I love how you are keeping the windshield wipers safe from the harsh Utah sun by removing them and storing them, what, under the seat?😆Love you, Hi Walter!
I've got an 86 Dodge Power Ram W150 (baiscally same but the truck version) one key thing I would recommend as a "mod" is replacing the steering shaft (from the firewall to the steering box). Get the one that replaces the "rag joint" as its called and they are prone to failure when offroading. It also replaces the slip joint that attaches to the box with a u-joint. Borgeson makes a really good one. Also Warn manual lockout hubs! Thanks you totally helped me figure out what the random bracket I found in the glove box is for! Its the the power steering pump!! I can't wait to see what you do with the Ramcharger. Love your videos!
wow holly is a trooper didn't even flinch about a wrench to the face. I love when a bolt is stuck like that i bring in Paul's favorite tool and persuade it to come lose love my hammer for tight bolts plus the wrench
I did a bunch of modifications to the 360 motor in my 85 Ramcharger. Headers, intake, new Carter AFB, and Jacobs ignition. The ignition is what finally woke the whole package up and cured all of it's sluggish issues. Specifically opening up the gap on the sparkplugs to match the high energy ignition. That's just to wake the motor up, and it was back in 1995. Today I would use one of the Holley throttle body fuel injection setups, especially if my name was Hollie. That's for the motor, as I said elsewhere, tires and lockers first.
Love this channel so much. Cant wait for Walter getting into wheeling. I really enjoy the content with both of you and looking forward to seeing Walter infront of the camera more often.
First thing I would do is a Borgeson steering shaft. Was the best thing I did to my RamCharger back in the day. Sadly salt and Canadian winters took mine from me. Warms my heart to see this one alive and well.
In a previous video I saw Walter in the back seat with his head up against the drooping headliner. That can be remedied by installing Marine Hull Liner which is a carpet-like material and is made out of needle punch polypropylene. It is extremely easy to cut, fit, and mold to the desired shape or size. Designed to resist mold, mildew, stains, and soiling. Hull liner fabric is easy to clean and will not fray or unravel. Maybe start with the small fixes that make the vehicle street legal and safe. Next, depending on the rules of the competition you are entering, work on areas that transfer power to the wheels (Lockers, gears, suspension, tires, brakes). Much success to all involved in this project.
I love that you start the video by saying hey my lovelies. We used to throw our dinner scraps outside in the woods on the side of our house and vultures would hang out in the trees and wait for them. My mom called them "Her Lovelies."
I’m enjoying the joint effort of RAD & Mischief Maker. Makes life a lot easier combining resources, especially with seperate Camera work which frees up extra people.
Been taking the first test drives with the new 410" stroker small block and 8HP70 eight speed automatic in my '86 Ramcharger 4x4. A few glitches to work through but it's awesome.
Wow! Really nailed yourself there Holly! Had to laugh though as the other day I thought I'd try on my wetsuit I hadn't worn since last winter. I was pulling it up, my hand slipped and socked myself in the chin. Thankfully no teeth were lost in the process! Same thing only different (LOL)! 2 things - cheater bars are your friends and remembering to work to the side (not in line with body parts that can get injured.
I got same color scheme Ramcharger. 86. Its needs quite a bit of love though. Its got a rod through the block for starters. Busted steering column. And who knows what else =D Its a project!
I love that you guys are doing a ramcharger they're one of my favorite 80's SUV's. So speaking from experience the transmissions in 80's Rams are not very good. So long as it doesn't overheat the engines are pretty good. First modification I would make it axle upgrades. If you're gonna be crawling in it then maybe 3 or 4 link it.
The first mods depend on how crazy you're getting with the build. I'd love to see a fuel injected dual snail system attatched to the engine but logically the first step is a proper set of tires and whatever suspension is needed to give those tires a full range of movement. Then step 2 is the heavy metal art project to protect the sensitive bits and mount your winch to. Either way I'll be watching🤙
😂😂😂 Holly I am so glad your ok!! But THAT WAS FUNNY!!!! Welcome to the school of mechanics. You will have those things happen to you where you say… that’s going to leave a scar
Make sure you have the steering box brace, I shackle flipped mine and put another rear leaf set up front gave it 5" lift, put a skid on the tank in the rear, make sure u brace the hatch hinges flexing the body breaks them, make sure body bushings are good, I trimmed front fenders a tad, reinforce the passenger seat hinge she breaks middle of a rough trail😂, regear the stock 3:23s find a set of 392s from a sec gen sport. Lock the vac collar on the front cad axle, oversized aluminum rad with rubber mounts, get a borgenson steering shaft and ditch the rubber rag joint. Basic beginning stuff.
