One cannot underestimate the impact the way the band handled Peter’s troubles at this time had on his decision to leave. They still talk about it to this day.
To be fair when Anthony Phillips had stage fright, was ill for a year while touring, and was basically having a nervous breakdown, he as well as the others were not exactly sympathetic. Sympathy and the music industry certainly back then did not exactly go well together. Fortunately Anthony got back into music and has turned out about ten times more music than Genesis.
@@mikearchibald744I see what you mean, but to be even more fair, when Ant left they were all 20 or less, they were just kids. When Peter left they were about five years older. And having the wife and your first born about to die doesn’t exactly compare to having stage fright either 🤷🏻♀️
@@rpraelsporcupine3112 Well, what we know is that Peter and ALL these guys tended to hold things close to the chest. Anthony was good friends with Mike but says that although he said he saw him a lot "obviously he wouldn't tell me about all the fights". Phil says he didn't even KNOW about the problems, Steve was in the middle of divorcing a drug addict. Mike and Tony we figure know the most because neither of them have really given 'excuses'. But HOW serious Pete was telling them we don't know. Five years with a wife and child is what caused Pete to 'grow up', and none of the others had that, so expecting them to 'grow up' without the impetus is a little unfair. And since the guy was pissing off to go to america to work with william friedkin then it seems natural to think that maybe things aren't as bad as they seem. Even Anthony says Peter never really did talk much, so I"m thinking the "listen guys, my child is dying so I really need time off" conversation never really came up. But he certainly has said the lack of sympathy was a big part, but again, in the past he was as unsympathetic as the rest of them. Glandular fever in the late teens is a pretty goddam serious thing. Being sick for a YEAR is a pretty serious thing. Even Richard says "I could see it coming a mile away" - meaning his leaving. While in the group interview you see MIke LITERALLY made that "elbowing out of the way" motion when talking about how Anthony left. And when asked Anthony in an interview said "when you leave Genesis you leave Genesis", when asked why he didn't come back to replace Steve after he left. Thats obviously not meant to EXCUSE them, but as I said, Rock and Roll is a business and a cut throat one at that. Particularly when young, in the seventies remember that these guys were deep in debt and had no real hits, and Tony points out he thought he had good music, then Pete covers them all with a story that nobody can understand, meaning, they certainly aren't going to get any radio play.
@@mikearchibald744I didn’t say he was expecting the others to grow up too, just that he found no sympathy at all. And that not knowing if your wife and child are gonna survive is something that you don’t need to be very grown up to understand is upsetting. While having stage fright, even more so back then, even more so being only 20, was something they probably didn’t understand, any of them. Probably not even Ant understood what was happening to him. And Mike said in his book how unsympathetic they had been to Peter, and Tony got a bit angry at Mike for the things he wrote, so Phil maybe didn’t know what was going on with Peter, but Tony and Mike did, for sure. By saying he wanted to work with Friedkin are you trying to imply that Anna and Jill’s life wasn’t really in jeopardy? Because none of them have ever put that in question, and when Friedkin wanted contacted Peter probably Anna and Jill were already at home and out of danger, so he wanted to spend some days off working with him, maybe taking the family with him, what’s wrong with that? He only asked for a few days off.

@@rpraelsporcupine3112Me too!! I can’t get enough of his voice. It gives me chills! I saw him in October here in LA and his voice is still a force of nature!! He opened with ‘Washing of the Water,’ and when he effortlessly went into his famous falsetto for the words ‘til the sun has left the sky’ the audience erupted in cheers and applause. Listen to the live version of ‘Supper’s Ready’ from the Archive set. I love when he sings ‘something tells me I better activate my prayer capsule!’ It’s so deep, emotional and raw!
@@bobmerrifield3371Absolutely!!! Peter’s falsetto in Washing of the Water is so fragile and beautiful!!! And he is absolutely brilliant in Supper’s Ready ❤️❤️❤️ I wish I could have seen him live, it must be a wonderful experience ❤️
Still the most shocking leaving after Lennon's... Both of them (Peter and Genesis) would have done very well again but nothing compares that amazing era (70-75) together. Anyway nothing last forever...😔
Yeah, Rush 'borrowed' a lot of ideas/concepts from the more seminal bands like Genesis and Yes (particularly the latter). Nothing 'eerie' about it - just 'blatant'.
difference, (and therefore non empathy towards Peter) was that Mike & Tony hadn't had children yet. Obviously, now both family men, they show remorse at how they were in '74. All's Well that ends well 😍
Early Genesis is unlistenable. Middle Genesis had some cool songs I love "Misunderstanding" "That's All" "Follow me Follow you" even "No reply at all" but Psuedio makes me hate them. .... lol 😂
@rpraelsporcupine3112 I didn't know you were gonna be so thoughtful and articulate. Hey, I just wanted to troll early Genesis, you made it weird. Haha 😄

Indeed, and Mike talks about it with remorse.
Breaks my heart Tony and Mike treated him like that. No wonder he walked away.
Yeah, it breaks my heart too. Poor Peter. He did what he had to do by leaving.

They had splendid careers their separate ways too, Genesis and Peter, so nothing was lost, really 😊
Does anyone else hear something eerily similar to the beginning of Xanadu by Rush playing in the background?
