Our family just harvested chickens two weeks ago. My 13 and 11 year old sons helped with process. My 8 year old daughter didn't want to watch but she fed and watered them everyday for 12 weeks. My goal was to teach them husbandry between us and the land. We had fried chicken last night and they all were very proud to eat knowing the hard work they put in. They didn't leave any leftovers on their plate. I am very proud of my children especially in today's society! I like to let them watch homestead videos so they can see there are other children like them. I continue to bless you and your family!
Well done momma. My 10 yro old and 8 yro couldn't handle watching and thats ok. We let them know that we werent GLAD to kill our birds but we are trying to raise a healthier product for our family. They already notice a difference in egg quality. The kids helped w feeding them and cleaning cages as they were chicks. Its a process in time they may or may not develop comfort w but we wont force them to view that part. Im 42 it was MY 1st time butchering a live animal, i wasnt sure how I was going to react. 🙄
You don't harvest chickens as they are not fruits or vegetables...you have to kill them. Humans don't have the enzymes or colons to eat meat...we are fruitarian and not carnivorous...
I just watched this video thought it was interesting especially with all the different views on what we should eat. ruclips.net/video/rUfHFGjnLO8/видео.html
@@pinkiepinkster2646 You don't think vegetables and fruits are living things? And you are wrong about humans. We are omnivorous, like many other animals. An essential vitamin for life in humans is B12, which is obtained from meat, fish, eggs and dairy via a protein called intrinsic factor, that allows for its digestion. Look up "pernicious anemia" if you don't believe me. My grandfather died of it in 1924, before they knew what caused it.
Totally agree....if we are going to eat meat, we should be responsible for that life. It makes us appreciate it more and the life it took to provide it.
Jess I scored a pair of Boggs at a nearby thrift store, $17. Brand new still in the box. The ladies who run the thrift store look at me like I had lost my mind I was jumping around and whooping and praising Jesus because they were my size. It's the little things in life LOL
I got my first daughter a pair of Boggs at a thrift store for $3! After the lasted so longed I looked them up and my mind was blown! They now have been passed down to my two younger daughters and they still look brand new :)

“Making our appetites line up with our convictions...” that is such sage advice and is appropriate for many aspects of our lives. It really spoke to me! Thank you for sharing! I love this channel!
I grew up completely detached from the understanding of where my food came from until the day I met my husband and was taken on my first hunting trip! It is still the family joke that I cried the first time I saw a deer go down. Now after 16 years of marriage I will be joining him and so will my kids when they are old enough because it is so important for us to understand the reality of bringing that meat to the table. I also learned that most hunters and homesteaders alike, show so much honor for the life that is being sacrificed. That is what impressed me the most. I never thought to honor the life that was providing nutrition to my body before that experience. Oh and LOVE the socks!! LOL
I agree 100% about we all need to be VERY MINDFUL about what we eat and where it comes from. And I also love how you addressed the children about the bacon issue. Great job. I love your videos. Pammie from Chicago

Congrats on the deer. My husband just got back from the woods empty handed but we both plan on going this afternoon. I feel better when I know where our meat comes from. And nothing like sitting in the woods and watching what God created for you. Even if we do not see anything it is always a great time to talk to God and appreciate what he has given us. I'm excited for spring to start my first real garden and to have my first flock of chickens. Thank you so much for the advice you give us. I sure do appreciate it. God bless Jess. We were always taught where our food came from. I could never kill the animal but I had no problem dressing it out. I think it makes us better people when we take responsibility for the food we eat. I really enjoy your videos, watching you make things in the kitchen and working in your garden. Keep up the good work!

I was raised on a deer farm in New Zealand and watched my father process our sheep for the freezer. I am grateful that I always knew where the meat on our plate came from and have been able to discuss it with my boys even though we cannot raise our own. Your mindful conviction and faithfulness to the animals in your care is inspiring and thought provoking. As you bless us your viewers, so I bless you and yours.
I absolutely agree with you methods. It teaches you kids not only where their food comes from but it helps their common sense reasoning as well. Hi Jess, I agree with you, we need to take responsibility for our food production and understand that it was a life and not be so removed from the process. Your comment about showing graditude and being mindful to use every thing is so important for us to relearn. With heartfelt thanks.
I totally agree with you about the meat thing. People don’t want to think about the animal that gave their life for them to have a great meal. I think they should be grateful to the animals and not wasteful. Thank you
Jess, you keep telling it like it is! I've learned so much from watching your channel in such a short time. Don't you worry about the negative comments or naughty opinions. Our Lord says, "Don't be concerned about the opinions of others." If they don't agree with what you're doing or "eating", they don't have to watch! I never planned on raising animals for meat, but I feel a lot more comfortable with it watching you guys go through the process. Thanks for being so open with your life
I loooove this! I used to be vegan and due to unforeseen life changes I went back to eating the typical American diet. Now, three years later, I am slowly but surely starting my homestead (a garden and ten Americana chickens while buying what I don't grow/raise from my local farmers market. I hope to be able to expand to have meat chickens and rabbits, dairy goats and a larger garden. I've been watching your channel daily since finding it and you are such an inspiration!
