Yeah, in the end, it all just kinda seems like tributes and references. Another example, again with Emarosa, is one of my favourite songs from them, Re. One of Bradley's voices sings "This is the last night in my body" which exactly mirrors the same line in the chorus of The Receiving End of Sirens's "Planning a Prison Break." I love both songs so honestly it's just so pleasant to listen to.
What about that part in Chocolate Jackalope when they say "you use to call me on my cellphone"? you could say they are ripping off Drake in the middle of the song but it's a parody, it's done with another intention and that changes the way you think of it
Billy Talent - This Suffering (at around 2:26) I The Mighty - The Lying Eyes of Miss Erray (1:16) The vocals are almost identical melodically and lyrically. "Misery won't get the best of me"/ "Misery, you won't get the best of me"
Make Me Famous - Blind Date 101 Songs it ripped off from Pierce The Veil - Million Dollar House Asking Alexandria- When Everyday’s the Weekend Asking Alexandria- A Prophecy
HI Mikerisms and everyone here. I am very glad I've found this channel and been a fan of both DGD and FOT. However, I really suck at playing guitar and I have always been wondering what kind of basic skills should be focused/ to start with if I'd like to produce vibes like the aforementioned bands. My guitar level is at Green Day.
Jarrod Alonge had a comedy band at one point where he was making original music parodying alternative music trope and a band called High Down literally copied the entire structure of his song "First World Tragedy" with their song "Families and Friend" to the point where they had to take down their own song due to backlash. You can see them being compared on Jarrod video called "I've been accused of treachery" lol
Of Machines didn’t rip off, hahaha. they were DGD fans/Emarosa fans. If I remember correctly, before Of Machines, they were called Their Eyes Look North, in reference to a DGD track from DBM! That Of Machines track is my favorite because it takes a nod at Emarosa. How times has changed, haha
Flutter by Tilian, and Blow Me by PINK. Also came out incredibly close to each other with Tilian writing for ages on the album. If I remember there's another Material Me track that has this effect, but that's just pop music for you.
Silent Planet - Inhabit the Wound song motif with Thrice - For Miles at 00:58 Although im sure this is intentional, both christian band, same themes, what a cool reference! Reach inside - heal the wound - make us whole. and Open the wounds and share them then soon they start to heal
listen to "caliban - crystal skies" and "architects - dead man talking", "asking alexandria - the death of me" the am i insane part sounds like avenged sevenfold - almost easy "im not insane" and blessthefall five ninety and escape the fate the aftermath (3) with the "im coming home" sing-alongs
i've dig some fall of troy and the first their song i heard i was like: What? the starting riff of After the Burial - Neo Seoul is absolutely stolen from starting riff of The Fall of Troy - F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.
I can't really A/B it right now but from a quick listen I can see the similarity but the way they flow is completely different and it's a single guitar lick.
anyone notice how chelsea grin, thy art is murder, and few other bands copied BMTH breakdown point where oli says"the doctors wont be able to recognize your face"
I’ve always thought Asking Alexandria’s The Prophecy and Agraceful’s In Oceans have very similar lyrics and melodies. “Oh my god. The water is rising/getting higher ” literally a lyric in both songs
Hey man. I know this is almost a year old now but I just remembered a song from my guitar playin days that I remember hearing/playing and then later hearing again but this time, done by a different band and it really blew me away how similar they were. The tracks in question are "The Hive" by In Flames (Whoracle 1997) and the other is "Right Side of the Bed" by Atreyu (The Curse 2004). Hope you enjoy!
Now I won't be able to remember for the life of me but I used to keep a mental tally of songs all using variations of one particular riff from an early Avenged Sevenfold record. Something off of Waking the Fallen -- I think it was Unholy Confessions. Whatever song it's in, I've heard similar riffs in maybe 4 different tunes now. I want to say Asking Alexandria is one of the bands who've used this riff I'm referring to. I'm certain there are more but like I said the exact details currently escape me. Edit: Unholy Confessions by A7X & If You Can't Ride Two Horses by AA for the example. The above example is much more akin to accidental riff references. Not only are there limited options for musicians when working in certain genres in certain keys, but so much of music is subconscious. So much work comes from just riffing and feeling what sounds good. And this means it's surprisingly simple for people to stumble across a tune they love without realizing it's being taken -- at least in part -- from a musician elsewhere. All of this I can certainly accept as part of music and musicianship. However, I have pondered about the Of Machines / Emarosa line before and I've googled it to find nobody really talking about it. Though Of Machines isn't around or popular enough today to warrant any attention to such a thing. That example seems far more intentional than the usual accidental riff ripping. What sets the Emarosa example apart is the almost identical phrasing, syllable placement, and exact same lyrics in some spots. There most certainly was some plagiarism there.
