On this platform, we understand that age is mostly irrelevant. Walt Disney himself founded the animation studio to create movies for all ages, from '2 to 92'. With that being said, we as "fans" have a right to criticize any media, especially when we have supported it for years/decades. That goes for any company producing any product that people put their money into. Reducing our comments/criticisms/concerns down to "stressing over Disney Princesses" is a reductive tactic that I can see right through. I am not ashamed for enjoying the things I love and wanting to do my part to keep the "legacy" intact by speaking out. I lose no sleep whatsoever over Disney's irrational and deceptive moves/decisions. I spend maybe a few days to a week writing, preparing, filming, and editing a video on a topic, and then that's it. I don't speak on it again until Disney does something questionable again.
@WondrousJoJo you should listen to your own statement about being respectful because all you do is showing interviews about female leads spreading Hate because they are showing changes and inclusivity of story that are all white because back then other ethnic stories didn't matter every story catered to white people and I don't want my nieces and cousins growing up thinking they need a man to save them keep that shit for the weak people like you with that mind set, you and the ignorant people attacked Halle Bailey for not being White. You Hateful Negative people who put out Bad Energy like these videos Karma Is A B and God Don't Like Ugly. The Hate you are showing these Women Karma will...
You are way off base, and it shows. I support Halle and have supported her since the time I discovered her and her sister. Just because I point out something about Disney's disingenuous motives doesn't mean I hate the leading actor. You talk about female empowerment and representing women of color properly, yet you believe giving black girls scraps for representation is appropriate. You also seem to be fine with making men appear incompetent and inferior. If you really supported change (as I do, and I always have supported it), you would prefer new movies with fresh stories that can become legendary in their own right. There are whisperings that Michael B. Jordan may play Hercules for the live-action remake. I don't support that either. I'd much rather have a new movie like what they did with Encanto for the Latino community. I'm not putting out "bad energy", I'm putting out the truth. The truth is, POC deserve BETTER. As for being "rescued by a man", you're even further off base. Disney started getting over that troupe back when Mulan came out. We have so many newer movies that don't entirely damsel women, like Princess Tiana. I've NEVER on this channel said that I wanted to continue seeing women as damsels in distress. What I DO speak about all the time is Disney's strange pattern of making men weak and useless. You don't make change and uplift women by putting men down. What I also support are the desires of traditional women who do want to have a strong masculine presence and help them. I've always had respect for both types of women. You should watch more of my content first before you make these ridiculous accusations.
@WondrousJoJo you talking about scraps, the problem is White people shouldn't be writing stories about culture they don't understand. That's why Mulan was offensive to some, Hunch back of notre dame and pocahontas cultures were upset because they were misrepresented by people writing stories they know nothing about maybe they should have asked but The Little Mermaid isn't cultural because there aren't only White Mermaids in make believe because they aren't Real. Your negative ass videos about why Ariel should be White has nothing to do with the story its just your preference. The story didn't change at all you and all the other Haters issue is Halle Bailey being BLACK.......
The modern criticisms of the Little Mermaid don't even make any sense. Everyone always says "Ariel gave up her voice for a man" but forget that 1. her voice was symbolic of the confining family/cultural role that she desperately wanted to escape, and 2. she wasn't interested in Eric because he was a man, she was interested in him because he's a human, and she's really curious about human culture. Saying "Ariel gave up her voice for a man" is like saying "Rapunzel gave up her safe and cozy tower for a man" Like YEAH THAT'S THE FREAKING POINT, ugh
It strikes me as so ironic and funny when these people come out and call these stories problematic because “the girl gave up everything for a man” or that the girl’s only motivation is to get with the guy, like? No? It isn’t? Ariel didn’t give up her voice solely for Eric, it was because she wanted to be human. Rapunzel didn’t leave her tower because of Eugene, she did it because she was adventurous and curious about the outside world. Did the stories go completely over their heads or something? It’s so hypocritical when they go out of their way to make things “sexist” and try to fix them up when there isn’t much of a problem with it. By explicitly going out of their way to change up these things, they’re somehow making it look worse for themselves. Like, implying that a girl’s motivation in a story can only be to get with a man doesn’t seem like sexism to y’all? Smh
So true!!! I never thought about that! Unfortunately, it probably won't be acknowledged by most because the Queen isn't a man. "Stalking" apparently only matters if you're a guy. 😕
@@WondrousJoJoWhich bothers me how misandrists are like,"Patriarchy Patriarchy." And alot of the Disney characters were oppressed and harassed BY WOMEN. Ursula spying and stalking a minor teenage girl, creepy, Gothal abducts, abuses and gaslights Rapunzel using her magic hair to keep her young while Rapunzel will continue to age like a slave and idiots like @TheMisadventuresofNaomiJ think Gothal cared for Rapunzel?! I get so angry at females who bash men for such false witnesses and yet never take a look at the bad things the female villains do. Hypocrisy at its finest.
Lily James as cinderella was perfect. She did not made it about herself at all, and completely embraced the character. I wish other actresses would do the same.
@@niemsalleh7224what? She did! She was kind, loving, adorable, loves her animal friends, and girly. If being kind and gentle means no personality in this world, this is a world I don’t want to be in.
The best live action Disney remake was Cinderella. Her actress was charming, sweet, loved the character and brought forth the idea of “be kind and have courage.” They respected the material, and made the prince more of a person. He looked for her too, and chose love despite what his father wanted. Cinderella is aware but just as kind and lovely as always. She was stunning no. Her actress really explained that femininity has its own strength, in being a mother, kind, gentle, caring, etc. are all powerful traits, just not in the obvious sense. Cinderella saying “I forgive you” to her horrible family but still moving on is incredibly powerful, and shows a strength not usually seen, compassion and forgiveness, even to those who wrong you. Honestly, the live action Cinderella movie was the best and isn’t talked about enough.
Also, if Disney wants to make strong female characters, they should look up to Ghibli. Lady Eboshi, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Chihiro, Kiki etc, those are all complex female leads with real character arcs, that develop throughout the movie, instead of being "girlbosses" for no reason at all and having no development.
I loved that Hayao is on record saying that the animes and mangas at the time targeted towards young girls were all about one thing and these girls were too perfect and the epitome of beauty. Chihiro was made for little girls because there was a severe lack of little girl hero characters at the time, little girls could see themselves in her. She was flawed, she was whiny, she was bratty, she was crying, she was stressed, but she was also sweet, helpful, loving, sacrifices so much to save her family and friend, and slowly she becomes more and more brave. She is still afraid but she is brave enough to face what scares her and that is admirable. Every detail about that movie was throughly thought through, even if it originally had no plot( most of his films don’t they just sort of happen as he draws). These heroines still fall in love and some even end up with the guy but that is almost never the entire point. It is about a journey of self discover and love, and both are equally powerful 💜
I personally feel that Disney was improving a lot with their animated films. Yes, the vast majority of the girls find a partner in their respective films, but many people act like these girls are just robots with no identity who only want a man out of life. With each Disney film, starting with the Renaissance (The Little Mermaid), Disney has gotten better about how they portray their princesses and how they find love.
Disliking cheesy or simple stories (and crude humor) is actually a form of pseudo-intellectual snobbery. Something doesn't need to be smart, deep, or complex to be good, much less enjoyable.
The fact that Zegler AND Gadot repeated the same lines almost verbatim in multiple interviews tells me that it was from higher up. That's what Disney TOLD THEM to say, which is even more baffling. "Our marketing strategy is to sh*t on the original and tell people they're bad for liking it, that should make them enthusiastic to propitiate their sins by watching the new one!" Anyways, I just discovered you this morning and this earned a subscribe. Thanks for posting it!
Thank you so, so much! And yeah... while I do hold these actresses accountable, I have more content to come that will specifically hold Disney themselves accountable for many of their weird dealings and ploys.
I saw a video of Keira Knightley saying how she doesn't let her daughter watch The Little Mermaid because "she gave her voice up for a man" ?? She didn't?? She wanted to leave the sea and see the human world, it's a metaphor for growing up, leaving you family and going into the unknown; she gave her voice up because of Ursula.
Either she didn't actually watch the movie...or she's going off of what other people tell her who also didn't watch or pay attention to the movie. When her daughter is an adult an is free to see the film, we'll all be waiting for her with open arms lol.
Ariel's thinking and behavior isn't appropriate at the beginning for sure. She's infatuated with a guy she doesn't even know and has never spoken to. All to the point of giving up her family and voice. The original tale's lesson may be more fitting objectively speaking. But in the cartoon at least she does realize her mistakes and regrets causing her father to be harmed by Ursula. So the cartoon does provide a lesson but I can understand Keira as well.
She did give up everything to be with Eric, not to see the human world as in the live action. Without Eric she would probably be mad at her dad and not speak to him for a while but not to the point of going to see Ursula. That's how I see it.
