these were the type of movies my parents were shown back in the north of England - can you imagine how these images must have seen to young parents living in dirty wet crowded england and all this was available for the princely of 10 pound for each adult, us kids travelled free.
Not a mobile phone insight what a delight!
yep now you can't walk through a park without young ladies being glared to their phones... hideous to see... no one interacts.
@@sanctuaryism and men - boomer alert
I love my county Australia and Western Australia my home thanks for the film
The youngest person in this film is 62 today. Most are already dead. How short life really is.
yes ,but this is 60 years ago after all.
Was thinking similar.
its literally the longest thing you do.
Life is long enough, we just live it as if it lasts forever
@@Marzaries "Life's a long song, sadly the tune ends too soon for us all"
Beautiful people, beautiful lifestyle, the way we were.
Unfortunately never will be again
I was 16 in Perth when this film was made. We had a wonderful life with the river, the beach and all you see in this film. Simpler days...yes. Innocent days...yes. But wonderful memories.
It makes me ponder more any encounter with someone in their twilight years, if they would once sit in a park, smiling carefree, enjoying the surrounds and company... we all run the gauntlet. But none of us should forget that where we go, others have already been. I think I'll smile a lot more tomorrow, just a sign of understanding. all shades on the same circle of our lives...
How lovely it must have been to live in Australia in the early 1960s. What a charming and lovely place - free of all the social conflicts and disharmonies that bedevil current Australian society.
not quite..young adults were conscripted intot the military to fight in vietnam.
You're saying this from a white privileged perspective; " free of all the social conflicts and disharmonies that bedevil current Australian society." There were social conflicts ranging from child sexual abuse, alcoholism, domestic violence, homelessness and poverty except you didn't know it.
@@johnpro2847 National service. My father was one of them. Lucky for me he didn't go to Vietnam, but served in RAEME in Puka Victoria.
You do realise this was a form of propaganda to entice British emigration? However, as a child , my memories were exactly as shown…swimming, fishing, bikes and beaches. And freedom, lots of it. Not everyone was so lucky.
Assuming this was made to promote the 1962 Commonwealth games in Perth? We were just an overgrown country town back then! I mean that in a good way!
like everywhere was mostly.
Love the Guy Grey Smith painting at 10:16 Perth hills artist
It was also to attract the "10 pound poms" to settle in WA rather than other states.
So charming. Love Dad wearing a cravat at breakfast then magically swapping seats
Nothing like this now🤔🤷♀️. I remember swimming in the Swan River when it was clear water. The best suit, Birthday. Gosh takes me back. Thanks for sharing 🙌✌🙏
Mum told me stories from when she lived in Freo just behind the Left Bank. She said the water was crystal blue. Full of blue manna crabs and when they went prawning they had to give away as much as they ate.
i still swin in the river
The River may well have been clearer in the past, although as i understand it the brown colour comes from the tannin in the leaves that fall in the river up stream, so the river ends up becoming like a big cup of tea.
The fashions have changed, but the landscapes and those faces still remain.
this looks like paradise on Earth!!
It was and still has a lot of good things going for it
I think it was once.
It was. It isn’t now.
Our weather is still awesome but everything is expensive.
It was until Eric Edgar Cooke
3:11 I remember that very tree next to the water at Crawley Bay! Dad's offices were at the National Parks building just off screen to the right. We had so many picnics down there as a kid. Great memories.
"Mate, the blowies are **shockin'** today......." Cheers from New Zealand :)
I was only in Grade 4 in primary school. Not quite 9 years old. This still pushes my buttons. Dunno why, exactly - maybe just because I was there, even as a very young kid 😗
This was all middle and upper class Perth. The working class was way below this level. I know, I was there.
Absolutely beautiful beyond words. They all certainly were made of stern stuff in those days.
Perth has come a long way, but bits and pieces of this lifestyle still exist today.
All that rhyming was doing my head in. Great images however.
I actually didn't notice for a long time lol
What was with that?
What I noticed was that everyone was elegant, especially the women, elegantly dressed, hairstyled, and graceful
So beautiful...
Perth is a lovely place ..
What a beautiful time.
When life was one giant tea party
Its beautiful back then !

