Six Wheel Drive~Plowing Big Drifts

- We have not been getting much snow this winter so I started rooting around and found some footage I overlooked from a big storm we had last March 2015. When it stopped snowing that day, the wind made for some big snow drifts. In one area the drifts were packed so hard that my snow plow would just ride up over the drift and took me quite a few attempts before I was able to break through them. I know a vee plow would have been better for getting through the big drift in the video but, you make due with tools at hand. And it was still faster than going all the way back to the plow shed to change plows. Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!
Snow plow videos; my new addiction.
Yep, Bring back Memories of when I worked for the state of Iowa Highway Maintenance for 13 years, I moved a lot of snow in those years. You never knew how much snow you were going to get, the weather would call for inches of snow and get missed completely and on the other hand, I seen 8 inches of flurries before. We first had gassers and the big trucks were diesel, Years later we got all diesels. I worked there from 1978 to 1991, the first sand boxes we had were PTO drive, toward later in the 1980s all the trucks had tailgate augers and spinners (Sanders).
Nothing like the power of moving snow!! Been doing it for 23 years love it
It can be fun for sure! I just found out today I got a brand-new Mack truck to plow with this winter so I can't wait to plow some snow!
JimHowDigsDirt I have a 2017 Western star ten wheeler. Big cone pushes some snow!! Congratulations on the new truck. Mines so much nicer than the 1976 Oshkosh six wheeler I used to drive. Was a fun truck in the country roads!!
The guy at 4:37 is like "fuck me, I just spent 5 hours digging the driveway out..."
I know! I feel bad when I do it, but there's nothing else we can do as all our plows angle to the right.
JimHowDigsDirt can tell you've done this many times you know how to not break shit. Taking your time is usually faster case in point.
Russiarulez he looked up, leaned on his shovel with his hand while shaking his head silently saying, "and the fucking plow comes..."
I live on a highway and a plow goes by every 1/2 hour, I don't even bother with the last 10 feet to the road
When it comes to snow plowing Jim is in the big leagues. Deep snow requiring professional machinery and operator. Thanks for sharing. All the best!
Right on! Thanks for watching!
About best high speed deep snow removal video I've seen 👍
Power and momentum are the perfect combo
Felt like I was in cab of Truck
Love Scenery..!
Glad you liked it! Hope you come back for more rides!
I know what you mean, Jim, Our season was cut short too, around 17 February, after getting some decent snowstorms a couple times a week. Thanks for another great vid!
Sometimes it just takes a measure of Momentum, sometimes it takes Brute Force, Most often it takes Tons of Tenacity but it ALWAYS takes the proper Machine for the job and an Operator that knows the Machine Intimately. That would be you, Jim.
And a shit ton of Diesel fuel. 😂
You do with what you have and you did a good job...Safe driving kid...
That truck is a weapon. Must be nice to get the equipment you need for the job :D
I enjoy my job! Thanks for watching!

Great video especially with real action sounds and not stupid music! Pushing snow is a science and is rewarding! Not always fun unless it is on your own driveway!
Glad you enjoyed it! Snow season is coming fast so hit that notification button.
That trucks sounds pretty damn powerful!
Fun to watch this video and compare the american system to the one I am used to using were I live
This is awesome. Loved these since I was a little kid. Fun watching you go through the gears. Must be scary as shit when you hit something under the snow.
Good to see someone knows how. Plowed snow with big cats but way slower then this ! Still have had some scary times lol West Coast Canada in the mountains lol
Thanks! I bet you would have some scary times plow through the mountains!
I guess that's why you don't pass a snowplow on the right.
Holy! That drift at 5 minutes in.. Get's like that up here in northern Maine. 96+ inches this year. It's been melting these last few days. :D Stay warm Jim! Great video's as always, I enjoy watching what you do. Safe travels.
Thanks Bryan! We had a few weeks of steady snow but then the temperatures went up and the snow is almost gone now. It feels like April for the past week.
That elevated roadway in open country looks like a perfect recipe for big drifts.
Same kind of truck plow's the secondary roads here in Pennsylvania
Very nice truck and set up; it really throws snow well there JHDD. Merry XMAS
Sounds like the machinery isn’t even aware of the snow.
I just love listening to that old Cat purr!
I made my comment after about 4 minutes or so (before the big drifts) . Mea culpa 😞.
Hey, it’s snowing outside. Catch the drift? Lol
Great job, but you need a higher front plough and by the video can't tell the angle of the carbides to the pavement to whether you could roll the plough back so the snow would not ride up as much. Excellent work though, miss though winters.
Nice, I liked listening to that turbo!
Me too! I kinda miss that on my new truck!
I remember the day when plows like this plowed our roads.
