He sacrifice his life to pay for our sins so that we would have forgiveness of all our sins past, present, and future, and we will also have Eternal Life, if you believe and accept him.
God's word says, that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus and not by our own effort or works (Ephesians 2:8-9) God given us the faith that trusts him. We are not saved by obeying a list of do's and don'ts, but by grace through faith in Christ. Our salvation is in God's hands.
But we also need works because it shows that we have a genuine faith