I feel like this happens more when you have the same studio/label/producer working on different records. Anyone know if there's any overlap in other people who were involved with the albums?
I think it’s something that’s going to occur more and more often as music progresses through time. There are only so many keys and note orders that can be done. I could be wrong and would love to be proved wrong if I am incorrect.
There are 479,001,600 different note combinations just playing the 12 notes of a single octave, and that's without repeating a single note. Multiply that by the 10 octaves the human ears can perceive, then break each of those octaves down into melodic possibilities and you have brain meltingly high numbers, that's without repeating a note or using any two or more notes at once. Basically it's tending towards an infinite combination of possibilities with the 12 musical notes we've created in western music. The problem is, most of those combinations sound bad because of how keys and harmonies work. So that does narrow it down to a few trillion possibilities. It pretty much comes down to the growth of western music and the common keys and chords and chord progressions, and our ear's tendency to prefer certain melodies and phrases. It's like time signatures, 4/4 has become the norm whereas 7/8 has a disjointed feel and is less palatable. All in all the mathematics says there are infinite posibilites so they will never be repeated, but in the real world us tiny brained humans tend to like the same chords and melodies because that's what we've conditioned ourselves to enjoy. Man that was a long one, I enjoy this subject as you can tell 😂 sorry for the essay, I should make a follow up video, haha!
That's funny! I've always thought about that part of 'Becoming closer to closure' sounding very similar to 'I still feel her pt 1'. I didn't think anyone else caught that.
i cant remember what norma jean song it was but they ripped of thrice- under a killing moon and just changed the bridge and lyrics but it had the same breaks and stops lol
Of machines was originally named open your eyes and look north after the dgd song. So yes they were hella dgd inspired and it’s a shame they disbanded. I actually noticed this too on my own but I’m glad to see other people have too
Miss Murder by AFI & Holiday by Green Day. The main riff to both songs are almost identical just different tuning & tempo & slightly different chord progressions
Haha, this is exactly how people should react, you summed it up perfectly you wonderful human!! WATCH THE VIDEO before getting butthurt about the title 😂 I love you!!
One that I know of is on Innuendo, the last album that Queen did before Freddie Mercury passed away, there's a song called "The Hitman," that the intro sounds almost entirely like the chorus riff of "Shout At The Devil" by Motley Crue. Not an exact ripoff, but the same type of chord progression and similar rhythm. The Hitman is in Eb Minor and Shout At The Devil is in C Major, but that riff is still very similar.
Blink 182 - Waggy // Unwritten Law - Teenage Suicide. Similar riffs, and funny that Scott Russo worked on the dude ranch album and the UL album came out a year later.
Taking Back Sunday and Brand New, "I hope you think of me when you forget your seatbelt" and all that lyrical content from Seventy Times 7 and TBS' "theres no I in team"
I’ve always found the opening guitar to Thrice’s Blood Clots and Black Holes very similar to Avenged Sevenfold’s Unholy Confessions. Slightly different, but they feel closely related. Both very enjoyable in their own right.
As I was told about plagiarism and copyright, apparently by law everyone is fine to use someone else's stuff (not saying it's ok) but can only use it within a certain number of notes or for a certain amount of time in the piece of music. That's how songs from pop, rap and dj's are ok to use other artist's music, they are only allowed and use a snippet of the song. An example would be most of Pitbull's music, which uses snippets from other songs. Aside from that, if you know Swan his playing is clearly influenced by Thomas Erak of TFoT. So this can also be a small nod to TFoT or Thomas. You can't say TFoT have not influenced DGD's music aswell.
