IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE. Your aircraft. Your costs. Your responsibility. Your coordination. Your decision on how this aircraft gets flying. The last time I checked I don't believe you need permission on where you acquire parts or for what amount of money. The very fact you care enough to purchase and make this aircraft flyable is a testament to your love of aviation past and present. Kudos to your dad for his amazing wealth of knowledge and generosity. Along with your brother and uncle for their mechanical aptitude. I have never seen a group of people that love what they do more. Congrats thus far on all your hard work and effort in keeping a piece of our valuable history alive.

Very well said. That DC3 could easily have ended up being cut up or stripped for spares. I have a couple of projects that would have ended up as scrap. Both are 1946 built light aircraft.

Joes RCAF C-47 is a literal time warp, this unique machine deserves to be kept in this original historic state, just think of the navigators who learned their trade on this rare machine, the patina is precious and a wise thing that Joe had the insulation removed as this was a corrosion bag inside that fuselage.
You can see that Stella is really enjoying the vintage aircraft experience at Red Deer, clambering over that wing and looking around that airplane,Ronnie has done a great job in getting those engine parts in place with all that new plumbing ready to install on DTD,all in all it has been one successful weekend and a first tick off the box towards getting the machine airworthy.
Mikey your dad loves you and wants this project to be successful too,his kindness in allowing you to use parts shows the unique nature of this whole project, this is one very exciting journey for many people learning so much along the way about the way aircraft preservation works, for those who do not still understand about parts swopping on vintage aircraft this is the norm especially as you just cannot get bits off the shelf like a modern aircraft, you just keep these old aircraft airworthy by robbing Peter to pay Paul until one day you just run out of bits !
I was thinking of the weight of all that military interior on C-FROD and why it was removed for commercial operations.
Have a safe return journey Mikey.

No offense to the Ice Pilots NWT crew but it is really cool to see and hear your Dad (and you and others) "raw and uncut" on Plane Savers. From the cars to the DC-3/C-47 knowledge and preserving ROD in its original configuration, wow. Getting this on tape is the best thing you can do, his knowledge is too valuable to be lost! Thank you Joe for the great tour of ROD, thank you Uncle Ronny for the insight into these old engines and airframes! These old planes each have a soul, you can feel it when when you lay your hand on them. They are living breathing beings that are in a deep slumber at the moment. If only they could speak words, the stories the could tell would keep me on the edge of my seat for days.
It will be nice to hear DTD when she gets her voice back. Wish I could be there to hear her in person but life has a way of getting in the way.
Thank you Mikey, Joe and the rest of the team that's keeping these birds going and bringing some back from abandonment and death. I know the planes appreciate it too.

I want to thank Joe for the tour of the C-47 and mentioning "Lost Over Burma." I had never heard of that film so searched for National Film Board of Canada Lost Over Burma. The film is 46:41 in length and worth viewing every second. Gave me a whole new perspective of how those young lads put their future on the line every time they stepped aboard their plane, off on another perilous mission. A new perspective and a great deal more respect; so that our generation can enjoy the lifestyle they fought for and made possible for us.

I have been gathering parts for my Cessna 140 and Ercoupe projects but as neither will ever fly again I am only using non airworthy bits. Even those are costly. Noticed the 1974 Winnipeg Centennial decal on the rear door. My opinion is ROD gets flying is to leave her in the CAF scheme, just redo the interior lining.

I love that those d day birds are not leaving a war buddy behind. Buffalo you Mikey and everyone gettingdtd back home.
I was in the signals branch of the CF. I know Morse code. This plane is a gem. She's the greatest DC 3 that will ever exist.

I recognize a lot of the radar and communications equipment on 927. I worked on those Daks back when I was stationed in Winnipeg in the late '60s and early '70s.

ROD is a time capsule that I hope will be preserved for many centuries to come.
Though it would be nice to see the old girl fly, it may just be best to leave her be, especially as everything Stock Military.
    A priceless piece of history

Glad to have found you. Always watched "Ice Pilots" because as an RCAF Navigator I did some arctic work in Lans, Daks, C119s and Arctic Trials on the Yukon when the Airforce had them, and could relate to the problems of operating in the north.

You need to convert one of your hangers into a museum to put this aircraft and others and maybe some of the old cars, another great episode 😀