I wish you guys keep it stock but I know modifications are coming up... I have a 77 Ramcharger with a 440 in it and mann they are a beast.. I'll keep watching😊
Back in the day there was a funeral home in Florida where you could drive through and book your funeral. You could even order AND HAVE MADE your headstone, while you waited. They called it Deathtop Publishing.
That’s going to be one of the things I replace on my 79. Although I’m trying to decide if I want to install the serpentine setup from my 99 5.2 magnum I just picked up for my 85 D-150. I did the 360 magnum swap into my 79 in 2012 but I’ve been running the original V-belt stuff. But I’ve had mine off and it won’t be this much of a pain. It was done in an engine stand last time.
About twenty years ago I bought an 83 RamCharger and found out there was a RamCharger Club with a chapter in Alaska. I went to their web site and left a message in their forum asking what would be the best modifications to make. The overwhelming response was, "Leave it alone. Maybe a lift kit and bigger tires but dude, it's fine." About six years ago the clutch went out and I found a 91 with an automatic but it was lifted and it had the tires. And a rack. And a LED bar. And fog lights. And the owner needed money. The 83 was all stock and there were few places I wouldn't go. I look back now and marvel at how lucky I was. RamChargers are dangerous because they're so capable in stock condition that you will eventually go somewhere you shouldn't. Be safe.
I rented one . The set at Harbor Freight looked the same except the color of the case. If it's a tool you use a lot it's good to buy. For rare use I would rent.
First of all, good job on power steering pump installation. Poor Hollie took one for the team.I think that Walter should have gave her a kiss on her forehead after that. I also think that it might be good to put lockers in the diffs.
I am definitely looking forward to this series involving both you and Rudi I need to get caught up on your videos I am behind. In my opinion knowing how you and Rudi are I would put in lockers so you don't get stuck anywhere. I think this will be an interesting Collab and you two work good as a team
No, it does not for your account. If you don’t bring it back, you buy it it becomes yours and you can still go Renton other tools from them. They just replace it in their system I know because I work for O’reillys.
Absolutely true, I've 'rented' many tools from autozone. The rental price is the cost of the tool to purchase. And most places if you tell them you don't plan to return it they will try to get you a brand new one.
What does it matter if it does or not. After watching the video that is the only thing you mention about the video. That is the problem with people today.
Yup, I rented this exact same pulley tool years ago and never returned it and have no issue whatsoever going back to the same O'Reilly. Glad I kept it too because I've needed it a few times since then.
First mod: Lockers. Then tires. Hollie... how's your thumb and forehead? 🤣 That was awesome!! I know... because I've done it myself!! LOL!! I'm glad the pump worked!! So now you can actually steer without spraining a wrist! LOL!!
million dollar question(s) Sliders. Skid Plate(s) Fuel Injection Lockers Gears depending on planned use Wheels & Tires to infinity & Beyond - it's an off road vehicle not every rig is a jeep, but you still empty every pocket
My buddy had the pick ‘‘em up version of this truck you Might as well get use to fighting with this dodge . I guarantee everything you do every bolt you touch is going to be pure hell can’t wait to watch the struggles unfold 😂
Lift/axles. That 9-1/4 will fail at the pinion, and the cad on the 44 will be an issue. Snag a set of 60s out of a diesel w250 or any w350 that isn’t a dually. Rear springs can be used on the front to give a 4~ inch lift. A shackle flip kit should get the rear at the matched height.
In 1981 (1st year of this body style) Dodge entered 3 Ramchargers in the Safari Rally. Malcolm Smith and Rod Hall finished 1st and 2nd in class. 9th & 10th overall. The 3rd truck retired. I watched those! You could hear them coming a km down the road -- it wasn't the engine, it was the multiplicity of rattles as every component on them was loose! Of course they didn't stand a candle to the Audi Quattros that were in the 1983 Safari Rally.
