  • Geologists around the world are calling it the "new gold rush". We ask why companies are rushing to capitalise on white or natural hydrogen, with our guest Minh Khoi Le. He is the head of hydrogen research at business intelligence company Rystad Energy. According to the firm, 40 companies were searching for this "white gold" across the globe at the end of 2023, including in the US, Canada, France, Albania, South Korea and Colombia. Back in 2020, only 10 companies were involved.

Yeah idk what this hydrogen would be used for. Hydrogen is no good for personal transport, baseload grid power, or even most industrial applications in the long run since most of them will be electrified. Maybe for long distance aviation and maritime transport, cement production, or chemical synthesis?

Not sure how much hydrogen supply can be obtained, but how will it affect oxygen supply in atmosphere? - since burning hydrogen results in fusing oxygen O2 with hydrogen H into water H2O. Meaning, less oxygen supply in atmosphere.

Nobody has been looking, but I wouldn't invest at this point, the start of a hype cycle.

Most of the visuals are not relevant, hydrogen is not economically viable for personal transport. The tests by Toyota for example flop consistently.

There are other things in the world that can use hydrogen than just road transport...

@@flemlion13 There is unlimited thirst for natural gas alternatives in the chemicals and manufacturing industry though. It far exceeds any other use. Road transport can easily be done with batteries or other methods.