Plowed snow since I was a kid in the 60s Truck, Grader, loader Upper Midwest never seen snow plows with turf ties and no chains trying to plow snow.
welcome to canada. lol he may have on the spot chains, thats about it
this is where they still need the V plows
I know what you mean! It would have been awesome to have a vee blade for some of these big drifts on my route that day, but the angle plow was the better choice 99% of the roads I was plowing. It was a lso a lot quicker to do this section this way than go all the way back to get my vee plow. Thanks for the comment!
Man, that old girl got some serious power very cool video, thanks for sharing.
Didn't have as much fun this year as last. Checked your site several times hoping for some sideways pushing from that Western Star and none was to be found. Well there's always next year. Have a good summer.
Snow plow Great!
Snow removal in Japan is also amazing.
Please watch it.
That looks like a lot of fun. And a satisfying days work, since you're opening roads for people. Nice video, thank you.
Thank you! It is fun when you have lots of snow to push!
Love it. That rig is a beast
Jim it looks like you need a vee plow to break thur.
Yeah, that would have been better for this section of road. The snow was so hard packed from drifting that the plow just kept riding up over the drifts in spots.
Love plowing videos
Thank you show us this video n without you guy us citizenship can't get out to get grocery 👍
And the number of projects that I can tackle in the winter dwindles because of the darn cold. At least I got more done in 2019 than in 2018.
Hopefully 2000 will be even more productive for you! Thanks for watching!
Hahaha .... "hood ornament" pops up @ 6:47
Stan Patterson
Stan Patterson!
that goes fast wow.
Always better to have your plow ride up rather than your tighty whities.
Fer sure!
JimHowDigsDirt
Just me but I'd put a little more down pressure on the wing brace
I'm still looking for my mailbox !
I just came across this :D Really well done.
I'm a ''Mr. Plow'' myself but winters are not as they used to here in Sweden. I would consider using some chains on that baby, given the amount of snow you get ;)
Cheers
Thanks Joe! We always carry tire chains on our trucks in case of emergency. They do come in handy at times, especially when we get freezing rain!
@@JimHowDigsDirt cool. I personally drive with spikes from best grip. Keeps the machine from sliding.
Its a thankless job but much appreciated. No V-Plow?
Western Star...last vestiges of The White Motor Company. Best trucks built on the planet
Seems like nearly all general-purpose trucks use components made by specialty manufacturers. I bet that the same combination of engine, transmission, transfer case, and axles on this truck can be specified on many other truck brands.
5 ton with a plow.
88M: "I got this"
CC: "did you PMCS the truck." (Bump grind pop noises)
88M: "ummm yea?"
Enjoyed watching. But one thing's for sure, if you had drifts produced in -40 C temperatures, you'd have way more difficulty. Wind blown ice crystals pack like concrete.
JHDD, I notice none of your trucks have a back-up alarm.
Looks like the area of the town of Knox meets the Schoharie county line in N.Y.
Perfect for hu... i mean zombie killing machine. ;)
Moving some snow, very cool video. How fast do you think you were going? Thank you for sharing. God Bless from Phoenix.
Most of the time we are plowing between 40 and 60 kmph. I was moving a lot slower than that when trying to wing back the big drifts!
How do you know where the road is?
I just close my eyes and hope for the best, lol.
Got the wrong type of plow on there. You need a v shaped plow
This winters been pretty lame the odd salt run and little bit of scrapping for Halifax no need for the big toys
this is a job for a walter snow fighter !
nice movie 10/10
V plow would be handy in this situation
Sure would!
Have to get a western star. Would have ran straight through that drift bank. Why is drifting snow always hard as a rock? Snow plow drivers know
Oh by the way do you ever do out by Caribou island that would be some pretty awesome footage
Lindro 889 Dansa
What make and model and year is this beast
It's an 2005 Western Star six wheel drive with a Caterpillar engine.
Real snow plow
Looks like you need a vee plow on your truck.
I have one just never had it on this day.
Are you with Nova Scotia D.O.T?
Hi from Dartmouth Jim. I just subbed your channel its awsome!! Where are you up in Cape Breton?
Hi Quentin! I work out of the MacLellans Brook plow shed in Pictou County.
what is your tip plowing speed, and how fast have you plowed?
the dude at 4:39 lmao
dont think the one way is set right???? shouldnt ride up and over the drifts needs to be tipped more to cut
In reality that would be a 10 wheel drive correct?
Six-wheel drive (6WD or 6×6) is an all-wheel drive drivetrain configuration of three axles with at least two wheels on each axle capable of being driven simultaneously by the vehicle's engine. When it has ten - with two pairs of ganged "dual" wheels on each rear axle as on this Western Star - all are also driven but the 6×6 designation remains.
