  • Nobody has done more to wake us up to the threats of climate change than former U.S. Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Al Gore. Despite the urgency of the climate crisis, Gore is resoundingly optimistic about the future because of the next generation of problem-solvers like JUST Water co-founder, Jaden Smith, heeding the call to action and creating businesses, technologies, and social movements that alter humanity’s relationship to the planet.
Gore and Smith took the stage together for the first time ever at LA18 to address the realities of climate change. They detail essential reforms for improving our global energy system, discuss the importance of a meritocratic virtual public square, and explore the sustainability movement’s impact on financial markets. Above all, they stress the belief in the power of the greatest renewable resource we have - our political will.

Ten years ago, All Gore predicted the North polar ice cap would be gone. Inconveniently, it’s still there. So lying makes him a wonderful human?

That's a very simplistic viewing of peoples concerns about the overall climate of earth, do humans impact there environment of course, the question then becomes to what extent and what are practical steps we can take to improve that, humans made a decision that got us to this point and we have to make a different one if we want to make a change, to not acknowledge the death grip oil and organized systems of energy control have is the real problem, sure on a personal level we can all make a change but what real life impact will that have on countries like China ? And others?

Al Gore should know. Among his predictions was that the Arctic would be ice-free by 2014. Is he now giving us ten years?

remember when Al Gore in 2009 said the worlds polar caps will be completely gone in five years and now its 2021 and theyre still here. the Earth is more powerful than u think it can definitely handle a flux in CO2 changes whether it be greater or less. Its designed to counter act and adapt. Give earth more credit. It does more than u ever will.

The question is... will we get this done “worldwide” in ten years? The answer is no. Because we don’t have the essential metals to create all the batteries and windmills needed to replace fossil fuels. We don’t have the money to replace every car, truck, ship and aircraft. We don’t have the money to install electrical outlets in every carport in every apartment building. We don’t have the available land to plant trees. And finally, we don’t have the will of politicians to place taxes and encourage consumption reductions , because the economy will suffer.

Yes, thats the reasons i dont believe new technologies and using different sources of energy to live the same way we do now will solve all of our problems.
There will have to be a certain amount of change in how we behave and organize things, what technologies we use and what for. How much exactly will still have to be seen but until then i dont think there can be too much.
*Personally* i think that the assumption that "the economy shouldn't suffer" is holding us back. Ultimately, it is a means to distribute resources in a way that fulfils our needs. The model we use now managed to do that (more or less well, depending on who you ask) for a good while and we should be thankful for that and the progress it brought us. But if new challenges and needs arise that the current economy cannot adress or not as fast as we need it to, we should remain flexible enough to explore if we can organize things in a different way.
Sure, people will suffer if the economy suffers but they also will suffer greatly if we don't adress climate change. My perspective is that we are going to lose our current system anyway, the question is wether we slowly change it under more or less controlled conditions or if it is violently torn from us unprepared.
That is only my personal perspective though and i am aware it could be considered radical and extreme. I just wanted to offer it as food for thought and will aspire to do and explore what makes me feel like i did what i could and hope others will pursue the directions they think are the best.
Do you wanna share your perspective on the matter? What do you think we should do?

      Gewreid
Good stuff. I concur that we will have to change our current system drastically from what we have all grown up with this past century. I don’t think we will volunteer any efforts to gut this world economic system that rewards us such a leisurely lifestyle but instead we will be dragged, kicking and screaming. My grandparents experienced bread lines in the 1930s. I experienced the gasoline lines in the late 70s and my kids experienced the 2007 recession. It’s been over a decade and our false sense of economic security fades a bit more each passing day. We’ve propped up and ducked taped ourselves together in hopes of avoiding the inevitable downturn that lies ahead and the longer we hold on to this imaginary infinite growth paradigm the harder we will fall. The wealth gap, the finite resources, the climate crisis, the social negativity and the political polarization is a sign that shits gonna hit the fan very soon. Unfortunately we sold out on the idea, many decades ago, that we need not to worry about global warming. That we would have a technological solution by the time things became very serious. Well, here we are staring down the barrel of a possible near term extinction that includes every possible life form known to us in our universe. It’s truly a shame that nobody had the balls to sacrifice $$$, profit and greed for compassion, love and a sustainable future.
