I’ve been waiting on the results of this experiment with bated breath. Thank you, your chemist friend and his fiancé for making it happen despite the challenges you’ve had to overcome.
I love this idea! As someone who is a cosmetic chemist and is trained on how to correctly assess hair, I just want to offer advice. Make sure that the shampoo you are using to wash the hair is a very basic formula. We often use a solution of SLES to cleanse the hair that doesn’t have any silicones or any other additional hair conditioning ingredients to ensure that the changes you are seeing is only from the product and not anything else. I hope this helps or if you’re doing this already, you’re doing great! Keep up with the informative videos! X
Thank you SO much for going above and beyond to answer our questions- It's actually incredible how far you've gone for this. You seriously need for recognition! 👏 and the non-biased videos are just chefs kiss One last question I have though: Since K18's pro mist is a high pH to raise the cuticle for the mask, would it be logical to use a high pH soap like dr. Bronners (pH of 9)? Would it do damage long term like how using high pH hair products alone does? Last note - I watched some of your videos and I wasn't sure because I have curly hair, but you just earned yourself a subscriber! 😊 Can't wait to see the results! LASTLY, THANK YOU CHEMIST FRIEND AND FIANCÉ!
Thank you Chemist friend & fiancé. We spend deflated, hard earned $, on over priced products, not really knowing… Even a basic comparison would be informative, and direct us the most efficacious product/ ingredient for our type. It’s astounding there’s been no professional, third party lab, analysis of this type. Though initial & on spare time, it’s a groundbreaking study. I look forward to the report. And thank you to this content creator for all her efforts!
It wouldn't be so bad if we could return the products that don't work, or exchange them. My sister takes everything that doesn't work for me. We have different hair types so sometimes she loves my hand-me-downs.
Abby. Wow. I have SO much reapect for you. I have Never, nada, not once written a comment on a video. But everything about this video from your personal excitement, your positive-realistic attitude, your foresite to think of and adress the feelings of how others may think about someone wanting to fix their unhealthy hair but not wanting to chop it off, is nothing short of amazing. You do all of this without judgement of others, but facts, enjoyable humor, but most importantly without judgement and with kindness. Now, like you say, this is just one persons opinion, but i hope it brings you joy, lets you know your work is invaluable, and encoyrages you to keep going. You are far from a young woman simply sharing their whatever-it-may-be routine. You've honestly changed my stereo typical houghts about you tube influencers (which may have been a bit judgemental).
I finally bit the bullet and purchased the Dyson AirStraight. I wish I hadn't waited so long. Trying to use a blow dryer and round brush, just resulted in puffy frizz. I thought the Revlon One-Step round brush would be the answer, but I feel that it really damaged my hair from the tension and by how hot the central core of the brush got. So, the AirStraight has been the perfect answer. (Perfect with the exception of the price 😢) I don't feel any tugging on my hair and I'm actually able to dry my hair using the middle heat setting of 230°. I have also seen improvement using K18. I am hoping that by using both, I can eventually get my hair back to a healthy state. Thank you for all your work and thank you to the individuals helping with your experiment. I look forward to future updates.
Huge, huge thanks to you, Abbey, and to Chemist Friend and his girlfriend, for all the time and work you all put into this experiment. I absolutely loved hearing every detail, and I can't wait to see what happens as the experiment continues. Thank you so much!

I’m excited to see the results! Also, I always come to your channel to get reviews of products that I’m considering trying. I love how to not only talk about results and costs of products, but also the consumer experience side as well. I hate buying a product that ends up smelling gross or feels awful on your skin or hair. I so appreciate how in depth you go into your videos!
i have tried olaplex, redken, and k18. my best results come from using the k18 after shampoo, waiting 4 minutes, then conditioning or masking and rinsing out. it just works so much better for me than using the k18 alone!
Thanks chemist bud! And thanks chemist bud’s fiancée (I think you said the chemist was ‘he’ and fiancée was she… definitely don’t mean to assume that). We are so grateful for your help in this! I’m actually in hair school/cosmetology school right now, myself. (Hello career round 2 at age 35 😂) And information like this is great to be able to reference for my education and especially for my clients in the future! Love learning the real reasons and functionality/technology behind why certain products work. And to be able to use that knowledge to help others with their hair journey is awesome! And as always, thank you Abbey ❤ (aka “my RUclips beauty guru, abbey) lol that’s what I call you to my friends and family anytime I reference something you’ve said or taught me. I’ve gotten my whole fam and all my friends to follow/subscribe to you now, too. Oh and by the way… from us “oldies” out here… thank you for still prioritizing your RUclips followers all these years. Because, I love Instagram and TikTok and I’m on them daily… but for things like this… and all the wealth of knowledge you have and share… I much prefer the longer video format. And I’m joking about the being old part… lol mostly. But. I do find that people my age and up still enjoy the longer video formatting more than my younger friends and family in their early twenties or even teen years. I think it’s just whatever you’ve grown up with. I love both for different reasons. I’m ADHD so I love a short video but when I’m passionate about something I want allll the info. Okay wow that was long as shit. So many words, case. 😂 have a great Sunday, abbey and friends!