The band Thursday (my favorite band) has a 2009 song called "Love Has Led Us Astray" that is a slower version of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" with different lyrics and minor differences. It's plagiarism I tell you!!!v(In all serious in case no way gets sarcasm. Thursday has made it know since day one Joy Division is a major inspiration. The songs are very different except for one way a lyric is sung.)
Thanks Mike for sharing this. My mind goes crazy whenever I hear part of a song that reminds me of another and I am glad you did a video on it. There are RUclips videos that match up American country songs and it is interesting to see how similar they are (in some cases only the lyrics seem to change). I used to think this was a negative thing but I don't feel that way so much anymore. The negative side of me says its corporations, greed, etc. driving people to make similar sounding music to music that has already sold. The positive side of me says these people find joy and peace in certain sounds and use those sounds to express their own stories. For me, I love the post hardcore sound and I enjoy that there are bands that explore new sounds, and bands that are inspired by someone else's sound and mimic them until they can find their own voice. To end this ramble I will just say that I trust DGD and believe they love music waaaaayyyy to much to ever just outright and intentionally steal someone else's sound. Additionally, when they do like someone else's sound they do a collaboration with them or cite them on the album/coverage of album (I am thinking about how much Chino influenced the song they had him on) and if they wanted to use fall of Troy's sound, I don't think that would have been a hard collaboration to set up:) Also wouldn't it just be sweet to write a song that incorporated those aspects you listed in you video from a song that changed you or influenced you and would that be stealing or showing love and appreciation for someone?
The intro guitar riff from "The Robot With Human Hair Pt. 1" is very similar to an old Emarosa demo "Too Close For Missiles, I'm Switching To Guns". Also: "The Kid's Aren't Alright" by The Offspring (~20sec in) and "Reverse This Curse" by Escape The Fate (~6sec in) and "No Future" by Blink 182 (during the na na na part)
Emmure’s “Rusted Over Wet Dreams” took the entire song structure from The Acacia Strain’s “Smoke Ya Later” It became such a thing that it caused a massive beef between the two bands. TAS even wrote a song about it called “Skynet”
Billy in 4C Never Saw it Coming by Motionless in White and You Already Know What You Are by A Day to Remember both use an almost identical pre breakdown sample.
Wow! I love both of those albums & because the tone of the songs are different I NEVER noticed the plagiarism. Since the Of Machines song has a lot of echo & production that makes it feel unique I never realized it was the same exact melody as I still feel her part 1. Great great catch man!
tbh i smiled when you mentioned Of Machines, they were one of my favorite bands in high school and I listened to that album quite a lot. I thought everyone basically forgot about them since they were a one off and not incredibly popular.
I used to think “Broken vs the way we were born” sounded like a Nero song at the beginning like 2808 or Innocence but it’s just a similar start but not the same
what's interesting as well is Slaves (JC's current band) has a song with the lyrics "Getting Closer to Closure", which on it's own I would've dismissed, but now it seems like quite the coincidence
We Came As Romans - To Plant A Seed - 2009 "To be devoted to letting all see" ruclips.net/video/KjVQHBLJhO4/видео.html I SEE STARS - Electric Forest (ft. Cassadee Pope) - 2012 "I'll be the person to let us all see" ruclips.net/video/0CCztM6u07k/видео.html
Not sure if this was done on purpose but the band “Dads” has a song called “Big Bag of Sandwiches” and it’s shares the same lyrics/vocal melodies with the song “We’re Really Jazzed About the Gig” by Wavelets. Always wondered if it was a knack at each other.
Suicide season from BMTH and Avalanche from TGI both have the same intro theme (same chord progressions, slightly different melodies). Even the Vocal FX are strikingly similar lol
Back in the days of Happiness I saw DGD at the squash the beef tour and Kurt was talking with a sound tech about how he's ripped off a lot of old classic music.
The main riff from "massacre"- escape the fate always sounded like a slower "Chelsea smiles" - bring me the horizon And dont even get me started with asking alexandrias first album and make me famous 😂 theres trillions of songs out there this is bound to happen
I dont know but In Angles' song "foothills" remind mo so much of CHON's "fluffy".. the last part of the song sounds a lot like "bubble dream"'s last part.. In fact.. The whole album of In Angles (not sure if it's called cascading or cascade") sounds like CHON's new born sun with vocals.. Love those two bands btw.. Lol
I didn't know about Of Machines before this video. I went and checked their album out. I hear so many similarities to Underoath in the guitar and bass riffs. Specifically from the "Define the Great Line" album. I can't be the only one.
