Rich the fight historian, ...thanks a lot for posting this fight with Alex Ramos. He was in my High School, a few grades above me. He was a local hero back in the Bronx! 👍
Barry Obee • I REMEMBER THIS FIGHT IT WAS ON NBC, AND RAMOS GOT ROBBED WITH A DRAW. THIS WAS IN CHICAGO, COLLINS HOME TOWN. RAMOS CLEARLY BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF HIM. COLLINS SUFFERED A BROKEN CHEEKBONE, A BROKEN JAW AND A CRACKED RIB IN THIS FIGHT. RAMOS HAD A REDICULOUS PUNCH, BELIEVE ME, I KNOW FIRST HAND, I FELT THAT POWER IN THE 1978 NEW YORK GOLDEN GLOVES. HIS LEFTHOOK FELT LIKE SOMEBODY HIT ME WITH A BAT. SO I SEE YOU WENT TO LEAHMAN HIGH SCHOOL IN WESTCHESTER SQUARE, THE BRONX, I USE TO DELIVER THE NEWS PAPERS TO MAX NEWS STAND ON THE CORNER OF TREAMONT AND WESTCHESTER AVENUE. TODAY ALEX IS THE FOUNDER AND HEAD OF THE RETIRED BOXERS ASSOCIATION, THEY GET MEDICAL BENEFITS FOR EX FIGHTERS. WHAT PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE IS THAT MOST BOXER DON'T END THEIR CAREERS WITH MILLIONS, A LOT OF THEM END UP BROKE WITH MEDICAL PROBLEMS THAT THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY FOR, ALEX RAMOS DID, HE'S HAD TWO BRAIN OPERATIONS SINCE 1998. HE LOOKS THE SAME THOUGH, HE HAS A FULL HEAD OF HAIR LIKE HE ALWAYS DID, BUT IT'S SILVER NOW.
Rich, great video and Alex Ramos started the Retired Boxer's Foundation and we got some help from them for Art Swiden which was so helpful! Alex is a great Champ! xx Shawn
Max V • WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ? IT WAS NO LONG COUNT, HE GOT UP RIGHT AWAY AND THE BELL RANG, AFTER THE REFEREE FINISHED THE 8 COUNT , THEY BOTH WENT BACK TO THEIR CORNERS, THE ROUND WAS OVER.
Just started watching the beginning of the second round notice that Collins doesn't snap out his left jab with conviction. It's almost as if he is just flicking it out there to set up his right.
I remember this fight. I remembered Ramos being called a flower child, I remember Collins having to hold the rope to support himself. I remember Ramos saying that he won every round, while he was looking at Collins.
Richie TheCee • YEP, I REMEMBER IT TOO. HIS EXACT WORDS WERE "I WON THE FIGHT AND HE KNOWS IT, THE ONLY REASON THEY CALLED IT A DRAW IS BECAUSE WE'RE IN CHICAGO." AND THE REASON WHY YOU COULDN'T UNDERSTAND COLLINS RESPONSE TOO WELL, IS BECAUSE HE HAD A BROKEN JAW, A BROKEN CHEEKBONE AND A FRACTURED RIB.
I trained some with Ramos before 1980 Olympics in Knoxville Tennessee training by the great Ace Miller. We never sparred because he outweighed by a lot. Great man and a great fighter always a man of class.
Carlos Crawford . I FOUGHT ALEX RAMOS IN THE 1978 NEW YORK GOLDEN GLOVES, MAN THAT DUDE HAD DEVASTATING POWER, ESPECIALLY WITH THE LEFTHOOK. I REMEMBER IN 1979 , THE CUBAN BOXING TEAM CAME HERE TO NEW YORK TO FIGHT THE AMERICAN TEAM, AND RAMOS FOUGHT THE MIDDLEWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION (JOSE GOMEZ) HERE IN MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, RAMOS SENT GOMEZ TO THE CANVAS WITH A RIGHT HAND IN THE FIRST ROUND.IN THE SECOND ROUND GOMEZ DROPPED RAMOS, IT WAS A CLOSE FIGHT BUT ALEX LOST THE DECISION. THE NEXT MONTH ,THE US TEAM WENT AGAINST ARGENTINA. ALEX RAMOS WAS MATCHED WITH JAUN ROLDAN, (THE ONLY GUY CREADITED FALSELY WITH DROPPING MARVIN HAGLER). AND RAMOS KNOCKED ROLDAN OUT COLD. THE TWO HARDEST PUNCHERS I EVER FOUGHT ALEX RAMOS, AND IRAN BARKLEY.
