You did a great job Georgia. I’m 61 so I’ve lived through a lot of these changes. I hope to live through many more as we’re no where near where we need to be!!
A friend of mine in college had a very similar story but a horrible outcome. Her great grandparents were a white man and black woman in the 1930’s, they had to live unmarried as it was illegal. They had several children, lived on a rural farm so that they wouldn’t be scrutinized and were very much in love and happy. I don’t know how the local town found out about their relationship, but they did, and her great grandfather got his family out before the lynch mob came, but he was murdered.
That's really sad. Lynch mobs are so evil, I can't believe how those people could live with themselves and I hope karma is real and they paid for their cruelty in some way
for anyone under the assumption that racism and/or institutionalized racism ended after the end of segregation, I suggest the book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. Great book, I saw the author speak last year and she was absolutely brilliant.
Hey Georgia, if your looking for an Irish murder mystery (that was later solved) than a great one would be the murder of Veronica Guerin. Veronica was a journalist and mother who, in 1996, was shot to death in her car, while at a red light, by two men on a motorcycle. This was done as revenge for her exposes on Dublins drug underworld. Initially in her career she had only done stories on financial matters, but she then took an interest in crime stories. When her stories increased in popularity, so did the risk. One time someone shot her in the leg at her front door. Despite this she wouldn't let herself be bullied into silence. After the tragedy took place, there was a national outpouring of grief and disgust and in the wake of her death, the gardai(police) launched an anti-crime offensive which resulted in many convictions and tackled the spiralling problem of major crime in Ireland. The president, the Taoiseach and the archbishop of Dublin all attended her funeral and many labour unions throughout the country had a moment of silence. They eventually found the two suspects, Peter Mitchell and Paul Ward and had them convicted. Most older Irish people know about her but not so much the younger generations. I had only found out about her when I was reading a book on great Irish women. Thanks for reading and great video, as always.
I love these two. The stength both had, her especially. She is also so beautiful. Im glad they stood their ground. This wasnt that long ago either and we still have issues to this day. Maybe one day we will all see our fellow citizens as equals and the government and our legal system truly will treat everyone equal.

This story gave me goosebumps what a beautiful love story. Isn’t it heartbreaking that we may feel like we got so far with civil rights but looking at the world today makes me question whether we will ever truly be equal regardless of gender, race or sexuality. Love is Love
This case and similar cases made it possible for me to marry my white husband. Although we are able to be together, racism towards our family is still evident. We are making progress and I hope it gets better for my children’s generation and many generations after. Thanks for sharing this!
im so sorry yall have to face ignorance and dipshits lol My daughters are 15 and 7. my oldests bf is black and my youngest has had a crush on a wonderful little boy who just happens to be black. I never once had a second thought about it. to me they were just dating who they liked but one day a fellow parent came up and asked me if I knew my oldest boyfriend was black. she basically thought she was coming to tattle on my daughter and that I would be aghast and ashamed. When I said " Yes, hes an amazing young man who we absolutely love having in our lives" she walked away fuming🤣 ffs, they're 15! let them experience young love, who cares what color their skin is. I was pissed cuz I knew if he'd been white she wouldn't have stuck her nose in our business like that. Well, short time later we found out that she was trying to move her daughter out of my daughters class by saying my daughter was a bad influence🤣 my daughters teacher basically told her to shove her racist head up her ass and homeschool her daughter if she was that concerned. Both of my girls have had a few handfuls of crushes and they've all been on boys who are black and I'm just excited knowing that one day I'll have gorgeous, stunning, precious mixed race grandbabies 😍😍 I couldn't care less what race the person they end up with is. All I care about is how they treat my girls. My oldest adores her boyfriend, we all do. He treats her like a princess, hes polite, well mannered, hasnt pushed her boundaries, he respects our wishes and we absolutely love him. I always joke that if they break up we get custody of him 🤣 I should probably mention that we live in Texas and even though the majority of people here, especially us millennials, are accepting there's still a large portion of racist bigots that love making everyone's life they dont like a living hell. Thankfully, for the year they've been dating they've not run in to any one like that. my bf in 10th grade was black and we were told we weren't allowed to hold hands in the hall at school because it "wasn't right". Pretty sure you can still hear my momma chewing their asses out when you walk down the halls 🤣🤣 She saw red for sure, so know what they did? they made it against the rules to hold hands with anyone. absolutely no one could hold hands..😤 Apparently the rule is still active but ive made damn sure my daughter and her bf walk down the halls holding hands proudly. I think they remember the lashing my mom gave them so they dont even want to test me about it 🤣 Regardless, it blows my mind that it was ever considered wrong to love someone merely because their skin had more or less melanin. its so ridiculously stupid. whats worse is the people who still think that way. what kind of ignorant dumbfck do you have to be to judge someone based on melanin?!?! ugh... thank all the gods I dont believe in that my mother raised me to not see race. She always said there's only one race, the human race and thats exactly what I tell my girls. we are all one race, we just have different cultures and geographic ancestry. Why am I crying? Thank you for covering this beautiful story! Ppl don't understand how much this still goes on. My black family and white family do not mix. Ppl still treat me different for being mixed race. Were still progressing.
