The introduction of the rubber thong (flip flops) in the early 60s did away with the barefoot culture for the most part ,but you can still see them on a regular basis.in the summer . . The sausage on bread RUSS is referring to is known as a sausage sanga and consists of a barbecued sausage on a slice of bread with optional fried onions and tomato sauce, YUMGASYM.
That's becoming people in the inner suburbs think they are good to do it. It's done all the time in country communities aswell as the outer suburbs. Atleast the suburbs that have majority is Anglo-Saxon
I'm in Mandurah WA, and we have quite a large Scottish population here. There's a few Scottish families that I bump into regularly while crabbing/prawning or fishing in the large estuary that Mandurah is built on. We have abundant seafood at our doorstep here, and the Scottish families love getting involved and learnt to catch their own tucker, they go home and have a big feed, then get on the turps. The Scottish fit in here in WA no problems at all - Mandurah for the Scottish, a little further north to Port Kennedy and Secret Harbour for the Irish and Posh Scotts, a little further north again to Rockingham for the Pommies

My disability podiatrist is Scottish. My physio team of 4, 2 are Scottish. My granddaughters teacher Scottish. The deli across the park from me has a Scottish lady working there part time. There's a lot of Scottish here, and I see / mix with them almost every day. There's also quite a lot of Scottish that live in Albany on the WA south coast (lots of Pomms and Irish there also)

I like it when people put decorations on their trees, bushes outside. The sun is brighter here in Oz so it's nice to see the twinkling and sparkling of the decorations when you walk down the street. I grew up in Darwin, hated shoes or thongs bare feet everywhere.
The further north you go in Australia, the more relaxed it is. I’ve lived in North Queensland & have seen people in shops in bare feet. It was probably how they were driving, & they just popped into the supermarket on the way home?
I prefer driving barefoot. I wear thongs and just flick off the right thong and kick it to the side. Means I can slip it back on when I get out of the car.
I've worked with many different nationalities in the hospitality industry and I would say that Scottish people are the closest you get to an Aussie. Friendly banter, take the piss out of each other and ourselves without either being offended. You can have an argument at work with no grudges held. I worked in high pressure kitchens so it happened from time to time, but at the end of the shift we would be buying each other drinks. Also good taste in movies, tv shows and music. 😉 When you come here people will be extra friendly because they will love your accent!!! 😅
I would agree with this and maybe add the Irish as well. I love a Scottish or Irish accent it almost feels like home (not the best explanation). Must be the ancient Celtic blood in me hehe
When I was younger my feet were pretty tough because I'd go barefoot a lot of the time. I could walk on hot tarmac in the middle of summer at midday in Brisbane. Your feet toughen up over a surprisingly short period of time if you go barefoot often..
"Australians are generally friendly". Not for me. I live in Perth and ive seen a lot of people who are grumpy introverts and others who are stuck up and arrogant. Today i walked past at least 10 people on the street and i smiled and said hello. At least 3 of them greeted me back, 6 of them just ignored me and didnt even acknowledge me and one woman even glared at me and was like "why the f*ck are you talking to me?". If people here are friendly, id hate to see what theyre like in the UK.
Sausage and bread is what we call the sausage sizzle. Australia's DIY outlet Bunnnigs hosts a sausage sizzle every Saturday. It is run by a couple of different charity's and the Bunnings car-park is the venue. Yes Aussies are friendly, but just don't piss one off. We have a nasty streak. (South Aussies particularly :), yes I am a South Aussie) Back in the 70's you might have seen people walking around barefoot but not now. Most shopping centres have rules when it comes to bare-feet. He forgot to mention one drawback, getting branded by a seat-belt buckle in summer.

People go barefoot here in Vic, during the summer months, all of the time. Mostly in the Coastal towns though, although when I was a kid in Melbourne it was perfectly normal.

And you've lived in humidity, so the summer heat here shouldn't freak you out too much 🙂 As for the barefoot thing, it's only common in summer in warmer places and beachside areas like the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, northern NSW etc. Can't think of a time I've seen it in Melbourne, or in Canberra where I lived before that.
As someone who was born and bred in Queensland, I can say that going barefoot is something you do when you are young and haven't learnt of the hazards of hot roads, hot sand, prickles/bindii and green ants. Most adults will wear shoes, thongs or sandals for these reasons, unless they are at the beach, but walking up to the beach over the hot sand they won't go barefoot.
Bare foot. Bloody oath. I'll go bare foot whenever I can. Even though I know the chance of stepping on glass is likely, especially at the bottle shop, but fuck it !

