Nice rig, so since the phone is being held to the cage using MagSafe, I guess your phone cooler can only used when not filming ? I.e. you take the phone out of the cage, attach cooler using MagSafe, then put it back into cage after a bit ?
Awesome video. What's the advantage of setting up this whole rig versus running something like an A7 or another all-in-one mirrorless camera? Is the goal mostly to get up to the 4k/120? Or are there other advantages to using the iPhone specifically? I am a brand newbie.
Very interesting setup, I like this rig and I’d like to definitely build it overtime, I’m going to be looking into recording basketball, does the rig happen to also work with a tripod setup?
Thank you so much for this video. I was all set to go with the Hagibis SSD enclosure, but I think I’ll go with the lower cost option which is the Samsung T7. Cheers.
I ordered the new Smallrig x Brandon Li collab cage. It’s got a built in usb hub, the handles are quick release and can attach at multiple points around the cage. They also slide so you can have them high or low while attached to the same point. The right handle is an enclosure for an M.2 NVME SSD and the button on top will start/stop recording with Bluetooth but also has a wheel for zoom control. It also has a mount for a VND filter which it comes with. Seemed like a way better thought out solution than piecing it out myself. It’s supposed to come in October
Recvd mine last Thursday and a caveat with the kit is that the cable configuration as shown in the promo ads are wrong. Use a Thunderbolt 3 or newer cable that’s capable of 40 gbs and you won’t have a problem with the SSD card…but you still have to get something within SR’s recommendation. Definitely more streamlined than this and the arca Swiss adapter is great!
Yes, that's a good cage system - I went with Neewer's 16 Pro cage because I wanted to attach BeastGrip lenses as well as some others - and Neewer so far seems the only one that is offering a backplate for 37mm thread lens. Also, Moment just launched a kickstarter for their SuperCage which has NATO rails on the sides and top, and arca swiss on the bottom, and a USB-C hub with an SD 4.0 card slot. Overall I think a cage like SmallRig and Neewer offers a lot more variety of options - you can start compact and build out as the shooting situation demands.
Content has been top notch lately Stephen. One of my top tech channels now. 👏 Can't get enough Shortcuts content though. Need a recurring monthly shortcuts live with you and Matthew Cassinelli!
This is a great video, very informative! We are looking at upgrading to the 16 pro max, we use the Smallrig cage in some testing ways, like hanging it out of the car window at 30mph, do you think the magnetic on the moment cage would be strong enough to handle this? Hope to hear back from you :)
Technical question: How many hours can you record continuously with the configuration shown in the video? I need to record at least 3 hours straight in 4K at 60 frames per second, at least two or three times consecutively, for recording conferences and courses. Additionally, I would like to know if the Anker Hub USB-C 555 would allow me to connect a Hollyland Pyro 4K transmitter to simultaneously broadcast what is being recorded on the iPhone 16 Pro Max to a large screen. In summary, I want to know if I can use the configuration you show in the video to record in 4K at 60 frames per second, stream to a large screen at the same time, and even connect Hollyland Lark M2 microphones to record the audio. Is it possible to do all of this with the setup you demonstrate in the video? *This translation was made using an online translator, so if there are any errors, I apologize for them.
I would have to test the hours recorded, but I've seen other RUclipsrs go 2+ hours recording to an external SSD. And unfortunately I don't have that audio transmitter to test.
NVME PCIe 4.0 & 5.0 require more than the 4.5w the iPhone is capable of delivering. I beleive the PCIe 3.0 is ok... you'll still get awesome read/write speeds, way beyond the minimum 450mb/s Apple requires for 4k @ 120fps.
Stephen, great videos. Question though...after buying most of the items here and getting my rig pretty close to action, I'm having issues with the Anker USB hub. Apple seems to think its' not possible to use a USB-C hub with an iPhone 16 / 16pro. And after buying it, plus the anker power pack, an SSD, Rode mic, etc, I'm finding the same thing to be true. Each gadget works when connected to the iPhone directly, but none work when connected through the Anker. How were you able to get it to work?
Stephen thanks for the video - I'm wondering how much testing you've done with the T7 recording 4K120 - in the linked YT video the reviewer / tester is reporting lower FPS - 98-100 and running into issues on longer recordings. As for cages / rigs - I went with the Neewer cage for 16 Pro, BeastGrip lenses... although I'd be tempted one day with Tilta's 16 Pro update on their Khronos cage line. I think Tilta, SmallRig (collab with Brandon Li), Neewer are worth keeping an eye on - and Moment just launched a Kickstarter for their SuperCage. I'd also find it interesting to see if a Gimbal system comes out that has compatible controls for starting/stopping recording and zoom in/out - without requiring their own proprietary app. ruclips.net/video/treCKJcmEgQ/видео.html
Honestly, I did forget that. For ProRes filming I'm usually focused on b-roll and not recording audio. But if you need it, I'd recommend the DJI 2 or Rode Wireless Go II which can record locally on-device and you can sync later, or attach the receiver via the USB hub, which will then record that audio to the iPhone video.
@@sinisterskills17 yeah I don’t know why someone would try to film a video with this thing Feels like a apple-fan-boy jump on without actually thinking it through It’s a literal brick holder and quite frankly stupid if taking motion video
Wow - that is an incredible rig - thanks for all the info on the various speeds and pros/cons associated - proper geek fest video 🙂
Glad it was helpful! Wanted to geek out with this one.