+Charles Dimech Hi Charles, thanks for the positive feedback, we appreciate knowing that the collection is being seen and valued. Many of these films are available on DVD or can be put on DVD by request. We like to get them out there in as many ways as possible.
minus of course the aboriginal heritage, which some of the sport mimics

Thanks Film Australia! Fantastic and interesting historic videos.
Thank you! Most enjoyable viewing.
The hotel at 14.48 is the John Barleycorn in Nollamara, demolished about 12 years ago. I lived close by and it was really busy in the 60s.
zimtuff my cousins lived close by too. Walk to the Nollamara shops with our empty cool drink bottles in exchange for some lollies, shopping centre still there today too. Great simple care free days back then.
I was 3 in 1961, visiting nanna in Nollamara for next 10 years or so. I remember my father going to the Barleycorn

all of those kids are in their 60's and 70's now... and most if not all the adults are dead. 60 years ago. and look at us today. my soul weeps...
Exactly! My soul also weeps. I wa 3 in 1961. The state of the world now is relatively horrific
Totally, 100% agree.
This is the perfect looking world.Always had a soft spot for Perth back in the 1980's.
Brett Wilkinson; Much better in the 1960's👍
I just cannot comprehend the nostalgia for this time. Remember Eric Cooke and his victims? From 1958 to 1963 terrorised the city, killed at least 8 people at random committed another 22 violent crimes. Yes, great times indeed, even the Claremont killer does not compare.

Thanks for making these old heritage films available for viewing. I was born in the early 60's when life was simpler but not always better. Don't listen to the negative replies. Keep uploading these films for the thousands that appreciate them :). These PIONEERS made this country available for all the bludgers that have turned up since and take it for granted. There was NO free lunch for the pioneers like my grandfather in Dalwallinu / Buntine.
Thanks, we will keep uploading and have got many more to come. Glad you are enjoying them. Thanks for the positive feedback.
Mine were at Dalwallinu/Pithara/Wubin too.
Pretty sure that stealing someones country is the ultimate bludging. Looks like your ancestors are the ultimate bludgers, it's a lot easier to steal someones country than work hard in your own.

Thanks Eduardo. We have thousand more films to present here. Please keep watching.
Some times you can have anything you want... except the way things used to be. I just seems the world was simpler and slightly more innocent back then.
Shayne Sim --simpler or just sane?
Yes simple it was, Aboriginals under the Flora and Fauna Act and still not classified as humans; Cold War in full throttle; Homophobes out bashing and killing Homosexuals; Abortions illegal; Marriage to an Aboriginal illegal...oh the good 'ol days when we were bigots and proud of it! Thank humans we evolve :)
Ah yes, back when domestic violence was kept behind closed doors because women had no legal recourse to seek shelter from abusive husbands. And it was illegal to be gay, and black people apparently didn't exist.

Efficient government management, hard work, stunning economic growth, better inclusion. And it will keep getting better.

Hi Jan. No we did not have any of that information, thank you very much for letting us know we will add it to the database for this film. Do you know anything more about the people featured here or the filming that took place?
I was hoping someone knew people in this video.

What year was this made?
+Ferne Callaghan Hi this film was made in 1961. Hope you enjoyed it.
If you think life during this time is innocent and fresh. It means the current lives we living is really shitty.
When people had backyards and little kids could ride bikes in there neighbourhoods without worry
Perth is OK?
12:30 who’s the guy water skiing??
Does the incredible pool at 11:10 still exist?
I'd like to know the answer too.
I'm not even sure where it is ,it was most likely that in a private residence
It looks just like the pool at a house in Beatrice road Dalkieth.
Was Perth lifestyle provincial then?
You would probably have to say - yes. Indeed many would say that most Australian cities at that time were "provincial".
It was certainly isolated. It either 4-5 days by train or 2 weeks by ship to Melbourne or Sydney . Most of the road east was dirt and planes were expensive. But it was great growing up there in the 60s. The outdoor lifestyle and miles of beaches with blue skies and bright sun is what I remember most.
Perth was a hamlet back then and is still is today😂😂😂
Those hats are way more than 9 years old
This film was made in 1961, not 9 years ago!
@16:07 he's got the right idea
before meth
Pretty sure this was shot last week.
From Perth. I bloody wish.
If this was shot last week, everyone in the film has violated federal and council laws, engaged in unacceptable, immoral behaviour, disgusted and offended 99% of the population who saw or even heard about the film, and there would be radical protest calls on worldwide media to have it cancelled immediately while lawsuits are filed for discrimination, defamation, sexist and racist comments.
I'm in the 1% by the way.
Is that Peter Finch narrating?
No not on this film, although Peter did narrate a couple of other films for the National Film Board. He also featured in this film: These Stars Are Mine - 1943. ruclips.net/video/4gfdrq7cODI/видео.html
Yeah, I knew Peter did some narration work for the NFB. Thought the voice sounded a bit like a younger Peter, but never mind. Thank you for the reply.
A bit selective about what is shown.----Where were the footy games? We weren't all so neatly turned out back then----the kid with shoes & socks fishing, for instance. No kid would do that near water.Bare feet or thongs (& yes, they were around in '61)
All the people in the "cultural " part look like they are from Nedlands or Dalkieth, & the bloke having a meal outdoors wearing a cravat!!,There are much better images of Perth in that era, like the "Lost Perth " ones.
Because it was primarily an ad for the "10 pound poms"?
"Another sunny day before the clouds of feminism rolled in."

