After you watch this video, you should check out Tony's commentary on it. He expands upon my thought process and has a great perspective on additional tips students can take. Definitely worth a watch! ruclips.net/video/wIyRH1tn9S8/видео.html

Would you recommend to add more about program specific at the end? When you say personalized the LOI, do you mean personalized the part why you want to pursue the residency?

I think adding program-specific parts anywhere is good. If anything, throughout the entire LOI would be ideal. You want to essentially pitch why youre interested in that specific program and why they may be a good fit for you. As for personalized, i mean being slightly less formal in your word choice and open to sharing stories that help tell your why/desire to pursue residency. Hope that helps!

Is it possible for a pharmacist that has been out of school and working retail for a bit to go back and complete a residency? Is the process different from going straight from school? I would love to work w. physicians in hospitals but I find having a residency will prepare me as supposed to applying straight to hospital.

Hi Mary. It is certainly possible, but the statistics on match rates for individuals applying to residencies after working for awhile isn't excellent. For example, for the ASHP 2020 Match, individuals who were NOT 2020 graduates (i.e. pre-2020), the match rate was 35.4% (176/497) for PGY-1 and 57.5% (50/87) for PGY-2. Compare this to 2020 graduates (2019 for PGY-2) where it was 65.5% (3728/5688) for PGY-1 and 74.5% (814/1092) for PGY-2. The process isn't different from going straight from school, to my understanding. You still use Phorcas to apply and would submit the same application materials. There are lots of pros and cons to applying to residency vs. applying to a hospital. I have friends in both categories and they have all done well :)

Tell me about PGY 1 application process for international students

I’m unfortunately not as familiar with the application process for international students. I’ve always found it to be institution-specific, in which each one decides whether or not they will take them and may have their own additional processes for applying. I’d suggest researching which programs you’re interested in and reaching out to the respective RPDs for information. Hope that helps!

Would you recommend keeping the same header from your CV (ie. Your big name + address/number/email) or just dating it, the name + address of the institute and starting the letter? I've seen both ways. :O

I prefer the latter. It’s more aligned with formal business/technical writing. Though, personally, i don’t pay much attention to that - I just review the content of the letter :).