I 😍 your out look about this, I've only watched 2 videos so far and that's all it took for me to subscribe right away, I'm hooked on your channel🤗! 😍your farm, kids are adorable & it's wonderful that your teaching them this way of life!✌
I think it is important to know where the food comes from and animals give their lives so many will have sustenance. There is a belief that many animals know why they are here and willingly give their lives. I smiled when the goat stood in front of the camera. Thank you for showing the truth of farming.
I was vegan for many years and my health deteriorated completely, although many people will state perhaps I didn't do it correctly (which I did, with supplements and all), it truly isnt our natural diet, as much as it may seem ethical, it isnt optimal... it did teach me to learn to know and respect where my food comes from and if i dont raise the animals myself, I buy local organic animal products, I feel healthy and happy knowing where my food come from. I hope when I have children someday to share this with them too :)
I appreciate your honesty with your kids. I hope that when I'm a mama, I can raise them with the same appreciation for their food- something not enough people in this modern world have. As for unboxing things- I love watching that stuff! You didn't drag it out at all during this video, and it gives us a look inside your daily life. Much love from Southern Arizona! 💚
I have been a vegetarian since I was 12, because I wanted to be a farmer and read about conventional farming...and it broke my heart....so I stopped eating meat...now we raise our own.. and I feel so blessed my kids can grow up eating healthy, humanely raised food...good job mama!
The best of being married is having a permanent closet share buddy!! I think you are totally correct on ethical and moral consumption of meat...and vegetables!! Food is a bounty that we need to be grateful for.
That was so well said at the end. We are in the same boat with raising our own meat right now. Still getting it all set up but the goal is to never need an outside source for meat. Thank you for speaking up and being so honest. There is a huge disconnect in our culture right now in regards to food.
I like unboxings and mail calls, usually. If The person is always getting new and improved toys, not so much. As for the meat issue, I appreciate where you are coming from. People SHOULD realize that their meat came from a living creature. And that it should be respected and appreciated. I wish I had found a way to homestead when my now grown children were young so that they would have an appreciation for the foods they consume. As usual, well spoken Jess, and kudos to Miah for the buck!
I love the fact that you show your not so perfect pig house! We send our pigs and beef out to butcher. We do process our chickens. With everything going on at our farm it just makes sense to send them off. Time, packaging etc. plus we barter for it too. Kudos to you on teaching your kids where meat comes from.
I really hope our family can move further toward sourcing, raising, and growing our own food for all the reasons you said. I feel the same way. Good job Mama.
Jess, very well said about raising and consuming your own meat. Corporate farms/slaughter houses look at livestock as just a commodity, and do not appreciate the life taken. Thanks for making this video on being self sufficient. It is a much healthier life style for both your family, and livestock.
Thanks for the frank talk about 'raising meat' ..very controversial issue.... acknowledging that bacon was once a pig can be addressed with your prayers over the food at your family table,( obviously), but yes, i agree ... it's a teaching that kids need to know. i grew up eating meat, mostly Alberta, Canada beef ... when my small urban family couldn't afford to buy ethical meat, i went vegetarian voluntarily, my daughter and hubby did not. So i cooked bacon occasionally for the next 10 years... in those ten years, i searched out alternatives... these included adding liquid smoke to mashed potatoes and then re-frying them up with either butter or oilve oil and some steak spice to make them look like it had bacon bits in the potatoes... actually delicious. Check your potato chip bags .... they'll be an ingredient on the side that says, 'smoke', ... doesn't mean anybody grilled those chips!! lol. Other great 'cheats' are smoky tofu strips which are also delicious ... many recipes online. always enjoy your visits, Roots 'n Refuge.
Such good words!!!! My daughter is super finicky about food....she doesn’t want to eat much of anything especially meat. She finally did eat bacon and likes it but she also doesn’t want to think it’s from our pigs. I wonder where that thinking even comes from??
Completely agree people & children should know where their food come from & appreciate it..not be wasteful or unthankful. Its so good to see others with the same mindset as my husband & I. thank you so much for bringing this subject to light
I wanted to thank you for explaining how you view the consumption of meat, and although I am vegan, I respect you for working on being conscious of its price (and that the consumer is not the only one that pays it) and teaching your kids about it. Take care.
