Great points. Compliments are subjective. For those of us married guys, only one person's comments really matter anyway. Personally I get compliments on almost any fragrance I wear appropriately, some from guys, some from women. There is always someone out there that will like it or the companies wouldn't make it, so I just choose what I like. For me, the trick to compliments is figuring out the right amount to apply for each fragrance. Not easy, it's different for each one. I've noticed with the same fragrance, if I over- or under-apply, it gets fewer comments. If I apply it right, I get more comments.
Before I tried Bois du Portugal I thought it's gonna be real oldschool, but it definitely wasn't ... just like Eau Sauvage EDT. Bois du Portugal is trully a beautiful fragrance. BTW Gravitas when it dries down a little bit has a great compliments potential in a professional surroundings. I confirm that :)
I think women tend to compliment each other alot. I got a random compliment as I was leaving the office today. My colleague said she liked my scent, and that is was "manly". I was wearing Prada Carbon, sprayed 5hrs before. Not happening every day but it does happen. Love your chanel Mr Smelly. Interested in trying Gravitas Pour Homme.
In my case it is Baccarat Rouge. I like it yet I don’t love it. Got like 50 compliments for it and my gf loves it. I wear it when I want to get attention. Naxos works great too. Anyway I like wearing Egoiste, Kouros, Antaeus and other classics. They make me feel good!
Snap! I purchased a 200ml br540 for the Mrs. I do prefer the smell on her but the attention I receive when I wear it is noticeable to me. I tend to pair it with Aventus and this seems to be a winning formula on those occasions I want to be noticed without wearing something that might be offensive to others
I appreciate this video, and I agree fragrances should be personal, and it's not always about compliments. But I feel what makes fragrances different than sports jackets or watches, is that fragrances are an intimate experience that goes in the olfactory system of those around you, and those scents can evoke memories, emotions, feelings, and sensations without the person knowing where that smell is coming from. Very intimate. Whereas someone has to lock eyes with an article of clothing and there are not many intrinsic animalistic qualities behind those objects.
Absolutely superb review! If the fragcom would need to select a CEO it would be yourself! Professional, mature, well spoken & presented! You’d get my vote!!
Thank you for the honesty. While I really like chaosfragrances and Jeremy fragrance because they teach a lot, and they put a lot of effort into their videos, but the whole compliment piece to me is indicative of their facade. Thank you for peeling back the layer a bit.

A few days ago I over-sprayed Quorum and a lady told me I reek of it. I tend to refresh my fragrances to often because I get nose-blinded. I guess I can call that a compliment? Even if a negative one?
I don't get the 'hype' of Eau Sauvage. I tried it in store once and found it extremely odd smelling. Very medicinal. The ladies in the shop also said they didn't like it. Whenever I see it listed in a Top X list I wonder whether I've smelled a bottle that had gone off or something. I will have to try it again and perhaps somewhere else.
Because taste is personal and different, most reviewers judge on the top notes when the fragrance is first applied, fragrances tend to smell different on skin and paper....there are a million reasons why it makes no sense but nontheless is fun to watch 🙂
Colonia Assoluta is actually my favorite from the line. Very classy with citrus and florals. It's no longer listed on it's website unfortunately. Pura is also very nice, but is a lighter one.
Why is it that the new blend of a certain fragrance is never “better” than the original version. I can’t think of one review that has exclaimed “the new formulation of this fragrance is just blowing my mind”? Hmmmm....just wondering what’s up
It does kind of make sense. Who knows how long a perfumer works to perfect a certain scent (weeks, months, years maybe)? Then once it's perfected and released ingredient regulations change and they either have to substitute certain ingredients or drop them altogether. I can't see how reformulation in response to regulation change would improve a fragrance? On the other hand it is curious that according to reviewers no fragrances EVER seem to get better. That is strange.
Laws limitation that forces certain fragrances to reinterpret their (already perfect) original formula and the company itself that becomes hungry of fortune and decided to water the juice down.
I hope to try all of the fragrances that you mentioned in this list, and I'd like to try the one that's from your company (and Creed's "Bois du Portugal" also).
I love the point that in other areas of fashion, people don't focus on compliments at all. You don't have 10 most complimented watches, dresses, or coats lists. It's certainly something that makes fragrance an interesting area of fashion in this regard as it's not a big deal in other parts.
@@sunfunbuncha.2853 It's funny too because it's not just fragrance youtubers, but marketing for fragrances often takes the form of attracting the opposite sex.
I watch a lot of watch videos (watches are my other guilty pleasure - already have 40 of them) and yes they do make a lot of top ten lists - although they do not call them 'compliment getters' ... but it is intended to 'influence' or as they say 'inform' us. Btw Dan which watch are you wearing?

They do compliment videos in watch channels occasionally...but not a lot. The reason? The one's that tend to get compliments when they do those vids are classy-looking leather strap dress watches that may be super cheap like some Orient, or gold watches like a gold santos, day date, etc. The stuff most watch people like are "steel sports stunners" that are super expensive, but only in-the-know people would notice or care about.
