  • Yusra Mardini--athlete, Syrian refugee, and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador--talked to me about swimming in the Olympics and her rigorous training schedule, her life in Syria, meeting refugees from other countries, her favourite English swimmer, and more! I really enjoyed getting to know Yusra both in this conversation and in her memoir, Butterfly. You can follow Yusra on instagram: / mardiniysra and find a video about her trip to Sicily here: • This Olympic athlete s... . Thank you to the RUclips Space London for providing the studio and to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency for asking if I'd like to take part in the conversation.

I loved this so much! I hope to work in UNHCR one day and it's so powerful to hear the stories of refugees so as to further understand the complexity of their experiences.
Also, good interviewing skills, Rosianna! Another great video!

I couldn’t agree more. The ongoing effort to speak over stories of those who happen to be refugees or homogenise or warp those stories or disregard them entirely is so damaging to all of us. Up to us all to amplify the stories least heard, I think.

Rosianna Halse Rojas It’s always problematic to describe loose groups with overly-specific traits, eg. All refugees are Muslim... etc
It’s so important that we get past that style of generalising and actually start listening to who people are and what they need us to do to help.

Lovely interview, thanks for that! I hope this story makes the rounds and everybody reads it. As a German, I am ashamed and disgusted how right now the sea rescue efforts by NGOs are actually being discouraged and in some cases made impossible by many countries in the EU, and Germany has its part in that. I hope hearing of her story makes people imagine refugees as humans individuals with stories who deserve compassion and the protection of their human rights.

Yes, it’s absolutely devastating to see again and again. And every once in a while there is a moment of near-universal shock at a loss deemed particularly bad but then collectively people become numb to it again, or worse, twist it all another way. And while we go back and forth, so many lives are ruined and lost. It makes me so angry, but it also reminds me how much work there is to do.

It has happened so many times now - only if we zoom out, we can really apprechiate how circular this dynamic really is. For anyone interested in a theoretical underpinning, I strongly recommend Didier Fassin's paper 'Humanitarianism as a Politic of Life' (2007), for a short read as well as a very insightful book by Miriam Ticktin 'Casualties of Care: Immigration and the Politics of Humanitarianism in France' (2011).

Thanks for the book recommendations! It's so easy to become complacent about these issues, especially for people like myself(17, living in Ireland and not being confronted with the discussion of refugees all too often). Trying to do more!!!

I loved this video! I totally want to look into Yusra's book now, she seems like such a compassionate and intelligent person -- I hesitate to say woman b/c I'm her age and I still feel like a little kid most of the time, which is why it's so impressive to me that there are people like her out there in the world sharing their stories and helping to amplify those of others!

Rosianna Halse Rojas I read it! It was great. It's been so long since I've read something as thoughtful as this. It was so captivating and made me feel smypathy but also understand her point of view. It was educational and emotional and I feel privileged to have been able to access her thoughts and her story.
I love Yusra's honesty and her will to live. As a German it also deepened my understanding of the situation so many refugees here are in and made me quite frustrated with the way they are often times treated in return making me question the way I treat them and think of them.
I would love to be able to express my thoughts more adequately than this but this is all I can manage.
Thanks again so much for the recommendation!

Thanks so much for this interview Rosianna! It brings up the crucial point of just how different each person and each story is. Being willing to work with people as individuals and not just as a generalized whole is what’s going to bring more knowledge and empathy to people who need it the most. I’m so grateful Yusra has been willing to share her story and to share her life to show her as a person and to encourage more understanding for those of us who haven’t had her experience. Brilliant.

    Great to see you back!
Yusra is an amazing person I can't imagine having gone through any of the things she has in her life, let alone all of it together. Even having the motivation to do something on such a high level like being an Olympic swimmer is far beyond a chronic procrastinator like me. It was really fascinating to hear her story in her own words and the unique perspective she has on things.
I've seen enough really bad "true life" stories that I think picking a book to tell your story is a vastly better idea than going to Hollywood. There is so much more control in a book and no pressure to force the story into the same three act story with forced story beats that we have seen so many times before.
Thank you for sharing this video and asking such excellent questions Rosianna!
