  • The nation's commercial and cultural center is Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's enormous metropolis located in the hills bordering the Great Rift Valley. Its National Museum displays Ethiopian artwork, traditional crafts, and ancient fossils, including reproductions of the well-known early hominid "Lucy." The copper-domed Holy Trinity Cathedral, which houses the tomb of the 20th-century ruler Haile Selassie, is a significant example of neo-baroque architecture.
Addis Ababa serves as a significant administrative hub for both Ethiopia and all of Africa. The city is home to both the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa headquarters. Both the European Union and the United States have two delegations in Addis Ababa, one for the African Union and the other for bilateral ties with Ethiopia. Due to its native character and the remnants of the Abyssinian Empire, Ethiopia and its capital city have grown to be a source of pride for the Pan-African movement.
The creation, expansion, and development of Addis Abeba are not tied to colonialism like those of many other African capitals. At the location of a hot spring selected by Empress Taytu Betul, the current city was established in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II.
According to the 2007 census, Addis Abeba's population was 3,147,000, with 1,511,000 males and 1,636,000 women, and an eight percent annual growth rate. A density of 5936.2 people per square kilometer is thought to exist in the city, which is home to 23.8 percent of Ethiopia's urban population. According to Demographia, it is the 106th-largest urban area in the world.
