My favorite trick for Fallout 4 is farming purified water. A few industrial water purifiers will give you lots of purified water which, in turn, can be used as a form of currency. It's pretty amazing how quickly it works and you can become a "water baron" in no time.

Just be aware that hoarding food and/or water resources will cause your settlement attack chance to increase drastically, which can be an issue early on (or it might be just what you want for farming legendaries on Survival.)
The game can only check your odds and launch an attack on a given settlement once every 7 days, but the total number of food and water your settlement has is one of the multipliers for attack chance each time the game checks. If you have hundreds or thousands of water, the chance of being attacked when the game performs a check for that resource-rich settlement will eventually reach or exceed 100 percent if you don't have an obscenely high defense value.
Here's the actual formula the game uses, so you can see what I mean:
      Attack chance:
(Can only be rolled for a given settlement once every 7 days)
      .
Base attack chance is always 2%
[Note that in the following formula "food" means the food production in the workshop stats PLUS food you have stored in Workshop, and the same is true of the term "water," in that it's checking water production + stored water.]
      Solve for:
      • (Food + water) ÷ 10
      • Add 2 (base chance)
      Answer = X
      (Write down your X value.)
      Next:
      Solve for:
      (Population ÷2) + (defense) = Y
      [Write down your Y value]
(X - Y) = percentage chance of being attacked on any settlement's "roll."
Also note that as far as Vanilla Fallout goes, your odds of a check resulting in "attack" cannot go below 2% no matter what you do. 2% is the minimum.
So you can see how having 30k water will _drastically_ increase your attack chances, and require a ludicrous number of turrets to truly keep it in check.
      Examples:
If you have a settlement with 20 people, 20 food stored, 20 water stored, and 20 defense, your odds will come out negative, so the game will default to 2%.
However, if that same example settlement had 500 water, its odds of an attack go up to 24% per roll.
If you had 5k water in the example settlement, its odds would be up to 474%, which is functionally 100% per roll.
Just something to be aware of.
[Edit - to better reflect that the terms "food" and "water" each reflect production PLUS stored resources in this formula.]

    • @BigAl-tb7ln
      @BigAl-tb7ln Месяц назад

@@NickC_222 I certainly do have a lot of defense there as well. Good to know that water production counts toward attack chances, not just stored water. But I do regularly pick up and distribute water to every vendor I can.

    - Excess food crops (mutfruit, corn, tatos) can be cultivated and turned into Vegetable Starch, which produces the highly sought after Adhesive components for crafting. This is a godsend for when you need to mod/upgrade your gear.
    - Unlock the Scrapper perk early, and unlock its highest tier at level 40. The ability to break down unwanted, modded guns into crafting components can be the easiest way to obtain uncommon materials needed to make the upgrades you want on your weapons. A highly modded assault rifle can net you over 20 pieces of Aluminum.
    - Hospitals are a great place to find uncommon crafting components through junk (microscopes and biometric scanners, and cafeteria trays). I often check hospitals for aluminum and crystals, as well as some rarer materials.
    - Military bases have more automated turrets than other locations, and the scavenged components (Military Targeting Cards) are also something I search for when crafting on settlements and equipment.
    - Enemy power armor CAN be acquired for yourself. Either by being a skilled pickpocket and using stealth, or by shooting the fusion core on their back until it breaks. As soon as the core is gone (or forcibly detonates), the enemy will be ejected from their power armor, and it becomes as easy as inserting one of your own cores into the back port to claim it for yourself.
    - If you leave power armor inside one of your settlements, it is imperative that all fusion cores should be removed from vacant suits. In the event that your settlements get attacked, the residents will try to claim an available suit in order to protect themselves. If armor pieces break while in their possession, they will end up buried inside of their inventory.