@@goyam2981you haven’t really seen or listened to the movie or the Beoadway show have you. She misses a important family concert to go treasure hunting for human stuff, goes to the service and learns about what she has found from her devil friend, gets yelled at for going to the serfice again which means she does this all the time and her dad keeps yelling at her to not do it., there is no boy or even close talk of boy she sings a song about the world above and humans not a prince or a guy, but human stuff. She goes to the surface sees the ship and sees max and Eric for the first time, that’s when she hears him complain about being forced to find a wife, both feel trapped by their situation, a storm hits and Ariel saves him out of the kindness of her heart not cause he’s sexy guy boy. That’s when she can’t stop thinking of him, the play has songs about her love of humans and scuttle sings about human stuff and how to walk and act when she does get her legs. Her Aunt uses her sixteen year old crush to abuse her to get what she wants putting Ariel in danger up on land and such. They naturally get to know one another and these princes aren’t stalkers or problematic and it’s Ariel forcing him to kiss her not the other way around changing lyrics please. Know the story your telling it goes for actors and the creatives. And gen x can get a life or shut up.
Ariel wanted to leave the ocean before she even met Eric but Eric was part of the reason. The other reason and probably the main reason was because she was tired of her father being so strict and not listening to her point of view. He even went as far as DESTROYING her collection. Plus if anything, Ursula was the one who pushed her to do it for Eric, she told her that she had to get Eric to fall in love with her and kiss her all in the span of 3 DAYS!!! Not even weeks or months, 3 DAYS!!!
Rachel and Halle are really out here talking about taking the love story out of these movies as if it's anti-feminist to... I don't know... Seek human companionship? There are so many stories out there nowadays where there's not a central romance, we don't need to remove love stories to show that falling in love isn't the only thing that matters.
I grew up on these films, am 30 now and I believe they really told me over and over again that my only choice, my "big adventure" would be to find a man. It was so embedded in me that it derailed my life for years and took me a long time to recover from. not all but most of the media I grew up on boys always had adventures and girls where at home or finding a boyfriend. I think that's why I was always such a tomboy growing up and looked down on women.
This is interesting. If I recall correctly, Pocahontas never spoke of desiring a man. She was more concerned with her life path, finding herself, and following her own dreams. Princess Jasmine thought nothing of boys and was actually furious at the idea of being forced into marriage. She did ultimately fall in love, but she still wanted more out of life before Aladdin came into her life. She felt confined and trapped by the palace life in general and wanted to be a more free woman to explore the outside world. Yes, Beauty and the Beast is literally a romance story, but Belle's objective wasn't to find a man or fall in love. She wanted friends, people to talk to, books to read, adventures to go on, fantastical dreams to chase. Belle had (and still has) her own identity before falling in love with a man. Princess Tiana wanted to own her own business and use her skills and love of cooking to bring people together. She literally scoffs at the idea of dealing with a man: "I don't have time for dancing, that's just gonna have to wait a while. Ain't got time for messin' around, and it's not my style". Rapunzel and Merida came a little later, but they had dreams, goals, hobbies, and men were completely on the backburner. I believe Merida doesn't even fall in love and is a total tomboy, too.
@@WondrousJoJoThat is very true and we still love those Princesses because they were very well written, but making men weak and inferior is a disgrace, because Eric impaled Ursula, the Beast fought Gaston but spared his life, Aladdin defeated Jafar by outsmarting him and Phillip from Sleeping Beauty slayed a dragon.
The fact that they have to shout it out how these princesses needs to be strong, independent, leader blahblahblah means they can’t reach that point in their life and they have to project their frustration to be as such to the characters. The forgot that there are girls who still dream of being saved by their “prince”, to them if you’re not girl bossing in life you’re a failure. Way to look down on other women you’re supposed to empower in other ways. Im no psych but thats how I see it as.
Yeah, I feel like it is silly to set a high and unrealistic (and unhealthy, at times) standard for other girls and women when they themselves are just another normal person, just with a lot more money. And yes!---one of my biggest issues with this is how they both directly and indirectly put down more traditional women. If someone wants to become a girlboss, fine, do that; just dont make it seem like that is the most preferred and legitimate way to live or express yourself. -JoJo
I’m sure Rachel didn’t talk about Snow White like that in her auditions so idk why she’s doing it in interviews. How can you portray a character without even rewatching the film
Exactly. She has been recently acting like it was such a chore to have played Snow White. Like...umm.. YOU accepted the role. She's the one who "elbowed everyone out of the way to play the part." How can she be so eager to play a character that she acts like she hates?
Disney decided to do marketing this way. I don't think it is her idea at all. Why? Because both Haley and Rachel talk about the same. It feels inauthentic, forced. Instead of fixing their tales by adding things from the source (the prince tripping, the mermaid being friendzoned), they want to redo things. "Oh it is so hard to find an Arab boy for Alladin" but the source saying he's Asian. Also Disney ignoring the 2012 Snowwhites is infuriating. Both were unique in their take and made with love.
I always thought the kiss at the end of Snow White was the kiss he wasn’t able to give her in the beginning of the movie, when he sends a kiss through a pigeon. To me it seemed more like a first, yet last kiss.
Disney princesses were excellent role models for girls. It's the feminine part that angers these idiots because they want to erase women acting like women.
I was just responding to another comment that traditional women (who definitely still exist) have to lose their representation one movie at a time because Disney wants to erase them and prop-up the "modern" woman. My other issue with this is that it creates a big unnecessary balance between female representation. Disney was already naturally progressive with their heroines, even into the early 2010s. I didn't mind what they were doing back then because they didn't try to rewrite or "correct" the past princesses, they instead just created new girls. But now, they have the new girls PLUS they're changing the traditional ones. It's out of hand.
@WondrousJoJo absolutely. And these "modern women" depicted aren't even women in the sense that they act like men. They also are unobtainable in real life since most of them are perfect, unflawed, or contain magic powers (Mulan). It's counterproductive in many ways.
👸🏼 Hi, I'm from Warsaw (Poland). My grandma told me many times how she was at SW at the cinema with her dad. This was before World War II. Then my great-great-grandfather went to war. Until the end of her life, my grandmother talked about a "beautiful film for children". It was the first animated film in theaters! For those children who later survived the war, it was a beautiful memory. It is very sad to see how young people today do not respect this. BTW her dad survived the war and came back home after 6 years. Greetings from Warsaw!
Greetings! It's so great to hear from others across the globe! 😁 I also like your profile picture. Dark/black cats and the moon/nighttime! Reminds me of witches! 💜 Snow White did so much for cinema history and is literally THE reason hand-drawn animation was a successful medium for film. It's sad that people only see what they want to see. He does not stalk her in the film. He actually approaches her and wants to get to know her only based on her beautiful voice, initially. Also, I see the princess emoji! Thank you!! -JoJo
Modern Disney and Hollywood seems to forget that most Disney movies are based off of Fairy Tales!!! FAIRY TALES! Classical Disney was able to adapt them beautifully even with some liberties in the story to make them more kid-friendly, since some of these original tales are pretty dark. But the core values were mostly kept intact. Modern Disney is not able to realize that anymore and thats saddens me
nah, arial and erik both saved each other equal. ariel saves him from drowning. he saves her from being pitch forked by ursala. then she saves him from thundershock then he saves her when she's in that sea worldwind. they both saved each other equally. and yeah, it's funny they say they need this to be feminist when it kinda already was? they just weren't overly in your face feminist who think women are better than men like feminism is now.
Ah, yes, you're right. I may have misspoken. I do recall the saves being equal. Hey, it even better proves that the film was already far more progressive for its time, and it was progressive without it feeling forced. It felt very natural to the point that I didn't even think much of it until I got older. As a man, I appreciate seeing the female perspective of life and experiences. I don't want to watch a female lead if she's just going to be written like a stereotypical male character in a womans body. There are an endless number of male-lead movies that I can choose from for that.
it's not even a female with a male character, just that it's done badly. take almost anything from japan with a female lead in an action role and no one complains that she's a 'dumb girl boss'. 2b from nier automata for example. a tragic affair where the woman is forced to constantly kill her lover. you don't see people complain about her for being a girl boss. same with artoria pendragon who is the incarnation of king arthur who has her regrets of camelot and is known as the most powerful servant in the grail wars. no one complains about her power or her serious character. and the reason is they're well written and nuanced while still taking the female perspective into line. there isn't the simple 'hate men cuz i'm strong woman'. you don't see wonder woman get shit on for this because she's strong but still accepts her feminine character. so it's not about wether she's in a male role, but how that role is written for the female character @@WondrousJoJo
Ziegler seems to forget that the story is about a young person who was abused and powerless. Ziegler is dismissing just what abuse does. Snow was just seeking to be loved by someone. I don't care for Snow White, but don't disrespect her needs.
👸🏼 aside from Rachel Ziegler, my biggest problem was Emma Watson. She was allotted way too much control over a character she didn’t even write, and her boycotting the corset was so stupid. The corset controversy in Hollywood is based on ill-fitting corsets and unnecessary tight-tying. The corset itself, when used as undergarments the way they were designed/intended in ye olde days, rather than as a fashionable outer piece, is actually more structurally practical than a mere bra. It might be one of the many reasons why we as a society have more back pains than in centuries past (yes, men had corsets as well).
