- The Gibson Moderne is the holy grail of solid-body electric guitars. Join Dan Erlewine, George Gruhn, Mike Moffitt, author Ronald Wood and others as we discuss the history of this elusive instrument, including the specific story of the black guitar that hung in a shop window in Tokyo for decades. Hosted by Rob Disner.
I have an 1983 Heritage Series Gibson Moderne Korina. Dead mint, collects grade. As Far as I am concerned that is the first release as the Moderne was never released so these are the first production as the others were a "thought" not produced for the public.
Great guitar. Should have bought one while they were still relatively cheap. Unless we find an original some day, your Moderne IS the original! Thanks for watching.
Can't thank you enough for putting this interview together, but there was one thing missing, ...... They're saying the routing was incorrect on the back of the guitar. But nobody seemed to notice the pic of the Explorer at the 57 NAMM show. There are no tone knobs or selector switch.... all 3 guitars at that 57 show weren't completed guitars !!!! They were interesting shapes they took to see what the general public would have thought, "should we make these" . If a Moderne body or Moderne with a neck attached that had left the factory, it most likely was never was routed in the back !!!!
That’s a really good point. Thanks for watching!
Great round table!
My primary question is: If someone in this time period had a Gibson neck & wanted to build a body for it, why would they build a Moderne AND where would they have ever have known it existed if it had never been photographed?
Even if the guitar is a “fake,” I still think there is some connection to Gibson. It was made by someone who had access to their files, or their discarded rejects, or some other sort of connection that allowed them to build this oddball guitar.
The design would be known from patent drawings.
@@iragitlin7549 Right. But who had access to those in 1970, or whenever the guitar was built. Couldn’t be too many people.
Hey guys! Why does Dan's camera keep bopping around like that? What makes THAT happen? 😊
He was getting a manicure at the time!
I've been fascinated by the Moderne ever since I read about it in a book decades ago. I have 2, an ebony 2011 version, and a recent Epiphone. They are quirky and cool. George Gruhn is kind of rude. This isn't the first time I've seen him interviewed and he has come off as kind of a crumudgeon.
You want a collector grade 83 Gibson Moderne, let me know. I have one and need to move it. Basically unplayed.
Nice snakes 😜