I just remembered one that I've been thinking of for a long while. It's very short, but the similarity is striking: The Voidz' song QYURRYUS has a part that's played on the keyboard (I think) at about 1:57 in the song, it's about 7 notes long. That tiny melody reminds me a lot of Daft Punk's Veridis Quo. I wonder if the band decided to make a similar bit to add in to their music, since they've covered Instant Crush by Daft Punk in their live performances before (and are prolly fans of the band), and they can actually pull it off since Julian Casablancas is the original singer of the song. I just thought that was interesting lol, maybe I'm looking too into it, and it's a small part of the song, but it sure sounds similar.
Can't Swim - Friend & Microwave - Trash Stains have almost the same intro. I noticed this when they played back to back on shuffle in high school gym class😂

I suppose the simple thing to do would be to not click on a title you think is clickbait. Or just don't watch any more of my videos. I mean no harm or upset with anything I do. We should all be friends here 🤗
Sarcasm is a pretty convenient excuse for a shitty click bait title.
Putting forth an idea like this, even in sarcasm, has a great potential to damage the band’s brand.
I see the similarity, but it's no blurred lines plagiarism.
Shits blurry af, what do you MEAN
Sacredgeometry he’s talking about the song blurred lines
LOL
This is insane!
The Emarosa one IS THE SAME
damn
I found new bands today, thanks
Haha I was going to comment the same.
Don’t support anything Jonny Craig is currently apart of.
DaveCraves RawFood Not possible. I’m not gonna support a POS human being just because he’s talented.
DaveCraves RawFood Everything he’s done since DGD has sucked. That’s fact.
you have to check out will swans memes too.
What about that part in Chocolate Jackalope when they say "you use to call me on my cellphone"? you could say they are ripping off Drake in the middle of the song but it's a parody, it's done with another intention and that changes the way you think of it
They both came out the same year though, so it'd be hard to find the time to do that though
@@alejandroserrano928 Nah they def said that it was made to poke fun at drake/ autotuned rap in general.
loving the mustache, suits you well haha!
Billy Talent - This Suffering (at around 2:26)
I The Mighty - The Lying Eyes of Miss Erray (1:16)
The vocals are almost identical melodically and lyrically.
"Misery won't get the best of me"/
"Misery, you won't get the best of me"
I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THANK YOU
I always thought I was the only one who noticed this, thank god
DUDE YES. The first time I heard it I instantly recognized it!
I NOTICED TOO
I'm so happy this comment exist! It's happily been bothering me!
Make Me Famous - Blind Date 101
Songs it ripped off from
Pierce The Veil - Million Dollar House
Asking Alexandria- When Everyday’s the Weekend
Asking Alexandria- A Prophecy
ah, just commented this.
oh make me famous took down and dirty breakdown too.. or maybe just bcs its the same vocalist and its his own lyric #cmiiw
So glad you pointed out the similarity between the Of Machines track and I Still Feel Her! That's been bugging me for years
The intro from Three Days Grace's It's All Over and the intro from Sick Puppies' Monsters
"There Goes My Hero" chorus chords sound very similar and are played similarly as "Tears Don't Fall" chorus chords by Bullet for My Valentine.
Disappear (Remember When) by Issues (2014) @ 0:05
Remember When by There For Tomorrow (2008) @ 1:46
Same key, same words, same notes.
So they both use a flanger :/ *phaser
Phaser*
Ben Thies yo my guy, you didn’t have to expose him like that..... completely unnecessary. Some might even say savage.
Jarrod alonge is a legend
Some of those parodies should've been actual bands.
That band rules and they are still releasing parody tracks. Basically like an underground weird al. Shits dope.
Anyone else want a full Emarosa/Of Machines mashup after watching this?