Aussie Rules is much more popular nationally than either of the Rugby codes. A potato bake is what the French call potato dauphinois - layers of sliced potato baked with cream and/or stock and covered with cheese. Yum. The barefoot thing is definitely more prevalent in the northern states.
My brother went on a long holiday to various countries throughout Europe, with the bulk of his time in England, Ireland, and Scotland. He said that the Scottish sense of humour, especially the sarcasm, was pretty on par with Australia, and that he almost felt at home there because Scottish people related to him better than people from everywhere else he went. It makes sense, Australia being a mishmash of cultures, we adopt what we see as the best bits from all over. I guess our sense of humour and sarcasm came from Scotland.
I also see us Aussies as being less 'up tight' than the Brits, and likewise I feel the Scots are equally less up tight than the Brits. We're similar but more chilled out, which I think aligns us with the Scots very well. Though as others have mentioned, I'm sure my Scottish heritage plays a part haha.
As an ex bouncer in Australia, I threw out about as many Aussies as I did Scott’s. The ones I threw out the most were poms and the Irish. Those bastards get out of control! 😂 (I’m a woman😂)
Love this lol. a quick update on Christmas in Australia, yes it's very hot because it's our summer....but we do (mainly for those from your neck of the woods) celebrate 'Christmas in July' (our winter) it's become very popular too. So roasts and hot xmas puddings are the go then..lol
Being Scottish I think u will easily fit in if u move to Aus. Where u decide to move to will be key - and that very much depends on what u want.. Perth - all about the beach, family oriented but pretty slow and expensive Adelaide - very small easy to get around, friendly ppl and low cost. Not a whole lot to do. Darwin - HOT year round. Tropical climate, high crime and that’s where the scariest animals are! Brisbane - very laid back, biggest state so a lot to explore. Many very interesting ppl (bogan) also tropical so it rains a lot in summer. Price wise is similar to Adelaide. Sydney - pretty city, harbour and opera house. Most expensive city and very business orientated. Has lockout laws - Google it. Worst traffic Melbourne - It’s the most European city and is raked Australia’s most liveable. It’s the sport, food, fashion, cultural, coffee etc capital plus it’s cheaper than Perth and Sydney. Friendliest ppl. Winter gets very cold, traffic bad Hobart - small, super friendly, beautiful scenery. Prices comparable to Adelaide but it’s expensive if u want to leave due to being so isolated (Perth is also like this) Very cold winter too. I’m Aussie, lived here my whole life - definitely do not wear barefoot in public, nor do i see it very often. Maybe in QLD but definitely not Melbourne. Most of us swear ALOT 😂 it’s part of our language and not meant with malice (mostly) more to show passion about a subject. Also, in Melbourne most places are open late - I’ve also lived in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane where most places close early…
I must say that I was a small kid in the 50’s and during the summer months I was always barefoot playing in the yard. Have never done it as an adult though.
Mat do you remember me telling you you can play Aussie rules right where you are now. They have an amateur league which of course is not as brutal as our game. More a social game with beers and barbecues afterwards. Search Aussie rules in your area.
Aussie rules is the BEST game EVER lol.....West Aussie, who's a West Coast Eagles supporter While I was living in Illinois USA, it was one thing that dawned on me that I'd never given any thought to before, but I found watching the kids, with back packs on, drudging through the snow to get to school the day after Xmas really really sad - compared to our, 7 weeks of school holidays that starts 1-2 weeks before Xmas day, followed by Xmas day itself (the 2nd best day of the year in my opinion as a kid) followed by the best day of the entire year as a kid Boxing day, when all the adult rellies are recovering from Xmas hang overs, by drinking the hair of the dog that bit them, while slouched over any chair they've managed to squeeze into, while the telly is blaring loud with the cricket boxing day test match, the dining table is covered with left over Xmas food, and coz the parents aren't playing "behave in front of Nanna on Xmas day", Nanna has gone home, us kids can eat what we want, how much we want, when we want, while at the same time playing with all our cousins and our new Xmas pressies - yeah of course there's fights, but the parents are too far gone already, and they've been stuffing their faces all day long, and are all taking turns at snoring their heads off still on the same chair from this morning, and us kids aren't gonna do the right thing and go to bed at 7 - 8 pm, you're kidding, we've got our cozzies on and we're in the swimming pool now coz it's cool enough to be out there. We'll come back inside, polish off the rest of the food table, head on into the games room with the other cousins, and one by one starting from about midnight, we'll fall asleep on the floor where we play, until our mums would come, pick us up and pile us all into the bunk beds or onto the blow up mattress's......From a kids point of view, not a hope in hell would I swap my Aussie Xmas for a white one up north, yeah nahhhhhhh
As someone who's family immigrated in Australia over 40 years age, we still have the British Xmass, immediate family and the full turkey dinner, but Boxing day is greater family, friends, beer and cricket eating all the leftovers with a BBQ!😊