I agree! Emma had far too much control over the depiction of Belle. Belle is my personal favorite, so I may have been more critical on her than the others. Belle lost her sense of 'nerdiness'. She was an open geek/nerd who wasn't ashamed to exclaim her passion when it came to fantasy! That was one of my top favorite attributes of her. I feel like had Belle been a real person, she'd be into trading cards, video games, collectibles, D&D, anime/manga, cosplay, LARPing, etc! But noooo, Emma had to strip Belle of that aspect in the remake. I thought the corset thing was stupid, too. I could go on and on about how she stripped the movie of many things that made it great... but I'll spare you, haha. I may do a video on it in the future.
@@WondrousJoJo well I’m looking forward to seeing your video on the subject matter! Belle was also my favorite, and then E.W. ruined her for me. She made Belle seem extra arrogant and judgey on the townspeople who uneducated country folk. I felt like I was just watching a French Hermione Granger.
@@scarlett19b what kills me is people are more than willing to get upset with Rachel as they should but they still wanna excuse Bailey and act like she’s innocent.
Yes! Thank you for defending classic Disney princesses again, also beauty and the beast is my favorite Disney princess movie, glad to find more people like the film ! It’s so sad that lot of young women like these actress have big misunderstanding of feminine characters in the name of feminism, even though treating masculinity as if it’s better than femininity is sexist itself. I tried to speak with one of my guy friends about how I am upset over Disney changing Wendy’s from Peter Pan character in the new live action film, how they change her motherly, kind hearted and feminine personality into a bratty grumpy girl because they think ohhh this is feminism! My guy friend defended the film and saying something like it’s to teach girls that they shouldn’t just be mothers ??? I don’t remember exactly but it was basically him thinking that the original movie just pushed the idea to be a mother, Wendy wasn’t a mother, she’s like 12 but she just had mature motherly personality, so the way my guy friend answered even though I voiced how I see it as a women and the way the movie made it sound that being motherly is bad feels slightly sad because it almost make me feel that I am *boring* at some point since I am pregnant and soon will be mom lol If you haven’t watched both original Peter Pan and the new live action I suggest you to do so even though it’s not princess movie ( so it’s like I went out of the topic and it’s the second time I complain here about how they changed her 💀) Like you said, it’s just wrong that they hire actress who dose not like or understand these princesses, they just assume that their story is only about love love love which proves how shallow their understanding is, I saw SnowWhite as an emotionally strong character who was able to pull herself together when the queen wanted to kill her, that’s very strong for a 14 years old girl. 👸🏽👸🏽👸🏽👸🏽👸🏽👸🏽
I will always defend the traditional princesses! Are they 100%? No, of course not. However, they are far more wholesome and strong than they are given credit for in current times. I'm sick of standing by while people crap on them. I feel like they're teaching girls and women that to be relevant, seen, heard, and respected as women/girls that you have to be like a stereotypical man, just in a female body. That is so harmful. Being a man is not all it's cracked up to be --- believe me. There is so much power and beauty within girlhood, womanhood, and femininity. You're all being taught to forsake it, and that is so sad. As for Wendy, I may actually do a video on her. I watched the original Peter Pan for the first time in my life about a few months ago. For whatever reason, I wasn't allowed to watch it growing up. The movie was ok, but I absolutely appreciated Wendy and her character! I definitely see why her femininity is celebrated by some. I didn't watch the remake, but I have seen clips of how the new Wendy is...and that girl is just dark and depressing. I just don't understand why Disney feels this need to erase any semblance of traditional femininity. Soon we'll have no examples left. Lastly, thanks for putting the princess emojis!! You're the first one to do so! Thanks for your support 💜 -JoJo
Honestly I thought Ariel was pretty empowered as a woman already. She’s spunky, goes after what she wants, marches to the beat of her own drum. She also saves Eric multiple times throughout the movie. Regardless of what you can say about the intelligence of going after a man you don’t know at the price of her family, it is still HER decision. As opposed to the live action where they take all of Ariel’s spirit and spunk and threw out the window in an attempt to make her seem more empowered when it really doesn’t.
Yes, although dangerously rebellious, OG Ariel goes after what she wants, and we can't take that away from her. I think in this case, the directors blew it when it comes to making sure Halle was directed properly to express the spunk and spirit of the original character. I believe Halle has the ability to pull that aspect off, just going by her real-life personality. I could be wrong, though.
@@sophieamandaleitontoomey9343Ariel never doxxed another woman's business by lying about racism to get people to harass her causing her to not to be able to work and provide for her family. Also Ariel is not a stuck up misandrist bigot who lied about Eric forcing himself on Ariel.
All of these actresses have basically said the same things as each other, which makes me think that they could of been told to say those things by the higher ups at Disney. It's all part of Disney's DEI agenda. 👸🏽
I agree! But I still have to hold the actresses accountable because if they're truly fans, they wouldn't support the degredation of the original work they claim they love so much.
"girls weren't allowed to read books" in the beauty and the beast remake made no sense: 1st. in the original the town didn't like belle because they didn't have anything in common with her 2nd. In the 1700s during the time Belle was living in, women were encouraged to read books in France 3rd. The original Beauty and the Beast children's books (not the disney version) the author was a french woman (no wonder why beauty and the beast has an appeal for female gaze 😅) almost like this remake was way more sexist that the original Beauty and the Beast
I personally still believe that acting like this in public is part of the contract if you work for Disney. It may not be written down, but isn't it strange that this situation repeats itself everytime there is a new movie from this company?
Technically, yes. Snow White is supposed to be the "fairest one of all" in the land. This, coupled with the attention that her stepdaughter gets from a neighboring prince, causes the Evil Queen to become overwhelmed with jealousy and envy, leading her to make a few attempts to eliminate her.
@@WondrousJoJoSnow White is not only beautiful in looks, but her character is. Snow White is kind, compassionate, pure-hearted, respectful, stern when she needs to, and a bloody sweetheart. I HATE it when people bash her, Aurora and Cinderella because they have a different kind of strength that's not like Mulan, but in their grace they have for others. People bashed them so much and now Disney is hellbent on ruining their characters by making all females be strong like a man and toxic as well as unlikable. I don't like being strong, especially by myself. I wouldn't mind being saved by a man. It lifts the burden off me and lets me know I am not invincible and I need help. So I hate this poison agenda they're pushing where men are emasculated and made to be useless, so women can bash them by calling them that while creating more toxic, arrogant, haughty narcissistic women who think they can do all things alone when really they want us to be miserable with that kind of misandrist thinking.
👸🏻 I’ve had to explain many times that the princesses were great role models for me. Their stories were always about how if you’re a good person who sticks to your values and supports your friends they’ll be there for you too. But the misandrists have been trying to tear that down for decades and now they’re within the walls.
I just don't get it. I rewatch movies like Cinderella, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid.... and I just don't see how these ladies are horrible examples. Are they depicted perfectly 100% of the time? No. For example, Jasmine is sexualized at some points in her movie. Ariel is hedonistic and self-indulgent with little concern for others. Aurora has no real active part in her movie, I can admit that. Those 3 examples I gave are minor things that can be fixed. Jasmine can be less sexualized in a remake with no issue. For Ariel, Disney could put back the scene where she apologizes to her father (they scrapped it for the original film). Aurora can have a new part written in a remake that allows her to be more active in her story without taking away from or ruining the overall story. Maybe for Aurora, they can make a cool and epic scene where she actually fights against Maleficent's spell to have her prick her finger. Maybe she can battle a shadow form of Maleficent that is trying to seduce her to prick her finger. At least that way, she wouldn't be so passive, but she still loses the battle to Maleficent and falls asleep like she is supposed to. I swear Disney should hire me, hahaha!!!
Besuty and the Besst script was written by a FEMINIST woman (Linda Wolverton) , who was the first woman to work with mostly men in the process of creating the story. But añso she gave the Beast a great charactwe development instead of downgrade him (like in the crappy 2017 remake the screenwriters did ). She said she wanted to include her agenda in Belle vecause she wanted a new kind of princess , accodrding to the 90's new kind of women ....but iBelle is STILL FEMININE , Belle has compassion, is polite, is kind , but has enough "balls" to confront a massive Beast ! To add more , she being a feminist in a recent interview she didn't like Lefou being gay in the new version 😂
Yes! Belle was kind, stood her ground, spoke her mind, was bold, adventurous, and unapologetically an imaginative dreamer! The remake Belle is dry, uninspiring, and stole Maurice's profession in a pathetic attempt to make her look better. 🙄
Agreed!! Can someone who actually loves these princesses and the source material be picked to play the character!! We dont want to see the actresses "infuse" themselves and their values into a part. We want to see a DISNEY PRINCESS! 👸
Both Zegler and Bailey just did an interview together. If you want to see how two narcissists suck up to each other while belittling their audience, check it out.
