  • On this episode, we’re joined by Hugo Valenti, Vocalist for Valentine, Open Skyz & for the last decade fronting the #1 US Journey tribute band, Voyage. Hugo is promoting the newly released Hugo’s Voyage album, “Inception’, an album of all new music inspired by the music of Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, Journey.
Hugo opens up about the struggles of achieving commercial success in the 80s & 90s which was the catalyst in launching a solo career & ultimately forming his Journey Tribute band, a unit that’s been going strong for ten plus years now. In the telling conversation, he explains that his motivation is to give the fans who are missing Steve Perry an opportunity to re-live the golden years of those amazing hits, plus he tells the revealing story of how he auditioned for the real band, however ultimately was passed up despite his amazing credentials.
Hugo takes us through the songs of “Inception”, material written along his Voyage band mates, an album that checks every box of what we all love about 70s & 80s Journey, complete with heartfelt lyrics, giant melodies & harmonies, great guitar & piano, and even some saxophone! Plus we learn about the band playing this years’ M3 festival, replacing Extreme & playing to an audience of 10,000 plus!
Another example of a great, unique, conversation filled with in-depth anecdotes and disclosures found only here at Metal Mayhem ROC.

Great interview. Hugo is an awesome singer and songwriter and so down to earth. Super dude. I just saw Voyage last weekend and they were great….easily the best Journey tribute band ever.
Inception is excellent. It’s a great record with no fillers. So glad to hear Hugo release his own new material again. And, enough songs for another record? Yes, please! 😁

I couldn't agree more, just phenomenal. I love the fact that there's no covers, just all originals. And the fact that Hugo's a fellow Long Islander, is just bonus. Definitely want to see them live.

I was at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom show when they premiered the new single, and in my opinion the crowd loved it. I was psyched because I already knew the song.

Well, I’m a huge fan of Hugo and the band’s work, and so I like to listen to their stuff on RUclips sometimes. I just happened to notice your interview in the lineup when I entered a search for Voyage, and saw that it was very recent, so of course I had to give it a watch. I would like to say that as a fan of both Journey and Voyage, I completely agreed with your point that they should consider throwing some of their original material into the song lineup. At least 3 or 4 of them. First off they’re really good songs. Great writing and fantastic production. Just as you said, they’re done so in the original vein of Journey that they would meld into a show lineup beautifully. When listening to the album, there were a few songs that I had to imagine if Steve Perry got ahold of the album and was giving it a good listen, he’d be saying, “oh, we would’ve written that had we thought of it”. I think Steve would be very impressed with the album, as well as the folks who go see Voyage.

Why didn't Journey pick this dude instead of Arnel? Arnel is a good singer n all but this dude is better~!

Well he mentioned that possibly it was a little too close for comfort and it would almost be like mocking themselves.

I’m a huge fan of Steve Perry as well as Hugo and Voyage.
When Steve left Journey for the last time, Neal, Jonathan, and perhaps other band members were not happy about Steve leaving. The drummer Steve Smith actually left Journey too stating that it wouldn’t be the same without Steve Perry. It’s been said that when Neal saw and heard Hugo, it kind of freaked him out because Hugo looked and sounded so much like Steve so they passed on auditioning him.

I think it was more the Arnel is a little more young and I think that Neal liked the way that Arnal moved and his energy but I'm sure it was harder for Neal because he knows Hugo and likes him.

Thanks so much for this interview. Ironically, I became aware of Voyage during the pandemic. Being that Journey has been a huge influence on me as a songwriter, I can relate to Hugo's "voyage" as a writer. Would love to meet this guy over a good dinner sometime!

Funny how much the word "cliche" was used in this interview. I'm sorry but FAR from cliche. Fist of all cliche is NOT easy to capture from that era. The idea is to capture magic. That is exactly what Hugo and his band of badasses did. Incredible music. Incredible. What passion and soul. I'm a HUGE new fan of this great, talented man!

This album is really good, even better than any Journey album that arnel made with Journey. Not to take anything away from arnel. I don't own any album that Journey made with arnel for some reason there songs ain't that good anymore. But the voyage's new album is great!!!!

If Journey had hired Hugo instead of Steve Augeri, Jeff Scott Soto, and Arnel Pineda they would have not only sounded more authentic but probably would have recorded several amazing albums with Hugo. Unfortunately we will never hear them. Hugo comes across so much more like Steve Perry than any of them by far and sounds so much better than Arnel in every way. Journey lost out by not hiring him. The musicians in Hugo's band are top notch! I'd much rather hear them with Hugo than the current Journey lineup.

  • @claradiaz3147

With deep respect to Hugo, I disagree with him. Journey should have hired him over Arguri or Arnel or anyone else. Hugo's the closest to Steve Perry ever. Jon and Neil, bad decision.
Note: Ross Valory, backstage at the after party following Journey's 800-SUICIDE benefit concert in San Francisco in 1999, told me Neil's last name "rhymes with yawn", FYI.

He has at least 4 internationally released solo albums + Valentine & Open Skyz major label albums. He looks like Perry on purpose for his Journey tribute band Voyage. You do understand what a tribute band is, don't you?