I went backpacking in the late 90s and everywhere I went they heard my accent and I got the job straight away. We had a good reputation for being hard workers.
Yeah, the English guy was pretty simplistic about that. I once had a job where I worked 10, 12 and even 14 hrs a day. Super stressful - and it didn't even pay that well.
I cook the same meat as the UK & America on Xmas Eve, we just have it cold. I'm North Queensland born & raised, I've lived in Brisbane & Melbourne for short periods, and I've travelled from Port Douglas to Melbourne by rode on various different rode trips. I'm not built for cold weather, so North Queensland is for me 😂

Melbourne (large, cooler, 4 seasons in 1 day, lots of green, night life, AFL). Sydney (very large, expensive, traffic, night life, great harbour, zoo, Rugby and some AFL). Brisbane (large, touristy in places, great weather for half the year, night life, theme parks, great barrier reef, Daintree rain forest, Rugby and some AFL). Perth (medium, very modern, hot, night life, isolated, national parks, mines, AFL). Hobart (small, Coolest, very green, good food, great wilderness, cleanest air/water on the planet, historical sites, natural beauty, AFL). Darwin (very small, evolving, hot/humid, 2 seasons wet/dry, natural beauty, AFL). All States: Great National/Local Parks, Good Food, Awesome coffee, Good beaches, Good Education and Health system, low crime, gun laws, good pay/holidays,friendly people.
You missed us here in Canberra! Best place to raise kids, close to everything such as Sydney/Melbourne/South Coast and mountains for ski-ing. Hot in summer, freezing but sunny in winter, loads of kangaroos all over the city and we NEVER see the politician's as they hibernate at Parliament House during the week and go home to their own States in the weekend.

A lot of my friends didn’t own shoes until high school. western Australis is great, we live in a small town on the cusp of Perth Metropolitan area so close to the Indian Ocean and the country. Australia is the best country in the world.

If you live in Melbourne you have more cafes etc open later...our Coles supermarkets are open till midnight since covid..used to be 24 hrs, at least where I live...most places have late supermarket closing....it seems since covid a lot of places in my state have closed earlier...the thing about no shoes doesnt happen so much in Sydney and Melbourne...maybe if youre getting out of your car briefly to go to the supermarket...possibly in Qld. more common, but its generally too hot on the pavement to go without, aaltho Qld is a lot more relaxed...we may walk on the grass without shoes sometimes...and as kids we went barefoot in the countryside on holidays..My maternal ancestral side is a lot of British, Scottish not far back, and I think our humour is pretty similar.
Over here lots of people walk around bare foot, not so much in the city’s, and definitely not to work or the like, but when at home if you choose not to ware shoes, who cares! That’s the best thing about Australia, not so much judgement.

QLD, tropical, rather hot, average temp would be for summer 30-37deg celcius. WA not unlike QLD, maybe hotter, more sun than all the states, summer 30-42deg Celsius. VIC, everyday is known to have all 4 seasons in it. So plan for cold even though it looks sunny and hot. Generally 20-35deg Celsius. SA, a bit like WA but maybe a bit cooler. Tasmania, the coldest as all tropical rainforest. Average for summer would be at most 30deg Celsius. NT, the hot desert one. Really sticky, very high temp and humidity. Cyclone wet season is in summer, so it gets crazy. NSW, similar to QLD but maybe a bit cooler, but also has really hot days in summer.
There’s a few inaccuracies in this, like shops . Most places have 24 hours trade somewhere, if ya desperate and don’t mind a 15 min drive. But that’s nothing, this place is more spread out than the u.k. But he’s basically on point….and we don’t have much affection or none for English either, something to do with sport.
You won't find a spider in a shoe you don't wear. While I don't recommend it, I've gone into a meeting with the general manager of a multinational company without shoes on.