I'm a woman and I agree with you. I'm sick of these female actresses pushing the men aside and giving a toxic feminist image of my favorite princesses. I was angry when eric hero moments were pushed aside to make ariel an independent feminist character. Also beauty and the beast is one of my favorite movie 👸
As a woman I'm done with them pushing the SSJW down our throats and ruining classic stories we loved. It's capable to make strong women without them being annoying. My favorite snow white will always be Drew Berrymores version
The thing about the old Disney princesses was they were strong in there own way and were feminine, bell being the outsider in her village, not confining to the standards of what they expected the women in her time to be, she was proud of her father even though people in her village made fun of him, and she was brave to go look for her father and take his place at beast castle, plus she was brave and told the beast off despite being like half his size and him literally being a huge beast, bell was a strong character without the need to be overly aggressive or men hating like the current times thinks is cool to do, Ariel going to look for things from the outside world despite her mother being killed by humans, and Cinderella who literally had evil sisters and stepmother still had a strong will to not let break down from all the hardships that put her through, and she still had a nice and cheerful personality, and that what made them strong and endearing characters to people who watched them, not this new woke narrative that shames women for being helped by men or even liking men, like to be a quote strong women you got to bash or belittle men, cant like men or need men for anything, unless they are kissing your butt and praising everything you do, and lastly they are perfect and never wrong, these modern live action princesses are a pale farce compared to the original Disney princesses of the past and I get so tired of them saying they are fixing the story when they're destroying them instead.
Strength is neither the absence of weakness nor is it putting others down to look bigger than you are. This is what the current 'strong female lead' in Hollywood does. For contrast, look at Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket, she's no warrior, but she resolves to break the curse on the Sohma family because she loves them and because she doesn't agree with the future Akito tells her they will have. Similarly, Anne from Sugar Apple Fairy Tale regularly breaks social norms in favour of her personal values in both small and big ways, and does so with no shame whatsoever. Anne is especially good because it's obvious Challe is falling for her and supports her as she pursues her art as a sugar sculptress.
@@WondrousJoJo Thank you. Honestly, I feel like Hollywood is behaving like a mediocre/emotionally neglectful parent. They do the bare minimum to make it feel like they're doing the job they say they need to do, leave the one they're meant to be providing for heartbroken, then play the victim when they find that that person/those people have cut them out of their life.
It's as if you should be ashamed of being a "Traditional woman" those types of women in media are actually my favourites. Tangled is my favourite movie because it has all the boxes checked out-- and the romance kills me 😩💕
Exactly! I'm so sick of Disney shaming one side in order to uplift the other side. They do this with race (race-swapping the white characters), they do this with sex/gender (putting men down), and they also do this to traditional women (uplifting more masculine women over feminine traditional women). It's so aggravating!
See this is why I liked the show once upon a time a lot of the actors loved the original source material. And yes they made Snow White a warrior BUT she still had Prince charming or David because that was his name in the show anyway snow and David saved each other multiple times in the show and loved each. So yea they changed some of snow character in that but they kept her heart if that makes sense. She was kind and loving and every hopeful. And mostly important she still had the help from the prince and the dwarfs. And was told when she was in the wrong.
I've never seen that show, but I have heard of it. The way you describe Snow White in it sounds like a step in a good direction for the character and story.
THANK YOU. Disney Princesses were always great role models for me and I love the original films so much. They were all great complex characters with beautiful arcs. There's no need to change up their characters, which is basically just giving them a more masculine edge and sidelining the male hero.
Snow White has a bad rep for being this conventionally feminine, housewife-ish type of character, but I definitely think she has her value. She's hard-working, kind, selfless, and optimistic. She has empathy and makes the best of a hard situation, instead of freezing or taking it out on others. I think many people, including myself, could learn from her.
Without snow White, there likely wouldn't have been stuff like shrek, puss in boots, spiderverse, the incredibles, monsters Inc, studio ghibli, ect. That movie was the first feature length animation. It proved it was possible. Regardless of what you think of the contents of the story, you gotta at least respect it more than just calling it a "cartoon". That movie was vital in the world of animation.
Our boy is out here speaking straight facts yet again. I have a personal history with Ariel, I used to abhor her down to the last cell but it wasn’t always so. As a little one I wanted to be her, pretended I was a mermaid. Who amongst us hasn’t flopped their body onto the edge of the pool or bath pretending to be Ariel on the rock? But slowly I was poisoned by public opinion and started hating her because I believed she was boy crazy, that she was reckless, that she was ignorant to the point of no return, that she was stupid and gave it all up for nothing. Then one day I grew up and realized my god I have wronged you and I’m not the only one. Lindsay Ellis (formerly Nostalgia Chick) made a video about how she didn’t care for Ariel either and I felt so seen but then she realized as the new one was being announced that she was wrong and made an apology video to Ariel. It is sad that people still think she gave it all up for a boy, there is so much at play here. She’s 16, she’s young and naive and doesn’t know better but thinks she knows better and she’s rebellious and wild, as untamed as the sea. Her love is for the human world and she desperately wants to be there, wants to be them. Eric is just a sweetener and she wasn’t planning on turning human, actually she was going to try talking to him as a mermaid because she didn’t care about their differences. A lot of this she was pushed into by other sources, one well meaning and one pressuring her with ill intent. What young person hasn’t tried to run away from their unfair parents? Or thought about it. Ariel follows through with it and some girls do in real life. Ariel questions her every move but is constantly pulled and pushed into this contract, she’s closed off from her friends and even her own mind, barely given time to think. She isn’t smiling proudly when she signs that contract it seems so forced, like she feels she has no choice and combined with her anger she feels she has to. When she is seen crying on land for the third day, it is not just because she’s lost Eric she has lost everything. Her life, her family, her friends, her voice. In those silent tears I felt regret and she does apologize and told her father she didn’t know better and it’s true she didn’t, nor did she fully understand the repercussions. She suffered so much to get what she wanted and her father saw that, he gave her legs and a new life. She still loves him and both land and sea are able to be together now. If we factor in the sequel there is even regret with Ariel’s decision, she misses the ocean. Now that she is an adult she realizes she took it for granted. These are all things I wish people would realize before saying this movie is as shallow as a kiddie pool and that Ariel is vapid, selfish, and dumb.
Haha, thank you!! I personally used to hate Ariel (lol), though it had nothing to do with the common misconception that she "gave it all up for a boy"... I knew better than that. My disdain for her came from her reckless behavior and putting her family, friends, and kingdom ALL at risk simply because of her own dreams. Growing up, I was a kid who obeyed my parents, so seeing her rebel in such a big and dangerous way was not all that appealing to me. I also hated that it seemed like she lowkey bullied Flounder at times, like when she poked fun at him several times for being more cautious. There was also the time he got stuck in the ship. Comments like "don't be a guppy!" or "Oh, Flounder..." kind of bothered me because they're supposed to be best friends. If he is your best friend, you already know he is a more sensitive creature who would rather avoid dangerous situations and can be kind of goofy at times. And....as I'm writing this, I think I literally just made the connection that I saw bits of myself in Flounder as a kid LOL. Anyway, you made some excellent points! The fear when she signed the contract, the external forces pushing her to be more reckless than she already was, and her tears representing losing everything in her life and feeling like she made the worst decision in her life. Present day, Ariel isn't all that bad anymore in my eyes. If I get around to doing a Princess Pathologies on her, it won't be mean-spirited like it probably would've been had I done it maybe 10 years ago, hahahaha! Also, the remake made me appreciate the original even more, and I may do a video on that. And Lindsay Ellis...I WISH I was as good as she was with her videos! Maybe one day! She was one of the many RUclipsrs who inspired me. I have a lot of respect for her work, and I've known of her for several years! That Hercules video is still fantastic, just to name one! As for her original Ariel video, yeah, I felt heard back then, too. You're not alone! Thanks, as always! -JoJo
There is nothing wrong with being boy crazy even though she wasn’t, Ariel and Snow White are kids teenagers, they have the right to be boy crazy and want romance. It’s natural and if you say teenage girls don’t just have boys on their minds your lying to yourself. Belle was in her early twenties or late teens but was an adult not a child Cinderella and Snow White and Ariel and Sleeping Beauty and jasmine are teenage princesses and have the right to be or want to find love.
@@peterboq1 I understand that now and maybe deep down I knew that all along but strong and wrong opinions about something you love turn you into a jaded person and you will start spouting lies too because it’s all you are fed, even if you know it isn’t right. None of the Disney princesses in the official line-up are even boy crazy, they just love and presumably marry one person. I suppose Anna is the closest to being boy crazy but even if they all were it’s not a problem. Lord knows I was. For a while there I even bought the idea that Tinkerbell was a…let’s say loose woman simply because of the way she dressed and other snooty women and girls made me think that. It is important now to teach girls that Snow White is just as powerful as Moana, Ariel’s goals have just as much value as Meridas.