As a black person I am definitely say racism still exist not to mention racism in a relationship, family and colorism. Soem people would rather blend in and look anything that isn't black just so they have a more privileged life. A lot of interracial couples or even mixed couples get treated very differently and when you ahev achild who looks mixed (all my nephews and my 2nd neices look either fully Latino or mixed) given they have 1 fully puerto Rican parent and the other being my sibling is mixed African American, Puerto Rican, Jamaican etc... Did a quick search. In 68 an advertising company came up with the slogan to promote travel. Originally was going to be Virginia is for “beach” lovers. Or Virginia is for “mountain” lovers or insert whatever other attractions then just simplified to “is for lovers”. That is of course according to the first thing brought up by google that I skimmed over.
Thank you for recognizing the fairness of the judges of the supreme court. While we need to continue making progress, this also shows how far we've come in a relatively short time. This is not only a story with racism but also a beautiful story of equality.
As someone who has had to hide a relationship, its so easy to relate to those who wanted to marry interracially. It's absolutely pathetic that other people are so invested in other people's lives that they have to stop them from being happy. It's in the Constitution itself. "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
@@carolgannon2307 Right??? I really don't either. Like I just want to date my partner in peace. I don't get mad when I see Straight Dude McWhitey flaunting Straight Woman McSorrority. Like I just don't care enough, it's not my business.
I just post an article saying how dangerous the Love ruling was for Black Families ( side note I was posting it to say I don’t agree and how it was racist) so to hear you say it was a positive affect when many people don’t feel that way is amazing. I am dating a white guy and when we broke up for a few months last year ...I would have blk men tell me they didn’t want to sleep with me because I had been with one of them or my favorite “ o You thought he was better” 🙄🙄
Georgia Marie I think it’s a great thing I was saying A lot of people don’t and it’s articles saying this ruling plus the feminist movement has destroyed the black household...
I've heard a lot about that, how many people in black communities see it as a sort of betrayal to date a white person, right? But it feels like the fact that they agree with white supremacist racists who were behind miscegenation laws is the real betrayal.
Wow i had no idea marriage between races was illegal. My partner is asian and I'm white and i couldn't imagine going through what Mildred and Richard went through not even that long ago
My great grandparents were mixed race. My great grand father being Native American and my great grandmother being White. My GGrandpa had to forge his birth certificate to say he was white so they could legally marry in a different state.
My boyfriend and i were just talking about this. Its crazy that if him and i were around 50 years ago, we wouldnt be allowed to get married. It blows my mind
I hate that people had to go through this! Im dominican, my dad is dark skinned and my mum is light skinned, i cant imagine this happening to them when they were married. We need to always remember these stories and these people so it never happens again!
@@oliveri3534 by native, i meant i was born here, not that i’m indigenous. sorry if that was confusing, but i thought i should clarify. and that’s a bummer, it would be very cool if there was a connection.