It is where we live in Sydney., not near the beach. But you see people dry off from the community pool, pop into the shop next to our apartment block for drinks or ice creams, then head back to the pool. Or just if they’re going downstairs to check the mail or collect packages.

I have terrible feet…I grew up in England…my children..and now grandchildren …they all spend summer bare foot..they all have perfect feet…for me being barefoot feels wonderfull!!!…also we have air-con through the whole house not just one room ..expensive..much better than the old wall system’s that only heat one room…

I've lived in fnq for 23 years, I love being barefoot as much as possible, because of summer heat I'm showering 3-4 times a day, another thing is shorts, for the last ten years I've only worn a shirt or tshirt when I go out, so I basically live year round in a pair of shorts
Living in suburban Sydney you don't see people without shoes. We are 50km from the beach. When it's hot we always at least wear a pair of thongs, so we don't get Bindi in our feet or tread on something sharp. I do understand why some people would though as it's so hot with shoes on and your feet just sweat, and the moisture gets under your feet, and it feels awful. I go barefoot round the house a lot. Where it is reasonably safe to walk unless you get a Bindi in the carpet. It's a weed that the flower when ready to go to seed turns into nasty prickle and they hurt like hell. Fortunately, they are only seasonal.
Been barefoot most of my life, as I’ve gotten older it’s not as well accepted so the minute the weather starts to improve the thongs come out and last well into autumn

The further north you go in Australia, the more relaxed it is. I’ve lived in North Queensland & have seen people in shops in bare feet. It was probably how they were driving, & they just popped into the supermarket on the way home?
I prefer driving barefoot. I wear thongs and just flick off the right thong and kick it to the side. Means I can slip it back on when I get out of the car.
I've worked with many different nationalities in the hospitality industry and I would say that Scottish people are the closest you get to an Aussie. Friendly banter, take the piss out of each other and ourselves without either being offended. You can have an argument at work with no grudges held. I worked in high pressure kitchens so it happened from time to time, but at the end of the shift we would be buying each other drinks. Also good taste in movies, tv shows and music. 😉 When you come here people will be extra friendly because they will love your accent!!! 😅
I would agree with this and maybe add the Irish as well. I love a Scottish or Irish accent it almost feels like home (not the best explanation). Must be the ancient Celtic blood in me hehe

When I was younger my feet were pretty tough because I'd go barefoot a lot of the time. I could walk on hot tarmac in the middle of summer at midday in Brisbane. Your feet toughen up over a surprisingly short period of time if you go barefoot often..

Today i walked past at least 10 people on the street and i smiled and said hello. At least 3 of them greeted me back, 6 of them just ignored me and didnt even acknowledge me and one woman even glared at me and was like "why the f*ck are you talking to me?". If people here are friendly, id hate to see what theyre like in the UK.

People go barefoot here in Vic, during the summer months, all of the time. Mostly in the Coastal towns though, although when I was a kid in Melbourne it was perfectly normal.

And you've lived in humidity, so the summer heat here shouldn't freak you out too much 🙂 As for the barefoot thing, it's only common in summer in warmer places and beachside areas like the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, northern NSW etc. Can't think of a time I've seen it in Melbourne, or in Canberra where I lived before that.
As someone who was born and bred in Queensland, I can say that going barefoot is something you do when you are young and haven't learnt of the hazards of hot roads, hot sand, prickles/bindii and green ants. Most adults will wear shoes, thongs or sandals for these reasons, unless they are at the beach, but walking up to the beach over the hot sand they won't go barefoot.