Rock sliders are a good idea. I think suspension fist though, get some height and bigger tires, nothing crazy. And some kc daylighters up top, gotta have old school cool for an old school off roader
It completely depends on what you’re going to be doing with it. 1- fuel injection & headers, get rid of the carb. You will have so much better fuel efficiency, power and you won’t die on inclines. 2- front and rear lockers. Any tire works better with lockers so they all get traction. 3- really good tires 4- 4 link coil over suspension
I wouldn't put much into that stock high mileage engine. Think either Gen 3 Hemi, or stroked out 400 B series big block (383, 400). 440 is good too, but the heavy duty 400 models are a stronger block and they're considerably smaller and lighter than the RB series engines (413, 426, 440) there are stroker cranks, that will get you well over 500 cubic inches. Then look for a multi point fuel injection system. I'd also recommend Dana 70 rear and Dana 60 front, probably easiest found in a '90s heavy 3/4 or 1 ton and lose the drum brakes on the rear end, go disc on all 4 corners. If you go with a Gen 3 Hemi, reach out to Visegrip Garage, he did a Gen 3 Hemi conversion In an early to mid '80s square body Chevy pickup. I imagine it would be a very similar conversion for your Ramcharger. Apparently it worked out quite well.
A lift should be first. And axles if you’re going 8 lug. If you’re keeping the leaf spring set up when you lift it my vote is for SkyJacker. The 6” I used has been fantastic for 10 yrs.
first thing you should do being an 87 is get rid of the shaft lock actuator on drivers side and replace shaft with older model shaft or get the eliminator kit. i had an 81 and with 33s it would tuck them in extremely well. these are extremely capable rigs but lockers and beefy trans should be considered as well as getting the engine cooling system breathing better and engine itself breathing better.
Since you will be going back in to replace that old high pressure line on the pump shortly just change all those fittings to AN style and build hew lines using the Parker field serviceable kit. That way you will be half way done when you need to add hydro assist for the Dodge kingpin D60 you should be dropping in 😊.
The single most important item is quality, off-road capable tires.
I love how you are keeping the windshield wipers safe from the harsh Utah sun by removing them and storing them, what, under the seat?😆Love you, Hi Walter!
Hollie, the video has everything: music that sounds like Chet Atkins, Flat and Scruggs, mechanic work and an adorable dog.
I had a 81 Ram Charger in high school, I miss that truck so much now.
First mod, rubber on the end of the wiper arms. Then clean that engine bay.
Exactly what I was going to say! You were just at the parts store and you didn't get wiper blades?!
Definitely clean the engine and secure wires.
my first Dodge was a 1977 Ramcharger I bought used in 1983.Ramchargers are cool.I'm on my 5th 4th Ram pickup,I've had this one over 11 years.
I've got an 86 Dodge Power Ram W150 (baiscally same but the truck version) one key thing I would recommend as a "mod" is replacing the steering shaft (from the firewall to the steering box). It's going to be great to see this thing fully restored.
wow holly is a trooper didn't even flinch about a wrench to the face. I love when a bolt is stuck like that i bring in Paul's favorite tool and persuade it to come lose love my hammer for tight bolts plus the wrench

I love watching you two work.
I think that the most important first mods are a winch and lift. The lift also includes tires though, so it can be expensive.
Love those RC's! Often an over looked rig. Have fun with it! Excited to see what route you go with this!
Love this channel so much. Cant wait for Walter getting into wheeling. I really enjoy the content with both of you and looking forward to seeing Walter infront of the camera more often.

Lockers. I had a ramcharger 83 model it was a great vehicle. Turned so good in parking lots. I miss that truck.
Love watching 👀 you guys 👍
I love that you start the video by saying hey my lovelies. We used to throw our dinner scraps outside in the woods on the side of our house and vultures would hang out in the trees and wait for them. My mom called them "Her Lovelies."
Was your mom the wicked witch of the west?😂
There is a TV show theme that ''Hello, My Lovelies'' features a lot
in the song, its called Theme from Auntie Jack. Its on youtube.
First mod: Sliders. Protect those beautiful rockers and doors! :)
Agreed!
