Hey, Welcome to the OFD Watch Channel. My name is Aron Dunlap, and I’m nuts about watches. What’s OFD you ask? Well, one of my best friends coined this term. It stands for “Only F@#*ing Dunlap” (sorry kids!!) due to some of the ridiculous things I can come up with, including watch collecting.
I have loved watches for years, but in the last few years really got into the collecting and studying aspect. I mainly buy Seiko and Orient watches, but I love everything out there!! (Omega, Oris, Rolex, Squale, Timex, Casio, Steinhart….and on and on and on)

I pulled my old 1976 6105 Willard out of my jewelry box after seeing a few comparisons on RUclips. I haven’t worn it since the late 90’s. Mine has seen better days,the crystal is all scratched up to the point it’s hard to read the script at the bottom of the face. After seeing Uncle Seiko waffle straps I ordered one and decided to send my 6105 to Seiko for a service and new crystal today. I can’t believe the amount original 6105’s are going for today! Incredible!🙀
Mine arrived today. Steel bracelet is top notch, the watch is nothing short of EPIC and worth every penny. Seiko knocked this out of the park. BUY ONE! I also have a Tudor Pelagos, and the Seiko has spanked it.
For me this is a design improvement over the original Willard by being slightly smaller and more rectangular for a better fit, while retaining all the Willard DNA from the bezel inwards.

@@garyk8285 Sold the 051 a third time. SBP143 looks great, but could be a tad small for me.
For people saying this is overpriced, I say with the brand, originality and quality on this, is well worth it compared to the 5 series. Great review as always sir.
What about brands like Steeldive? sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, nh35 movement and expect for the brand name on the dial it looks exactly like the Seiko. I have two I paid 110 euro for each one, they are high quality finish, screw down crown is butter smooth and they keep perfect time and have a great power reserve
Nice review Aaron. It looks sweet on the US waffle strap👍 Seiko is killing it this year with the SPB151/153 & SPB14X series. I’ve been a Seiko fan for 40+ years now and it’s great to see all of the retro inspired designs being released. The new Tunas will be released next Monday 8/10 and I’m looking forward to pick up the SBBN045. 🍻

I’ve had mine for a few weeks now. The bracelet is great but for me it looks at its best on these uncle Seiko straps. Mine is very accurate too. Loses a couple of seconds during the day and gains them back off the wrist overnight.

Is it worth spending the extra cash when I already have a Turtle 777 is the quality and style that much better?
@@FINEST-uz9ek Just depends on what you want I guess. I was really excited about it because Apocalypse Now is a favorite movie of mine and I always wanted that watch he was wearing. I only have one other Seiko and it's an Alpinist. So I also wanted a nice quality Seiko diver. It sounds to me like you're already happy with what you have.
Thinking of pulling the trigger on this watch from gnomon soon. I’ve read in the reviews on the gnomon site that people asked for the seller to check for bezel alignment before shipping and they sent pictures to customers to confirm there were no defects. Did you do any of this or did you just order? Any issues with quality control?
@@alexanderarduini No, the bezel alignment isn’t very important to me. Mine does line up well though.

Beautiful watch! I just wish they made the case a bit round-ish just like the original model because the case is so identical to the Seiko turtle & King turtle, its just that side around the crown which is different.
The case and the movement is diff

This has to compete with 3 JDM Sarbs with 6R , my Vostok 710 cushion case modded Scubadude , Seiko SRPB07J1 with Sapphire and 4R and a Bulova Accuswiss Chrono with Selitta SW 500 in it. All of them i got together for much less from new than 1 re-imagination of the Cpt Willard with that imo ugly X on the dial. But people want it at Seiko's new prices so I must be wrong for not buying into their new stuff.

From my experience most JDM models say made in Japan on the dial or on the case back. Still a beautiful watch man wear it in good health
Not this version though which is rather confusing. The J version and international are completely identical as far as i can tell.

Correct, just like the S23626 and SBBN040 are both claimed by Seiko to be Made in Japan, but the SBBN040 is the one with a kanji day wheel because it's the one intended for the Japanese market.