Aussie Rules is much more popular nationally than either of the Rugby codes. A potato bake is what the French call potato dauphinois - layers of sliced potato baked with cream and/or stock and covered with cheese. Yum. The barefoot thing is definitely more prevalent in the northern states.
My brother went on a long holiday to various countries throughout Europe, with the bulk of his time in England, Ireland, and Scotland. He said that the Scottish sense of humour, especially the sarcasm, was pretty on par with Australia, and that he almost felt at home there because Scottish people related to him better than people from everywhere else he went. It makes sense, Australia being a mishmash of cultures, we adopt what we see as the best bits from all over. I guess our sense of humour and sarcasm came from Scotland.
I also see us Aussies as being less 'up tight' than the Brits, and likewise I feel the Scots are equally less up tight than the Brits. We're similar but more chilled out, which I think aligns us with the Scots very well. Though as others have mentioned, I'm sure my Scottish heritage plays a part haha.
As an ex bouncer in Australia, I threw out about as many Aussies as I did Scott’s. The ones I threw out the most were poms and the Irish. Those bastards get out of control! 😂 (I’m a woman😂)
Love this lol. a quick update on Christmas in Australia, yes it's very hot because it's our summer....but we do (mainly for those from your neck of the woods) celebrate 'Christmas in July' (our winter) it's become very popular too. So roasts and hot xmas puddings are the go then..lol

Where u decide to move to will be key - and that very much depends on what u want..
Perth - all about the beach, family oriented but pretty slow and expensive
Adelaide - very small easy to get around, friendly ppl and low cost. Not a whole lot to do.
Darwin - HOT year round. Tropical climate, high crime and that’s where the scariest animals are!
Brisbane - very laid back, biggest state so a lot to explore.
Many very interesting ppl (bogan) also tropical so it rains a lot in summer. Price wise is similar to Adelaide.
Sydney - pretty city, harbour and opera house. Most expensive city and very business orientated. Has lockout laws - Google it. Worst traffic
Melbourne - It’s the most European city and is raked Australia’s most liveable. It’s the sport, food, fashion, cultural, coffee etc capital plus it’s cheaper than Perth and Sydney. Friendliest ppl. Winter gets very cold, traffic bad
Hobart - small, super friendly, beautiful scenery. Prices comparable to Adelaide but it’s expensive if u want to leave due to being so isolated (Perth is also like this)

I’m Aussie, lived here my whole life - definitely do not wear barefoot in public, nor do i see it very often. Maybe in QLD but definitely not Melbourne.
Most of us swear ALOT 😂 it’s part of our language and not meant with malice (mostly) more to show passion about a subject.
Also, in Melbourne most places are open late - I’ve also lived in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane where most places close early…
I must say that I was a small kid in the 50’s and during the summer months I was always barefoot playing in the yard. Have never done it as an adult though.
Mat do you remember me telling you you can play Aussie rules right where you are now. They have an amateur league which of course is not as brutal as our game. More a social game with beers and barbecues afterwards. Search Aussie rules in your area.

While I was living in Illinois USA, it was one thing that dawned on me that I'd never given any thought to before, but I found watching the kids, with back packs on, drudging through the snow to get to school the day after Xmas really really sad - compared to our, 7 weeks of school holidays that starts 1-2 weeks before Xmas day, followed by Xmas day itself (the 2nd best day of the year in my opinion as a kid) followed by the best day of the entire year as a kid Boxing day, when all the adult rellies are recovering from Xmas hang overs, by drinking the hair of the dog that bit them, while slouched over any chair they've managed to squeeze into, while the telly is blaring loud with the cricket boxing day test match, the dining table is covered with left over Xmas food, and coz the parents aren't playing "behave in front of Nanna on Xmas day", Nanna has gone home, us kids can eat what we want, how much we want, when we want, while at the same time playing with all our cousins and our new Xmas pressies - yeah of course there's fights, but the parents are too far gone already, and they've been stuffing their faces all day long, and are all taking turns at snoring their heads off still on the same chair from this morning, and us kids aren't gonna do the right thing and go to bed at 7 - 8 pm, you're kidding, we've got our cozzies on and we're in the swimming pool now coz it's cool enough to be out there. We'll come back inside, polish off the rest of the food table, head on into the games room with the other cousins, and one by one starting from about midnight, we'll fall asleep on the floor where we play, until our mums would come, pick us up and pile us all into the bunk beds or onto the blow up mattress's......From a kids point of view, not a hope in hell would I swap my Aussie Xmas for a white one up north, yeah nahhhhhhh

As someone who's family immigrated in Australia over 40 years age, we still have the British Xmass, immediate family and the full turkey dinner, but Boxing day is greater family, friends, beer and cricket eating all the leftovers with a BBQ!😊

I went backpacking in the late 90s and everywhere I went they heard my accent and I got the job straight away. We had a good reputation for being hard workers.

