    Great video🎉 I think that some people have so much to say that they need multiple avenues to say it. Lenny’s photography could stand on its own even if he wasn’t a musician. Joni Mitchell’s painting stands alone alongside her iconic song writing. I don’t know how they do it, but I’m grateful that they do! So inspiring

    "respectfully declining or ignoring suggestions you guys have made on certain fashion photographers." Looking forward to the channel getting into the reasons for that resistance and how fashion photography, rather than individual photographers who ply that trade, fit into the larger arc of photography history. There are parallels with photo journalism in that there is a prominent commercial element, but that element exists to some degree in almost all creative endeavors. To me it comes down to intention. But while I might reflexively dismiss some fashion photography because of what I might see as crass intentions and little else, it is hard to ignore when wildly talented people are serving up visceral images. 😅Yeah, sometimes I'm a sucker for a pretty picture.

    Thanks for another great and entertaining video. I'm hooked on B&W myself. A couple years ago, I had a contract gig that netted me some good money. I spent this on a Leica M10M.
    And I've been hooked ever since. I"m also now, shooting old medium format cameras, 99% B&W ...from square to 6x17 panos.
    The Paul Simon song, Kodachrome had it all wrong, IMHO the world looks better in Black and White!! ;)

    What was most interesting about your short video documentaries is your look at song writers, actors, actresses, singers and other celebrities, who use photography capture a small part of the world. For some, photography was an extension of their creativity, as with one singer/song writer, it was one way of bringing thoughts and ideas to life. Much like a music video for MTV or VH1 back in the 1980s. Lenny Kravitz's photographing the paparazzi and his fans photographing him is terrific. Who is watching the watchers?! Thankfully, you don't have any how to videos that are more click habit than instructional video. Keep the fine work when possible.

    I think he is much MUCH better musician than photographer. I’ve seen one nice image here, most of is very average. The sad thing is that because of his rock status average becomes seen as a pinnacle. We see that also with AI generated art these days, which buy the way is excellent. But everyone else if falling apart thinking humans cannot match or surpass that. Humans can and have done that easily, just look at the history and the classics. But, because of the times we live in, average has became exalted and is most what humans can artistically achieve it seems.

    Hola.

  • @YTviewer118
    @YTviewer118 2 года назад +1

    I'm going to get a lot of shtick for this but here goes. In my own personal opinion, I find a huge hypocrisy in the photography world and what is accepted versus what is not. A user below commented "Lenny’s photography could stand on its own even if he wasn’t a musician" - I couldn't disagree further, despite photography being one of the most freeing and selfless crafts out there it is still such a heavily saturated, difficult and critical avenue to navigate. Any old joe taking photos like those in the videos would never get the recognition they deserve (and yes, any old joe CAN take photos like the above), we all know how Instagram has turned into a mass competition that it's almost impossible to make a name for yourself on it anymore. If I took the above photos into an art gallery asking to exhibit a collection, I'd be laughed at, but if anyone with any amount of fame takes a photo, they're praised, congratulated, even celebrated for their incredible talents and work. Photography for me is no longer about sharing with the world, but instead an intimate form of self preservation and memory capture to hold with me throughout my life.

    • @TatianaHopper
      @TatianaHopper  2 года назад

      You’re not getting shtick for me, I respect people’s opinions, in the video I’m very objective as a presentation unfolds and think it’s good to take the example of documenting life. With that being said I respect everyone’s opinions and I won’t say I disagree with you cheers for sharing your thoughts ✨

    I am a self taught documentary photographer by working on a 12 year project documenting Black American life in my Harlem community. I was a fan of his music and purchased his first and second albums. I thought he was a talented musician just behind Prince or Sly and the Family Stone. As his work as a photographer, he was very fortunate to have a father as a conflict photographer, though only a year, and, to be around very good professional photographers to help nurture the talent he has. I believe his strongest work is of the Paparazzi. As a photographer, we only show our best work. I am suspect of how many poor images he created to achieve the one shown in your video. I understand his statement about photographing humanity. My project was to show black people and my community in particular against the stereotype and to tap in to its humanity. I don't know how good he really is as a photographer as it takes many years just to get the basics right, particularly street photography which I avoid because it is so very difficult to make great, not average images, consistently.