    (1) Ballistic weave - can be put on some hats and lots of the clothes you can then wear under full sets of normal armor. Sets a good base for when you are focused on legendary effects for the rest of your armor rather than its defensive capabilities.
    (2) Linking settlements - it can be a REAL pain if the settler you send is the one who is the originator for settlement quests, sending you running all over to find the guy to tell you to go to Backstreet Apparel for the 300th kidnapping rescue. The best way to solve that is to hold off linking settlements until you get the robot workbench and then link them up using Graygarden as a hub (robots tank settler happiness as they are "fixed" at a value of 50 and thus average your rates way down). Robot provisioners not only won't be at risk of being a quest giver, they are easily upgraded into real threats to keep the roads clear of random threats if you have the materials and perks to upgrade them with.
    (3) Companion equipment - they consume ammo and usually are not worth it. Strong, however, can be massively improved if you give him a maxed out Rocket Sledge or similar melee weapon with more damage than his normal sledge. A rocket bat for post-synth Curie is worthwhile. Otherwise, there isn't much reason to equip them. You can upgrade Ada, Cogsworth, and pre-synth Curie into super-robots if you wish. That said, equipping settlers can be a huge boon to clearing settlement attacks quickly - especially since they only need one round in their inventory to shoot forever with anything except missiles and nukes, just like enemies. Armor can increase the time they fire before they "sit down" (they can only die if you murder them). Give them your best full autos and fast shooting heavies (miniguns, gatlings, flamers) and they will tear through attacks faster than turrets (you still need the turrets for the defense ratings). If you are using humans to link settlements, definitively give them your spare miniguns and the like to keep roads clear.
    (4) Hacking/picking - you can also set up a robot to do one of those for you.
    (5) VATS spamming isn't a hint people need. People who play the game either do it by reflex in short order or swear off it completely.
    (6) Idiot Savant can, sometimes, give you a huge XP boost if you run it with a full IN build - but if you are running a high IN build (and you always should), you likely are leveling fast enough. It feels great when you hit the lotto on a big quest turn in (and if you are willing to save/reload to cheese those turn ins it can make some big jumps on story quests), you give up XP in the form of level (perks) to get it and the level curve is pretty sharp in the game - meaning that it won't really get you massively higher in level, just get you up there a little bit faster. Also, having it pop is one more annoyance (there are too many pop ups as is, especially for things like critical builds).
    (7) Ammo in guns - yup. That one is totally legit and especially useful for things like miniguns with huge magazines.
(7a) Companions as pack mules - all but the dog can be infinite storage if you fill their inventory and then command them to pick up things or check containers you dump things into.
    (8) Water purifying - the more excess you build, the more will be dumped into your storage, but you need to clear the workstations of it regularly to get more (you can put it into normal non-linking storage to keep production high). That is also the case for crops and junk if you have settlers producing those. Thus, you shouldn't build junk stations at a place where you store the junk you link to other settlements (Sanctuary, etc). Caging cows for jet production and crops for adhesive production also make for XP farms as well as caps.
    (10) If you really care about chems, help the Nuka raiders take over the Commonwealth. Make one max-population settlement with max food production that doesn't have any necessary population members to be the slave-settlement which can feed all of the raider settlements (20 settlers making 120 food will keep all your raider settlements going so long as you don't give the raiders jobs - as the population stops growing at a certain number of slackers). Then you can put chem fridges into your settlements and they produce chems like mad (and you are only limited by how many you can afford the materials to build). Combine them into super chems if you want to use and get XP for a junkies build.
    (11) Max your stats to 10 before picking up the Bobble heads if you want base 11 stats. Also, if you take a chem that lowers a maxed stat temporarily that you have at base 10, you can use the SPECIAL book to take that one higher (base 12 with the Bobble) - without duping cheats required for 1 stat.

One corollary to that which I recently realized is that once you're in your power armor, any armored clothing you're wearing is effectively 'unequipped', even though it doesn't show up that way in Inventory. That is, it's not counting toward your stats. Placing that stuff in a footlocker before going back to battle / explore, along with any other heavy items you won't need for the excursion, will increase your carrying capacity, especially if you're wearing a lot of heavy body armor. Same goes for any heavy weapons you probably won't need.

If you’re gonna mention companions carrying your extra gear, you might also mention that they can carry an essentially unlimited amount weight-wise. Once they cannot hold any more when you trade with them, simply direct them to pick up stuff from the ground, same as you would have them pick a lock or whatever. You can do this as many times as you like. I usually wait until I’m encumbered, then drop all the heavy stuff I’m carrying like weapons or large stacks of heavy scrapped stuff such as steel, and then tell them to pick it up. There is a limit, I think it’s based on number of items, not weight, but they can carry way more weight than you’d expect. Won’t work with Dogmeat, but any human-ish companion can do it.

    When it comes to supply lines, I have found one configuration that works for me is the following;
    - finish the Automatron DLC first
    - set up the robot work bench in Gray Garden and using that and the one in the Mechanist lair, make all the supply caravans there.
    - use Gray Garden to supply all settlements on the west side of the map, and the Mechanist lair for all the ones on the east side. Make sure to have both connect to Taffington Boathouse so they share between each other.
    - this creates two hubs and because you are using droids, you can equip them with heavy weapons and armor very easily. Without cheating or using an exploit, you are limited to the max number of settlers per settlement. Using this means creating a lot of robots, which would impact the happiness rating of the settlements...except for the two I use here, as they already have robots present.
    Good luck.

