Hi! Zoologist and duck lover here. Twitchy wings isn't actually a nervous thing, they do it cuz they're hot. They quiver their wings to release warm trapped air and get fresh cool air up against the skin by the wing membrane.

We have a couple flocks of whistlers that visit us in Southeastern Florida. My wife and I agree with a couple adjectives we've seen used for them, including vociferous and boisterous. But they are also pugnacious, with each group sort of like a gang who have sworn an oath to protect one another. Very entertaining birds! I promise you, watching these birds will make you laugh.

Hi Jo! Thanks for sharing! We are duck parents to a Black-bellied Whistling duck since July. Is a rescue duck, no family so we took it on. It's 4 months old and hangs out with us all day and with our dogs. Comes when called and loves to land on our heads. It's imprinted on us and clearly we have as well, lol. Still trying to figure out if it's a boy or a girl though, keep calling it a she but who knows. HA! Love learning about these guys!

I can't imagine I added much to your store of knowledge, Krista. Sounds like you know a hundred times more about these ducks than I do--and get a thousand times more enjoyment from the one you know. When she(?) lands on your head, is it heavy? Seems like it would be.

This recently happened to me , too. It was alone on the street, about to be ran over and no farms around me would take it in. I did my research and am currently raising it. Do you have any tips. Because I wanted to know if I should atleast get another duckling to socialize it. But from your experience, it sounds fine as it is. Idk, i’ll take anything.

We can work in the yard with them around and we both keep our distance. They just watch us and wag their tails. We also have 4 woodland cranes that come by and they will eat with them. I could watch them for hours.

    • @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME

The fact that you liken the fashion details to a runway show tells me my fashion metaphor came through loud and clear, Cathy. There's another wildlife videographer, Clive Bramham, who starts each movie with an establishing shot of the whole scene. It seems like an excellent idea--which somehow I never remember to do. (But the flight shots at the end sort of accomplish the same thing.)

I love this! Your narration is sweet and charming and very interesting! We have a duck box for the first time and as of today, 18 eggs. We are excited! It has been such an interesting and fun journey watching the parents care for each other and swoop in to lay their egg...Mother in th box and Dad nearby making sure all is okay (though each time he enters a bit after she does, as though to encourage her for the process. When she is finished...she sticks her head out and signals him and they join one another (in low flight at first) to whatever pond-adventure they go to for the night. BTW, they never fly home before carefully perusing the area below from a roof or treetop before entering their Tiny House! Delightful creatures. Thank you for posting this!

You have an interesting situation, Susan. It takes it takes a lot of patience to get any bird to tolerate our presence. For the past couple weeks my husband and I have been spending several hours each day sitting on a bench next to the creek behind our house. We throw dried mealworms on the ground about 5 feet away. So far only Gray Catbirds and Robins will eat there while we're there. As for learning from my other videos, let me help you out with some duck movies. This movie--more than 15 minutes long--contains four short movies about water birds: ruclips.net/video/OTrHVw8QA4Q/видео.html. You could also check out my films about the mandarin duck, wood duck, Northern shoveler, Blue-Winged Teal, Coots, and a movie called "mallard melee". That list contains most of what I've done on ducks, but I've got 250 or so videos up. No need to confine yourself to the ducks. 😉 Making these movies is a learning experience for me every time, and I wish you fun in turn learning from them.

I just put a very short video on Instagram. If you are interested you might be able to tell me what kind of ducks they are. The ones in the video are young ducks who just a few weeks ago were tiny ducklings. My name on Instagram is florida_grannie

I saw 2 last week in southern ontario canada on top of yhe trees in my woods. Never saw ducks on trees like that so I never knew what they were. Is it rare for them to be here in Canada?

I just saw some of these guys in my neighborhood in south Texas. I thought I had never seen them before despite living here for years.
So I found this video when looking what their call sounds like. I laughed out loud because I hear that call *often*. Especially if a hawk or falcon is about. I assumed it was some smaller songbird’s warning call.
These guys have been in my neighborhood all along and I’ve been hearing them, but never noticed them.

Absolutely! I’ve been wondering what bird was “tweeting” in the middle of the night sometimes (I have insomnia and am up late a lot) and it’s definitely these guys. There’s a marsh behind my street and I bet I’m hearing them in the marsh eating at night and warning each other of foxes and coyotes.

@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME The most interesting/frustrating is usually the mockingbird that sometimes decides that 2am is the perfect time to practice his repertoire outside my bedroom window.
I don’t know if the streetlight confuses him or what, but it simultaneously makes me laugh and want to throw a shoe at him.

From what I understand, once they pick a spot, they're there for the season. I went back to the same location many days over a two or three week period to film them.