I live in Texas. I'm 25% German, Welch, Spaniard & others idk haha and 25% Blackfoot & Cherokee but my daughters and I are all light eyes, light skinned and blonde. My oldest is almost 15, my youngest is 7. They both find all their crushes end up being black lol & I have absolutely no problem, i didnt even notice their crushes were always boys who were black UNTIL another mother came to me and asked "It doesn't bother you K has a crush on a boy whose black?" im telling yall I saw red 🤣 Im shocked I didn't punch her in the face. I told her no, why the fck would I have a problem with her crush having a different skin tone and she snubbed her nose and walked away. Soon we found out she told the teacher her kids couldn't play with my daughter. thankfully the teacher told her to stfu and homeschool her kid if she was that racist. long story short, im fairly sure I will have gorgeous, beautiful, stunning, precious mix raced grandkids and I cant wait!!! Idc what sex, gender, race my daughters decide to date all I care is if that person treats my girls like the princesses they are lol So far they both like boys, not girls, and every boy they've crushed on have been wonderful boys who just happen to be black. Strangely though, some of their parents aren't okay with them dating outside their race and dont allow them to date white girls. to each their own i suppose but I couldn't care less what color someone's skin is, I only care about how they treat my baby girls. Unfortunately I know even in modern times there are a lot of people of all races who believe mixed race shouldn't be allowed and my girls will probably face some prejudices for whomever they decide to love but I've slowly prepared them for it as they age and I know they're going to be okay. I honestly don't necessarily believe in marriage lol have a big party, dedication ceremony but don't actually get married. the number one cause of marriage is divorce🤣 seriously tho, I cant wait for my gorgeous mixed race grand babies. im 33 and if my girls wait to have kids until they're old and done living their own lives ill hopefully be a grandma in 20 years 😄 im counting down, excited as hell.
Feels like so long ago but it really wasn't. So much progress has been made with racism but we still have a long way to go. 53 years ago would have only been the year before my mum was born
My grandfather’s cousin married a black man back in the 1930’s in Chicago. She had to place her children from previous marriage (all white) in an orphanage. While it may have been legal, it was certainly not a common practice at that time.
Love this video so much and I’m surprised I hadn’t heard of this case before! I feel incredibly grateful that I wasn’t born 40 years earlier, otherwise my own marriage would be illegal!! Plus, my husband’s sister married a black man as well, so interracial marriages are definitely common in our family. We often joke that my parents in law will look like they’ve stolen a bunch of kids whenever they are out and about with the grandchildren, because our children will either be mixed asian or mixed black!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Enjoyed the video and actually watched a movie based on them it always amazes me how slave owners enjoyed raping their slaves way back when and then for people to create a law that says you can't mix race by sex, marriage, or dating was ridiculous to me
That racist remark that the judge said should have bit him in the ass. If God meant to keep races apart, each in their own lands then what is he doing living in the land where God placed the Native Indians?
Thank you for this video I loved it! I had heard of this case before but didnt know much about it. This definitely had me emotional and it's crazy to me just 50 years ago I wouldnt be able to marry my boyfriend if i wanted too. Unfortunately racism still exists but aleast we finally get to marry who we love. Love is love💜💙❤💚💛

That would be interesting if this is why Virginias slogan is “Virginia is for Lovers”
That’s something I’ll never understand.....why some people are so invested in what others do in their relationships.
@@carolgannon2307 Right??? I really don't either. Like I just want to date my partner in peace. I don't get mad when I see Straight Dude McWhitey flaunting Straight Woman McSorrority. Like I just don't care enough, it's not my business.
This was my FAVORITE!!!!
I love that the couple's surname was Loving. Their story and name fit perfectly for the battle as an interracial couple to be legally recognized 💓
Sorry I don't think I understand your comment - are you saying that it's a bad thing that interracial marriage was ruled as legal?
Georgia Marie I think it’s a great thing I was saying A lot of people don’t and it’s articles saying this ruling plus the feminist movement has destroyed the black household...
I've heard a lot about that, how many people in black communities see it as a sort of betrayal to date a white person, right? But it feels like the fact that they agree with white supremacist racists who were behind miscegenation laws is the real betrayal.
@@JazminDaneen Oh yeah, as a non black woman who has dated black men my favorite is "you're stealing our men" ....
Rachel Paul girl it’s annoying... I have blk men tell me Im dating him because I think he is better then blk men.. when I literally never said That...
I'd love to see if anyone has done interviews with their children recently.
Wow i had no idea marriage between races was illegal. My partner is asian and I'm white and i couldn't imagine going through what Mildred and Richard went through not even that long ago
Oh my god, they fought so hard to be together, and then a cruel twist of fate tore them apart seven years later? That's so sad! 😭
I JUST watched this movie! I cried, I laughed... what a love story and a story of the fight for basic civil rights!