Here’s another hot tip, Scrapper is goated. Need screws? Take a gun you got off some random dude and break it down for screws, steel, and gears. You can break down armor too with it. Good way to get junk if you’re selling water for caps, so you don’t have to sell random people’s equipment
Edit: also if you don’t have gun nut for whatever reason you can get upgrades for you guns by taking random guns with upgrades and giving them base upgrades. This will give you whatever part that gun had and you can slot it into your real gun. So if you find a 10mm with a suppressor and you want it, give that gun a base muzzle and put the suppressor on your gun. You can get pretty much every upgrade this way, though it’ll be slower then just upgrading it yourself

I think such people also love solving complex puzzles. I'm not one of those - I'm among the others who find it fun to do subsequent playthroughs in the most efficient way possible. ;-)

A tip I have never seen is putt up a couple off scavenging stations early in sanctuary(and if you have settlements with people not working) they can net you a lot of junk and allow you to ignore a lot of worries about resources. An additional thing, if you are going to be doing a lot off weapon mods make sure you pick up bones to make cutting fluid too make oil gathering easier. Also mutfruit corn and tatos with that purified water that becomes an endless resource that you won't know what to do with to make endless adhesive. Biggest thing I have figured out is don't have 5 intelligence, if you pick up idiot savant it is the slowest levelling possible and if you are going a high intelligence build every point above 10 drastically increases the chance off idiot savant due to the chance of it triggering is the same as if it was 10. Also even if you don't want too put a lot of work into settlements pick up local leader, set up a couple with very good water and food generation then just make some with like 10 scavenging stations and have infinite of pretty much every crafting resource. Last thing for new players that I have to say is scrounger is the third best perk in the game behind idiot savant and damage perks, best income generation perk and it gives you plenty of ammo to remove that worry quite early.

Adding on from the first tip about Ballistic Weave: If you want to still wear regular armour with your Ballistic Weave clothing, you have to be mindful of what you decide to put Ballistic Weave on as only about 4 or 5 outfits still let you wear all 5 armour pieces on top of it. You can also double-up on your Ballistic Weave stats by putting Ballistic Weave on a hat as well.
Also, the random location chosen for Mercer Safehouse that you must do in order to get Ballistic Weave is actually level dependent, so if you want an easier location then do the first few Railroad quests at a lower level. No one really wants to deal with Outpost Zimonja or the Lighthouse, let's be honest!