Of Machines didn’t rip off, hahaha. they were DGD fans/Emarosa fans. If I remember correctly, before Of Machines, they were called Their Eyes Look North, in reference to a DGD track from DBM! That Of Machines track is my favorite because it takes a nod at Emarosa. How times has changed, haha
Flutter by Tilian, and Blow Me by PINK. Also came out incredibly close to each other with Tilian writing for ages on the album.
If I remember there's another Material Me track that has this effect, but that's just pop music for you.
Tilian has definitely used a chilli peppers melody once... I think somewhere on acceptance speech
JimmyVanMalin Yep! I heard that upon first listen. It’s on Doom & Gloom. 🙂
What song ?
but the song is... from emarosa, not dgd?.... ?
Silent Planet - Inhabit the Wound song motif with Thrice - For Miles at 00:58
Although im sure this is intentional, both christian band, same themes, what a cool reference!
Reach inside - heal the wound - make us whole. and Open the wounds and share them then soon they start to heal
One thing I noticed is that Tilian has a melody in Doom And Gloom that reminds me of John Fruscinate's vocal part on Can't Stop by RHCP
listen to "caliban - crystal skies" and "architects - dead man talking", "asking alexandria - the death of me" the am i insane part sounds like avenged sevenfold - almost easy "im not insane" and blessthefall five ninety and escape the fate the aftermath (3) with the "im coming home" sing-alongs
i've dig some fall of troy and the first their song i heard i was like: What?
the starting riff of After the Burial - Neo Seoul is absolutely stolen from starting riff of The Fall of Troy - F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.
Not even close......but heres one. Hail the Sun-Ow Splidao 0:19 and The Fall of Troy-Ghostship part 5 2:49.
I can't really A/B it right now but from a quick listen I can see the similarity but the way they flow is completely different and it's a single guitar lick.
@@fergar0206 yea thats all ive ever heard a band take from TFOT.
TFOT and HTS have toured together anyway, HTS’ biggest influences that show through are Circa Survive and The Fall of Troy
anyone notice how chelsea grin, thy art is murder, and few other bands copied BMTH breakdown point where oli says"the doctors wont be able to recognize your face"
Shadow Moses by BMTH and Reprise by Bad Omens are basically the same song lmao
MJ holy shit lol
Do you even have ears you piece of shit
Bad Omens wants to be BMTH so bad
Asking Alexandria's Nobody Don't Dance No More and Aiden's The Last Sunrise have similar riffs.
@@Mikerisms I was going to say, I'm pretty sure there are infinite possibilities as far as melody and note order goes.
@@stayskeptic3923 definitely.
I actually noticed this too on my own but I’m glad to see other people have too
Never heard of OF MACHINES but as soon as it played i immediately thought it was jonny singing and i hears i still feel her....crazy
i thought an interesting similarity was falling in reverse "the departure" and silversun pickups "panic switch"
Miss Murder by AFI & Holiday by Green Day. The main riff to both songs are almost identical just different tuning & tempo & slightly different chord progressions
I'm so glad you know who of machines is.
Dgd's opening riff on Chucky vs giant tortise is literally just a wolf and bear riff but like wolf and bear rips off DGD so it's fair game
People are calling them out for that and not that the bridge from slouch is almost the same as the bridge of Dark Days by PUP
Not implying that one ripped off the other, but the intro of Stolas' Bellwether sounds a lot like ALLB's Sesame Street Is No Place For Me
Artists always take inspirations from others. It's no surprise you're gonna have some similarities especially with the same genres of music.
Omg my heart broke when I saw the title and then I watched it and the world is ok again😅
John Smith That was intentional though, Adam and John did that to mock Jesse
The "solo" in End of Me by A Day to Remember is like exactly the same as You Make Me Sick by Egypt Central
there is an old attack attack song that has a guitar riff that sounds very very similar to a chiodos riff
Let it roll by atl and 40 days by blessthefall both say “like its all we know, its all we know” in the exact same melody
I’ve always found the opening guitar to Thrice’s Blood Clots and Black Holes very similar to Avenged Sevenfold’s Unholy Confessions. Slightly different, but they feel closely related. Both very enjoyable in their own right.
That example you gave was actually very good and really showed what a clear steal is vs. coincidence.
And yes, The Blackout - Hope (Scream It Out Loud) has a very similar riff to Wonderwall by Oasis.