I purchased the captain Willard black dial pre owned for 650 in beautiful shape with steel bracelet from My very good pal Ralph that owns American Pawnn shop here in Seattle Wa. I also picked up a brand new Steeldive Homage on bracelet and black dial. The steeldive I put on a very nice grey nato and for the money.....wow... amazing how good this Chinese steeldive is. My JDM Seiko has the typical a bit off center bezel b.s. qualtity control.... the steeldive lines up perfect. And u really like the full lume bezel on the steeldive. My seiko Spb077 I really like.... this is a cool looking model.

Good video mate, bought mine from Seiya Japan when they released and I love it. Doesn't get much wrist time as opposed to my SRP77, but still, gets wrist time.

Love the watch, but I think I’ll wait a few months. With these out as non-limited, I reckon the secondary market for SLA033 is going to tank. Might be able to pick myself up a non GS but GS movement pretty cheap.
EDIT: actually, screw it. I just saw this on the waffle strap, my wrist skipped a beat. Ordering one now.

Someone help me out please . On all of the reviews of JDM watches I've noticed that all of the printing on the dials and case backs are in English. I would have thought if they were intended for the Japanese market it would be printed in Japanese. Sorry to show my ignorance but it puzzles me. It's become a bee in my bonnet! Thanks!

The obvious reason l know between the Jdm and international model is the the later has an international warranty card. In case there's a fault, you can service in your respective local seiko service centres. They don't accept the jdm card.
In my country, most watch shops sell seiko. Lots of competitions. We get good deals. I bought the spb153j1 for $830. l bought the 62MAS spb147j1 for less at $760. Apparently, being smaller, it has less steel cost, lol.
Google Shopee or Lazada, Asian online portals. You can see previous 62MAS reinterpretations like spb 071J1 selling for $660. The new reinterpretations are not sold there yet as they selling well in the retailers shops. Later, when there's ample supply, it will appear like before.
I bought the king turtle srpe07k1 for $400. The k models are made by seiko factory in my country, so, we get good deals. You can see them there. Are they value for the money? YES.
Gnomon watches doesn't give discount on these two bec it's hot right now. Take the other models as example, say sla021, you get about 21% off MSRP. In shops in the streets you will get more. Otherwise, they just drive over the bridge to the southern part of my country. That's what Singaporeans do. They shop across. 😁
And, yes, both my international versions have perfect alignment too.
Hey Aron, I had a few questions that I was hoping you might be able to answer:
- How does it feel to unscrew and thread the crown?
-How does it feel on wrist? Is it "top heavy"?
-I recently purchased a brand new seiko SRP 777 (turtle), how does this watch compare in wearing?

Imo the pin and collar system is better than screws. I've never had one fail me yet. It's just snobs who think they are superior. A lot work loose and you can damage the slots in the screws. Many people use glue to keep the screws in, says a lot about the design if you really think about it.
Great review and nice strap but think the Chocolate Bar looks much better and was what Martin Sheen wore.

I'd rather buy the steeldive c Willard I've got both and I can't understand how Seiko are charging the price they are while s.dive make a watch with all the same spec for so little money compared to Seiko

The sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel insert on the king Turtles is a great upgraded from the 777 if you want an upgrade. I think the 777 is an excellent, classic looking watch!!

good overview of this watch. My problem is that I own the Steeldive homage with the NH35 and mine is superb and kicking a** at +2 per day. What would make me buy this, even as a Seiko fan, its not a Willard its a reissue of something, not an exact copy a facsimile of the original all jazzed up with a movement with 70 hours. (who needs it?). Not to mention how inaccurate they are. I will stick with my trusty Steeldive with the venerable and very accurate NH thanks very much. Seiko really need to up their game. That name on the dial is starting to creek....for me. Rip off watch, sorry but there it is.

The off-center lume pip in the bezel insert would rive me crazy. Have it replaced under warranty. Other than that: gorgeous.
Per Karlsson : I don’t even notice it... not in the least. I like Japanese cars of the 70s, so imperfections are part of the attraction.
@@edteach3r Good. Got mine the day before yesterday. Reeeeally nice watch. All aligned, and keeps time within 2 sec/day so far.
Only bad thing so far is that the 20 mm NATO you have to use on this one is not as comfy as the 22 mm on the SKX.