This is awesome, thanks for going through all this. Just wondering, as bond repair deals with the cortex mainly, would the ‘older’ style protein treatments, like Aphogee and Redken CAT help with the non-existing cuticle layer by creating a ‘prosthetic’ (albeit temporary) cuticle? Also: thank you Chemist friend and fiancée! You’re both super appreciated
I've been wondering about this as well! I've always used Aphogee's monthly/bimonthly, so I don't plan to stop even after starting Epres. But I'd love to know the effect proteins have on a non-existing cuticle
Hmmm... let me see if I can find any existing research on this. Conditioning treatments really just create a film over the hair which acts as a protective layer!
I love this video! From my experience with hair extensions, I have learned from the vendors themselves that the cuticle is specifically stripped from the hair (non-Remy) so that it does not get tangly. That way you can use hair from the floor, pick it up, strip the cuticle and it will behave for a few months without looking like a rat's nest!
Abbey!! Thank you so much for doing this and reaching out and connecting with chemist friend/thank you chemist friend’s fiancé!! I freaking love science and data and I’m so happy you are doing this!!
Hey Abbey! Could you please also test on one of the hair extensions your routine? Since I know you use multiple bond repair products within your hair routine. I’d love to know if combining them makes for even better results. 🤔
This was so interesting!! I’m an MD student who does research for fun and my husband is a PhD chemist too (ironic right?) we are absolutely fascinated by this and loved hearing the process. I think it would be really interesting to test an extension set using the routine that you use with alternating K18 and living proof to see if there are any noticeable differences compared to using just one treatment
My partner is an analytical chemist he suggested that an advanced high powered MRI would be able to measure the uptake of products from cuticle to core and the effect on the hair.
@@AbbeyYungMy partner also advised SEM-EDX (X-ray back scattering). Your chemist friend will likely know if either of the 2 techniques I mentioned in my 2 comments will be of assistance. Please note I am typing with my partner spelling out the science bits 😂. All the best and good luck!
hi! preclinical drug discovery researcher here- while the new samples you shipped to SEM friend has cuticles but just in case your hair samples aren't from one source (which might've been the case with your last experiment, the control strands look different visually)... you can mix the whole batch up (that means all the hair you've gotten from this purchase), really mix everything up and create your own strands. also with the products did you follow the product instructions (for example, living proof would let you use conditioner first) or are u keeping it all the same? also, let me know if you need help with other aspects of study design!
Very interesting and useful experiment. The fact the cuticles were completely stripped off was new info for me and something that explains a lot. My hair has been bleached so many times that it is probably either that or close to that over large parts of my hair. A lot actually broke off about 10 cm from my scalp (some of it as close as about 3-4 cm) and I was not a happy camper... Took it back to dark brown and now I don't touch it with anything but repair. K18, Olaplex (in the beginning it was so fragile I could not use K18 at all, but Olaplex worked wonders), deep conditioning shampoo and treatments + protein treatments. It's a whole thing, but this video confirmed for me why the bond treatments doesn't work as well as before. My hair is just too damaged. But I have to say it does help a whole lot, just not like before the disaster that broke the blonde experiment. ;) Can't wait to see your next update! Great video and so thankful you take the time to do things like this, so the rest of us can learn from it.
What an informative video! I'm learning! I have a question. Does darker hair dye fill in your cuticle? If so, does that mean dark hair dye might actually be good for the health of your cuticle? My hair always feels healthier when it's dyed dark.
You guys are all amazing! Thank you Abbey, microscope gal, chemist friend and fiancé!! I absolutely love this video and can’t wait to see more results!
Is it necessary to use a bond repair if you don't bleach your hair nor use heat on it? Can it benefit natural in some way? Love your content, have been binging it all, however this question came to mind :). Thank you Abbey!
Hi Abbey, cool stuff! I am just wondering why you are imaging the cuticle and not imaging cross sections of the hair? Can you not see damage via SEM that way? Why would you predict that bond builders modify the cuticle if that's not the place they target? Thanks!
What a fantastic experiment! Thank you for taking the time to do this and all those involved! It’s proven that the ends of the hair are irreparable from chemical damage. Regular trims are essential and caring for the hair from the root is essential. If you’re using hair lightening treatments it’s proven that olaplex helps prevent hair damage from this but if not cared for correctly after you will have huge damage!