Where where you all this time
That snowplow is used for roads or highway's, and not railroad tracks?
Richard Whitefish there are train plows for that
10 000 subs is close:)
JOB FOR A ROAD GRADER
Foxbrook Rd, Nova Scotia
Correct! Just past Mark Road!
that's the guy you just plowed in hahaha Just Kidding. Like the videos Sir!, Merry Christmas and happy new year from Minnesota!
does anyone know were this place is?
Ruben Ayala Pictou County in Central Nova Scotia
No, because it's a secret!
good video that CUMMINS sounds good
It is a C15 cat! Sister to this truck in my town, live half hour away from Jim!
It's a CAT Robert, but it do sound good.
550 cat
That is like a mini snowplow on the front of the truck.
What plow are you running?
Michael Warren@ '!?
0
mpg? $s? Wait 'till July?
Last nights shift with a lot of heavy pushing burned 340 litres in a 12 hour shift! Not good mileage but she was working hard!
POOR TRUCK ILL BE WORE OUT IN 4 YEARS
It's 13 years old and is good as new. They will be upgrading to a newer truck before we ever were it out.
Ayuh - we swapped sander bodies onto 4 of our oldest dump/plow trucks because they tend to be more reliable & easier to repair than most of the newer trucks. No DPF/DEF/Regen/EGR issues to contend with in the older trucks. And sure enough, those 4 are never down for powertrain/chassis issues; just cutting edges, toe chains on the wing, post cables, and wing struts & brackets a couple times throughout the season. Those trucks with their old CAT engines just keep going and going.
@4:37 LOL
Not a happy camper lol!
Where is this please ?
REAL SLOW Pictou County in Central Nova Scotia
4:37 "fuck my life"
You pretty much read his mind, lol!
I had a friend die because a snow plow driver was plowing to fast and slow came over the plow drivers windshield and killed him sitting in his car at the end of his drive way with the wing of the plow. When I seen that snow come over your windshield that's telling me your driving to fast.
In Jim's defense, he had that truck stopped in the blink of an eye a moment after that one time when he lost his view of the road. And he had already had a clear view before that happened so he knew that no car was in his path. I saw nothing unsafe here.
just keep plowing don't make drifts.
Don't you feel cool brother
Ha ha ten wheel drive?
NAMELESS HEROES LIKE FIREMEN AND COPS!!!
Thank you!
That blade needs to be a couple of feet taller and the width of the road. We have an old D9 at our farm we use for clearing the roads, with home made extensions. Never had any drift that put much of a load on it. Like pushing air compared to dirt.
This plow is a throwing plow, what could be used here is a pushing plow.
need guns n roses playing while guzzling half a gallon of hot coffee and plowing
Was this truck a 18spd? 550 cat motor? C16?
4:35.... This is why I drink
You read his mind, lol!
Need a snow blower for this.
Yeah...mounted on a big front end loader!
I'm wondering why you use that type of low wing plow on the front of your trucks? With the type trucks you run it seems like a high lifting wing plow would be much better. It's what is used here in Michigan and surly we get less snow than you. They lift the snow so high and throw it so far it rarely builds a bank like seen there. Snow is plastered on the trees about 12' up the trunks. These trucks run between 40 and 45 mph and use their grader blade and spread salt all in one pass. I enjoy your plowing videos. It looks like it could be fun, but stressful. I think a novice operator could get in a mess in a hurry with that wing blade on the side. Here the road commission is responsible for replacing all the mail boxes they take out.
Hey jimgo49 ! Why not pick up the garbage also ? Michigan slackers....
I am surprised they do not have some sort of drift buster plow put together that works to build traction for a truck like a 'dozer can get from loading the blade. That plow could just blast through the center where the drifts form and allow the regular plows to open the rest of the lanes? There should also be a way to get the plow to really toss the snow rather than just jamming it up on the roadside, maybe they side plow needs to be more of a throwing device?

very soothing I haul oil for a living.
Love this job! How much can I earn?
I think it's around $22 an hour? They hire every winter!
@@JimHowDigsDirt Thanks for your attention! Godd but not a big money. Every winter - yes, and you can buy additional equipment for using at summer and other seasons. Like vacuum cleaner and sprinkler.
Yep, doesn’t pay a lot considering the skill and trust involved, not to mention the liability. We have 16 plow operators in my municipality and maybe 5 of them are any good, sad to say. The others are a revolving band of idiots (mean but true)...a good operator does his job AND takes care to not destroy his equipment...a bad one may plow well but comes in with something broken half a dozen times a shift. That gets old (and expensive) fast.
If you only work for the paycheck, You will always be disappointed. The reward is doing a great job for others. The paycheck is a benefit.
Get it show that drift whose boss
Great job
Thanks Wayne!
