Tyvek is a really interesting material. Not woven but bonded together and used in the construction industry as a waterproof membrane. It makes sense as a lightweight camping material.
I have the same Lanshan 1 Pro and typically position my head by the door. I have found that it makes it easier to access my pack outside under the vestibule. Don’t believe there is a right or wrong way just a preference. Thanks for another quality video. 🤙
Feet first is my preference, otherwise you are fighting with the pole getting in or out . Tyvek bivi also acts as wind barrier on those wild and windy nights.
I totally see the benefit of the body bag. On a recent hike, I had the bottom of my down sleeping bag in my rain trousers and my rain jacket over my legs and body due to heavy condensation. And I got up three times during the night to wipe down the tent. It was raining heavy for 4 days, no wind and 12-15C.
Makes sense to go in head first and take off mucky boots once you're part way inside. Haven't camped for years but my tent is a tunnel style and I want to go in head first but have to sleep with my head at the door as that's the highest point. Getting turned inside isn't easy when you have a belly and an inflexible middle aged body 😄
Looks a cracking tent Ben, I really like the bivi/sleeping bag cover…looks like a useful piece of kit…hopefully the big fella might put one under my tree…ATB Luke👍
nice work around with the 3F UL Tyvek sleeping bag cover to keep the moisture away from bag/quilt. Winter camping can create a fair amount of condensation unless I use my Pomoly stove, so I will have to give it a look see. With the tent I usually have my head at the door end so in the mornings I can roll to my side to do my coffee without getting out of the bag. Helpful give-away I don't need the foil mat I already use one.
Good stuff Ben. I've got the original Lanshan 1 and I slept than way as well. It's not seen light of day since it's maiden outing up Malham with Ginger Bushcraft (see the video). My ankles just wont allow me to back pack any more, that's why my trips are now on the bike, or woodland hammock camps 100 yards from the car. Budget gear for the win!
Good to see you out testing the gear, especially the Lanshan. Personally, i think that condensation issue would do my head in over time, especially on the really cold winter evenings/mornings when it turns to ice. I'd also be interested in how that sleeping system holds up in the winter, maybe with a different sleeping bag? Might have to invest in the Tyvek bag, I've been looking at the SOL Escape bivvy which is more expensive but has brilliant reviews. Thanks again, happy camping!
I don't need anymore camping gear........ So don't tell the wife! After years in a 1 man (& getting older!) I now prefer the comfort & space of my naturehike mongar 2 man. Really fancy the lanshan 2 though. To save a bit more have a go at using a car windscreen cover instead of the foil. I usually get them for under £2 & they do just as good a job
I think a small bottle of Tabasco counts as emergency anti-bland kit. I wonder how these type of meals stack up against Pot Noodle with regards to taste to value.
@@boldmeregarden637 A good question, IMO the Sharwoods Pot Rice/Curry taste better than any dehydrated/freeze dried camping meal I've ever tried and regular Pot Noodles at least aren't bland. I don't understand how the some dedicated camping meals can be so bland, 4 + times more expensive than shop bought cup pasta/noodles and they can't afford to season them properly?? come on Agree on the Tobasco, salt and pepper sachets or some curry powder help too
I’ve got the Lanshan 2 pro. Used it on West Highland Way this year brilliant loads of room and very light just have to mop up the condensation in the morning 👍🏻
Nice reviews. Very helpful. Thanks! I was tempted to buy the pro, but it seems that the lighter tent doesn't make sense if you need to carry additional items (bivvy, cloth, etc.) to mitigate against condensation. I'm in Scotland, so I'll get the double wall version!
The foil mats are great I’ve got a 200x150, but I folded it in half and stitched it together so it’s the size of yours it’s a bit bulky but works brilliantly with my mountain equipment 3.8 helium mat which I bagged about 4 years ago for £38.00. At cotswolds in an offer still keeps me toastie…. I also have an Andes bivvi bag which was a bargain at about £13.00 I use it like you use the tyvek cover, you can insulate pretty well without spending a small fortune 8) great vid…
@@nialloutdoors depends on the situation I’ve used it with a down bag while cowboy camping and it’s been fine I’ve used as extra insulation in a tent and had a little condo, but in winter it’s usually fine as extra insulation condensation is always gonna be a factor, that’s just physics.. the Andes bag does what it says on the tin, it’s pretty big with a great side zipper mines deffo water proof cuz I fabsiled it… for the price is not such a bad thing weight is about 240grams as I remember I also have the Andes 4 season bag to for £25 ! It’s a 3 season at best but works well in the cold with the bivvy bag

