It's expanded more as the story goes along, the old man is basically Tony Stark and made a self-aware ai using the tech of a very old, very advanced city he discovered. Of course, said ai got a bit goofy and started a revolution.
That could be a reasonable explanation. Another thing to point out is that there is absolutely no evidence that Meca One or any of his fellow robots have been mistreated during their time serving the humans. His only stated reason for rebelling is because he believed robots to be superior to humans.
This has to be the hardest thing lego has put out, also they should have done like a third person shooter like video game for exo-force, the genre just fits the setting so well

There were 39 issues of the web comic, and the last one ended with “How will the jungle mission end?” as if it were intended to continue, but it didn’t. People liked the sets, and the website got its fair share of visitors. So why did it suddenly come to a halt?
So essentially each of the four leads are just human versions of the Ninja Turtles. Takeshi = Leonardo Hikaru = Raphael Ryo = Donatello Ha-ya-to = Michelangelo
That's because the ninja turtles are classic examples of the four main personality archetypes: sanguine, choleric, melancholic and phlegmatic. Not surprising that those archetypes show up in other groups of four.
This is beautiful in all it's 2006 glory. (sigh) I find it interesting that even though this is a LEGO animation, no LEGO bricks can be seen anywhere. (Except the end, of course.)

If I remember correctly they aired this on nickelodeon broken up into 5 pieces. Despite the very short run time they still managed to make each piece re-use a huge amount of footage from the other ones.