I'm North Queensland born & raised, I've lived in Brisbane & Melbourne for short periods, and I've travelled from Port Douglas to Melbourne by rode on various different rode trips. I'm not built for cold weather, so North Queensland is for me 😂

You missed us here in Canberra! Best place to raise kids, close to everything such as Sydney/Melbourne/South Coast and mountains for ski-ing. Hot in summer, freezing but sunny in winter, loads of kangaroos all over the city and we NEVER see the politician's as they hibernate at Parliament House during the week and go home to their own States in the weekend.

Barefoot in public isn't that common, but you see it a bit more often in the cooler seasons.
Most places are open between 8am and 5pm. Some restaurant places are open until 10pm, with kebab places being open until 3am.

I grew up in Queensland and only wore shoes to school and church. A lot of my friends didn’t own shoes until high school. western Australis is great, we live in a small town on the cusp of Perth Metropolitan area so close to the Indian Ocean and the country. Australia is the best country in the world.

If you live in Melbourne you have more cafes etc open later...our Coles supermarkets are open till midnight since covid..used to be 24 hrs, at least where I live...most places have late supermarket closing....it seems since covid a lot of places in my state have closed earlier...the thing about no shoes doesnt happen so much in Sydney and Melbourne...maybe if youre getting out of your car briefly to go to the supermarket...possibly in Qld. more common, but its generally too hot on the pavement to go without, aaltho Qld is a lot more relaxed...we may walk on the grass without shoes sometimes...and as kids we went barefoot in the countryside on holidays..My maternal ancestral side is a lot of British, Scottish not far back, and I think our humour is pretty similar.

Over here lots of people walk around bare foot, not so much in the city’s, and definitely not to work or the like, but when at home if you choose not to ware shoes, who cares! That’s the best thing about Australia, not so much judgement.

QLD, tropical, rather hot, average temp would be for summer 30-37deg celcius. WA not unlike QLD, maybe hotter, more sun than all the states, summer 30-42deg Celsius. VIC, everyday is known to have all 4 seasons in it. So plan for cold even though it looks sunny and hot. Generally 20-35deg Celsius. SA, a bit like WA but maybe a bit cooler. Tasmania, the coldest as all tropical rainforest. Average for summer would be at most 30deg Celsius. NT, the hot desert one. Really sticky, very high temp and humidity. Cyclone wet season is in summer, so it gets crazy. NSW, similar to QLD but maybe a bit cooler, but also has really hot days in summer.
There’s a few inaccuracies in this, like shops . Most places have 24 hours trade somewhere, if ya desperate and don’t mind a 15 min drive. But that’s nothing, this place is more spread out than the u.k. But he’s basically on point….and we don’t have much affection or none for English either, something to do with sport.

It is where we live in Sydney., not near the beach. But you see people dry off from the community pool, pop into the shop next to our apartment block for drinks or ice creams, then head back to the pool. Or just if they’re going downstairs to check the mail or collect packages.

I have terrible feet…I grew up in England…my children..and now grandchildren …they all spend summer bare foot..they all have perfect feet…for me being barefoot feels wonderfull!!!…also we have air-con through the whole house not just one room ..expensive..much better than the old wall system’s that only heat one room…
Bare foot in public is mostly done in Far north Queensland and they don't shower regularly. We mostly find it odd to see someone bare foot

Living in suburban Sydney you don't see people without shoes. We are 50km from the beach. When it's hot we always at least wear a pair of thongs, so we don't get Bindi in our feet or tread on something sharp. I do understand why some people would though as it's so hot with shoes on and your feet just sweat, and the moisture gets under your feet, and it feels awful. I go barefoot round the house a lot. Where it is reasonably safe to walk unless you get a Bindi in the carpet. It's a weed that the flower when ready to go to seed turns into nasty prickle and they hurt like hell. Fortunately, they are only seasonal.
Culture shock is they have to get used to drinking beer cold and meat pies hot.