First time viewer here, and subbed 👍 Tried out my new Lanshan 1 Plus (new size for 2021 ) on Fri night...just in the garden. I went for the T-zip so I have a choice of what end to sleep at depending on the ground/pitch. After sleeping out the 1st night I left it up for a couple more days and the condensation got really bad when it was below 0 degrees, ice on the outer fly..it was very still with no wind but I'll be camping in fair weather in spring/ summer so hopefully it won't be a problem for me 🤞. (2) where does the wind come from? - So, it is annoying that the Lanshan 1 Pro has a j-zip rather than a T, as that means quite often I have to go head in first.
Had to laugh at ‘Body Bag’ ! 😂 …. Very useful if everything failed and you froze to death 🤣 gotta luv the way that Lanshan blends into the landscape eh !?!? … proper stealth 👍👍… thanks for testing the kit so we don’t have to 👍👍…. Great video … ATB Dave Mc
Great video as ever - happy for you to try before I buy !! I have however bought a highlander 1 man tent ( even cheaper ) and I will let you know how I get on with that when I test it ( probably only in the garden to begin with )

Good choice of gear be interesting to see how that mat holds up, Lanshan 1 plus is only 70g heavier and will reduced condensation @novicewildcamper will attest to that , nice one 👌
Head 1st on the way in, feet 1st on the way out. I like the look if the Lanshan 1 but would go for the 2 skin version myself. Not sure about the sleeping bag cover though, if it isn't breathable it'll trap moisture inside your sleeping bag, I'd take a chance that the DWR on the sleeping bag coped with condensation dripping off the inside of the flysheet and if required drape my waterproof jacket over the foot end of the sleeping bag if it was likely to contact the flysheet.
Iv been thinking about getting that lighttour mat because it says alumumized layer on it to reflect heat but it looks rather thin. I might just save and get a klymit insulated static v and use it over my foil mat. I have a foil mat, a couple of trail brand self inflating mats, a ryaco 10cm thick summer mat, a cheap £20 amazon mat and a widesea thermarest sol lite clone from ali express. I probably could combine my mats for a adequate r value. Thanks for saving me money on that mat. 🙏
The Lanshan 1 Pro - I own it - IMHO is not suitable for the UK. If I have to take my heavier synthetic sleeping bag or a body bag with me, I could just take a double-wall tent for a similar weight penalty but more comfort. - I will still take it out on warm, windy, dry days (do we ever have them in the UK?) but otherwise, I’m looking for an alternative in the 1.5kg range. - Also, being 6ft1in, the tent is long enough but not high enough. It is nearly impossible to get up without wiping the tent wall with my head.

Yes i get camping gear from aldis and its good quality well made gear. Usually from that crane brand. Iv bought hiking socks, gloves, sleeping pad,waterproof socks, summer sleeping bag and many accessories. Definitely recommended.
Just looking at the 'Lilo' you are using. I'm a bit of an 'original Thermarest fan' but have used inflatables in the caravan awning often. I found that not inflating it to max (3/4 - 7/8) is a great aid to overall comfort. It seems to mould better. How have you found that? Talking of food disappointments - I tried pre-cooking my own meals and using Mylar bags (giving the same effect as sealed sachets) and felt that not only were they cheaper per meal but I got the taste that I put into them,
I saw the stove wobble and wondered if you’d ever tried one of those AliX folding stove stands, if seen some reviews where the plastic ones are low quality and snap but I’ve also seen metal ones on AliX never seen one reviewed
I usually use my table to stand the stove on but wanted to keep it low here too keep some distance from the tent. I’ve thrown one of the clip on plastic things back in my bag now 👍
Do tree branches not fall down on campers in the UK? Where I come from, one of the things they tell you NOT to do is to pitch a tent under tree branches, because they could come down and kill you in your sleep in wind or bad weather.
Would it not be better to put the foil mat underneath the tent groundsheet? That way you get the thermal benefits as well as protecting your groundsheet from the odd sharp twig etc?

The kit advice is how you found it. Fair enough. Consider your audience and their perceived skill level and how they will receive what you are telling them. See below re comment reply - A Watt. It's Black Friday and this tent would be 152€ delivered for me. Gossamer Gear has a sale too and The One would be 300usd with shipping. With taxes and customs probably close to 380€ for me. No seam sealing needed and I think it might be better ventilated. I don't know if it's that much better tbh that it justifies me spending twice as much... what do you think?
No idea mate. I wouldn’t spend that much on a tent though TBH. Is it taped seams? I wouldn’t worry about doing it on the Lanshan it’s a 20 minute job 👍
I have this tent and have used it during 2021. It’s waterproof, yet condensation was a real problem. In a normal night it drained away, but one night there was heavy rain and when it struck the outside of the tent it made the condensation fall like rain inside. I needed up covering my down sleeping bag with a poncho as a waterproof layer. I’m 1m 83 and the tent is too small for me. I can lie down fine but if I move slightly in the night then the condensation drains onto my sleeping bag. I can’t sit up properly either. I tried cooking in the vestibule in bad weather but was scared of burning the tent down by accident. I have now not the Lanshan 2 instead, but not used it yet. The build quality of the tent is great, I just made a mistake buying a single skinned tent that was too small for me.