Sliders for sure. Maybe tires next?
I’m enjoying the joint effort of RAD & Mischief Maker. Makes life a lot easier combining resources, especially with seperate Camera work which frees up extra people.
Two face paint job one side Rudy’s adventure and design one side mischief maker. That would be super cool!
Been taking the first test drives with the new 410" stroker small block and 8HP70 eight speed automatic in my '86 Ramcharger 4x4. A few glitches to work through but it's awesome.
The slo-mo was great :)
I believe a roll cage would be my first choice. Only because of all the class around you. Great content guys thanks for sharing.😊
1 tons and lockers would be my first choice.✌️
Having driven a number of vehicles of that era: The first upgrade you should do is enhanced cooling.
Wow! Really nailed yourself there Holly! Had to laugh though as the other day I thought I'd try on my wetsuit I hadn't worn since last winter. TIP: If you pour the 1 qt bottles with the spout at the top it flows better/smoother
I got same color scheme Ramcharger. 86. Its needs quite a bit of love though. Its got a rod through the block for starters. Busted steering column. And who knows what else =D Its a project!
Plymouth Trailduster was my ride for years.
Lockers are always a good option.
Pick up a set of line wrenches when you return the puller. They will save you a lot of trouble and pain.
Lockers and sliders...
At least tires and a skid plate. This is gonna be cool.😎
FYI...when taking the pump off..go through the pulley with a 1/2 socket and a 3" extension..that is why the pulley has Holes in it...way easier...
The first mods depend on how crazy you're getting with the build. I'd love to see a fuel injected dual snail system attatched to the engine but logically the first step is a proper set of tires and whatever suspension is needed to give those tires a full range of movement. On the topic of "Drive-thru"... before digital photography took over, there were even Drive-thru photo processing shops for your common film formats.
borgeson steering shaft and new rag joint - it will remove the play/wander in steering
😂😂😂
Holly I am so glad your ok!!
But THAT WAS FUNNY!!!!
Welcome to the school of mechanics.

We have to build something balanced since it will still see lots of road miles. But the temptation to go extreme is certainly there! 😈
That ram charger is awesome! Protect the hood ornament at all costs, those things are hard to find.
In Indiana we have drive thru feed stores were you get food for your Farm animals or pets. Ohio has drive thru liquor stores.
Nice windshield wiper. You should have gotten that when you were at O'Reillys.
for first upgrades, I'd say :
1: light bars (kidding🤣)
1: lockers front and rear
2: mild lift
3: tires to fit whatever lift
Back in the day there was a funeral home in Florida where you could drive through and book your funeral. You could even order AND HAVE MADE your headstone, while you waited. They called it Deathtop Publishing.
Sound works fine for me.
Higgins Rocks!!
That’s going to be one of the things I replace on my 79. Although I’m trying to decide if I want to install the serpentine setup from my 99 5.2 magnum I just picked up for my 85 D-150. A good set of tubing wrenches are worth there weight in gold.
Tires first, rear locker second. I'm looking forward for this build. Great that's not another Jeep 😉
Posting just after your question, find out what gears are in the front and rear differentials and if 4:10 or bigger go with bigger tires.
My first ride was a 1978 ram charger boy did I love that ride
My grandpa used to have a ram charger I loved it. I used to drive it with him when I was barely able to see over the steering wheel.
About twenty years ago I bought an 83 RamCharger and found out there was a RamCharger Club with a chapter in Alaska. I went to their web site and left a message in their forum asking what would be the best modifications to make. The overwhelming response was, "Leave it alone. Rudy adds a lot of additional eye candy, metro voice and darlin factor to MishiefMaker that already has plenty on the distaff side.
Awe, the sound of silence.. 😁
great job!hope yer ok been there done that!
Set of line wrenches would make a big difference
I rented one . The set at Harbor Freight looked the same except the color of the case. If it's a tool you use a lot it's good to buy. For rare use I would rent.
Rudy's Adventure & Design
That's RAD
Tires, Suspension upgrade, upgrade brakes. Those 3 in that order.
Find the snorkel!
Never suck hot air from under the hood!
First of all, good job on power steering pump installation. Poor Hollie took one for the team.I think that Walter should have gave her a kiss on her forehead after that. I also think that it might be good to put lockers in the diffs.