My *_TOP TIPS_* (especially _Survival Mode_ )--->
--> _Codsworth_ is available as a companion without first needing to free *Preston* . Simply enter _Concord_ far enough that Preston and the Raiders start fighting, return to Sanctuary, and he can be hired. Taking him along to free *Preston* can give some _affinity boosts_ . _Codsworth_ will give you a Purified Water on a continual basis just by talking with him, making him a solid companion for _Survival Players_ .
--> *_Need Caps?_* Stop at nearby *Abernathy Farm* , under the Power Pylon. Grab the 9 Melons, then speak with the daughter _Lucy_ . Keep picking the top dialogue choice about caps as currency. This will trigger an Easy speech check, and she will offer to buy Melons for 5 caps instead of 3. She can buy every Melon you have, on an ongoing basis, which can be lucrative if you turn Sanctuary into a Melon farm. However, if you make the Farm a settlement, she stops buying them.
--> *_Survival Players_* , besides planting *Tato* , *Mutfruit* and *Corn* for _Adhesive_ , plant *Razorgrain* . Cook *1 Razorgrain /1 Dirty Water* to make rad-free _Noodle Cups_ . They lower thirst one level, and hunger half a level. Check wandering vendor _Trashcan Carla_ and _Trudy at Drumlin Diner_ , South of Concord. Or find randomly as loot.
--> *_Weapon and Armor modifications_* can be _stripped and swapped_ onto your better gear. You can _remove armor mods_ for free, but you will have to _build a new gun mod_ from components. Even without Gun Nut, you can build the base level gun mod, which will put the previously attached modification into your inventory, and put onto your new hotness.
--> _Survival Players_ should build *15 more water supply than they have settlers* , minimum. Take out the water from the Workshop *every day* , and store it separately in another container. New Purified Water will be added every day *_if_* there’s little to no water already in the workshop. If you build a large enough water purification operation, a huge amount can get added daily. Use this for your travels, or stockpile, and sell the surplus.
--> _Survival Mode_ features *Diseases* , acquired numerous ways. You can take *Antibiotics* , visit a *Doctor* , or *wait* until they go away eventually. Each disease has _different durations_ , lasting from *2-7 days* . The most debilitating are _Weakness_ (receive +20% damage), and _Infection_ (take damage over time, though it won’t kill you, will leave you with a sliver of health). These two diseases take *2.5 days* to go away. Find something safe to do, like decorating Sanctuary, or sleep it off. Sleeping causes a _disease check_ , so you might get sick again, but anything is better than Weakness or Infection. *Early game* , when resources are tight, you might be better off saving Antibiotics just in case for the debilitating diseases, and living with the others until they go away.
-->Want to play _Survival Mode_ , but aren’t sure what starting SPECIAL to use? I’ve found the first 10-12 levels to be the hardest, and it’s worth going for strong combat skills first, and then flesh out your build.
*Melee Builds* , get _Rooted_ (STR9) and _Blitz_ (AGI9) immediately. *9,1,4,3,1,9,1* _(Book END)_ .
*VATS Guns* get _Penetrator_ (PER9) and _Concentrated Fire_ (PER10). *1,9,3,3,3,7,2* _(Book AGI)_ . You’ll get the *Perception Bobblehead* when you free Preston, so have a point saved, and put into Concentrated Fire mid-rescue.
--> _Survival Mode_ players should seriously consider not using Power Armor. _Swimming_ is Survival’s Fast Travel. You’ll get around much faster and safer. *_Aquaboy/girl perk_* will save you a ton of time! Without spoiling, the game gives you a quick means of crossing the map as you do the main story, if you dabble with the *Brotherhood of Steel* .
--> _New Players_ : *Idiot Savant* isn’t a good choice for first timers. Enemies scale with you. You need to have good gear to survive, and easy and fast XP can leave you without enough time to explore and find good gear before the bad guys start hitting even harder. *You’ll get plenty of levels, faster than you think, even at 1 INT* . Growing powerful isn’t only a matter of levels. Having 1 INT will give you plenty of time to find what you need to survive. *You’ll be stronger if you have great gear when you pop your next level*. Take it easy, don’t rush, go slow, and you’ll be better for it.
--> _Pass every speech check_ with *11 CHR* , 100%! Low CHR builds, don’t fret: assemble a 3-piece _CHR set of clothes_ . *Hat/glasses/suit* , for _+4_ . Most *Alcohol* adds _+1_ . Find *Daytripper* _+3_ . Better yet, craft *Grape Mentats* at a Chemistry Station _+5_ . There’s other ways, but with these, that’s a +13 buff already.
*Bonus!* Your companion will come to your side and stay there if you crouch.

I seem to remember equipping my supply caravan NPCs with super heavy weapons. If I remember correctly you could give them the nuke launcher and one mini nuke and they would be wandering the wasteland destroying anything that took a shot at them. I also went overboard zigzagging trade routes all over the place so I'd always had backup close by.

#1 - Ballistic Weave is obscene. At the final level (Mk. 5; Armorer 4) you can get 110 ballistic/energy armor on a clothing item and some hats. So, 220 before adding any actual armor. If you're playing a stealth build - this is just amazing. #7 - Arcjet is often used by players to "farm" fusion cells (laser weapon ammo) as the synths are near-infinite so long as you stay out of the room and let Danse play with them. Main issue is that depending on your machine, the game starts deleting corpses to free up RAM. #11 - Caltrops are often overlooked and underrated. They act as mines and are a great way to eliminate smaller, annoying enemies (mirelurk hatchlings, for example). Just be sure to clean up after yourself - I had Preston go from liking me to hating me because he ran across a field of them. :(

    • @blucolife

You can have virtually unlimited carry capacity as long as you have a companion (whom isn't Dogmeat). I found out that, despite your companion having a full inventory, they will still pick things up if you tell them to. You do this by engaging with them at a distance so that a target cursor appears, and then you can tell them to do something (go somewhere, sit/interact with something, etc.). You can also tell them to pick up items/loot bodies, and they will do so despite being over-encumbered themselves. Piper likely has thousands of pounds worth of inventory on her for me and is a walking inventory through which I can make a killing when I make my rounds on merchants!

It is not enough to remove the fusion core from your power armor to prevent npc's from "stealing" them. I found Trashcan Carla in one of power armors and I couldn't get her out of it. Trashcan Carla sometimes sell fusion cores and she will use them to enter your power armors.
My sulotion was to park my power armors in my private house and lock the doors using console commands (click door/container and write "lock 1")... also place your power armors a bit away from the outer walls (npc's can reach through walls). But I don't think it's 100% safe since npc's can spawn inside your house when you return to the "cell". I also lock my personal containers so npc's don't take weapons/fusion cores from my personal weapons locker.