Love love love Thursday!!!
Additionally, when they do like someone else's sound they do a collaboration with them or cite them on the album/coverage of album (I am thinking about how much Chino influenced the song they had him on) and if they wanted to use fall of Troy's sound, I don't think that would have been a hard collaboration to set up:)
Also wouldn't it just be sweet to write a song that incorporated those aspects you listed in you video from a song that changed you or influenced you and would that be stealing or showing love and appreciation for someone?
Paramore- Decode (2:16) and Godsmack- Bulletproof (1:53) solos sound very similar in my opinion
The end of killswitch engages cover of holy Diver and a very popular all that remains song I forgot the title damn
The intro guitar riff from "The Robot With Human Hair Pt. 1" is very similar to an old Emarosa demo "Too Close For Missiles, I'm Switching To Guns".
Also:
"The Kid's Aren't Alright" by The Offspring (~20sec in) and "Reverse This Curse" by Escape The Fate (~6sec in) and "No Future" by Blink 182 (during the na na na part)
Emmure’s “Rusted Over Wet Dreams” took the entire song structure from The Acacia Strain’s “Smoke Ya Later”
It became such a thing that it caused a massive beef between the two bands.
TAS even wrote a song about it called “Skynet”
Billy in 4C Never Saw it Coming by Motionless in White and You Already Know What You Are by A Day to Remember both use an almost identical pre breakdown sample.
Pierce The Veil - Million Dollar Houses and Make Me Famous - Blind Date 101 is one that comes to mind haha
Emarosa armegeddon and we are paramount by broadway the intros are so similar I always mix them up when I play them
Wow! I love both of those albums & because the tone of the songs are different I NEVER noticed the plagiarism. Since the Of Machines song has a lot of echo & production that makes it feel unique I never realized it was the same exact melody as I still feel her part 1. Great great catch man!
The riff of Novelists' Antares got ripped by Earthists in the song Flux
tbh i smiled when you mentioned Of Machines, they were one of my favorite bands in high school and I listened to that album quite a lot. I thought everyone basically forgot about them since they were a one off and not incredibly popular.
I love that album, still jam it every so often, that's what made me think of the Emarosa comparison!
I used to think “Broken vs the way we were born” sounded like a Nero song at the beginning like 2808 or Innocence but it’s just a similar start but not the same
what's interesting as well is Slaves (JC's current band) has a song with the lyrics "Getting Closer to Closure", which on it's own I would've dismissed, but now it seems like quite the coincidence
dude your reaction in real time to that comparison just instantly made me subscribe. btw WHAT DO YOU USE TO TWIRL THE STACHE
Haha, thanks man! I used Havana Blend Stache Wax, found it on Amazon, people said it was good... It is!

Not sure if this was done on purpose but the band “Dads” has a song called “Big Bag of Sandwiches” and it’s shares the same lyrics/vocal melodies with the song “We’re Really Jazzed About the Gig” by Wavelets. Always wondered if it was a knack at each other.
Speaking of similar guitar riffs: 45 seconds into Psycho by Muse (2015) is the intro to Roadhouse Blues by The Doors (1970)!!
Tide has turned - the portal (2013) @2:10
Northlane - Dispossession (2011) @ 1:18
100% the same, never heard anything more similar
Suicide season from BMTH and Avalanche from TGI both have the same intro theme (same chord progressions, slightly different melodies). Even the Vocal FX are strikingly similar lol
Back in the days of Happiness I saw DGD at the squash the beef tour and Kurt was talking with a sound tech about how he's ripped off a lot of old classic music.
The main riff from "massacre"- escape the fate always sounded like a slower "Chelsea smiles" - bring me the horizon
And dont even get me started with asking alexandrias first album and make me famous 😂 theres trillions of songs out there this is bound to happen
Lol
ELO's Telephone Line and Green Day's 21 guns
Digging the handlebar/goatee combo, it suits you
Interlude by the healing sounds the exact same as blessed with a curse by being me the horizon
Relativity was released a whole year before the other though.
I don't think Fall of Troy would care if they did anyway because they are friends with each other
HAHAHHA the of machines song I instantly though Emarosa.
of machines a lot of people don’t know of them but there like my child hood