My thoughts on build order
Protection (bumpers/sliders
Traction (gears/lockers)
Clearance (lift and tires)
Rock sliders and bumpers
I am definitely looking forward to this series involving both you and Rudi I need to get caught up on your videos I am behind.
In my opinion knowing how you and Rudi are I would put in lockers so you don't get stuck anywhere.
I think this will be an interesting Collab and you two work good as a team

Ya’ll starting a tires shop?! I tend to use a rubber mallet against the wrench instead of pushing or pulling hard. It was an epic moment though🤣
Winch/bumpers and or gears & lockers
There are drive-through marriage places. Especially Las Vegas.
First mod: Lockers. Then tires. Hollie... how's your thumb and forehead? 🤣 That was awesome!! I know... because I've done it myself!! LOL!! I'm glad the pump worked!! So now you can actually steer without spraining a wrist! LOL!!
million dollar question(s)
Sliders.
Skid Plate(s)
Fuel Injection
Lockers
Gears depending on planned use
Wheels & Tires
to infinity & Beyond - it's an off road vehicle
not every rig is a jeep, but you still empty every pocket
After Rudy read the driver's manual and the second most important thing was to not make any sharp turns, I'd say you need a roll bar😂
Lockers and a winch and a set of MTs
I do miss my 79 ramcharger
Higgins is such a sweetie.
Hurts Self
Shakes it off and continues Working
Aye she's a Resilient Scot !!!
😂🤘🏻🏴
replace or get rid of clapt out leaf springs for sure like the build it a lot
In 1981 (1st year of this body style) Dodge entered 3 Ramchargers in the Safari Rally. Malcolm Smith and Rod Hall finished 1st and 2nd in class. 9th & 10th overall. The 3rd truck retired. Driven by Sandro Munardi who was an Italian European Rally champion. Sometime in the mid 80s I came across one of these trucks parked near NYU in New York City. Was kind of surreal.
I watched those! You could hear them coming a km down the road -- it wasn't the engine, it was the multiplicity of rattles as every component on them was loose! Of course they didn't stand a candle to the Audi Quattros that were in the 1983 Safari Rally.
See if I can post a link: i.imgur.com/LVaB6mh.jpg
Rock sliders are a good idea. I think suspension fist though, get some height and bigger tires, nothing crazy. And some kc daylighters up top, gotta have old school cool for an old school off roader
Lift and lockers and some bead locks should be at the top of list other than full service maintenance every fluid and filter
I love a Ram Charger
It completely depends on what you’re going to be doing with it.
1- fuel injection & headers, get rid of the carb. You will have so much better fuel efficiency, power and you won’t die on inclines.
2- front and rear lockers. Any tire works better with lockers so they all get traction.
3- really good tires
4- 4 link coil over suspension
Yup, Holly EFI just bolts right on to the old carb manifold.
this.... for sure this is what you need to do... get rid of that puke carb.. and all the other steps listed
A lift should be first. And axles if you’re going 8 lug. If you’re keeping the leaf spring set up when you lift it my vote is for SkyJacker. The 6” I used has been fantastic for 10 yrs.
The best mod to start would be lockers. I love the content letting people know they can have an adventure without breaking the bank.
Use atf+4 in the power steering system. It works better than power steering fluid. It's what we did at the dealership
Dying over that head smack, sorry that hurt but that was the funniest vid I've seen in while.😆😆🤣🤣🥰😻
This would be an awesome giveaway.
Holly EFI & exhaust on that Ram and then raptor roof and paint the rest
Make this comfy for Walter as a driver, this Ram Charger is perfect for Walter.
On hoses like that pump hose. Tap the flat part of the nut lightly with a hammer and a punch and they will come off easily
first thing you should do being an 87 is get rid of the shaft lock actuator on drivers side and replace shaft with older model shaft or get the eliminator kit. i had an 81 and with 33s it would tuck them in extremely well. these are extremely capable rigs but lockers and beefy trans should be considered as well as getting the engine cooling system breathing better and engine itself breathing better.

I like it..
First mod either tires or like lockers. God bless
And, maybe not in Utah, but we also have drive through liquor stores.