    Yep. We all have different reasons for photographing and for some of us, it is about the feeling. And this episode and your discussion of this series made me realize that it's okay to express our artistic feeling in different ways, through different formats or, as in many photographers' case, through making photos of different subject matter and expressing our feeling in different visual styles/voices. (It is often said that to be a successful photographer one should focus on one style/subject matter, but, at least for em, that would mean suppressing that feeling that draws me to all kindsa stuff.) As you said, you love B&W (and I agree) but sometimes color is central, sometimes the image we capture is all about the color (and light and shape and feeling). Sometimes a photo's feeling is all about the color.
    Re artists who were successful in different art forms and who were fashion photographers, there is Cecil Beaton, who actually was not only a fashion photographer and WWII photojournalist, but he was also a fashion/costume designer. His most famous film costume (and set) designs were for My Fair Lady. Beaton followed his feeling.
    Anyway, thank you so much, again.

    As Andy Warhole like to say: "So What!" The funnier one was the guy from that stupid overrated Canadian band The Baby's, Brian Adams as a street photographer. Now there s a guy that wrote a song about 1969, and he was 9 yrs old in 1969. 10 points for good marketing, -10 for sincerity. Brian Adams taking a a candid picture of Sean Penn smiling. Well that kinda makes my point. Self Rightchous rock singers! Would somebody please reinvent 1976 punk bands, and make them break up after 2 years, with a clause No Solo Career's. So What his father was some kind of journalist. I like your shows. Please don't send me any shows that feature, Rock Stars, Royalty of any kind, or actors. Actors are ok if they were retired by 1968. I hope that if you read this far well thank you. I would like to see you do a show about Marget Bourke White of Life Magazine. That woman is one of the most amazing, darring, and interesting photographers to walk the Earth!. I'd like to understand what she wanted from her photography. Her ww2 experience, her friendship with Mahatma Ghandie. He was one of the greatest men to stomp on the Terra. You did that show about Fan Ho I am now a photographer that studies Fan Ho. Lenny Cravitz wants to get away? I wish he would. Go hang out with Snoop Dog in Maui., They could all go for a long trip on Sean Penn's Yacht. I would never have to remember them again. I could laugh and say, you guessed it: "SO WHAT". Now thx 4 reminding me . I'm going to look at some more of Fan Ho' s pictures. Also I like Dean Tucker's, and that show Zen Photography alot.

    I wouldn't say he's an amazing photographer. He knows what he's doing. Many photographers past 10yrs usually get that. Only a few stuck out as great. Most looked like photo journaling. Like street photography, but more methodical. Like street photography, looks like he showcases BW. BW works for many photos and subjects, but I bet many of them had been in color and the interest would have plummeted. Probably because you would see the bright colored clothes or items around a restaurant or public place to falsely believe it isn't year 2000+. I mean, I ONLY listen to music in mono. That way his songs and every other song sounds 40 years older.

    I heard that having a Leica will make you a great photographer. I just wanted a camera that said "Leica" somewhere on it and put gaffer tape over the red dot.

      That is absolutely not true. I, for example, am an average photographer. My pictures aren't great. And yet I just purchased a brand new Leica. You know why? Because I have bucket loads of cash! Does it make me a better photographer? Absolutely not! Is it fun to use? Oh yes! Do I cover the red Leitz logo? Yes I do. Do I care about what everybody thinks? Hell no! :)

    He's good.....good video too. 👍 Must be difficult for him to do any candid work on the street in a major city without drawing attention to himself... and with a $20K Leica he would need a bodyguard....photographers are a major target for crime here in SF 😎

      Ahhaha very true I kept thinking about it Joseph if I would ever go on the streets with a 20k camera given that it can be either robbed or fallen victim of my own clumsiness 😂

    Not only film ia made with animal suffering, they go and make a camera with snake skin. This world is really fucked up.

      Hey Magnum, thank you for your concerns just wanted to let you know that Lenny Kravitz shoots only with digital cameras and on Leica’s own website it states that it’s faux snake skin :)