@@edteach3r I am actually wearing my SKX right now. I'm out sea kayaking for a couple of days, and kayaking is serious Nato strap activity. Will put the Willard back on Sunday or Monday.
Very nice watch. I also got this from Gnoman. They really did a great job. Like how the crystal distorts the minute markers, makes it look like it has a chapter ring. The classic hands are nice too.
I noticed adjusting the micro-adjust was more difficult then it should be. It seems like it’s a very tight fit.
I think they just really nailed the tolerances. Mine is the same, you need to depress both sides simultaneously, which isn't easy. At least you can be sure it's tight, and won't rattle out😎👍

I am curious, What is the difference between this model (1.100 USD) and the SLA033 (4.200 USD)?, and, Why did Seiko did this move?, I don't get it.
SLA033 has a Grand Seiko high beat movement, and are built along side GS watches. Tgey were also built in limited numbers. These are straight of production line running the new low beat, 70hr power reserve 6R35. That's what I know 😎👍👊
@Cameron Klondike It is like cars, same model but with different engine. They are hard to distinguish since the movement is not shown. I think that they wanted to exploit the "limited" effect and then make money with a more affordable unlimited model, but that is a kind of mean to the "limited" buyers.
@Cameron Klondike The crown placement is a minor change, and most people, even watch aficionados will not / would not notice. But I have not seen them in the flesh, maybe you are right.

What is the bezel insert made of? I know the original was made of aluminium and they used to get heavily scratched.
Aluminum like the original.
@@OFD Thanks for replying. Considering how expensive this watch is it would have made more sense to have the bezel in scratch-proof ceramic. Is it possible that the aluminium might have a scratch-resistant coating?
@@ryokan9120 this watch is coated in diashield, a proprietary Seiko protective coating. This watch is really a remake of the original, so I like that it has the original style bezel insert. Ceramic won't scratch, but it will crack easily. I've seen broken Ceramic insert from seat belt buckles and a little nephew with a spoon🤣 Either way, inserts are easily replaced, and scratches are much easier to deal with than cracks.

The different is the resale price - JDM wins the aftermarket race for those who flip.

My understanding Watches actually made in Japan would have “Japan” printed on dial ... “Made in Japan” means basically assembled in Japan not manufactured in Japan

So what you're saying is only buy JDM seiko's only because the QC on non JDM ,models are sub par. Could you elaborate on the reason why you think a low beat movement with a 70 hour power reserve is so exceptional. Other than the look which l love by the way the watch is double the price of Steinhart which is a superior watch.
Well, Seiko is a 100% in house company. Movement, Sapphire, oils, SPRON technology, majic lever, Zaratsu fishing..... not one of which Steinhart can claim in any way, shape or form. I love Steinhart, I own Ocean 1 variations as I type this. But to compare Seiko innovation vs Steinhart Innovation.....well, that's where the conversion comes to a dead end brother.

Derek Shearer here’s a “reality check” for ya: I sold off a few watches (2 of which were seikos) to buy my grail Seamaster 8800. After just 5 months it had to go in for service because the date wheel froze. Pretty pathetic for a $6k watch. So I’ll be going back to my seikos once Swatchgroup fixes it. Never had an issue with Seikos.
And speaking of alignment: I had a Sub C that had a misaligned bezel insert and I recall a few of the older aluminum insert Seamaster having alignment issues as well. Seiko does a pretty good job overall. Especially when price is considered.
I prefer Vostok.
that watch shouldn't cost more than $400, anything over that and your getting ripped off

I like it, but I just don't think this watch is worth the price. 1.) It's a Seiko, you're not going to impress anyone you know. 2.) The movement accuracy is horrible +-15 secs/day; I saw one guy his was -18secs/day out of the box. 3.) Resale, only specific Seikos hold value after the first year they are released; most don't. Gone are the days of Seiko holding value since they cost a lot more to buy retail/online now and are the value proposition they used to be. 4.) If you get excited that your Seiko has good alignment, that says something about Seiko quality. Any other decent brand you expect alignment. 5.) Seiko boxes are the WORST; yes, boxes don't make the watch... but it's part of buying something you don't need - watches are not essential or useful tools anymore, especially automatic/manual movement watches. Team guys(aka SEALs) and divers all wear quartz G-shocks or similar watches and dive computers.

The "Instrument of Surrender" that you ask about was awarded to my wife's grandfather by the Local Legion of Valor on his 90th birthday. The family was going to sell it at a garage sale a few years back, and I rescued it. Makes a great background for my videos. Cheers!