Alex and Gerry Cooney started that Retired Ex Boxers thing a number of years ago. I believe that one of the ladies employed by the organisation looks after Alex nowadays
Ramos, marketed as the next big thing, never came close to fulfilling the hype. Collins, however, was tough overachiever that you couldn't help but cheer for. Ramos proved himself a pile of rubbish with his classless outburst after the decision as well.
Gene Canfield • WHAT CLASSLESS OUTBURST. WHAT ARE YOU AND THAT OTHER COMMENTER MICHAEL COLLINS, TALKING ABOUT?RAMOS DIDN'T CURSE OR GET LOUD OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, HE SIMPLY SPOKE THE TRUTH. HE GOT ROBBED WITH A DRAW, AND HE LET EVERYBODY KNOW IT. THE REASON COLLINS COULDN'T RESPOND TO WHAT RAMOS SAID IS BECAUSE COLLINS HAD A BROKEN JAW AND BROKEN CHEEKBONE AND BROKEN RIB. AND AS FOR RAMOS NOT LIVING UP TO HIS POTENTIAL, I AGREE. BUT NEITHER DID COLLINS, HE GOT KNOCKED OUT BY THAT ENGLISH MAN (TONY SIBSON) IN THE SECOND ROUND, HE WENT DOWN FOUR TIME IN THAT FIGHT. THEN HE GOT KNOCKED OUT BY ROBBIE SIMMS, MARVIN HAGLERS BROTHER IN ONE ROUND.
Collins was hyped pretty good too. They were planning to match him against Hagler if he beat Tony Sibson. Sibson put an end to that nonsense. Collins should have sent Sibson a fruit basket thanking him for saving him from being killed by Marvin Hagler.
Golly gee Ferdie Pacheco and Marv Albert two of cassius clay s biggest cheerleaders I saw this fight in 84 with my Dad We shut the volume off Pacheco was so obviously biased in every fight that he got his nose in
the ref covering his face with the towel was etched into my mind in 1984 My Dad threw a beer bottle off the living room wall Ramos had no class at all after the fight
Michael Collins • BULL!!! RAMOS HAD ALL THE CLASS IN THE WORLD. HE DIDN'T CURSE ,OR GET LOUD ABOUT IT, HE CALMLY SPOKE THE TRUTH, HE SAID "(I WON THE FIGHT, AND HE KNOWS IT, THE ONLY REASON THEY CALLED IT A DRAW IS BECAUSE WE'RE IN CHICAGO)" AND THAT WAS THE TRUTH. RAMOS CLEARLY WON THAT FIGHT. AND BY THE WAY, COLLINS SUFFERED A BROKEN JAW, CHEEKBONE , AND RIB IN THE FIGHT.
Rich the fight historian you are one of a kind never lose that energy to bring back the great fighters of yesterday. Salute Rich. Ijs 💯
Thanks, Victor, I appreciate your support.

Hometown decision if fight had taken place anywhere else it woulda gone to Ramos , I believe he had a slight edge, but very close fight 👏😉

Ramos got a very long count in the third.

Long count in the 3rd round knockdown saved Ramos.
Alex has serious neurological issues nowadays unfortunately
Really? Very sorry to hear that 🙁
