We’ll see you sometime!) your video format is absolutely excellent ... keep doing this. best wishes)
Sat with a favourite Cuban Cigar and B&S Gin in the darkness of a two week Wales lockdown from Friday (C-19) wondering what the hell am I and her in doors doing here... we should be on the water! Loved the race and the smiles of happiness - fair winds, really enjoyed that thanks!
Hi David. The footage is from last year, before the lockdowns and all, but we're still hoping 2021 goes better. It sucks to see the UK and Ireland being so draconian with their rules. Anyway, we had a great time and hope we can recreate some of the excitement this season.
Hi Will, and thanks for coming along. Yes, we're also excited for James and doing what we can to help him out with tips on his new ride. Our channel has a slightly different vibe to it I'm sure, so keep in touch and let us know what you think.
Gotta bring your bar supplies with you. For bigger passages Wendy often puts kitchen towels around the bottles so they don't make a lot of noise when you're off watch and trying to sleep.
I love watching that boat go through the water. I sailed on a Oyster 485 from Tortola to Bermuda. The blueness of the water was the same then as now. Surprised you overtook the Amel. I would think she had more sail area.
Yeah, Talisman isn't a slow boat. Not as fast as the lighter production and race boats, but she sails faster than her calculated hull speed most of the time. And she does point well, which is equally important. A fast boat that won't point will still be slower to the mark.
Hi ASXS. Great to have you. I'm so grateful to James for giving us the shout-out. He's got a huge adventure in front of him and we can't wait to see how it goes. We hope to see him as soon as he gets his boat in the water as we're just a bit north of him in Antigua.
It’s always been that way. Any two boats, kids yachts, canoes or large cruisers once in sight of each other it becomes an informal race. Better still when you outpoint and out race them over the ground. Kevin’s face said everything I have said in the previous three sentences.
Thanks Nigel. It was a fun day and it is nice to win occasionally. Brian was a good sport about it and as I write in the description, he was still getting the hang of a new boat. So not exactly a fair match, but that's how it goes.
Hi Allan. You are right, Le Select", home of the "Cheeseburger in Paradise". Apparently Jimmy Buffet wrote the song there, or about the location. It's undoubtedly one of the cooler places, being both centrally located and cheap, which the cruisers (and crews) really appreciate.
Hi Kadam. Well, we won it pretty handily. But I have to say that we never discussed anything in advance with Brian , so he was almost certainly taken by surprise. Hi boat is a Maramu (something like and Santorin), and is 46'. They extended the hull later and made other changes to create the larger Super Maramu.
The correct answer to “ why are we racing” is. Cause if FUN. It’s the only reason to do it. Hey, did you guys climb that hill/mountain in St Kits? I bet the view was incredible.
Hi LG. We did not climb the hill, although we did go up to the forts at Rodney Bay, St Lucia, and Falmouth Harbour, Antigua. It's always incredible to look out and imagine a fleet of square rigged ships bearing down on you.
Looks like you are enjoying yourself . You have improved the sound quality a lot since some of your previous videos in the Med did you get a ”deadcat”?
Hi Frida. I found out that often it was one of the two stereo tracks that was bad and that by copying the good one in place of the bad I could eliminate a lot of the clicking and wind noise. Also, one side of the mic is often exposed to direct wind while the other not so much. I bought a ton of various mics to try out, and found that even within the same brand and model there were variances in sound quality. These are mics for action cameras, so not huge Rode style mics, although we do have one of those too. It's always important for us to be able to throw a camera in Wendy's bag when we go places. Bringing DSLR cameras never seems to actually happen.
I have to admit that Brian had no idea it would be a race. He just left the anchorage early and was cruising along looking forward rather than backward. So in the end there was no way we could accept too many beers on his tab. I do think we drank about 5 rounds.
Also, keep in mind that if a ketch is going upwind, she's backwinding a significant fraction of her sail plan. Brian might have done better if the wind had veered a bit.