Omg everything you’ve said is on point especially towards Snow White !!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I’ve been saying she only took the role to become famous with Disney, and to get rich quicker. Every movie she’s been in she’s pretty much said that she needed money or a job. She has no passion for being Snow White and after she got casted as Snow White all of a sudden she is a Snow White fan! And she takes the entitled part to a new level when she says “oh the kids dress up as me it makes me cry” like shut up Rachel it isn’t about you. They dress up as Snow White!
9:13 I think the biggest irony about the new live action girls talking about sidelining the male characters is that they were almost ALWAYS sidelined. “Aladdin” and “Hercules” were maybe the most “equality” movies where it’s equally about both of them (but more so “Aladdin”). “Cinderella III” and “The Little Mermaid II” in the 2000’s finally made the movies less singularly about the princesses.
Agreed! People may try to argue that 'Oh, well they're princess movies and they should be all about her and she should be the active/proactive one.' The problem with that is that Disney didn't always have a "princess line" that intentionally markets towards girls. Back then, the studio just tried to do what made them the most money and hadn't fully fleshed out their princess 'formula' just yet. Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty (the original 3 princesses) were done during a trial and error phase. Walt saw value and potential in those stories from an animation standpoint and felt they could be relatable to ALL audience members; the young, old, male, and female. It wasn't until later that the Disney company came up with that marketing strategy. I say all of that to say; it wasn't about specifically portraying women and making role models for girls. Walt just wanted to tell stories for all ages/peoples to enjoy. But in this era, these actresses and radicals criticize the foundational princesses as if Disney originally made these stories to cater and provide representation to the female audience only. This is another reason why their bantering comes off to me as so narcissistic and self-centered. Disney characters belong to all of us to appreciate and share... not just the female audience. -JoJo
@@WondrousJoJo I think that’s beautifully written and well said. I can’t say what Walt Disney had intended, but the feminism was definitely already there, even with as you put it, making the princes “just there”. It was only after he died that non white Disney animated movies came to be, or even gave princes personalities, character development, and their own plots. I consider Hercules a prince of sorts, but there are so many things wrong with that movie, but I digress.
@StutteringWittyBlonde Thank you! Side note: I do wish Disney pushed "Princes" as hard as they do the "Princesses". This is probably why some people seem to think Disney films are for girls. It's already bad enough that people think they're only for children. :(
@@WondrousJoJo I absolutely agree with you. By the way, I did notice that you made a video about Black representation in Disney films, which I will watch next, but I’m trying to wedding plan and catch up with college homework, so my attention span is nonexistent 😅.
I do think Beauty and the Beast was the most "equal", in the sense that it was about both of them. Aladdin and Hercules was really about the titular men (and there's nothing bad about this), with Jasmine and Meg being two very well developed supporting characters. With Mulan, it was the other way around. It was about her, with Li Shang being a very well developed supporting role. Out of Jasmine, Meg and Shang, Meg is the one, who develops the most, though, so in this sense it's about her development as well.
👸🏼 While I didn't actually have a problem with the changes made to The Little Mermaid--I didn't really think Eric was sidelined, I thought they actually gave his character way more depth, and I didn't really mind that Ariel ends up saving him in the end. In fact, Eric with his crossbow was the reason Ariel was able to get away from Ursula to begin with--that being said, I do agree with the message of this video as a whole, lol.
I totally made it through til the end of the video!👸 I don't really have much to say or add other than THANK YOU! I'm also sick of all these disingenuous narrative they're forcing on these movies. I consider myself a feminist and I thought the classics are already quite progressive on their own. One just has to look beyond the love story or romance aspects to see that actually the princesses are such strong characters on their own. It's as if their crime (in the eyes of "modern feminism") is ending up with a man. It's sad especially when, as a woman, I've come to appreciate these characters more as I grew up because they tell me that a woman CAN fall in love and STILL be strong. Being in love or romancing a man shouldn't diminish that. I'm glad that someone with a platform like you is speaking up about this narcissism that's just inherent in so many modern movies, remakes, sequels, and whatnot (I used to be optimistic about these things, but now I'm sick of them, especially because they keep trying to fix what's not broken and end up ruining it more.)
Clearly, it shows us the line between people who made art for entertainment and modern corporate chasing of the next narrative that will make them the most money. They dont realize that fantasy is what made Disney great in the past, it was meant to just be nonsensical and fun. Loved the comment someone else made about how Miyazaki wrote good female heroes, meanwhile his films also criticised real world issues in a hidden way.
if ariel is truly her favorite princess, then im convinced shes GOT to be reading from a script telling her to bash the original movie in order to promote the new one... i wouldnt put anything past disney considering how hard they've been flopping lately, gotta do anything to get buzz 👸👸👸
👸🏻 thank you for sharing your thoughts and being brave enough to say something I’m too scared to do. I’m a cis white woman in the industry who absolutely feels the same way and hates the entitlement of these ladies who make it seem like the original character was somehow less than and not good enough of a feminist.
I just came across your channel and couldn’t agree with more! They just don’t understand the main themes and points of the old movies. Why can’t they just use other fairy or folk tales as new base material. To me it seems like the Disney of today is trying to destroy the Disney that Walt wanted to create.
Yes, I agree!! Don't erase the current representation. Just take more of the untouched old stories (or, just come up with something new) and make those into overtly feminist characters. I don't think they'll do that, though, because they know that no one TRULY wants to see that. They instead use legendary and popular names like Ariel and Snow White to draw in the long-time fanbase. It's pathetic, honestly. It's a cheap practice, too.
I have a feeling that the turnout for the movie’s premiere will have western music playing and tumble weeds rolling 😅. I don’t know anyone who is excited for it.
👸 As a woman who grew up with all the Disney princesses and now has daughters and a son, I intensely, violently hate how the current so-called feminist narrative requires men to be reduced in order to lift women up. How is that any better than what they're trying to correct? What happened to wanting the genders to be equal? And why is a man rescuing a woman so particularly taboo all of a sudden, but the woman is allowed to save the now-characterless man all day long? Not only does this give girls the idea that they have to do everything alone and not let anyone help them, what the hell is this teaching little boys?
Yeah... Girls can't get ANY help unless it's from another female character... and even that is changing, too. They also can't be romantically attuned, so they're all becoming asexual-like.
What is it with these women dogging on these princesses for finding love, saying that “It’s not about the boy,”or “she’s not going to be waiting for true love”? What is so bad about wanting love? Are women not allowed to fall in love with a man in stories anymore? Can women not be strong, compassionate, independent people while also wanting to find love? Like, why? They are not exclusive things. Who the hell hurt you people?
👸 Yeah it does seem lately the actress are making it about them. I personally did love snow white growing up it was a simple fairy tale that was enjoyable. I didn't see any issues with it so to have someone say the prince was stalking her, I was like were we watching the same movie? Then when Ziggler said she only watched the movie once or was scared of the ride it made sense she misunderstood the film. Also for Ariel I think she saved Eric four times, once when he was drowning, twice at the wedding scene he was under Ursula's spell, third time when Ursula tried to obliterate him with the trident and the fourth time in the after math where he almost drowned again. Eric I think saved her twice, once when she was being taken by Ursula and when Ursula was attacking her with the trident. Not trying to make it a competition or anything. Honestly I see the Little Mermaid as a cautionary tale between parents and kids. Triton was trying to control Ariel who was fascinated by human stuff, Eric I felt came last until she met him like a school crush. Instead if having the two talk Trition destroyed her possessions, yelled at her and refused to listen, causing her to fall into despair and being swayed by Ursula. Now when Eric saved Ariel to me it showed Triton that he was wrong and not all humans are bad, by putting Eric on the sidelines it diminished the message.
Excellent video and great points, as always!! You are absolutely right, it's not about them, it's about the characters. When I go watch a Disney princess movie, I expect to see the Disney princess, not the actress playing her. Also, fellow Beauty and the Beast fan!! *high five*
This is true. Makes me wonder why no one complains about the misrepresention of male characters. People only complain about/focus on the female characters.
I think it because early Disney was all about the dress and magic. They had the drama and the romance. The men were there for a happy ending. The men were all charming , cute and safe. Also the dolls of the princess sell more to a the prince ones. The change started with prince Philip since he could sing and dance. He got a personality who fought for her with the fairy doing all the work. It has gotten better with Eric ( not as much), prince Adam, the guy from frozen, and my fav Fin rider. I think I was Disneys reaction to the falling in love at first sight thing and then fleshing out the role of the prince and forming what can be real relationships in a short time. What bugs me though is the message we don’t need a prince that seems to be happening. I think that that is a disservice to young viewers who are missing at the opening view of the magic that can be love.
People are severely lacking media literacy. Like, these stories are based off fairy tales, which are usually allegories for lessons to teach children. It's very disingenuous to interpret them literally because they aren't really meant to be literal... I'm not an expert on fairy tales so I apologize for any mistakes, but that's how I understand the stories. They're metaphors, allegories, they have witches and curses in them ffs 🤣 this whole crusade in modern Hollywood to make female characters less feminine and saying their femininity is bad and wrong is inherently anti-feminist. Modern feminism is about "there's no wrong way to be a woman" that women have the freedom to choose what kind of woman they want to be. The "feminism" these actresses are promoting is outdated by like 30-40 years now, it's 1980s feminism tbh.