I did a big cop 2 months ago 6 inches because of the damage. It was hard. I also have hashimoto disease, and when my thyroid is off, my hair shows it and my waistline. I am trying your hair was products, I am using not your mothers bonding line, it's cheaper, but I did order apres. Can't wait to play and see what happens ❤.
I have a multiple level question. I kinda feel stupid for asking, because I may be asking the wrong question. I read somewhere protein can help or cause more damage. What products have protein? How do we know how much you need? Are bonding treatments protein? Who shouldn’t use a bonding treatment? Or can most benefit? I really appreciate your time and response.
Love the scientific approach. Great organizational talent to find someone who can actually help with the electron microcospy. Love the story and the process, more of that!
This is publishable research (once you do the second test), at least as a short communication in a scientific journal. Definitely talk to your chemist friend about this! It would be beneficial to him to get publications. From a fellow PhD student :)

My hair is unprocessed but breaks off so bad - and no it is not a thyroid issue, I have gotten it tested! I wish there were products that were geared toward unprocessed hair. I've tried Olaplex and ABC and they both make my hair break even worse so I'm scared to even try K18, which I know is different than bond repair but again this is all geared toward bleached, processed hair. I'm too scared to dye my hair because of how fragile it is, I can’t afford for even more to break off!

Question- will colour treated hair (colour deposit, e.g. I colour my hair dark brown over blonde) respond in a similar way to treatments like this applied to colour-stripped hair? I have no idea if colour molecules in the shaft would affect the result of a bond repair treatment.

You are amazing!!! I love your deep dive into all things hair. Can you add the L'Oreal bon repair into the mix? One drug store for comparison? If not, no biggie. Can't wait for the next video🙂💛
Oh just look at the results for the reform it's the same thing they just repackaged it pretty much
Redken
I’ve been waiting on the results of this experiment with bated breath. Thank you, your chemist friend and his fiancé for making it happen despite the challenges you’ve had to overcome.
Thank you Abbey for doing all this work to figure this out!! Can’t wait for the results!
You are an amazing human Abbey. Thank you so much for all that you do, from one current severely bleach damaged girl to a former. You rock! ❤️
We appreciate you Abbey! Thank you for doing the work behind the scenes to bring us the best hair advice
Yay, chemist friend and fiance! Thanks Abbey, appreciate all you do to educate us on hair health!
so interesting to hear the behind the scenes on these projects! i love it. THANK YOU chemist friend, chemist friend's fiance, and Abbey!
Thank you SO much for going above and beyond to answer our questions- It's actually incredible how far you've gone for this. You seriously need for recognition! 👏 and the non-biased videos are just chefs kiss
One last question I have though: Since K18's pro mist is a high pH to raise the cuticle for the mask, would it be logical to use a high pH soap like dr.
We spend deflated, hard earned $, on over priced products, not really knowing…
Even a basic comparison would be informative, and direct us the most efficacious product/ ingredient for our type.
This is so fascinating! Can’t wait for results. Thanks Abbey for doing this, and thanks to your friend.
Do you have updates on the new extensions yet? I’m so fascinated and curious.
Huge, huge thanks to you, Abbey, and to Chemist Friend and his girlfriend, for all the time and work you all put into this experiment. I absolutely loved hearing every detail, and I can't wait to see what happens as the experiment continues. Thank you so much!
I’m so excited, what a fun experiment!! Can’t wait to see the results!
This is so cool. I can't wait to see the results!
Abbey, can’t thank you enough for not only making this for us, but we get it FREE! I don’t buy a new product until I see you have provided input first 💕
Abby. As a hairstylist for 41 years and a self proclaimed product whore ;-) I love what you’re doing bringing so much valid information to the masses. I love your videos. I enjoy all your information as it really resonates with my sensibility when it comes to hair care for my clients. Thank you so much. I will continue to watch a Videos. Daniel.🎉
Abbey I have been waiting for this! Thank you!
Good to know what kind of hair do you have?
Thank you for not give up. And thank you to chemist friend! That is so cool!!
I believe CAT would still make a significant difference.
I LOVE this combination of hair and real science, omg 😍😍
I can’t wait to see the next video. Hopefully it’s sooner than later!
Im sorry that the 1st round didn't go well, but im super excited that your doing again with the cuticle as im 1000000% wanting to see it.
This is soooo interesting, cannot wait for the results. Thank you chemist friend and fiancee .. and Abbey (and Elsie) of course!!! xx
Thank you, Abbey and Chemist Friend! I can't wait to see the results!