My great grandparents were mixed race. My great grand father being Native American and my great grandmother being White. My GGrandpa had to forge his birth certificate to say he was white so they could legally marry in a different state.
In SA- it was just 26 years ago that you could not marry outside your race. Its literally in my lifetime
My boyfriend and i were just talking about this. Its crazy that if him and i were around 50 years ago, we wouldnt be allowed to get married. It blows my mind
It's insane isn't it! It's crazy for me to think that just 7 years ago me and my girlfriend wouldn't have been able to get married here in the UK!
@@georgiamarie_ i didnt know you had a girlfriend!
I hate that people had to go through this! Im dominican, my dad is dark skinned and my mum is light skinned, i cant imagine this happening to them when they were married. We need to always remember these stories and these people so it never happens again!
I love the history series
I'm in a mixed marriage and so were my parents, it's crazy that both would be illegal not so long ago
native virginian here! i’m curious if the va slogan “virginia is for lovers” stems from this case at all. amazing video as always!
Non-native Virginian here! I was told that it was, but unfortunately no. It comes from an ad campaign in '68. The agency denied any connection.
@@oliveri3534 by native, i meant i was born here, not that i’m indigenous. sorry if that was confusing, but i thought i should clarify. and that’s a bummer, it would be very cool if there was a connection.
21:50 “isn’t that the exact same argument made in brown vs. board of education?”
*OOOOOOO BURRRRRRNNNNN!!!!!!*
53 yrs ago; not that long ago! You are a wise young lady yet, the amount of change in America is unbelievable.
I honestly don't necessarily believe in marriage lol have a big party, dedication ceremony but don't actually get married. the number one cause of marriage is divorce🤣
seriously tho, I cant wait for my gorgeous mixed race grand babies. im 33 and if my girls wait to have kids until they're old and done living their own lives ill hopefully be a grandma in 20 years 😄 im counting down, excited as hell.
It’s amazing to think about how illegal my family is!
yay, i'm finally in the special 4.5% :) this is def a great story. have a nice holiday GM and all here!
Yay! You too!
Crazy only 53 years ago. My parents are 53 it really puts it into perspective
Beautiful
I loveeeee your videos but the intro seems so long on this one 😭❤
Your comment about the grinch 😂😂
Feels like so long ago but it really wasn't. So much progress has been made with racism but we still have a long way to go. 53 years ago would have only been the year before my mum was born
I had no idea about this case. Thank you for making this video 🙏
Ironically i am watching this video as the west Virginia song is playing in the background
My grandfather’s cousin married a black man back in the 1930’s in Chicago. She had to place her children from previous marriage (all white) in an orphanage. While it may have been legal, it was certainly not a common practice at that time.
Orphanage, because her all white children couldn't be raised by a mixed race couple???? Wow. I can't imagine how she must have felt.
Enjoyed the video and actually watched a movie based on them it always amazes me how slave owners enjoyed raping their slaves way back when and then for people to create a law that says you can't mix race by sex, marriage, or dating was ridiculous to me
it's ✨CONTEXT TIME✨
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I WAS JUST A CHILD THAN
do Mitchell Quy he was on this morning and made his own documentary and its on RUclips while the police were investigating the order of his wife
I'll have a look into it!
@@georgiamarie_ the documentary was a prime suspect episode so just loo up Mitchell Quy and it'll be there
The people saying the were over dramatic are clueless and blind. Why should they have to start over. They did nothing wrong
Alabama only legalised interracial marriage in 2010
Because of the Loving’s, I was able to marry the love of my life 🖤
I can't believe that interracial marriage was only legalized 26 years before I was born, my dad is white and my mom is black
I live in Bowling Green... Ohio. Yeah.
crazy to think my marriage was illegal not that long ago...
🤭I call myself a string bean for the same reason
The hatred that Mildred, Richard, and their families experienced still exists in the United States. Today, the haters are more deadly.
That's the saddest thing about all of this, 50 years on and a lot of the thoughts and feelings still stand
Random consequences don't exist
That racist remark that the judge said should have bit him in the ass. If God meant to keep races apart, each in their own lands then what is he doing living in the land where God placed the Native Indians?
Just Commenting for the algorithm 😃
everyone no matter their color should be able to love whoever they chose it shouldn't be a government that decided x