Could not spot any immigrants/natives except Brits.
Exactly. This was during the time that Australia literally had a white Australia policy which was an actual law that meant that no immigrants were allowed unless they were white.
And as for the First Australians/ Native Australians/ Aboriginals? Yeah the white Australians were racist towards them too.

When was the last time anyone actually saw a black swan here in WA? The only big birds l see now days are pelicans.
Plenty of spots, but localised areas like Riverton Bridge, Attadale foreshore, Nedlands, Point Walter. There's always several broods in tow in Spring between Shelley Bridge and Riverton Bridge, early morning. The baby cygnets are so adorable.
@@tessa1238 I can confirm there were plenty on the Nedland's foreshore circa 2011. My daughter used to chase them yelling "daddy ducks!"

I saw families of them in Matilda bay in Feb 2021. Heaps of places actually, I didn’t think they were rare?
This is before sun screen, how many of these people caught skin cancer? 🤔
A fair few and some will have no doubt died from it as well. Bear in mind though that many of these people will still be alive today, those children being the Boomers and their parents are the Silent Generation.
Lucky me it seems--just watched this lying in bed with no sound. Great old footage taken a few years before I was born. Not too much different growing up in the 70s. Used to peel at least once every summer. One of the most glaring things I found watching this was the complete lack of cultural diversity. No colour to be seen anywhere.
Wasnt it great.*sigh*
Best viewed with the volume turned off. That commentator was starting to make me sick. I see all the snobs from Dalkeith and Nedlands areas featured heavily.
there werent many outer suburbs in 1961! anyway, who wants to see a feature on the current suburban wastelands of Clarkson or Ellenbrook?

@@lordsod69 it's all sugar coated propaganda. You could make one today in Perth and make it look like a paradise on earth.
@@peternagy-im4be If I remember correctly this was produced for the "10 pound poms" ie the British immigrants that were flooding into Australia in the 50's and 60's, so named because that was the original cost of coming to Australia, in fact my mother came over during this period. It's essentially an ad to encourage them to settle in WA rather than other states, so not entirely propaganda as it is marketing.

Lovely place and time indeed! Of course, this was when men "ruled the world" and women were merely decorative. Or reproductive.
-(Gotta say that after 5 mins or so of the narrator's attempts at rhyming, it all became very annoying...)-
The rhyming was uh... quaint 😉 ( I should be kind🙂)
Narrated by John Croyston, a well know TV writer and producer, mostly at the ABC. A poet too - hence the rhyming.... for better or worse.

Not one mention of our First Nation people!! I'm ashamed.... Such a stuck up middle class view of us Sandgropers or was it a lame attempt to show little old Perth's sophistication to the world? Narration and music horrible.
A fair point Lottie. But a film of it's day no doubt and a government propaganda film at that.
@@NFSAFilms Sure, I agree. That was the term for grasping for "government propaganda". And it was the film of it's day. Things have changed as far as culture and class so very much. Thank you
The government films from this time frequently omitted Indigenous people and culture in their films dealing with "general" Australia. Where Indigenous people were included they were regarded more as a novelty and redundant culture. Interestingly, Ian Dunlop, the director of this film would go on a few years later to push the restrictions placed on the government film units and create two excellent and highly regarded series involving Indigenous people and culture; People Of The Australian Western Desert and Yirrkala.

Of course not. It’s idyllic in comparison to most of the other capital cities in the world and it’s also very family friendly and relaxing. I don’t think “exciting” has been the selling point for Perth, it’s got its own appeal, especially in 2020-2021 💙