Disagree about Emma Watson as Belle. Did you watch the other interviews where she speaks up against Stockolm Syndrome accusations? For me she pefectly embodied all the character She is in no way a narcissist or entitled and actually respects fans of the original film. And she should not be compared to those other two arrogant self centered brats... is all about the community and themselves!
I think they just recite something they rehearsed to themselves because they think it sounds good, they don't seem to really care about the movies or the characters. They just make it all about themselves. Halle insisted on including her locs in what she called "her" version of the movie. You should also check out the scandal on her contribution to animal cruelty in case you haven't heard about it. Zegler also deleted a comment on her Twitter accusing a commenter of racism. The hypocrisy of these women is just disturbing.
These actresses “act” like they’re the writers and directors of these films and it’s ridiculous. Locs or no locs, after watching the movie at home, my only real beef is with her hair color. Some people loved to say that it was “more realistic than the fire truck red”, but 1) it wasn’t even RED. At best, it was a light brown. 2) it was a movie about mythology and folklore involving talking sea creatures and mermaids. Realism was hardly the issue. Hair dye or wigs exist for a reason.
@@TheAsh-hole it also took thousands of dollars to make her hair look even halfway like Original Ariel's. It seems they would have saved considerably much more money choosing an actress who more naturally looks like Ariel. But they almost spent more money than they made. And for the record how do they know redheads with that scarlet color exists or not. I've seen red hair come in a broad range of shades, (fire-orange, strawberry-blond, auburn, cherry-red.) It's like the detractors of OG Ariel fans like to gaslight with ridiculous arguments (including weak racism ad hominems) just to suppress and silence others.
One thing you'll never hear women acknowledge nowadays is that there's an entire Disney Princess line filled with dynamic, diverse, interesting female characters, and no Disney Prince line. Why? Because the male leads were typically flat, one-dimensional, and had very little screen time compared to the women. Put that in your feminist pipe and smoke it.
It's very true that in most princess movies, the male love interest has almost no personality or has little to no personal arc/growth. In many of them, the man's only purpose was to be the courageous assist to help free the female lead in some kind of way. He was nothing more than that. It wasn't until Aladdin that the male character could have his own shine in a Disney princess film. Aladdin himself had his own challenges and weaknesses to overcome. He grew as a character and had a real sense of "life" to him. Most Disney men did not get that. I also think that certain women only hone in on the man's traditional role in the films so much that they don't consider that maybe men/boys don't feel properly represented either.
@@WondrousJoJo Eric was a pretty decent character too though, until the remake pretty much assassinated him in that he didn't rescue nor marry Halle's character. There seemed enough depth to Original Eric, in how he didn't just settle for any girl, e.g. the Princess of Glowerhaven. He was kind of like Princess Jasmine in that he wanted to marry for love, not just because he was being forced/pressured to. Prince Adam as you saw also had very real struggles. But all of the princes fought for their princesses, quite notably in Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Original Ariel, so I feel there was enough dimensionality to their characters in that regard at least.
@@WondrousJoJoyou’re absolutely right and “Aladdin”. You could really tell the equality was there for both Jasmine and Aladdin’s character’s, development, plot, screen time, etc. “Hercules” five years later followed suit, but Herc was still the main character, and Megara was the supporting love interest with actual depth.
I’m gonna be honest I think someone is telling these women to say that stuff. I can totally see some executive pulling them aside saying “girl boss main characters and being overly nitpicky of our old movies is really trendy right now, make sure you say all that in the press junket.”
Lol, I definitely think there are 'whisperers', but I don't think they'd be that blunt about it. Or who knows... maybe Emma signed an NDA, and they really were that blunt about it.
I love fairy tales and where i am from the fairy tale of snow white starts with her mother sewing something per hand on a cold winter day and pricking her finger with the needle and wishing for a child with blood red lips, black hair like idk cole (sorry i dont know the translation for Ebenholz, my translator says it's ebony)) and as white as snow and in my book it says that she was called snowwhite because of that (where i am from she is called Schneewittchen) and i kinda feel like rhat changing the skin color should alos mean to change the because she was literally named after her skin color which is messed up but that doesn't make the situation different ( i am sorry if i offended anybody )
JojoBoyWonder Few Strong Woman Characters are Liara TSoni (Mass Effect Series), Jill Valentine (Resident Evil Series not included Alice Movies), Claire Redfield (Resident Evil Series not included Alice Movies), Dr Rebecca Chambers (Resident Evil Series not included Alice Movies), Female Shepard (Mass Effect Series), Charlene Bradbury (Supernatural TVShow), Rain (Resident Evil Live Acting Movies are non canon)
I've played several of the entries in the Resident Evil franchise! I've played the original on the Switch, RE2R, RE3R, RE4, RE7/BH, and RE8/Village. I started the first Revelations but didn't finish. I watched the stories online of RE5, RE6, Code Veronica, and "RE0". I've never seen any of the movies, but I heard they aren't very good. Anyway, yes, there are some good female characters in the RE franchise. I actually like Jill, even though I used Chris for my RE1 playthrough. Claire is fine, I have no issues with her. I like Rebecca, too. Characters like Ada and Ashley could use some work, haha. Don't get me wrong, I love Ada. She just isn't the best representation for women IMO. I don't think I need to explain about Ashley, hahaha! On this channel, I don't really cover video games (even though I'm a gamer, too), but just know that I agree with you that there are wonderful female characters out there in video games!
I'm pretty sure at least a few of these girls were being fed lines by the directors in those interviews... because the sheer ignorance in their takes on the originals whilst claiming to know so much about them? Doesn't make sense otherwise unless they either have no clue about the original outside of what the directors told them, or they don't truly believe in what they're saying about how bad the original is.
I do believe there are strings being pulled behind a lot of what these actors are saying. I also think part of it is the hype that blinds them. If everyone around them says Ariel's life is "all about a boy"... then I guess that must be true?
Oy vey. I consider myself a progressive and a feminist, and I just can't listen to Rachel Zegler without my eyes rolling out of my head. Reading romance as anti-feminist does a disservice to feminism which is really all about female volition and freedom to choose one's path. Romance can--and often is--part of that. One doesn't have to fall in love, but one can choose to, which is what makes romantic movies like Tangled and the live-action Cinderella so much more beautiful and powerful. Also, I don't understand why Disney is so quick to eschew romance when other media--namely, books--are embracing romance so hard right now. 👸
OK Halle Bailey was freaking obnoxious when it came to the little mermaid and no I’m not gonna change my mind on that because she was but Rachel Zegler is worse far far freaking worse. I mean she is ensuring that no one comes and sees this movie and then when it comes out and it bombs like every ever every other thing she’s been in she’s gonna blame every thing and anything except herself even though it’s gonna be like 99.9999% her fault of another mouth.
Lol, I didn't think Halle was THAT bad, but Halle was definitely worse with the promotion than Emma Watson. And of course, Rachel has been the worst. Like I said, they are getting worse with each movie. I'm scared to see how the next actress will top Zegler's debacle.
@@WondrousJoJo so am I and I think the reason that I find Bailey obnoxious and please don’t hate me for this please I beg of you, but the reason I find her obnoxious is because she kept going on and on and on and on about oh I’m representing little black and brown girls first of all no you’re not you’re only representing yourself second of all the little girls that you claim to be representing what the real Ariel do you know that this is a cheap knock off just like Rachel Zegler it’s gonna be a cheap knock off of snow white that isn’t gonna go anywhere.
It's happening with Blue Beetle too. Only kids of "brown" illegal Mexican immigrants in the US are seeing themselves and their families represented. The rest of the Latino population does not see themselves and doesn't think having illegal immigrants front and center as something to represent them is appropriate.
@@goyam2981 well, I may not be a part of their community, but I hope they don’t mind that I sympathize and agree with them because they’re absolutely right that’s not a proper representation.
It's the absolute lack of media literacy. Like, unless it's already stated by dialogue (not sung, because aparently the fact that Ariel sings "I want to be where the people are and find out everything about your world" before she even meets the prince is not clear enough)then it is too subtle and didn't happen. Also, Snowwhite did want a prince. "One day my prince will come and we'll be happy and I won't have to hide in the forest anymore." But what is un-feminist about wanting love? Why are we restircting female wishes to just being a badass?
If you ask me, it is because they're comparing themselves to men and traditional male-centered narratives. Many of them see the way men have traditionally been represented, and they feel like they're missing something if they aren't shown in the same light. That kind of thinking couldn't be further from the truth! Girls/women have a very unique experience, and I personally enjoy seeing that perspective. I don't want to see a woman be or act like a stereotypical man. I have enough options in media for that. It's already bad enough that I have to see men constantly being portrayed in a stereotypical fashion. Applying it to women isn't any more enjoyable.