Funny, I began a new play-through on an old laptop after the last one I got the fans bearings crapped out (new tech is buggy and has poor quality). On it I had installed Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Skyrim SSE. They’re all having functional mods working. Since it’s running the Win 8.1, I don’t connect it to the internet for obvious reasons. It’s a perfect time capsule of games I love.
So I’ve begun a new run. Playing on Survival-difficulty: hunger, thirst, sleep, diseases, fatigue, and no fast travel.
Edit. The perfect tip - unlimited cargo capacity on your companions, point at them and use the ‘E’-key, point them towards containers, props/loot etc. If you only use point and loot, their inventory becomes infinite storage.

  • @ArcturosMensk

    1. Companion can be overloadedby giving them a command to grab the loot. Very useful as long as you can't fasttravel when overloaded. 2.If you have some settlements: Build this Brahmin drinking tub. Brahmins in the settlement produce fertilizer. Fertilizer can be used to produce explosives and drugs. Drugs in mass production (Jet) grant XP when produced and a readily available exchange good for expensive goods at the merchant.
    3. use the dismantle perk and get lots of resources by dismantling loot weapons.

Don't forget to periodically remove the water from your workshop storage and into a container if you're not going to sell it right away. There is a limit on your workshop and it won't gain any more units of purified water if you've met it.
It usually stops gaining water at around 400 units for me.

If you want to arm your settlers with the best equipment in the game, you only need to give one unit, same with grenades. So I farm 999 water on Sanctuary Hills doing industrial water purifiers and medium generators, you need 1 point on Science! perk (sanctuary can be empty and will still generate purified water for you, max selling price per unit is 16), build weapons dealer level 3 and I buy all automatic plasma rifles from the vendor. Settlers can have infinite ammo if it's not missile or mini nukes, their accuracy to hit enemies are based on weapon's accuracy (weapons with long scope is more accurate than stock weapons).
So my settler's load out will be:
x1 automatic plasma rifle (preferably with scope) + x1 plasma cartridge + x1 plasma grenade, make sure to press T to equip for him (if they're provisioners, doing supply lines I try to give spike/cage armor, because he will walk between 2 settlements, if the enemy is too strong the supply line will be cut and the provisioner will stay on the ground the same way as a companion does when he's low HP).
At the start you don't have plasma weapons so try to give automatic weapons, more shots = more chances to land shots = more damage on invaders.
There's 4 items in the game that is essential to farm until late game: aluminum, nuclear material and the 2 fiber (fiberglass and fiber optics):
Aluminum: essential to upgrade mid/late weapons, fix your power armor, etc (TV dinner tray, surgical tray, cake pan all gives +3 when scrapping, aluminum can +2, aluminum canister +2).
Nuclear material: make powerful generators and late game weapon improvements (wood blast game +1, biometric scanner +2, radioactive gland +2).
Fiberglass: late game weapon improvements and laser turrets (Rat poison +2, abraxo industrial grade +2, telephone +2, aluminum canister +2)
Fiber Optics: late game weapon improvements and laser turrets (Microscope +1, biometric scanner +1)
This will cover settlement management, what kind of junk is rare and good in mid/late game so you can farm since the start and hidden mechanics on settlers, hope it helps your journey on the Commonwealth.

Big thing about Idiot Savant, don't max the perk out. When you max it out it changes the XP bonus from 5X on anything to 3x ONLY on kills within a short period of time, removing the 5x from everything that isn't a kill.

    • @munky342
      @munky342 2 месяца назад +1

The way it reads to me is that whenever you get the 5x bonus xp, you also then get 3x xp for kills for a short amount of time.
An extra effect, rather than an effect that overwrites the previous.

    • @jblizzyy
      @jblizzyy 2 месяца назад

@@munky342this is correct, whenever the random xp bonus occurs with the perk maxed out, it will always be 5x, with an additional 3x effect on any kills within 60 seconds of receiving the random bonus. The 3x bonus for kills is independent of the 5x bonus, meaning the 5x bonus is only applied to random selected action that gained xp, and the 3x bonus is only applied to kills performed within 60 seconds of the randomly selected action

    • @kevak1236

The most 'complete' faction setup is keeping the railroad, BoS & Minutemen alive while destroying the Institute. That's the only way to have 3 factions surviving I am aware of. It's a bit fiddly on where you have to jump questlines and how to handle Danse's quest so best to look for a guide. Not sure how these interact with the raider faction in the DLC though.