I like seeing packages opened. I can save a lot of shopping time because of it. I personally don't eat meat, but I do purchase ethically raised beef, chicken, lamb, pork and fish for my family and prepare it for them. What ever this was filmed with sure did make a sharp, well lighted film. Thanks for sharing!! 😊
This has become my new favorite channel! Thank you for all the great videos. We live in Georgia, have 4 kids and are starting our homestead. Your videos have helped so much!!!!
You remind me of my wife. You’re a hard working Wonder Woman with a good head on her shoulders! And you both seem to enjoy a good laugh. You’ve got some cute kids and you’re raising them right, fearing God and working hard and enjoying it! Great video! By the way, nice ink!
Personally, I'll just remain happy to watch whatever you want to share. I hesitated to watch the last testimonial due to length but, at the end I was thankful I didn't skip it. God Bless. Edit....As an 'old codger', it did take me a couple of tries to look past the 'ink' and the ring, but you really are a wonderful gal. I can't imagine why someone 'would be ugly' toward you.~Eli.
Ben cuddling with a hen is the cutest thing ever. Its cool to see ppl open boxes or envelopes.( might have spendt to much time with the cat so every new box is a curiosity of what is it the box)
An experienced hunter taking down a wild animal is about as ethical as it gets with meat :) they live out their lives naturally and they’re gone quickly, not even knowing what happened (no time for fear). Plus, most game meat is incredibly healthy and low in fat
Great video. I was watching your video, as I am processing the deer that my husband got a couple days ago. I was going to go out hunting with him today, but work needs to be done on this deer. We are blessed with the meat that the lord has provided to us. I would much rather harvest our own meat than to buy it at a store. We do give thanks and say a prayer, anytime we harvest our own meat.
When I lived in Oregon and hunted with my first husband we would saying a prayer for the sacrifice of the deer and thanking our Heavenly Father for meat in the freezer.
Congratulations on getting a deer. Love that you are teaching your children to be mindful of what they eat and how it is raised. Attitude of gratitude. We need more parents teaching their children like this. You explain it so well.
I am a vegetarian and when I talk to people about why, I explain it how you do. I am working towards getting my own farm and expressed to my family if they wish to eat meat that it's fine by me as long as we raise and do it our selves. I am against the wasting of an animal and the poor health of meat in stores. So I appreciate the way you explained it. And how you teach your children.
Jess you are so wise beyond your years. The kids now don't know where there food comes from or even what it takes to get it to the table. Even my youngest daughter made a comment a few years back. That opened my eyes to what kids think about food. she really thought hamburgers where pretend meat. I can't wrap my head around that. I never remember a time when i didn't know this. It change the way I talk to my grand kids.
I remember reading Laura Ingalls Wilder and her sharing about when they killed the meat cows. Thank you for having this conversation in the present day.
I think your guest is correct, let us see some random funny stuff un-edited. We all love blooper captures. It will lighten our day. We need humor, because humor puts a big fat smile on our faces. The good Lord embraces humor or we wouldn’t have the ability to make one another giggle. Just let it rip lol 🦋💜
Mom has some awesome helpers there! Thanks for sharing your chores today. Agree with you on the meat issue, if we all raised our children to see eating meat this way we’d have a lot less waste! Have a good day!
Lmao, Ben in the brooder area. Lol...cool socks and boots. I would steal some more of Miah’s socks. Lol. Animals are food. These are things God gave to us for consumption. Thank you for sharing. Great job, Miah!
We processed our first batch of meat birds three weeks ago. It was my first time dispatching an animal and my teen granddaughters first experience ever. I cried. They cried. I prayed over every bird and gave thanks for their sacrifice. My prayer is they will respect life and be mindful of where food comes from. Eating meat is a responsibility. A responsibility in ensuring the animals are raised ethically and with kindness and not wasting a smidge. I look forward to our next batch in the spring. I respect someone's right to not eat meat. I choose to eat meat and am convicted to my core to raise them right. Quail is next on my list so I look forward to your journey.
I love this. It's so important to teach them young too. Part of the problem we have in this consumer culture is the cognitive dissonance when it comes to meat.
We totally agree with your meat comments. I'm always amazed at how many people don't associate the meat at the grocery with the animals from which it was harvested.
I think your stance on meats is inspired. You made me think about my own habits and how I can do more to help my kids take responsibility for the meats they eat as well. Great message.
I agree with you about teaching kids the value of the food they eat. The difference between raising and hunting your own meat and vegetables. You know what went into raising them and what food they where feed. Growing up on a farm raining the meat we ate to the a lot of the vegetables we ate I learned the value of food and the work that goes into raining them. I commend y'all for toward the goals y'all have. God bless y'all.
Great video and life lesson...I'm always amazed that people will actually tell me that they just prefer not to think about where their meat is coming from so they continue in their mindset even after I've tried to teach them...great job mom!
