Medicaid is the payer of last resort and the reason it can subsidise non profit ALFs is its cheaper than paying for expensive skilled nursing care or a for a nursing home. The HCBS waiver allows states to keep people in residential or a home-like setting than in institutional care.
If you own a home, even if it is old, and ugly looking , stay in there and hang on to it. Once you move into good assisted living and you sell your house to move into ALF, you are stuck for life with no home to come back to. Never ever sell your house…..,