Hi Susan. I'm starting to feel a bit bad. Like I've said to a few others, Brian didn't really know it would be a race (and probably still doesn't consider it one). He left a bit earlier than us and I think he wasn't 100% sure we'd even be leaving that day. Until we pulled abeam of him he probably wasn't even paying attention. We talk enough on WhatsApp, and I'm thinking that maybe he'd be up for a rematch now that he knows his boat. A lot of future cruisers look at these videos for hints of what boat they'd like to get and I don't want people to read too much into this. I suspect you are correct and that wind a bit further back would have given him a better sail angle. Thanks so much for being with us!
Kevin i respect you and your wife so much. Your so fortunate to live the lifestyle and the boat is gorgeous, and even better the way you care for it. I was catamaran fan until I started watching your amazing videos. I do you mind me asking what you paid for your boat and what year it is. My husband and I know nothing about sailing but one day we would love to crew with you if your ever looking for crew. I had a twin engine power boat for many years but the I got Rid of it. We have a bputique hotel in playa del Carmen and home on the ocean in Isla mujeres and would love to have you both over if you make it our way, and your more than welcome to stay with us if you would like, we can if you get over to either Playa del Carmen (Puerto Aventura) OR Isla mujeres. You can we would love to chip in ans go saling with you both it would be an honor to learn from both of ypu. My husband is an engineer he is amazing with solar systems and lithium battery set ups. Our entire home on the ocean in Isla mujeres is completely off grid and we run everything ac, refri, rrc. I think we could hook you up big time and give that generator of your a break for a fraction of the cost of what people pay becuase they don't know us. So let me know if heading our way it where we need to come meet you with the equioment. You and Wendy make such a great couple and compliment one another perfectly. I am approaching 60 so I am really itching to get out on the water while I still can. Take care, Sandra and Ariel
For sure. And it was a beautiful day for it. The footage is a bit out of chronological order, but I doubt I'll get all the videos produced before we get back to the coming season, and I liked this moment.
I'm assuming you're talking about the crowded anchorage in St Barts. We were good. When anchoring when there are a lot of boats it's best to find a gap and go all the way up to another boat's stern and drop the hook about one boat-length off, then start deploying chain back. With this method you'll rarely go wrong. You can do the same thing by drawing an imaginary line between two boat sterns and deploying in a similar manner. What you try to avoid is either being on top of the anchor of the boat behind you or past it, since they won't be able to haul if you're over top of it. This is a tough call of course since you can't see where they're set, but we've gotten pretty good at estimating. In the Caribbean where the water is warm and clear we almost always swim the anchor.
Hi Ben. Na, I don't think Brian had any idea we were coming until we were off his beam. One minute he's just cruising along, next comes us raging along. It wasn't really fair and I feel a bit guilty painting it as a true race. Per haps this season we'll see if he wants to do it again.
We paid something like £160,000, which was about $210,000 at the time (2017). I've seen them go for less, but I've also seen them go for a lot more. The thing is that a newer Oysters can be outrageously expensive, so this one hit the sweet spot for us.
wow, amazing sailing! I watch a lot of sailing videos, but they often lack.... actual sailing. Thanks for sharing!
You bet Arron. We try.
That’s just a beautiful opening shot.
Thanks Perry!
Great comment on steering to nav vs course.
You bet.

@@SailingTalisman few videos ive seen so far have been good 👍. Excited to see more. Thank you and sail safe out there Captain
If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard a glass or bottle klinking in. A sailing video, I’d be rich enough to sale.😉✌️🤙😎

Sailing Yacht Talisman Hi could you describe what features make a sailboat point better. I don’t see this covered in any other videos. Thank you!
Nice video, guys!
Thanks so much Steve. Great hearing from you earlier in the week. Boat is coming along here in Antigua.
Came over from Zingaro James page to check you guys out.

I have trouble with the wind noice myself so thats why Ím curious

@@SailingTalisman aha then I got some ideas to work on 🙏
I am going to guess the skipper of the Amel that you rolled to windward was buying beers at the end.