Thank you for making a stand. Although we aren't a farming family ( I married a city boy), I was raised on a farm and have raised our kids to value anything we eat. We are a consumer family for sure but are ethical consumers. It is possible to care for God's creation the way it was intended to be and still shop from the larger producers. I would love to homestead, but it's just not in the cards for us. So we focus on buying only meat and eggs that are labeled humanely raised - if we cannot find it - we simply do without. In summer, supporting local producers is a must but we're in Canada, so winters are another story. Anyway, it does my heart good with what you share, thank you!
I have recently found your page and I LOVE IT! I’m currently binge watching your videos. I very much so appreciate your views on raising animals and of course your views on raising your beautiful family!

It's like living vicariously through you as you open your boxes/ presents
And bogs are awesome!!!
I was nodding yes when you asked if we like to see you opening mail. It is the next best thing to getting to open my own mail.
Yes! People are so out of touch with the circle of life! Thank you for teaching them and us!
I love the way you think! We should value our meat more than we do. This is something I need to work on as well.
Goat photo bomb 😂 so cute and yes I agree growing your own meat is healthier than store meat awesome job momma teaching your babies right ❤
That was so well said at the end. We are in the same boat with raising our own meat right now. Still getting it all set up but the goal is to never need an outside source for meat. Thank you for speaking up and being so honest. There is a huge disconnect in our culture right now in regards to food.
So much wisdom... I'm watching this maybe a year later, and it is aging well, like a fine wine! :)
Aww! The kids are so cute!!! I really enjoy your attitude and videos. Your heart really comes through the tv😀😇
I love seeing mail being opened. Sometimes I can live vicariously looking at items I don’t have.
I just love that goat! 😄 Thank you for being willing to share the topics that seem to light a fire under some. 💞
Becoming one of my new favorite channels. What your teaching your family is true and real. Love the video.
This has become my new favorite channel! Thank you for all the great videos. We live in Georgia, have 4 kids and are starting our homestead. Your videos have helped so much!!!!
"Does your appetite line up with your conviction" 🤗what an amazing question to ask ourselves
I can't imagine why someone 'would be ugly' toward you.~Eli.
enjoyed seeing our dear Jess from a few years ago
Ben cuddling with a hen is the cutest thing ever. Its cool to see ppl open boxes or envelopes.( might have spendt to much time with the cat so every new box is a curiosity of what is it the box)
I love watching you open mail. Yes please continue
An experienced hunter taking down a wild animal is about as ethical as it gets with meat :) they live out their lives naturally and they’re gone quickly, not even knowing what happened (no time for fear). Plus, most game meat is incredibly healthy and low in fat
And it tastes amazing!!!
I am totally cool with you opening your freebies for all your fans to see~:-) Greetings from Parson Kansas!
“ Bout to eat a goat” lol 🤣😭
Great video. I was watching your video, as I am processing the deer that my husband got a couple days ago. I was going to go out hunting with him today, but work needs to be done on this deer. We are blessed with the meat that the lord has provided to us. I would much rather harvest our own meat than to buy it at a store. We do give thanks and say a prayer, anytime we harvest our own meat.
When I lived in Oregon and hunted with my first husband we would saying a prayer for the sacrifice of the deer and thanking our Heavenly Father for meat in the freezer.
So glad I found y’all maybe with families like yours and all the other good people out there we have some kind of hope for the future
Those little boys are just the cutest!!!
Those boys are a wonderful blessing
I LOVE watchin people (you and others on other youtube channels I watch) open things that are given to them.. So I hope you continue to do it..
I like watching your gifts it’s cool. Congratulations on the buck...I love you teaching your kids and involving them in your life. ❤️
I love watching people getting gifts And seeing what’s in the box
I appreciate your view on this so much.
I love this. It's so important to teach them young too. Part of the problem we have in this consumer culture is the cognitive dissonance when it comes to meat.
We totally agree with your meat comments. I'm always amazed at how many people don't associate the meat at the grocery with the animals from which it was harvested.
I just adore your boys and the way they live on your homestead !!! Keep up the good work !!! Irene
I think your stance on meats is inspired. You made me think about my own habits and how I can do more to help my kids take responsibility for the meats they eat as well. Great message.
Wow so crazy to see your kids a couple of years ago and how much they've grown!
Love this video!!!!!! Love your gentle honesty.
I agree, wasteful use of meat is disrespectful and cruel to the animal.
I have recently found your page and I LOVE IT! I’m currently binge watching your videos. I very much so appreciate your views on raising animals and of course your views on raising your beautiful family!
Thats great teaching your children the way of life .amen to you
Totally dig watching mail/gifts being opened❤️
