and the keyboard, the rest I consider bonus.
I feel exactly the same way about it.
Seems to me that the sounds of this beast are charming and unique. I wish Casio had put more effort into support software for this whole series. At least this one sounds great :) Happy Weekend!
It does indeed sound great, there's no doubting that!
I own both the Px-5 and XW-P1, they are 2 different keyboards with their own sounds. I love the program ability of the PX-5 . .the XW-1 has some good sounds stored in it.
Cool collection there!
Great sounding board and as always great review !
I have it, and I love it, so good piano keyboard, synth not so good, but many of sounds available for download.
You really did nil that On The Run cover. Sounds great!
Oh I can't take credit for that, it's available for download from Casio.
@@gearfacts really?!
Hi Glynn this one is really cool. I like the arpeggiator and the real-time controllers.
Unfortunately as with the CT-X series the great sound engine if this synth is being killed by its disastrous user interface.
Same thing with the CT-S500 and CT-S1000v unfortunately.
Sometimes I wish to have a Casio sound engine with a Yamaha PSR SX user interface 😂
By the way nice video footage.
Have a nice Sunday 😎
Yeah it's cool and nice to play. The owner just has to be content that getting creative with sound is going to be a real struggle :(
I have both the P1 and the 5S. For synth stuff, I'd prefer the P1 with a sound module. The 5s is my main piano when connected to the computer, it's even on my profile image ;). I had the G1 also. Don't sound very good but are great controllers and the P1 is great as a sequencer.
Good info, cheers :)
I was tempted to get one of these but I don't really have room for an 88 key synth. It's basically got the hex layer from the XW-P1 improved with real time filter control. The user interface must be a nightmare.
Yes menu digging is bad ;) But I use it mostly as a midi controller for my kontakt libraries and builtin pianos with external hardware and software effects. It's one of the best keyboard for pianist.
@@montazownianr1 I totally agree, I also use it mainly via audio in,.. as a sound distributor of the external sound sources, the PX-5S has great potential but it kind of fell into a pit. Still, I like this instrument also because of the keyboard.
Greetings😉😊
100% agree with all that
the hex-layer implementation of XW and PX only share the name ;) Due to inferior hardware/DSP you cannot reproduce the high quality complex synth pads of PX. XW has other qualities though.
Makes for a nice variation of the Easter Egg.
Thought it might be better for all just to summarize the best bits out of my 3 previous and not-so-good videos. I need to streamline this channel, there's so much content that whatever I add or take away seems to make no difference :/ Considering buying another channel and Gearfacts-ifying it. Cross-promotion and all that. Think that might be a good idea?
@@gearfacts I dunno. Your channel is already very well organized and your view counts are always very good. Facebook is kinda scary right now, but you may be able to use Facebook to promote your RUclips channel and videos, but be careful cause Facebook has very tight copyright restrictions. I noticed you already list gear for sale on a Gearfacts Facebook group. I know when I was on Facebook, I got a lot of cross traffic with my video uploads. Perhaps also get on other video sharing sites and add links? Too bad Google+ is gone cause I had over 2 million subs back in the day. I think a really catchy Gearfacts video intro "theme song" would be great too, cause a lot of channels have one, but .... it has to be "great", not too long and give ya goose bumps when ya hear it!
@@dawnr8511 Hmm, a theme song that's more than just a GIF set to a beat - great idea!
on the run. nice
I guess similar to the XW-P1 and XW-G1 which looked really good but had a terrible operating system. I read that the editing software was quite poor as well.
Yep that's true imho
Could you please share where to find and download the referenced "advanced sound pack from Casio"? I have tried googling, but I cannot seem to find such a sound pack officially issued by Casio.
Thanks.
I think it's this one (not 100% sure sorry, but it was definitely from this online group): www.casiomusicforums.com/index.php?/files/file/519-px-5s-xtreme-synth-bank/
@@gearfacts Thanks. I will try it out.
Hi gearfacts today is my birthday 🎂
Happy birthday!
@@gearfacts can you please a special keyboard video of a keyboard I like
CASIO seems to have made a complete mess of their legacy. With the price of components dropping and the rise of home-based recording and music production, CASIO keyboards like the old CZ, FZ, or even MT lines could have taken off, especially with Korg and Roland not really making many consumer-grade instruments in the early 2000s. I guess they were happy making digital pianos. It's too bad this version of the PRIVA line fell so short.
Yep, it was just that operating system... UI has been a constant problem for Casio even since their synths became screen-controlled (imho. Some people find it usable)
Menu-diving on any synth is a turn-off for me. I was hopeful that the recent vocal synthesizer would be a return to a button-per-function workflow, but alas, I was wrong.
@@lo-firobotboy7112 yeah there’s lots of menu diving on that one
@@gearfacts not agree. The touch display UI of PX 560 and MZ is super easy and intuitive, one of the best UIs of their time on sub-1000 bucks keys.
You are wrong...I have one..and can operate it well...mine sounds better than that
The Casio system seems to suit some people well, and I'm glad for that. But I think the general consensus is that the UI in this instrument is one of the things that led it to be a mediocre seller for Casio.
@@gearfacts I DON'T THINK YOU CAN PLAY..WE DIDN'T HEAR YOU PLAY .. SORRY CHARLIE... IT IS WHAT IT IS...PUT A VIDEO UP OF YOU PLAYING AND WE CAN SEE IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING....
@@ron-e5918 Calm down man
