How to Let Kids Design Their Own Playgrounds - and Give Them Back the Streets

  • Taking children seriously as designers and design thinkers is a no-brainer idea. They are the most brilliant minds at our disposal. The NGO called Parks and Playgrounds for Children by Children in Taipei were tired of the crappy plastic playgrounds so they challenged the City to improve the standards. Then they decided to get the experts to design a park - the Hwa-Shan Grassland Playground. The experts were the children, of course. Because of the success of the movement, all parks in Taiwan now have to consult with the children who will use them.
This is design, design thinking, citizen engagement, sustainable architecture, people power... all rolled into one.
The next step was to take back the streets, which also involved tackling a rigid, bureaucratical structure. But the Angry Mothers - as they are affectionately called - won that battle as well.

Yeah, People should be able to directly influence every part of their life in which they are involved with and this includes children, too, and this just shows how good it works out

I want to believe urban designers across the world don't watch this simply because they don't know it exists.

I would love to get more resources on how to run playground design workshops with kids and parents. Is there a way of getting touch with Christine in Taiwan?

We are all very grateful to these mothers for their unpaid work, that children in Taiwan no longer only have plastic modularization playground to play , but can choose from a wide variety of playground to play, that's really not easy, but they did it.
