Actually, the 45mm is exactly 35mm on a full frame camera. The 55mm is almost 44mm so that's the reason you find it tighter. But the main surprise for me is the bokeh and the overall rendition. The 55 looks absolutely amazing!
I preferred the 45 pretty much every time when you put both the shots up. You used the word "context" and it's wider focal length, coupled with the fact that it doesn't liquify your background as much, that right there is the "context". The 45 is more of a story telling lens than the 55. Even if you stop the 55 down, it looked like you had a harder time naturally framing the shots. This video confirmed why the GF45 is such a great lens.
Really, really lovely results and shooting. Thanks for sharing and for your easy style! I have the 45 and 110 and this is the most exciting lens. So glad that Fuji has created it.
@@jbivphotography step back a bit for 35mm pov. But I stil reckon I would ralther than this 55mm F1.7 over 45mm F2,8. I only have 2 native GF lenses 45-110 and 110 F2, this will be the third.
As others have mentioned the GF55mm is closer to a 44mm. That + the aperture makes what I think this is the magical medium format look. All my favorite medium format film looks come from around this range: Pentax 645 + 75mm (roughly a 46mm), Bronica SQ-Ai + 80mm (roughly 44mm) and the Fuji GW690 + 90mm (roughly a 39mm). This is the lens that we've been looking for to give that special look.
You sold the GF 110 F2, are you kidding me. All GF Lenses start with the 110 F2, there is no equal for portraits. I love your content brother. Be sure to get some 512GB cards for you GFX, it is a must.
Thank you for the comparison! I think I'll stick to the 45mm and crop to 55 when I need to. I also have the 80mm so having more space between them is the most important factor to me. I couldn't belive that there is such a great difference in angle of view between the 55 and 45!
I totally agree with the more space between the 80. With the 55 and 80 the focal lengths are a little close. It's mainly what I'm going to be using but 45 and 80 both give very different looks.
love the video but did notice the color difference between to the two lens @3:57 and yea i know pre production but i did notice that as well between all 3 of my sony primes
Very helpful comparison! The 55mm looks way better. Now I’m wondering how the 55mm compares with the 63mm 🤔 since that’s what I’d sell to get the 55mm.
I did try the 55mm, and I'm quite confused for now. I love my 45mm-80mm combo, but the autofocus speed of the 55mm is incredible for tracking and for video too. When I receive my 100-2, I want to test it more with my lenses and decide how badly I need the 55mm. Btw, 45 is my fav lens for city portraits for commercials (when you need to show more background).
I wonder if you just take a step forward with 45mm, will you end up with the similar depth of field, or vice versa, taking a step back with the 55mm. That will be a great comparison.
Yeah. I didn't do the greatest job of matching the lenses. I didn't realize the focal length was going to be that different. I might revisit this in the future.
I have the 45mm, 45-100mm and 80mm. For wedding I think the 45mm f2.8 can be slow for a wedding and it's one stop brighter than the 45-100mm f4, which is way faster in general. The 80mm is very slow, but I learned how to use it over time and I think it pays off. The 55mm is very fast in comparison with these, from what I'm seeing in the videos, but I can't be sure until I try it. But because you are able to crop more on the 100mp images, you can actually do an entire wedding with the 55mm and use the 80mm just for the portraits!
I'm a FF shooter with Canon and considering adding the GFX 100 ii and selling off some of my gear to do so. I use the RF50 1.2 and the 85 1.2 a lot for weddings in that focal length. Wouldn't the 55 1.7 and the 110 2.0 work better the 80 1.7 is in between the two lenses?
Hi John, I already have the 45mm and the 110mm, which I adore! But I also want to get the 55mm, just for the days when I feel like using only one lens! :-) Would you dare to do a complete wedding shoot with just the 55mm?
Lovely look! Is it wide enough to replace the 45 in those tighter spaces? Does 1,7 still give context for the event? All subjective questions of course.
That would be the question. When you're outdoors it's easy to deal with because you can just step back some. But in an indoor situation I'm not sure how it would do. I'm actually waiting for Fujifilm to make some fast wide glass for the GFX.
@@jbivphotography If the 'speed' is just for low-light, and let's face it 2,8 should be the thinnest dof for events in close quarters; then perhaps a cheeky fill-flash is all that's needed rather than blurred ears and bokeh balls. Love your work and much respect!
I have the 45 and just pre-ordered the 55, thinking I'd sell the 45. After watching this, there's enough of a difference in the lenses I think I'll keep the 45.
Yeah they're super different and honestly I wasn't expecting such a difference in the focal lengths. I'm almost wondering if on a wedding I should rock with like a 55 and a 30 something. I wish Fujifilm had a faster 30mm.
It looks like 55mm F1.7 is the one to go for rather than 45mm f2.8. I use a bunch of adapted lenses, only have 2 native GF lenses 45-100mm F4, 110mm F2. I usually buy these lenses when Fuji ran their cash back promotions. With this I can get 20% discount from the retailer and then cash back. In Australia I think 55mm f1.7 will retail for about AUD$3500, I probably get it for round AUD$2300.
I'm a FF Canon shooter. Have the R5 and the R3. But I'm so impressed on what I have seen with the Fuji GFX 100 ii Thinking of moving over to MF but do it gradually. I have 8 Canon lenses 7 are the RF If I bought just 2 lenses to start with. Would the 55 1.7 and the 110 2.0 be the best two to get?? To cover my self I have a good selection of wides. Have the 100 135 and 70-200 to cover distance still when needed?? I'd use the FUJI much as possible but can't buy everything all at once haha Any in put from others appreciated as well :)
Hi, I can just speak of my recent experience as I purchased a GFX100 first generation just a month ago. I sold all my Sony gears (Sony A7RV and 7 lenses) and must admit that even with a very slower AF the image quality is just in another level. No way to return back, for me ! I have just the 45-100 and the 80 for the Fuji. I'm a fixed focal lenses man but the 45-100 is astounding. You will probably also be surprised with the depth of field, so f4 is not bad at all (the f1.7 is really difficult to use, same as a f1.2 lens in full format). This would be my advice: go with the 45-100 for some time and adjust after ! (and of course, if you're not in sports or wildlife shooting: sell all the Canon gear because this can pay most of your migration)
this video makes me want a 45mmf1.7 .... every photo taken with the 45mm is better ... it gives context and a readable background... while the 55mm is blurrying the background away

I also tested the 55 1.7 at my local store in Berlin - and compared to the 80 mm, which is in full frame about 62 mm - not so far away from 45 mm: but it produces a much more portrait-like rendering. And in most of you practical cases there was a bit more space behind you... the main argument for the 55 mm could be the faster AF, but if your are not doing sports for animals, for normal people the accuracy of focusing is more important. AND: the second issue - why not a fast 45 mm 1.7 - that would have been a real groundbreaking approach to journalistic photography... but now we habe 45 2.8, 50 3.5, 55 1.7, 63 2.8 , and 80 1.7 ... so there still is no reason for me to get into there 55 mm experience;-((.
Hi, with all my respect : try a medium format for a week or two. If you can't see the difference it's just not for you. I sold all my Sony tools (Alpha 7RV + 7 marvelous lenses) to migrate to a Fuji GFX100 first generation : absolute no regret, just another level !
Because it's a medium format camera so the sensor is larger than full frame. Per the math everyone compares focal lengths to full frame. So the 45mm on a medium format sensor has the effective field of view of a 35mm on a full frame sensor.
