For initial checking for level and before straight blocking the frets, I run a black sharpie down the top of every fret.
Then when you flat block it you can see exactly what's happening as you see the shiny brass appear against the black. It clearly shows any bends, dings, dips, highs, lows, degree of crown etc. on every fret.
And you can easily see when you are finished as to not over do it.
    It works great !

I have been using boiled linseed oil for years on my guitar and mandolins. It must be wiped completely off after about 8 minutes or so, otherwise it can become sticky. I like the little rod holder to round over the fret crowns. I'd bet a guy could almost make one of these in a wood shop and save a chunk of cash and shipping. After leveling, I'd start with a 320 pad and get finer up to 1000 or 1200 to crown. I'll have to see if it's possible to make one these in a practical manner. Steel rods can be had for real cheap and a router bit I already have. Wood? No problem. Thanks for the tip, it might work. Bob