My partner is an analytical chemist he suggested that an advanced high powered MRI would be able to measure the uptake of products from cuticle to core and the effect on the hair.
Wow this is incredible! Thank you for the suggestion
Omggg ive been waiting for this oneee thank you abbey!!
Thank you for all your hardwork Abbey! And, thank you chemist friend! It truely is a long and frustrating journey to improve damaged hair.
This is why I I follow you, the commitment 😭
Is it necessary to use a bond repair if you don't bleach your hair nor use heat on it? Can it benefit natural in some way? Love your content, have been binging it all, however this question came to mind :). Thank you Abbey!
Good question. Do you get highlights or dye it at all? I wonder if it can help w sun damage.
Sally Beauty has a bond repair line too. Can you include that one too?
Great video idea!
If you’re using hair lightening treatments it’s proven that olaplex helps prevent hair damage from this but if not cared for correctly after you will have huge damage!
where is the next video?
Yes, I want to know as well.
Your dedication to healthy and beautiful hair is amazing!!! Thank you for such an extraordinary hair experiment.
I have been dying for this update thank you so much for doing this cant wait for part 3
This is so awesome! I can’t wait to see the results
Love the scientific approach. Great organizational talent to find someone who can actually help with the electron microcospy. Love the story and the process, more of that!
Abbey, please update your color formulas. Your hair is gorgeous!
This is publishable research (once you do the second test), at least as a short communication in a scientific journal. Definitely talk to your chemist friend about this! It would be beneficial to him to get publications.
From a fellow PhD student :)
Are the results in yet? Im not sure how long this will take.
this video deserves more likes. people are idiotic. you went through so much effort...,not to mention how much products cost...thx Abbey
Thank you so much for this! To you and chemist friend 😊. Can’t wait to see the next video!🎉
Can’t wait to see the results! Are you drying the hair between each treatment? Or one after all 6 treatments?
Thank you chemist friend and chemist girlfriend 😘
Thankyou so much for taking this extra step. You are definitely bringing forth valuable content. I have fallen in love with your channel and have been going through all your videos one-by-one. The process is really enlightening and therapeutic. Thanks again! Love
Can’t wait to watch the follow up video!!!
i’m digging that how Abbey is introducing science into her content. Please never stop. This is so much better Bob the science guy. I hope that this trend takes off. inevitably, there will be sponsor-influenced ‘science’ results from other creators.
Would love to see a drugstore product or two included in the next round of testing!!
So excited to see how this goes
Ahhh I’m so excited for this!!!
💖💖💖. I appreciate all your hard work!! You are my favorite! Your honesty and integrity are so rare and special. I hope you know how grateful I am for your content and personality. Many blessings!! 💖💖💖
Awww thank you so much ♥
You are amazing ❤I can’t wait to see the results … and off course thank you to the “chemist friend”
I can't wait to see those results!! Thank you ♥️
This is amazing! Can’t wait to see the results!
Abbey, with this video, you're taking content creating to a next level. I truly love how you steer your content creating career. Please keep up the good work, I'm off to watch part 2. And thank you to chemist guy and his fiancée, well done.
I hope the brands won’t silence this info… I’m looking forward for the second part
This is exciting! Thanks for taking us along on the journey :)
I’d be curious if you could also include your hair and maybe chemist friend to see repaired hair and likely pretty healthy hair (unless chemist friend has more hair damage) :)
It would be interesting to see a vehicle control, which isn't really possible, but maybe just using a generic leave in conditioner? Also comparing what it might look like microscopically vs what it looks like visually / feels. like on the surface. This is so cool!
Omg Abbey you are so amazing for doing this!! 😍 Thank you so much. I know I speak for all of us when I say how much we appreciate it!! And yes, we appreciate your chemist friend as well! 😍🤩🥳❤️
My first thought was that you use so many products on your hair!! How do you know which one actually works?? Plus, address your diet and vitamins. Hereditary, etc.
What? She did extensions?
Try thinking like thinking
Sarah...in general she uses ALOT of good products on her hair. So one has to wonder what really works????? I was making a point.
@@2INTUATIVE By introducing the products to the routine one by one so you'll get to see the impact of one product at a time in addition to the other products already in use.
Thank you for being so thorough and dedicated
Question- will colour treated hair (colour deposit, e.g. I colour my hair dark brown over blonde) respond in a similar way to treatments like this applied to colour-stripped hair? I have no idea if colour molecules in the shaft would affect the result of a bond repair treatment.
I’m in love with this concept and I cannot wait to hear what the results are! How fun and different!
Abbey! You have outdone yourself👏🏼 this is just 1 reason why you are the best beauty influencer💕🤗 I don’t even have damaged hair but I ate up every second!