Check the feedback for the seller first. The tents would be double the price if the manufacturer sealed them. For the sake of 20 minutes to do it yourself it’s really not a big issue. I don’t own any inner pitch tents anymore, but most can be pitched outer first if you get the footprint (though it is a faff)

Recently camped on a soggy embankment of an elevated mountain loch in Scotland. A length of radiator foil helped enormously (£6.60 for 4m).
I have that tent. To help prevent condensation, pitch the tent 2-3 inches from the ground for air circulation.

I have a foil mat, a couple of trail brand self inflating mats, a ryaco 10cm thick summer mat, a cheap £20 amazon mat and a widesea thermarest sol lite clone from ali express. I probably could combine my mats for a adequate r value. Thanks for saving me money on that mat. 🙏
The Lanshan 1 Pro - I own it - IMHO is not suitable for the UK. If I have to take my heavier synthetic sleeping bag or a body bag with me, I could just take a double-wall tent for a similar weight penalty but more comfort. - I will still take it out on warm, windy, dry days (do we ever have them in the UK?) but otherwise, I’m looking for an alternative in the 1.5kg range. - Also, being 6ft1in, the tent is long enough but not high enough. It is nearly impossible to get up without wiping the tent wall with my head.

Yes i get camping gear from aldis and its good quality well made gear. Usually from that crane brand. Iv bought hiking socks, gloves, sleeping pad,waterproof socks, summer sleeping bag and many accessories. Definitely recommended.
Just looking at the 'Lilo' you are using. I'm a bit of an 'original Thermarest fan' but have used inflatables in the caravan awning often. I found that not inflating it to max (3/4 - 7/8) is a great aid to overall comfort. It seems to mould better. How have you found that?
Talking of food disappointments - I tried pre-cooking my own meals and using Mylar bags (giving the same effect as sealed sachets) and felt that not only were they cheaper per meal but I got the taste that I put into them,
I tend to sleep better on a harder/inflated mat, but I keep my pillow half inflated and find that much better 👍

I saw the stove wobble and wondered if you’d ever tried one of those AliX folding stove stands, if seen some reviews where the plastic ones are low quality and snap but I’ve also seen metal ones on AliX never seen one reviewed
I usually use my table to stand the stove on but wanted to keep it low here too keep some distance from the tent. I’ve thrown one of the clip on plastic things back in my bag now 👍

Do tree branches not fall down on campers in the UK? Where I come from, one of the things they tell you NOT to do is to pitch a tent under tree branches, because they could come down and kill you in your sleep in wind or bad weather.
Yes they do - that’s why I don’t pitch directly under large branches 😊 They call them ‘widow makers’

Would it not be better to put the foil mat underneath the tent groundsheet? That way you get the thermal benefits as well as protecting your groundsheet from the odd sharp twig etc?

Depends on the tent really. I think most single skinned are unsealed but some may be. Double skin should be taped.

An observation. From your own words, you are trying out the gear to review so we, the great subscribers do not make mistakes. Great! Think about the advice you are providing. The kit advice is how you found it. Fair enough. Consider your audience and their perceived skill level and how they will receive what you are telling them. See below re comment reply - A Watt. The previous review on the waterproof designed for trail runners is another example.
Reviewing kit and giving advice bears a great responsibility.

I'd always use double skin now. Single skin is 'ok' for dry, warm climates but suffers from condensation in anything else.

It's Black Friday and this tent would be 152€ delivered for me. Gossamer Gear has a sale too and The One would be 300usd with shipping. With taxes and customs probably close to 380€ for me. No seam sealing needed and I think it might be better ventilated. I don't know if it's that much better tbh that it justifies me spending twice as much... what do you think?
No idea mate. I wouldn’t spend that much on a tent though TBH. Is it taped seams? I wouldn’t worry about doing it on the Lanshan it’s a 20 minute job 👍

Hard to say mate - it was a mild night and the first time using the Lanshan. I’ll keep testing it but don’t imagine it would add much.

Tents are like women's fashions, the less there is of it the more you pay. I always make my own foods so I know what's in it.
I have this tent and have used it during 2021.
It’s waterproof, yet condensation was a real problem. In a normal night it drained away, but one night there was heavy rain and when it struck the outside of the tent it made the condensation fall like rain inside. I needed up covering my down sleeping bag with a poncho as a waterproof layer.
I’m 1m 83 and the tent is too small for me. I can lie down fine but if I move slightly in the night then the condensation drains onto my sleeping bag. I can’t sit up properly either.
I tried cooking in the vestibule in bad weather but was scared of burning the tent down by accident.
I have now not the Lanshan 2 instead, but not used it yet. The build quality of the tent is great, I just made a mistake buying a single skinned tent that was too small for me.
Yes for most camps and situations the Lanshan 2 is the one to go for. I’m just trying to find the lightest setup I can for a (relatively) low budget 👍

I don’t think £140 is nearly £200… it’s cheap compared to most other ‘ultralight’ tents.

Check the feedback for the seller first. The tents would be double the price if the manufacturer sealed them. For the sake of 20 minutes to do it yourself it’s really not a big issue. I don’t own any inner pitch tents anymore, but most can be pitched outer first if you get the footprint (though it is a faff)
