Thanks for your comment ‘Life Journey’, much appreciated. I’ve considered the accomodation thing and it’s a good idea but I’m not sure how enthusiastic I can pretend to be about it. Definitely the place I stayed in Fenghuang was interesting, balcony over the river and I could’ve explored that a bit. If I stay anywhere interesting in my next trip which is India, I’ll try to incorporate it a bit more.

There’s high speed rail connecting the two. When you get to Fenghuang station there is a tourist bus that will get you to the Ancient City. Leaving the place was a bit more tricky, the tourist bus wasn’t running (I think it was 6:30am) lots of people were trying to get to the station and there weren’t so many taxis. Lucky I gave myself plenty of time.
