The Dai or Tai are ethnic minorities whose ancestor lived a long the Yangtze River over a millennium. Over centuries they migrated southward. The majority eventually settled in the fertile plain of today’s Yunnan Province. Between the 7th and 10th century A.D., many Dao’s ethnic groups united and created the powerful Kingdom of Nanchao. Many Chinese Empires tried to conquered them over the centuries but were not successful, until the 13th century when the Mongols swept across China. During these turbulent periods, many Dai migrated south into the mainland SE Asian peninsula. The migrants scattered throughout SE Asia. The migration of the Dai people continued for several centuries due to non-stopped civil war in the Chinese Emperial Dynasties. For instance, it is believed that their descendants established the ancient Lanna Kingdom (located in the present day Chiangmai Mai, Thailand) that lasted from 13th to 18th century. The Dai like the people of Lanna were Indianized in language, religion and cultures. They practiced animism and eventually adopted Theravada Buddhism. They cultivate wet-rice farming using water buffalo. The Dai people, just like the people in Chiangmai Mai, Thai Issa , and Lao, still eat sticky rice as their main staples diet. If you ever visit Northern Thailand or Laos, especially Xiang Khuang Province and Luang Phra Bang (the ancient capital of Laos), you will see the remnants of the old Dai or Tai cultures all around you. As a matter of fact, Luang Phra Bang (the ancient capital of Lan Xang Kingdom of Laos, which used to be called Meung Sua) was believed to be founded by a Dai or Tai Prince in the 8th century A.D; In Lao History of Khun Borom (in Chinese chronicles, Khun Borom was called Pilogue) his named was Khun Lo. It was documented that Pilogue sent 7 of his to invaded and subjugated Mainland SEAsia (Burma, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam) which during this those times were controlled by the Khmer Empire. This is why it is not easily disproved that the ancestors of Burmese, Lao and Thai are the Dai or Tai people. We have the same ancestry. I’m Khon Lao living in America.
Pilogue sent 7 sons to invade Mainland SE Asia and fought with the Khmer. The fall of the Khmer Empire from dominating the majority of SE Asia was partly due to Nanchao’s relentless attacks.