That's correct, can't be on the cage and using the cooler simultaneously.

Love this setup but I would need a hub with a 3.5mm audio jack. Any recommendations?

You're welcome! I've been using the T7 more often as I'm filming 120FPS ProRes
BTW the audio on this was crystal clear!!! U rock!
Appreciate that! Sennhesier MKH416 does the work!
Crazy - I need to order it and try it out! The umbrella part got me, haha.
haha had to include it!

Which m2 ssd Recomendo for that enclosure of small rig?
Can someone tell me how much total it's gonna be for all the accessories including umbrella?

Have you tried the Sandisk Extreme portable drives? On specs alone they look ideal for this. Just wondered if you had an experience trying them.
I hadn't tried with the 16, but used in the past and it should work just as well as the Samsung T7

You bought the same Anker one I linked? And if you test just two things, will that work? Power + SSD for filming?
love your videos - thank you!
What about sandisk extreme portable ssd? Will that work? Its the cheapest option.

Nice! But it took you WAY too long to get to the umbrella ☂🤣
haha thanks for staying till the end 😉

4K120 ProRes. That is not ProRes HQ 422 at 120 fps, right?
Didn’t Apple use a Smallrig cage in the iPhone 16 event tho??
I think so, but the umbrella works in any cold show mount

I wasn't testing for extremely long periods of time, so the other reviewer may be right. I'll have to do more digging!
I mean, this is way overkill so obviously I've to try it now hahaha.
haha gotta do it!
Apple MagSafe umbrella with a polished titanium shaft that magnetically attaches to iPhone seems like a missed opportunity.
tbh would buy

what about the microphone
Seconded. Where’s the mic Stephen?

I shoot with iPhone since iPhone 7 Plus anda that setup its too much you dont need light and and a external monitor in this case less is more.
Now could you possibly be intrigued to try the Insta360 flow Pro gimbal and see how much less gear you’d need compared to this setup? 😂😂
Whoa 😂😂😂
Went ALL OUT
massive iphone rig. not for me.
At this point, with price, size and weight, a real camera is a better option, cheaper, smaller, lighter and better image quality.
I don’t know why people are using this instead of a gimbal. It doesn’t have any stabilization and is really hard to keep the shot steady.
looks cool
I use mine with a tripod when I am at a stationary place like a football stadium but if I'm walking around then for sure I'm using a gimbal.
