1400 ct Opal BRICK

  • In this video, I take 1400 carats of fine Coober Pedy opal with distinct black opal and white opal layers and make some amazing cabochons with it. The material is very unusual, in that the black opal very much resembles that seen from Lightning Ridge. Opal is a gemstone made of silica whose molecues are arranged in small groups with a round shape. The alignment of the silica "balls" is what determines if the opal wil have color (gem opal - gemstone) or have no color (common opal or "potch").

I left it there without reporting it so you can screenshot it and put a community post about it. Honestly man I know you do this for fun but scammers are taking advantage of your good work . to me, personally, the offcuts are the best pieces. I'm much more interested in how the stone grew, and what its different layers are than to just have one flawless opal face. I like it when there's inclusions and sand and potch around, so seeing you took good care of the offcuts warmed my heart a little. They might not look the prettiest, but they are definitely the most interesting pieces in my opinion.

Opal is my favourite stone. The way it can encapsulate sea creatures and fossils, the way it can penetrate big egg shaped boulders of iron stone, or just fill long slices or fissures in the country rock. Where it will lie in darkness only to be birthed with every imaginable colour as soon as the light touches it. Usually when some miner comes and hard works it out of the ground. Great video.