All of the original disney princesses had aspirations outside of romantic relationships and found love along the way. Snow White's aspiration actually was to find love, but she didn't set out on her adventure in hopes to find it. In the beginning of the film, at the wishing well, Snow White sings, " I'm wishing for the one I love to find me today," and the prince, hearing her, went into the garden where he watched her sing for a moment. Then he sang along to flirt with her. It's actually really cute. It also sets up the rest of the movie because you see the evil queen watching this play out from another balcony or window. This is what prompts her to ask her magic mirror the infamous question of, "who is the fairest of them all?", and the answer strikes a nerve because she was already feeling a certain type of way about Snow White, evidenced by the facial expressions and tone during the opening of the movie.
Personally, I grew up with Snow white and it was the first movie i ever saw. Im really annoyed that all of these modern remakes are acting so smug towards the older movies. Like those were better in storytelling quality than the remakes. Even snow white, for as much as it is criticized, its impressive that it holds up pretty well to this day, and I think its a fun rewatch when you're an adult due to all of the creepy elements. The animation is also very stunning and creative, even by today's standards. Furthermore, I think its disrespectful for Zegler to not do even a bit of research on the movie and the character she's playing. Snow White was an offshoot of the great depression. She was supposed to be a strong, optimistic character who can handle tough times "with a smile and a song". It could be a really good feminist message if they adapt it from that perspective.
I don´t care as much for the actors, if they play the role they play the role you don´t have to like the role to play it. But the opinion they are sharing in interviews are the companies, the movie makers opinion and quidelines, that is the problem when the ones who wanna make it are the ones thinking "Yes we will fix this Classic Movie loved for generation but now we don´t think it works anymore let´s forget about it." The Actress have no say in how the character is potrayed, they can influence it but Ariel would have been written the same way no matter who they cast the only slight diffrence is the skill of the actress. And I mean for The Little Mermaid Hailey had to say "Don´t worry parents this girl is´t motivated by love." Only for some big shot woman, I don´t know her name but she made an article about how she thought the live action remake still was about Ariel falling in love with a Prince and did´t find it appropiate for her girls to watch it. So I mean people are dense, if you don´t tell them straight away in the trailer and make it obvious, some will still not understand the context of things. And one more thing, why are we putting ONLY Disney on this pedestal? Hundreds of other animated movie, 2D by the way are made still with romance and NO one comments or complain about them. Disney is big I get it but people should really not make it so that thier world view is dictated by them and Disney should´t feel responsible to answear or take all the critic. Disney have gotten critic for movies they did´t even make. During the 90´s I remember everyone thought all 2D movies where Disney. Quest for Camelot, Space Jam, Iron Giant, Anastasia, Land Before Time, and even Prince of Egypt people thought those were Disneymovie.
Not only was Disney "big", but they were also THE leading animation company. They also specifically targeted the child audience (mostly after Walt died). This is why Disney got the most flack (and continues to). Disney also takes over/buys so many other companies, making them even bigger. They also have had instances of shady business practices throughout the more recent decades....so honestly, they deserve to be on this "pedestal". They have a huge reputation and responsibility to live up to. If they want the title of the best, they'll have to live up to the best. That's my opinion.
👸 The original Snow White film brought a revolution to the film industry in general. I don't know what they think they're trying to do with changing so much about it. Of course it's not meant to be a role model anymore. Sometimes a film makes an impact in the industry and people's creativity, but there's ALWAYS biases involved in its creation. Sometimes you just need to acknowledge its impact and, if its current message is not applicable to a broad audience anymore, you just gotta let it go and only approach it from an academic perspective. And for what it's worth, I think the depiction of the dwarves in the original film is a much more glaring issue than the romance between Snow White and the prince. But I guess it was not good enough for Disney to mention until Peter Dinklage talked about it.
Peter Dinklage was way off base about the 7 Dwarfs. Dwarfs are magical mythological creatures, not real humans living with a condition called Dwarfism. They also didn't live in a cave... they lived in a very nice cottage.
@@WondrousJoJo I honestly don't know enough about that to refute that, but the fact that Disney felt the need to defend themselves after Dinklage talked about it by saying they took care in the depiction by speaking with communities of people with such conditions is... a little sus, idk 😅 I know that when I played D&D no-one in my group tried to defend themselves whenever they played a character whose race was a Dwarf. The distinction was clear in our case, Disney seems to be mixing things up though XD
👸I think it would have been better if they did a sequel to the cartoon version instead of a live action remake......I never saw snowwhite til I was an adult.....Disney has been making some ok remakes they could have been better.....Aladdin was my favorite.....the little mermaid was deceant.....I think a better idea would be to reincarnate or rewrite the fairy tales instead of trying to remake the originals.... 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I think the issues with the overall language and approach of all these remakes really lie with the CEO and all the other higher-ups at Disney right now. They just don't have the passion or appreciation to make a good film that all the fan-base will truly enjoy, like in decades past. To be honest, we live in a more privileged time. We have absolutely no memory or concept of what life was like without an animated film to help us process and go through life. That's why, I think, it is so much easier for the Disney company to destory/trample on every Walt Disney and his brother built. It's the saddest thing to me, but I'm glad to see there are more and more people dissatisfied with all the remakes, reboots, and everything else (like I am) because, one day, things may finally change for the better.
I absolutely agree that the ultimate offenders are the suits in charge. However, I feel that the actresses must still be held accountable for playing along with it, ESPECIALLY when they claim they have mad love and respect for the original princess or that she's her favorite. If these lovely OG princesses are their favorites, then why won't they do their part to keep the legacy intact? These girls know full well what they're doing when they get in front of a camera and degrade the original films.... because apparently, The Little Mermaid was "all about a boy". 🙄 I have another video planned for the future that'll hold yet another remake accountable.
@WondrousJoJo : Yes, I agree! Not enough people will discuss the importance of accountability and really put these actresses under the fire (which you do in a very respectful way). I also think that these younger actresses get caught up in the idea of putting themselves into the role to make it more "relevant" and "progressive", which is why I always appreciate seeing the original voice actresses defending their princesses (as well as the classic ones). They understand the nuances of each character in ways modern actresses do not. I will always appreciate the perspectives you bring into your videos, and I look forward to seeing your take on another remake! 😊
👸 Only 30 to 40 seconds into this video and I got tired of listening to what those girls were saying😫 How can these three be talking about three different movies and characters and sound exactly as if they're talking about the same movie and character?! Oh wait. I know the answer: Disney run out of ides the moment the Cinderella live action was a success and now they are just ruining everything.
She is a grossly overrated Karen, really. Did you hear about what she did to the nail salon lady? That incident is kind of old but you should probably do a video addressing that.
you guys are like 30+ in these comments stressing over Disney Princesses
@@WondrousJoJo true and well spoken
Good points!
I've never heard or seen anyone say that about rapunzel
Really good comparison and really good points/facts.
Smh
Actually Snow White was stalked by the Queen not by the Prince
So true!!! I never thought about that! Unfortunately, it probably won't be acknowledged by most because the Queen isn't a man. "Stalking" apparently only matters if you're a guy. 😕
@@WondrousJoJo The Queen wanted to brutally murder Snow White. Either by cutting her heart out or poisoning her. The Prince was a love sick boy
@@WondrousJoJoWhich bothers me how misandrists are like,"Patriarchy Patriarchy." And alot of the Disney characters were oppressed and harassed BY WOMEN. Lily James as cinderella was perfect. She did not made it about herself at all, and completely embraced the character. I wish other actresses would do the same.
Cinderella is the only live action Disney movie that got it right - love that one!
Lily James Cinderella is boring..no personality..
Look OG Snow White,She had a kind and sweet.right.but She can be super bossy etc.its her personality
That was the only good remake.
AMEN
And forgiveness NOT EASY
Cinderella is a strong character and Lily James nailed the role!…
Also, if Disney wants to make strong female characters, they should look up to Ghibli. Lady Eboshi, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Chihiro, Kiki etc, those are all complex female leads with real character arcs, that develop throughout the movie, instead of being "girlbosses" for no reason at all and having no development.
I absolutely LOVE THIS comment! I'm a Ghibli fan myself, and I know EXACTLY what you're talking about!! 💜
@@WondrousJoJo and I love your videos!
YESSS THEY ARE THE BEST FEMALE LEADS
YES! Princess Mononoke is top tier well-developed female lead with strong traits
What is so wrong for wanting a cheesy prince saves the princess, falls in love and lives happily ever after? That's all I want 👏 it's disney!
@@cultreader9751true especially if it’s a kids movie lol
Not that kids are dumb
The fact that Zegler AND Gadot repeated the same lines almost verbatim in multiple interviews tells me that it was from higher up. That's what Disney TOLD THEM to say, which is even more baffling. "Our marketing strategy is to sh*t on the original and tell people they're bad for liking it, that should make them enthusiastic to propitiate their sins by watching the new one!"
Anyways, I just discovered you this morning and this earned a subscribe. Thanks for posting it!
Thank you so, so much!
And yeah... while I do hold these actresses accountable, I have more content to come that will specifically hold Disney themselves accountable for many of their weird dealings and ploys.
If this is true Diseny is dumb. Those attitudes will only delve AWAY viewers
exactly that's how it is
I saw a video of Keira Knightley saying how she doesn't let her daughter watch The Little Mermaid because "she gave her voice up for a man" ??

Yeah, I feel it was the one and only time he'd have to give one to her, thinking that she was actually gone for good.
Snow White did so much for cinema history and is literally THE reason hand-drawn animation was a successful medium for film. It's sad that people only see what they want to see. He does not stalk her in the film. He actually approaches her and wants to get to know her only based on her beautiful voice, initially.
Also, I see the princess emoji! Thank you!!

Your grandma didn't mind that it was based on a German story I guess
Modern Disney and Hollywood seems to forget that most Disney movies are based off of Fairy Tales!!! FAIRY TALES!
Classical Disney was able to adapt them beautifully even with some liberties in the story to make them more kid-friendly, since some of these original tales are pretty dark. But the core values were mostly kept intact. Modern Disney is not able to realize that anymore and thats saddens me
It saddens me as well. Disney focuses on all of the wrong stuff.
"the original focused too much on the love story" .... OK?? Is that not the point?
nah, arial and erik both saved each other equal. ariel saves him from drowning. he saves her from being pitch forked by ursala. then she saves him from thundershock then he saves her when she's in that sea worldwind. they both saved each other equally.
and yeah, it's funny they say they need this to be feminist when it kinda already was? they just weren't overly in your face feminist who think women are better than men like feminism is now.

I don’t remember exactly but it was basically him thinking that the original movie just pushed the idea to be a mother, Wendy wasn’t a mother, she’s like 12 but she just had mature motherly personality, so the way my guy friend answered even though I voiced how I see it as a women and the way the movie made it sound that being motherly is bad feels slightly sad because it almost make me feel that I am *boring* at some point since I am pregnant and soon will be mom lol
If you haven’t watched both original Peter Pan and the new live action I suggest you to do so even though it’s not princess movie ( so it’s like I went out of the topic and it’s the second time I complain here about how they changed her 💀)
Like you said, it’s just wrong that they hire actress who dose not like or understand these princesses, they just assume that their story is only about love love love which proves how shallow their understanding is, I saw SnowWhite as an emotionally strong character who was able to pull herself together when the queen wanted to kill her, that’s very strong for a 14 years old girl.
Thanks for your support 💜

@@WondrousJoJo Honestly Halle acts more like Ariel in real life than the writers allowed her to act any time as Ariel.
@@sophieamandaleitontoomey9343Ariel never doxxed another woman's business by lying about racism to get people to harass her causing her to not to be able to work and provide for her family. Also Ariel is not a stuck up misandrist bigot who lied about Eric forcing himself on Ariel.

Side note: I love your pfp! The clouds and moon are beautiful!
"girls weren't allowed to read books" in the beauty and the beast remake made no sense:
1st. in the original the town didn't like belle because they didn't have anything in common with her
2nd. In the 1700s during the time Belle was living in, women were encouraged to read books in France
3rd. The original Beauty and the Beast children's books (not the disney version) the author was a french woman (no wonder why beauty and the beast has an appeal for female gaze 😅)
almost like this remake was way more sexist that the original Beauty and the Beast
You DEFINITELY gave me some homework to do, haha. Thanks for the insight!
I personally still believe that acting like this in public is part of the contract if you work for Disney. It may not be written down, but isn't it strange that this situation repeats itself everytime there is a new movie from this company?
I find it very strange, yes. I guess Disney figures that any publicity is good publicity. 😕
I don’t know much about Snow White but doesn’t she supposed to be more prettier than the evil queen.
👸🏻
I’ve had to explain many times that the princesses were great role models for me.
Thanks! I’m so glad someone is saying this! You’re the best.
Thanks, Ted!

Zegler called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are cartoon! What a pretentious jerk!
Yeah, I'm realizing that. It didn't really occur to me until just recently.
I'm a woman and I agree with you. I'm sick of these female actresses pushing the men aside and giving a toxic feminist image of my favorite princesses. I was angry when eric hero moments were pushed aside to make ariel an independent feminist character. Also beauty and the beast is one of my favorite movie

@@WondrousJoJo You're the hero we need, I can barely watch it even through the lens of your wonderful videos!
I love what you said in that first paragraph. That is exactly what Hollywood has been promoting with their female leads.
Tohru is my favorite character! Sure she's dumb but her positivity and determination to keep going even when things are hard is so inspiring!
That movie was vital in the world of animation.
the new Disney Princess remakes are gonna be mostly garbage

The box office is showing the frustration
Good!!

@StutteringWittyBlonde Thank you!
Thank you! I have been feeling the same but it seem no ones could see my point Dx
❤ the carnival music at the start, perfect fit!
Miyazaki films always have substance, and I feel that is what allows people to cherish them throughout time.
if ariel is truly her favorite princess, then im convinced shes GOT to be reading from a script telling her to bash the original movie in order to promote the new one... i wouldnt put anything past disney considering how hard they've been flopping lately, gotta do anything to get buzz 👸👸👸
I agree! There HAS to be people pulling strings for that ridiculous narrative.
👸🏻 thank you for sharing your thoughts and being brave enough to say something I’m too scared to do. I’m a cis white woman in the industry who absolutely feels the same way and hates the entitlement of these ladies who make it seem like the original character was somehow less than and not good enough of a feminist.
They're so annoying
A sensible argument in an insane world. It’s nice to hear. Thank you!
👸
You are most welcome! And thank you too!
I grew up watching a lot of the old Disney movies and snow white is one i enjoyed as a child. Shes disrespectful of the story.
Lol, I like your username.
And yeah, I have a great admiration for the classic films.
Another good video about what is going on with iconic Disney princesses. I am enjoying your series of videos and your thoughts on them.
Thank you so much! 💜
*high five*
🙌🏽
The prince in snow white much like Cinderella are limited in character development.
Not only do I agree but I am also subbing now🤣🙏
Hahaha, thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Is she wrong about the original? yes
absolutely
Do i have better things to do in life? Yes! Also absolutely
👸Thank you for the video! Loved your thoughts ☺
I appreciate it! 😊
Never misses a point and thank you for speaking truth I hope Disney sees this😊 To make movies like the ones we grew up with👸
Disagree about Emma Watson as Belle. Did you watch the other interviews where she speaks up against Stockolm Syndrome accusations? For me she pefectly embodied all the character
She is in no way a narcissist or entitled and actually respects fans of the original film. And she should not be compared to those other two arrogant self centered brats... is all about the community and themselves!
Thank you!!
I'll should definitely look into those 2 incidents you brought up!
@@lolidoll1194I only saw “TLM” live action remake once, but I’m quite certain that they did get married.
The queen bleeds on the snow because she is sitting in a window which has a frame of ebony

Few Strong Woman Characters are Liara TSoni (Mass Effect Series), Jill Valentine (Resident Evil Series not included Alice Movies), Claire Redfield (Resident Evil Series not included Alice Movies), Dr Rebecca Chambers (Resident Evil Series not included Alice Movies), Female Shepard (Mass Effect Series), Charlene Bradbury (Supernatural TVShow), Rain (Resident Evil Live Acting Movies are non canon)
Agreed.
Atleast Disney are keeping modern, LOVE MAKES US WEAK
Ugh, haha... that's a video topic I have planned for another day.
I could play Snow White better than this young actress
Cinderella and Snow White my favorite 🥰
😊
That thumbnail is hilarious. 😂
Thank you, lol. I really put effort into it.
I think a big part of this is the hatred of men by Greta Gerwig too
That’s the “Barbie Movie” director/writer, right?
I share all ur points. Loving ur channel
Thank you
0:04- Such a dumb statement. The film was released in 1937, Snow White was born in the 14th century Germany.
I agree. The story takes place long, long ago, and the movie is supposed to reflect that time, not 1937.
I don´t care as much for the actors, if they play the role they play the role you don´t have to like the role to play it. But the opinion they are sharing in interviews are the companies, the movie makers opinion and quidelines, that is the problem when the ones who wanna make it are the ones thinking "Yes we will fix this Classic Movie loved for generation but now we don´t think it works anymore let´s forget about it."
The Actress have no say in how the character is potrayed, they can influence it but Ariel would have been written the same way no matter who they cast the only slight diffrence is the skill of the actress.
Right. It’s like people forget that DreamWorks and other animation studios exist.
I have another video planned for the future that'll hold yet another remake accountable.
👸
Only 30 to 40 seconds into this video and I got tired of listening to what those girls were saying😫
How can these three be talking about three different movies and characters and sound exactly as if they're talking about the same movie and character?! Oh wait. I know the answer: Disney run out of ides the moment the Cinderella live action was a success and now they are just ruining everything.
She is a grossly overrated Karen, really. Did you hear about what she did to the nail salon lady? That incident is kind of old but you should probably do a video addressing that.
👸 Well said
